Oh yeah, the Cowboys cut Terrell Owens

Well, around midnight last night I had a post about ready to go. It was a nice little update post about Keith Davis visiting the Chiefs, Kevin Burnett leaving San Diego and going to Houston, and the fact that the National Football Post proclaimed us an early winner in free agency.

I was also going to mention that the Lions signed Phillip Buchanon, the Giants signed C.C. Brown and Jabari Greer went to the Saints, thus limiting the available defensive backs still available in free agency for the Cowboys to pursue.

But then the Cowboys went and cut some guy named Terrell Owens. I'll have a piece up about it later today, but from the looks of things, we needed an overflow thread to discuss the move. So have at it.

Mike and Mike was saying

Mike and Mike was saying Pats will take a stab because BB can just say look we can win a superbowl without you so do you want to go along for the ride for this price take it or leave it. Oh and if you cause a scene ill cut your a##. Haha its possible

Now the Cowboys have ZERO 0000000 excuses not to win a playoff game. Romo has ZERO excuses not that i heard him make any but still, his numbers have to go up. JG better make this the best offense we have ever seen now that his hands arent tied right?

Ugh. Not something i wanted to wake up to. i HAD things to do not anymore haha

Cap Room

Can someone do a post on how this effects us Cap wise? I know the game of football, but I don’t know the business of it. Not really sure how cap stuff works, and can’t see how cutting a guy can cost us money.

Thanks in Advance.

I'll say it.

Good riddance. If only TO were as good on the field as he is in his own mind. I’m not a TO hater, but he’s gone. No sense crying over spilled TO.
I’ve never been a huge fan. I always thought TO was what I call an “arm catcher”. He never went up to get the ball like an elite receiver should. I see him jump and slam the ball over the goalpost when he scores. Heck, I even see him dunk the ball in a basketball game. But when was the last time I saw him go over the top of a corner to get the ball. Rarely, if ever, did it happen.

I keep looking for quotes from ANYONE on the team...

Damn gag order haha. Talk about a double edged sword…Anyways, I was a big supporter of T.O. As long as he had the star on the helmet, I was gonna cheer like hell for him. Welp, now that star is gone and I remain loyal to my logo. My biggest thing is the with Jerry bringing people to his house to discuss T.O. If he took a straw poll and found that more people wanted him gone than not, that I’m completely okay with this move. Hopefully we’ll run the rock more and get away from JG’s plan to get a 90 yard TD bomb on the first play of every drive…

Can someone explain the timing

If the cap hit remains the same and we didn’t owe him a bonus until June 1, why not cut him May 31? Was there no potential in the draft to trade him to a team that didn’t appear to be able to fill a WR need?

by cow_fanatic on Mar 5, 2009 7:38 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Because a decision like this needs to be made early in the offseason, so the team could move

on and plan for next year. Today’s Cowboys Lunch Break with Darren Woodson is going to be awesome.

and the plan remains the same for the offseason. I guess the cohesiveness of the team during OTAs and such is a good point though

My two cents on TO

Here were my thoughts back in early January. Now that it is two months later and TO has been cut, I haven’t changed my position. If you read this before and aren’t interested in re-reading, just skip down to the next comment.

I recall a time in the early 1990’s when Brett Favre to Sterling Sharpe dominated the passing offense in Green Bay. Everyone else in the passing game was an afterthought. Favre was roundly criticized for focusing way too much on Sterling Sharpe. (Sound vaguely familiar?) Then Sterling Sharpe had to suddenly retire due to a neck or spinal cord problem. Everyone thought the Packers passing game was finished. Lo and behold, it flourished like never before as heretofore mostly unknown guys like Robert Brooks, Mark Chmura and Antonio Freeman made the most of their opportunity. Favre was forced to spread the ball around because he lost his security blanket…. and he became a better quarterback because of it. Maybe Romo will improve without TO? Maybe Witten and Bennett can be our version of Mark Chmura and Keith Jackson? Maybe Miles Austin can be our Robert Brooks? Maybe Felix Jones in the slot will be a Reggie-Bush-like weapon? My point is that there is plenty of talent on this team and we shouldn’t be looking at one guy to simply replace TO’s stats.

Nobody can be sure if cutting TO this off-season is the right move. However, I think we do know a few things:

• What we have in place right now definitely is not working, so some major change needs to be made to the offense.

• There must be a major change in the chemistry on this team this off-season and cutting TO would unquestionably do just that. Would it change it for the better? That’s debatable, but you don’t lose a strong personality like TO without upsetting the proverbial apple cart.

