Dallas Cowboys Release Terrell Owens

Tonight Jerry Jones swallowed a $9.5 million cap hit (in dead money), and washed it down with a tall glass of pride. ESPN is reporting that the Dallas Cowboys have released Terrell Owens. Details are scarce at the moment but we will update this story as more is revealed.

Pack your bags

In Romo we might Trust!

by rocj55 on Mar 4, 2009 11:08 PM CST reply actions

???

What?

We still have 5 WRs on the roster making over $1MM a piece. And we didn’t save ANY salary by cutting TO. So where is the Anquan money coming from? And why do we need him?

Stephen is definitely pulls the strings now

I kind of noticed something was funny when Jerry wanted to trade up to get James Hardy and Stephen told pops to take a walk because he wanted to get Martellus Bennett

by quincyyyyy on Mar 4, 2009 11:09 PM CST reply actions

Told you guys tendering Hurd meant something

Obviously pros and cons to the move, which have been debated here ad nauseum. But we’ll now get to see if Tony can make his own way as a franchise QB, which I’m really looking forward to.

Is anyone else amazed by this? The gag order worked to perfection.

I really can’t believe they cut him. I feel like Jerry has grown a lot this offseason in holding people accountable. Hopefully this goes down to the coaches too.

Wrote this in the fanpost, here goes

While this may hurt us this year, It’s Good in the long run.
TO was overpaid. He was old. He was in decline. He was trying to make this offense into something it wasn’t. He was perpetually dissatisfied.
Was he still a gamebreaker? Sure. Was his cancerous influence overstated? Probably. But dropping him sets the tone for this team: Nobody is safe. No matter your contractual situation, no matter your status with the club, no matter how many players on the squad vouch for you… You’d better represent with production and pride or your ass is hitting the pavement.
And honestly, I’m not sure we regress without him. Roy’s our clear-cut #1, the role he’s always wanted and needed in order to succeed, and the team’s going to become more run-based anyways. We don’t have 17 balls a game to send Terrell’s way anymore.

Kanye, you want to be the voice of this generation? Get in line! It goes me, Obamagirl, the Freecreditreport.com guys, then It's a tie between you-and Crocs.

What a stupid, stupid move...

You’d think TO killed a man or something…

by cstorm15 on Mar 4, 2009 11:14 PM CST reply actions

Just look on ESPn

They show EVERY clip of him yelling and screaming, like it happened every game, this makes me sick.

by joey7289 on Mar 4, 2009 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

I'd agree he was villainized unfairly by ESPN...

…and I don’t dislike the guy, but I’m okay with the move. Now Romo will get to be the unquestioned leader of the team, and we’ll see if he and Garrett have what it takes to be a championship combo. I actually think it might help Tony’s development, because I’d like to see him evolve past the point where he locks onto one receiver. Either way, shouldn’t be any excuses remaining.

Jerry really bit the bullet here. We don’t have anyone with TO’s talent on the team. I don’t believe RW2 can do it. This was all about Tony and handing him this locker room back and saying it’s your team. Let’s see what you do with it. Nobody to blame it on now!!!

Also, look at the message Jerry just sent the rest of the team. "If he’ll cut that guy, take that kind of hit, that crazy MF Jerry will cut ANYONE!!!

This means STFU RW2, Crayton, and any other whiner that starts doing their thing in the media. No soup for you!!!!!

Holly Montecito....

Maybe, just maybe, Romo was the problem, not Terrell. Ever since that divorced actress, who allegedly cheated on her husband with Bam from Jackass fame, got her hooks into the best quarterback never to win a playoff game, things have gone south, with Owens taking the blame. Hopefully this will send a message to the Bill Buckner of the NFL that no one is safe.

Witten

is still the best tight end in the league. Felix has the potential to be a great player. RW was the #1 on the lions…..which means he certianly should be able to be a number one for us. Crayton has proven capable as a #2/3. And Austin has loads of potential. Bennet looks like he can play.

What great changes have the giants and eagles made to improve their offense?

by foyesboys on Mar 4, 2009 11:38 PM CST up reply actions

People are going to zone

On Witten now, they don’t consider Williams a threat, again if we run the ball a ton I’m fine, but I have a feel we’re going to see a ton of zone this year, so our tight ends won’t be half as affective. Take away Austin deep, and Witten and Bennett short.

Witten will still do really well and TO wasn’t that good last year anyways. I don’t see too much of a dropoff on offense but it should hurt somewhat. At least it might help Romo stop forcing passes, because he always tried to force them to TO.

by Aaron Novinger on Mar 4, 2009 11:48 PM CST up reply actions

Being an OU fan

I’ve seen Iglesias a lot, and have been impressed with his quickness. His hands looked terrific up until the national championship, where he literally handed DBs the ball, after Bradford delivered a perfect pass…twice. I’d still be thrilled to see the guy wearing a star on his helmet. We could use some quickness, and Austin is more of a straight line speed guy, so it may make sense.

Does anybody who watched the Combine know his 40 time? I’d be interested to see just how fast he is. Quick and fast aren’t always mutually exclusive.

The cowboys have plenty of fire power to be a succeful TEAM How many TOs do the steelers have? didnt they win the superbowl, and if I had my choice of our offense(without TO) vs. pitts offense, I still take ours!

Witten

Won’t be half as affective, everyone is relying so much in Roy Williams, who has yet to show he can be a reliable number one, if we’re run first, i’m fine with the move, but we’re not run first.

I think Austin will be fine

should he remain healthy. He’s no TO, but he looked pretty sharp with his limited playing time last year. He at least deserves a shot.

