There is nobody here to point the finger at. You understand the business. They made it more [offensive coordinator] Jason Garrett and [quarterback] Tony Romo friendly. Again, no more excuses."

Nice words, let's see the deeds.

Ranch Report says we've been interested in Penn State WR Derrick Williams

Penn State wide receiver Derrick Williams was one of a handful of draft prospects interviewed extensively by the Dallas Cowboys at the NFL Combine, TheRanchReport.com learned this weekend.

We need GD88 to weigh-in since he just did a scouting report on the WR prospects in the draft.

Here's a mock draft that came out after I put up my mock draft post yesterday.

51. Dallas: Louis Delmas, FS, Western Michigan

Has the range and athleticism to be a big help in the Cowboys' secondary.

Sounds nice but I don't know if we'll even have a chance at Delmas at #51. It could happen, but Dallas may have to jump up a little bit if they really want to get him.

Safety prospects

I highly doubt Louis Delmas will be around at pick #51. He’s being labeled as the best safety prospect in the draft. His scouting report just reminds me too much of Roy Williams. A hard hitter who is good at stopping the run, but is prone to bite on the play action. It does sound like he has better coverage skills than Roy Williams did. His reported score of 12 on the wonderlic doesn’t bode too well either.

I’m intrigued by the safety out of Troy, Sherrod Martin. He’s got excellent coverage skills. He came in as a corner but Troy already had Leodis McKelvin and Elbert Mack starting so they moved him to safety because he was just too talented to not be on the field. Troy seems to be producing good pro prospects the last few years.

Reports say Martin gets sucked into play action too.

I’m not sold on Sherrod Martin at Safety. Martin – Not physical, weak tackler, injury prone and questionable instincts seem to break nearly every rule I would have for a Safety.

by Luke. on Mar 31, 2009 3:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I like Martin but I'm on the Darcel McBath bandwagon now.

I want a ballhawk in our secondary. We’ve only got one safety so far on the team that has proven that he can cover and that’s Hamlin. Maybe Sensebaugh will do it but I have no idea if he’s the answer or not.

The more tape I see on Derrick Williams, the more I like him.

Problem is, there are a lot of middle-tier wide receivers this year. If there is another second round pillaging of the wideout crop, Williams might get caught up in it. And that is too early for us to be thinking receiver.

He's going to go too high

I looked at a bunch of mock drafts. They project him going anwhere as early as pick 40 and as late as pick 66. He was described as a “poor man’s Steve Smith,” and could help solve our kick and punt return woes. But do we really want to use a 2nd or 3rd round pick on him assuming he’s even around? We just can’t do it. We (allegedly) jettisoned T.O. because we have a young WR corps ready to step-up. We have more pressing needs. If he somehow falls to the top of the 4th round, then maybe. At least it’s a conversation worth having.

by Boundforbeach on Mar 31, 2009 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions

great pick

Delmas is by far and away the most complete safety in the draft who has excellent coverage and ball hawking skills as well as the ability to come up and support the run, he really brings a load for a kid slightly over 200 lbs.

I also agree he probably won’t be there at #51 but you never know.

+1 You really never do know.

I can think of a lot of guys who had no business sliding into the second round who somehow ended up there. We just might get lucky.

yes.. his name was mike jenkins, supposedly the best corner in the draft and the most nfl ready to take the next step to the nfl… he managed to drop all the way to our second pick in the first last year.. had we not taken him then who knows how far he could have dropped

by missingthe90s on Mar 31, 2009 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Jenkins

wouldn’t have went that far down the board.

The furthest he would’ve gotten would be Kansas City, but more then likely San Diego would’ve taken him over Cason.

Think it's a safe assumption......

to say that Terry is in love with Delmas? What is he going to do if we don’t get Delmas? LOL

by texstar on Mar 31, 2009 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not in love with him

I just think he is the best safety in the draft which is the position of our biggest need, a true ball, hawking, difference maker than can also support the run.

I just want our defense to get to elite status and we can’t do that without better safety play.

Explosive/ Powerful athletes in the draft

This is going to be a long winded post, so please forgive me. I have always liked articles by Pat Kirwan at NFL.com. In 2005, he wrote about the search for athletes that are both explosive and powerful. He said that if you add an athlete’s number of bench press reps to his vertical jump and his broad jump, he looked for someone’s combined score that added up to 70.
Kirwan said “there is no reason to look for athletes who do not have a high draft grade because, for the most part, they have already indicated they aren’t good enough football players on the field. After filtering them out, I went after those prospects with a good playing grade and a score over 70. I then filter out the weight-room guys who have 40 reps on the bench and an 18 inch vertical and a 7 foot broad jump. There’s a place for a strong guy in a weight room, but he’s not the guy most coaches are looking for. Along the same line of thinking, a basketball-type player with a 42 inch vertical and an 11 foot broad jump but just 9 reps on the bench also falls out – he can’t deliver a blow when he gets there. The magic number of 70 indicates the explosive/ powerful athletes. These guys can get there and bring it.”

For example, Demarcus Ware had 27 reps on the bench, a vertical leap of 38.5 inches and a broad jump of 10-foot-2. These numbers add up to 75. Justin Tuck of the NY Giants had a combined score of 72.