• TO is definitely on the downside of his career. While the drop-off may have not been very big last season, it will accelerate soon, likely very soon. It’s better to cut a guy a year too early, especially when he is a notorious head case.

• One of the true strengths of this team is the running game. The focus of the offense should move somewhat in that direction. That should also put Romo in a better position to not take as many risks.

I guess I’m leaning in the direction of cutting TO. He is a HOF wide receiver so I don’t take that position lightly, but his days of playing at a Pro Bowl level are over. Let youth be served. Give Romo the opportunity to become the leader of this team. I truly believe that the Cowboys best chance of making the Super Bowl lies with the improvement and maturity of Tony Romo. TO’s presence is hindering that, and his performance no longer justifies it.

by Cowboy Louie on Mar 5, 2009 7:44 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well said

TO lost my support when he did the controversial interview with Deion right before the Pittsburgh game. That proved to me that he put himself above the team. You don’t go bitch about your touches in the media right before a huge game down the stretch. Not to mention that he had 213 yds receiving just two weeks before.

We need to transform this offense into a power running team, using our 3 talented backs, two talented TEs and massive o-line. That takes pressure off Romo and should cut down his turnovers. Roy W doesn’t need to replace TO, just provide a solid possession receiver with a red zone presence. Austin will hopefully replace some of the big plays that TO provided. Crayton comes in as the savvy 3rd receiver to work the middle.

This team needed to be shook up. Bye Tank, Pac and TO and all the bs. Thong and his complaining and finger pointing are gone as well. Today is the first step in rebuilding the Cowboys.

by cowboysuberfan on Mar 5, 2009 11:07 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Here's the Cap Impact - Starting SS is Roy 'Thing' Williams

I’ve said all along there is no way JJ is going to incur $15MM in dead money. Thong is not going to get cut.

Am so ambivalent on this – there’s Pros and Cons to both keeping and cutting TO. Now we have another hole to fill with limited cap room, limited high draft picks and so many other holes to plug. Looks like the window on this Cowboy team being a SB contender is being pushed back in a youth movement.

'It is not enough for me to win. My enemies must lose' - David Merrick

by tdships on Mar 5, 2009 7:52 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

window?

I guess I just don’t see the Cowboys team as of January 2009 as having a Window of Opportunity. In fact, I see it as just the opposite: based on the results over the past few seasons, this squad has proven that it does not have what it takes to be a serious Super Bowl contender. Results don’t lie. So I am all in favor of changing things up.

I also don’t think cutting TO creates another hole. Austin, RW and Crayton will become the three wr’s, and his production will be made up from a variety of sources. Lots of guys want to replace TO with what they consider another super-stud wr that isn’t currently on the Cowboys roster. It is very unlikely that Jerry will make that move.

by Cowboy Louie on Mar 5, 2009 8:26 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Crayton sucks...

Let me say it again… Crayton sucks and brings NOTHING to the field. He won’t do better than 25 grabs next year.

0 = The number of Super Bowls the Eagles have won.

by gee-roj on Mar 5, 2009 8:55 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

I used to have your opinion regarding Crayton….well, probably not quite as negative as you are. Then he proved me wrong in 2007. He started 13 games…..caught 50 balls for 700 yards and 7 touchdowns. That is far from nothing. If he catches 25 or fewer balls in 2009 that means he will have been either been beaten out by a better guy (a good thing) or injured (a bad thing).

Look, he isn’t going to the Pro Bowl, but he is an adequate #2 and a nice #3. Crayton does bring something to the table – consistent production at a decent level. He has significant value to this team, especially without TO.

crayton doesn’t suck… hes a reliable receiver (minus a drop here or ther) and he knows how to find the open spot in the middle… and he can throw the ball as well

by CowboysFan4Life on Mar 5, 2009 9:21 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He’s ability to throw the ball…

…means nothing to me. He is a wide out.

This crazy obsession people seem to have with the wild cat formation is mind boggling to me. Trick plays are not going to win a super bowl for the Cowboys and the Wild Cat formation is flash in pan that defenses were already shutting down by the end of last season. It is not the magical miracle that so many seem to think it is.

Furthermore we’ll see how well he finds the open spot in the middle when defenses no longer have to worry about double teaming the outside.