I’m not defending the move. I’m just saying, it might not be the end of the world around these parts. Maybe they have faith in the running game to open things up for the less stellar passing game now? Surely this isn’t some spur of the moment decision. It doesn’t necessarily have to come down to Austin or Roy having to come up to TO’s level immediately.

Will finally get to see what the offense will be like without T.O. He has been our most productive WR since
Irvin and he was actually more productive than Irvin. I’m not saying I would take him over Irvin, but when
you have too many unproven WRs…Patrick “hands of stone” Creyton, Miles “I can’t run full speed or I might pull
a hammy” Austin, Sam “I think I can” Hurd, the QB trying to be a WR, and I still am not sold on whether RW2 is a #1 or #2 WR. I hope everyone is ready for the down side if this blows up in our face.
Don’t throw away your popcorn, because this whole upcoming season is going to be a show…maybe we should

by icStars on Mar 4, 2009 11:50 PM CST up reply actions

I wish TO nothing but the best...

However, this move was inevitable, so what’s the problem that it’s this season. I think we all need to face two facts about TO. First is that he is not as divisive in the locker room as the media makes him out to be. But second, the negative attention that the media gives him and the fact that he still does react poorly in certain situations makes him too much of a combustible player to keep on a team that wants to win. I mean, for example, look at Randy Moss. When he went to the Pats, he had just as poor a reputation as TO. However, he’s been nothing but a team guy in NE and hasn’t ever said one thing or acted in any manner that gave the media more fuel to keep up their bias. TO has not done the same thing and if you want to win as a team, you need the entire team to be focussed on winning. I hate to say it (because TO is a great talent that was a great addition to our offense) but that was not going to happen for us with TO in the fold.

It’s time to move on. And for those that say “wait until we can’t do X on offense” or “wait until player X messes up and can’t do Y” just remember that every failing of our team without TO was because our offense was very much dependent on him as a player. My point is, we don’t know how these players will play when TO is not in the picture at all and their role changes. I happen to remember Crayton being a pretty good player before TO came on board. Witten too. Bennett’s also a real talent. To say that everything is going to fall apart with this guy gone is the flip side of the same coin that the media plays when they say that TO is just an awful player and teammate. It’s hyperbole, plain and simple. I understand that people will be upset about this, but c’mon guys, we’re all fans here and (besides Tex) want the best for this team. I think we’ll be different, but still very good. We still have playmakers…

I’m not sure whether to look at this as good news or bad.

On the one hand, your locker room chemistry just got a whole lot better. A dramatic midseason implosion no longer seems all that likely. But on the other hand, it just got a whole lot easier to game plan for our two games against Dallas.

oh GEEs

Now if your argument is what happens when Roy gets hurt then you have a point but come on

by TONYINCC on Mar 4, 2009 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

My point is

He’s a play making receiver, and most Super Bowl teams have one.

by joey7289 on Mar 4, 2009 11:57 PM CST up reply actions

Give Roy a little credit man

Ok look at it this way Our running attack, realizing our talents, is far superior to pits last year

by TONYINCC on Mar 4, 2009 11:58 PM CST up reply actions

I'll agree with that

I just don’t trust RW, if we run the ball, i’ll be more then happy.

by joey7289 on Mar 4, 2009 11:59 PM CST up reply actions

pitt is a terrible comp

they have a much much much better defense than the cowboys will ever have in the next 10 years. better coordinators, coaches, personnel. everything.

we had a chance to be the giants but we just made it really hard to do that by giving away TO.

RW – just not the same as a Plax or TO

Well agree that the Steeler's have better D

But when LeBeau goes so does the Steelers D and at his age I don’t think he is lasting 10 more years.

True.

when T.O. took that HUGE hit at the end to help the 9ers win.

Hey, check this out...

On wikipedia — which really isn’t a legit source — here’s what it says in the opening paragraph regarding TO:

Terrell Eldorado Owens (pronounced /ˈtɛɹl̩/) (born December 7, 1973) is an American football free agent wide receiver who is popularly known by his initials, T.O., Owens has established himself as one of the NFL’s most productive and outspoken players.1 He played for the San Francisco 49ers, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Dallas Cowboys. Owens played college football and basketball at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. On March 5th, 2009, Owens was released by the Dallas Cowboys. Owens plans on returning to where he started his career, the San Francisco 49ers.

That was crazy.

I was looking at it after you posted, and it didn’t say anything about FA or released. Then it updated itself but doesn’t say anything about returning to SF.

That was nuts.

Jerry played it smart.

He cast doubt on wether the Cowboys would cut him…he even white lied about it. He took heat in the media for not cutting him when almost everyone in the business who is not a personal friend of TO said he should and then he finally cut him after the NYG and Washington had poored a ton of money into FA.

Not too bad for a stupid owner who only plays GM on TV

by Trey, on Mar 5, 2009 1:11 AM CST up reply actions

hate to say I told you so..again

but I knew Jerry hadn’t made up his mind on this issue. This is best news of the off season, I’m really excited about this upcoming season now.

No more distractions, no more locker room factions, Romo doesn’t feel like he has to appease T.O., I couldn’t be happier.

Way to go Jerry! Great job. This is the change the team needed.

In Romo we Trust

if you guys think this is over you are crazy..

Our brilliant owner just got pushed into a decsion by the media and will regret it more than the galloway trade. Going into a new stadium with RWII as our #1 is a nightmare that i will have for months now. Welcome back to mediocrity on offense.. I want one person to give me a good reason why we will be fine this year… JUST ONE REASON!!

And that he might have a plan in place since he is opening Jerry-world this upcoming season.