Recently, Marcus Freeman (LB from Ohio St.) had 30 reps, a 37 inch leap and a broad jump of 10 for a combined score of 77. That is the type of player that I think Dallas should look for when they get on the clock in each round. Have any of you noticed any other special athletes out there?

I assume this only applies

to defensive players, like linebackers and linemen.

how about that for power?!?!?!

by missingthe90s on Mar 31, 2009 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

This applies to offense and defense

The Cowboys have invited Lawrence Sidbury (OLB from Richmond) to visit them before the draft. Sidbury benched 28 reps, leap 35", broad jump 10’ = 73. Offensive tackle Jamon Meredith (31 reps, 28", 8.9’ = 68). Compare the following safeties:

Sherrod Martin Louis Delmas Patrick Chung
Reps 12 12 25
Leap 36" 37" 34"
B Jump 10.3 10.6 9.11
TOTAL 58 59.5 69

I am not qualified to say which is the best football player, but Chung is the better athlete.

by redbeans on Mar 31, 2009 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I remember when Kirwan came out with that.

He also didn’t look straight at a players 40 time. He liked to look at players who had a short shuttle time that was .5 seconds below his 40 time. For example, if a OG ran a 5.2 forty yard dash but his short shuttle time was 4.6 then that showed Kirwan something. I don’t remember what it was but he came out with some pretty good stuff.

There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.

by kameleon_o on Apr 1, 2009 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Kirwan's other article.

He said that speed and quickness relate to each other. “A man who runs a 4.4 40 and a 4.4 short shuttle is really a guy with straight-line speed who may not play very fast because of a lack of quickness. He is often referred to as a guy with ‘track speed’. Conversely, an athlete who runs an average time of 4.7 in the 40 but can hit the short shuttle in 3.9 – significantly better than the 0.5 differential – can overcome his average speed with great quickness and change of direction. Anyone can read numbers and tell you who the fastest or the strongest person is, but it’s the ability to see the athletic potential and the playing speed along with the tools to compensate in one area or another is an important clue about a prospect.”

by redbeans on Apr 1, 2009 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

That's why

all the talk of the 40 times is just silly. Unless players are separated by a wide margin in the 40 there really is not that big of a difference.

When did I become a Cowboy fan? When my mom told me I was.

by GunsUp on Apr 1, 2009 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Just for grins

If one runner runs 40 yards in 4.4 seconds, and the next ran it in 4.5, then 4.6…
The distances covered are now
1. 40 yards (4.4 sec)
2. 39.1 yards (4.5)
3. 38.264 yards (4.6)
4. 37.44 yards (4.7)
5. 32.59 (5.5 sec)
I’m not sure how the shuttle works but it looks like you lose almost a yard per 10th of a second in the 40. Argue over the times all you want, but if the 40 times are any indication, it is for possible separation ability. I still wish they would measure the 40 with pads on.

When did I become a Cowboy fan? When my mom told me I was.

by GunsUp on Apr 1, 2009 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Me too.

Why not run these guys in the 40 and to their drills with pads on?? Is it an injury concern or something??

Do you subscribe to The Huddle Report draft site? Just curious because they actually incorporate both the S&Q (speed and quickness) and EXP (power and explosion) numbers on their value board.

PATRICK BLEEPING CRAYTON

I disagree that those are nice words Grizz. I mean obviously Crayton didnt get the memo about being a team and not throwing the team under the bus in the media. I mean seriously, what has Crayton done that he thinks he is obligated to open his big mouth and start problems. Does anyone else notice the whole Garrett friendly and Romo Friendly comment? He is throwing Garrett under the bus just like TO was doing. I really hope we trade him and Ellis during the draft along with a majority of the low end picks.

I think you are right.

The no excuses comment was directed at Romo and Garrett. Given these comments, I think its going to take some time to heal the fracture caused by TO’s departure.

Dave....I Agree.....

and for those that think that the locker-room is going to be magically fixed because T.O. is no longer there, better think again. This lockerroom is very fragile right now and Romo/Garrett both have to bring the other side together to work as one unit.

by texstar on Mar 31, 2009 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Tony,

Yeah, my first thought was he’s whining again too. Their was no need for him to single out Romo and Garrett like that. It’s just divisive behavior.

But what more could you expect from Crayton, a solid #3 WR who thinks and talks like he’s a superstar #1. If he doesn’t get on the same page with Romo and Garrett real soon he’ll be out the door next year.

I actually took Crayton's quote to mean

that it’s all on the players now, the organization has done everything this off-season to make the the team Romo and Garrett-friendly, so if the job doesn’t get done it’s on the whole group for failing. That’s the way I took it anyway. That he knows Romo and Garrett can do the job, but can the rest of them do their roles, without any excuses like locker room turmoil, etc.. But truly, I didn’t think that deeply about it. ;-)

Raf and Grizz

Do you think Dallas will actually will take all 11 picks they have?

If not, what do you think they may do as far as trading some picks to move up, and which rounds do you see that happen?

Also, do you think we will go for need or best players available?

Thanks.