I don't care about the wildcat

Crayton is an average to slightly above average WR when he’s used as a slot WR or against zone defenses. He has very reliable hands and he blocks well on run plays. Not to mention he’s reliable as a punt returner. he’ll either fair catch, or pick up 10 yds, that’s good enough for me. He’s not a superstar, but he’s much better than you give him credit for.

How is wr a hole?

How can we determine this till Romo has an offseason to work with Roy? We know crayton is dependable at #2/3, and austin has a ton of potential. We also know that with Witten, Bennet, and our pass cacthign rbs and hopefully a greater emphasis on the run game not as many balls need to go to wrs as they did when TO was here.

TO had 1050 yards last year, 200+ of which came in that 9ers game when they refused to press him. That is by no means a great season.

It doesnt prove anything. The fact he had 1050 yds and 10tds when his starting qb had to be out 3games and the whole offense regressed.

Everyone in the league knew all they had to do was bracket him with a corner and a safety and he was nuetralized…..

When the opponents defense is sliding a safety over the top of Owens routes…

…the offense needs to take advantage of that by going elsewhere. People are loaded with excuses on here for RW but the truth is this guy couldn’t beat single coverage all year long. Why will that be different next year?

Austin has yet to have a healthy season. Crayton benefited from having Owens and Witten on the field now half that equation is gone.

by Barrett14 on Mar 5, 2009 7:53 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Try this

T.O. does not fit in with very many teams so your trade partners would probably be counted on one hand. Those teams would then know there would not be much competition for his services when cut. He had no trade value

Most FA money has already been spent and there are very few teams willing to deal with his baggage

Question or challenge i should say

People that say TO was on the decline or he dropped too many balls.

I just spent a good amount of time looking at videos. Can you find me a time when TO dropped a ball in the endzone? I can think of maybe 3 since he was a cowboy. Can you show me a clip where he dropped the ball that cost us a game?

Fact is his numbers only went down because

A. Romo was out 3 games
B. The whole Offense regressed
C. Not utilized Correctly or as Ray-Ray says Predictable.

After all that he still produced double digit TDs and 1000+yds.

Go watch his highlights i posted in a fanshot. Defenses will now stack the box because of that big Homeun Threat is GONE. For what? Austin and his whole 18 catches. Im not saying he cant get it done but noone will respect it until he does so the first half of the season will be rough.

Lets hope this Oline can turn our running Game into something fierce. Im done for now. haha

No dropped TD passes

But how about every other part of the field? Owens is a team killer, and now he’s gone. You can’t say you spent time watching videos and didn’t notice he couldn’t get off bump-and-run coverage. You can’t say you didn’t see him not block downfield. Two years ago there were at least 3 plays JJ could have gone the distance if not for being shoestrung by TO’s man. You can’t say his patterns were crap.

bigham,

"In the past he went to the QB and people told him you dont do that blah blah. So this time he goes to the coach and people jumped on him for doing that.."

"He is damn if does and damn if dont"

Incorrect. He’s damned because he ‘does’. TO never ‘does not’.

If he ‘did not’ complain to the press about Garrett several times he’d probably still be here, but he did.

If he ‘did not’ insinuate a wild conspiracy against him amongst his QB and TE he’d probably still be here, but he did.

There’s about 160 other WR’s in the league who ‘did not’ get the sack today because they ‘did not’ bad mouth their coaches and teammates.

I’ll keep saying it: Terrell Owens has been sacked by three teams. The common denominator here is Terrell Owens.

Smith puts its out there that Owens is a scapegoat, which might be partially true, but one of the reasons he’s a scapegoat is because of the network he works for.

Right or wrong, the company he gets paid by is the one that has spent the last three years villifying him and having 20 minutes specials on his rebel ways.

Giants fan here

But I gotta say, the Cowboys are taking major “addition by subtraction” steps in this offseason. Dropping TO is absolutely the right thing to do. Forget about numbers, production up/down… the guy is the most famous team cancer in the NFL. Cutting him will allow Dallas to become “Romo’s Team.”
It is what happened in New York after Tiki Barber left… great numbers, but undermined the team’s overall chemistry, direction, and QB leadership.

You play to win the game!

by Simms-McConkey on Mar 5, 2009 8:11 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

The Barber anology

occurred to me too and I hope Dallas has similar success as the Giants did after Tiki retired :) but you cant argue with TO’s production and if the receivers on teh team, namely RW11, PC, Austin dont step up then there’s a big problem. Remember that the Giants had Brandon Jacobs to replace Tiki.

by Sean N on Mar 5, 2009 8:24 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Next?

Who replaces TO? He must have been a GIANT cancer in the locker room because on the field he we very productive. I was not a big TO fan and will not shed a tear about his departure, but I wonder if this is a good move.

If Little Jerry talked Big Jerry into this move and it turns out to be a failure, will Little Jerry get canned?

in the absolute worst case situation

we lost our sb chance for next year. There was no way TO was staying longer than that. And evne then, there is a good amount of logic saying that by spreading the ball around, we cna develop our younger players and our qb can have room to grow into a leader, so our offense will possibly even improve over last year.

It would only save money if we had cut him after his signing bonus had depreciated, and he was due a huge base salary only. In those cases, teams will cut a player and sign him back to a more cap friendly deal.

I don't see

how we have gotten better as a team this offseason. We lose 2 starting CBs, All Pro WR, Kevin Burnett, and everyone in the NFC Beast ( – Philly) has gotten better. Let’s hope Washington doesn’t somehow get T.O. so he doesn’t get to beat our corners twice a year.

on that note..

I would love to make something happen for Anquan Boldin. That guy is a beast.

by foyesboys on Mar 5, 2009 9:10 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i think we have enough playmakers on our offense right now

i’d like to see our running game flourish a little more than our passing game…

if we have a successfull running game, then we def. have enough players in the receiving game to stay dangerous

by CowboysFan4Life on Mar 5, 2009 9:31 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The running game showed "flashes" last year…

…but nothing boarding on consistent. To be honest I don’t think the Cowboys have the line to be a dominant rushing team. Their big but have sloppy technique and struggle immensely with stunts and run blitzes. Of course their pass protection is even worse.

Henry wasn't going ot be starting

and considering Scandrick is a slot cb and henry doesn’t come close, henry probably would’ve sat on teh bench a lot.

Do you really regret us cutting pacman?

Canty was overpaid, and Burnett probably will be.

The Giants improved on their position of strength without doign ANYTHING to address the gaping hole at wr in their offense – they’re going ot the year with hixon at number one and smith at number 2 right now.

by foyesboys on Mar 5, 2009 9:09 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

We don't

I don’t regret cutting Pacman, it’s just in theory. We’re now relying on unproven commodities: Orlando Scandrick, Mike Jenkins, Roy WIlliams, Miles Austin, Keith Brooking (puke), to lead us to the Super Bowl.

Good Morning everyone

Is this a new era in Cowboys philosophy? T.O., Pac Man, and Tank all gone this off season. You decide.

Oh by the way this will be our new WR after draft day:

After watching your video clip, he seems to be an outstanding route runner with blazing speed and great hands.

Where do most draftniks project him to be selected, quincyyyyy?

by troysboys on Mar 5, 2009 9:31 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

A thought

Even though I can’t stand them, I’ve always admired how the Patriots handle player personnel. They seem to have a knack for figuring out the exact moment a player (one one who can still perform) is no longer of use to them. They dump good player after good player. You think they’re going to start losing, but then they just plug the hole and keep on winning. Meanwhile, the released player does little to nothing in his new home.

Maybe this is why we pulled the trigger on Owens now. Better to do it now than to wait for the inevitable full-on decline (which would probably occur in the middle of a season).

agreed

I think this was much more of a business decision than people give jerry credit for. TO was obviously on the decline and that could very well accelerate this year.

One thing people are forgetting.....

this locker room is still split-many supported TO like Barber, Crayton, Williams. Do you think that they are going to magically start liking Romo?

by texstar on Mar 5, 2009 9:08 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

That's assuming they didn't like Romo.

Just because they liked Owens doesn’t mean they don’t like Romo. Surely it’s possible to do both?

Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry - ESPN

by Nelson... on Mar 5, 2009 9:10 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe I was watching too much ESPN.....

but Werder was saying that Crayton,Roy W, and Barber were very much on TO’s side. I didn’t mean “like” because who cares if you like someone. I guess the word is “suported”. Hopefully they can put aside all differences. I guess it’s put up or shut up huh?

by texstar on Mar 5, 2009 9:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I can't imagine

That any of the WRs will cause much trouble over TO getting cut, b/c it gives them the opportunity for an increased role in the offense.

but hopefully over time things start to get better. Like if we actually win games.

by witten82 on Mar 5, 2009 9:10 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What does this mean for Tony Romo and our offense?

I don’t expect Romo to have insane numbers like 2007 again. I see us focusing more on the run with the studs that we have. Run first, pass second. I like Miles Austin and all, but I don’t see how subtracting T.O. and adding Miles Austin to the starting lineup makes us a better vertical team.

Also..can you imagine had we not been blown out by the Eagles, and actually won? Yeah, me neither :D

by bryangene on Mar 5, 2009 9:10 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

yeah no kidding

or if we lost 27-24 something like that…

What the French?! Toast!

by thebigham on Mar 5, 2009 9:11 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It simply means Jason Garret...

Will have no kore excuses and his dumbness will be easier to show. The most predictable play caller in NFL history will now really show up and Romo will pay for it next season. Look for all the blame that T.O. took last year to go to Romo now. I feel bad for the guy.

by ManTab on Mar 5, 2009 9:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Wonder boy Assistant Coach Garrett has no scapegoat, and the same thing goes for Romo. How does this affect JG’s play calling when he is pass oriented. I would like to see more runs from our Trio any who. Hopefully this eliminates Romo’s game losing mistakes. I see us going 9-7 next year, and that is being optimistic.

by bryangene on Mar 5, 2009 9:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Calling out Garrett is so retarded.

You Garrett haters act like he should be shaking in his boots now that TO is gone. HE WANTED TO GONE!!! He thinks the offense will be better without TO.

Besides, I don’t remember JG ever throwing Owens under the bus, do you? But I sure remember TO ripping Garrett to shreds. (Yes, I know Romo didn’t back him up, either, so save it.)

Garrett wanted Owens gone, so he has a plan. Now we have to wait and see if it works. But he’s not scared.

by Johnny Cage on Mar 5, 2009 9:26 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Calm down Jason..

didn’t mean to offend you.

by bryangene on Mar 5, 2009 9:27 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Garrett

can’t even gain the respect of his players, and he’s our coach in waiting? He went from 2007 where he could have coached anywhere to 2008 where nobody wanted him. Our offense has been described as vanilla by many an NFL player. That’s all on Garrett.

by bryangene on Mar 5, 2009 9:29 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Or

that’s what happens when you have no leaders on your team, not even your coaches. I’m tired of this “cancer” term that ESPN has made up in association with Owens.

by bryangene on Mar 5, 2009 9:35 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

and im tired of this leadership bull that the same ESPN created

leadership is overrated… sooner or later, players just need to be accountable… has nothing to do with leadership, it has to do with being a good teammate… and what a better way to be a good teammate, than to learn from mr me first to

by CowboysFan4Life on Mar 5, 2009 9:38 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry but I disagree....

I’m not a Steve Young fan, but he made a lot of sense as well last night. He said that when TO was in the locker-room with him in SF, they had a strong enough locker-room to suffocate this kind of thing. I’m not defending TO but leadership is very important.

I hope thats what happens

I love Romo, but if his air-it-out numbers decline I won’t be upset. Maybe he’s meant to be in a well run balanced system. It will take a lot of pressure off him, and maybe give him the idea that he can’t, and doesn’t have to do it himself.

by witten82 on Mar 5, 2009 9:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Defenses will stack the line...

with 8 or 9 guys and stuff the run… daring the Cowboys to beat them with pass.

If our offensive line

can improve their play then stack away. Give Romo some time and he will kill you. I think this is a non issue as long as our OL takes care of business and Garret doesn’t get pass happy again.

One of the good things about Romo

is he is the type of QB, like Favre, who should be able to spread the ball around to a lot of different WRs and get the most out of them.

by Blammo on Mar 5, 2009 9:26 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The main concern is the players don't scare defenses like TO does....

remember back to 2007 when TO went down with the sprained ankle? They couldn’t beat their man and Witten got double teamed. I’m not saying they cant but they are going to have to step it up.

Bottom line......

It’s put up or shut up for everybody….Roy Williams cant complain anymore, JG’s gotta prove his 3mil salary, and Romo/Witten gotta prove it because they don’t have anyone else to blame. They made their beds so lie in it. I hope these guys on the team realize that by getting their wish of TO being gone, they just put the spotlight on themselves.

Read Sam Hurd's lips...

DMN blog:

"Hurd said that it’s up to assistant head coach Jason Garrett but it should help Tony Romo.

“I know it takes a lot of pressure off Romo focusing on one main feature, like Terrell,” Hurd said. “As a guy like him, he demands the ball and it made you want to try to get him the ball. With him being released [Romo] doesn’t have one main guy, so he can look at every one of us and see whichever one is open on anyu play and get the ball to him.”
