Cowboys cut safety Roy Williams

The Dallas Cowboys are in a cutting mood. Jerry Jones pulled the trigger on Terrell Owens last night and now he's done the same for safety Roy Williams.

After attempts to trade the five-time Pro Bowl safety failed, the Cowboys decided to release Williams, their No. 1 draft pick in 2002.

By cutting Williams, the Cowboys save roughly $2 million in salary-cap space in 2009 and close the book on a player who was once the face of the franchise.

Excuse, my ignorance....

So with the Roy cut and TO does that mean that we are now down to 7mil instead of the 9 mil cap hit?

by texstar on Mar 5, 2009 9:23 AM CST reply actions

Sort of

I think cutting TO just cost us like an additional 6-700k against the cap than if we had kept him. So cutting Roy will save us roughly 2mil, so now we are saving about $1.5mil compared to the same time yesterday.

That's what I'm thinking....

they were saying on Sirius this morning, this cap hit thing is really confusing. Players don’t really get that money but it still goes against the cap. If my fuzzy math is correct, I think it’s a 7mil cap hit

I had no idea when I woke up this morning

it would be such a wonderful day!!!

He absolutely had to go and I beleive TO will be an addition by subtravtion.

Think Texas Rangers 2006? when they traded A-Roid and damn near made the playoffs with a bunch of kids and no name players

Ok wiseguy

How about when NY Gints got rid of Shockey and Eli went on to win the Super Bowl?!

My point being addition by subtraction

by WALKERMAN on Mar 5, 2009 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

He was hurt but I do not think he was rehabbing with the team. He defintely never got on the field again

My point being Shockey had overshadowed Eli and made him gun shy.

I think TO took some of Romo’s improvisation skills out of the mix last year because of all the whining about touches.

I think this move lets Romo be the Jedi we all know and love!

Took the improvisation out himself. He practiced so HARD in trying to be Tom Brady, that he failed in everything else.

You've hit the nail on the head, Fan

Think of what our line mid-90’s did with Emmitt…now we have marion, felix, and tashard? If we can stay healthy and draft gamers, we can seriously pound the rock and take some of the weight of Romo’s shoulders.

BTW, I'm not pro-Romo or pro-TO.....

I’m just saying that if this team wants to get anywhere and build a championship team, they can’t be throwing anybody under the bus even if the plays suck etc. I’m not arguing for/against Romo or TO. It’s just a fact, that to have real team chemistry you can’t say anything publicly about coaches, teammates or heck I’ll throw in the ballboy. Heck, none of us liked JG’s offense but you don’t go public with it.

And I never said it was ok for Romo to question Garrett at the podium. Never. It was dumb. But let’s put it in perspective. Romo said one sentence, he never even used Garrett’s name, he could have been taking about other things but it did sound like a criticism of the scheme. Dumb.

Now compare to TO’s repeated whining from week 3 onwards about Garrett, then Witten, then Romo. There’s no honest comparison between Tony Romo and Terrell Owens when it comes to this type of thing.

TO has been axed by three different NFL teams for character reasons and every time it was not his fault?

Criticizing his QB again, and arguing with both Brad Childress and Andy Reid until he’s sacked, again: Not Owens fault, he’s the victim.

Arguing with Todd Haley in Dallas. Not Owens fault.

Complaining to the press that Jason Garrett’s scheme is the reason for his average year, Not Owens fault.

Getting cut by the Cowboys because he’s causing locker room drama for his coaches and QB in his third straight team, not his fault, he’s a scapegoat.

How do all the other 150+ WR’s in this league have virtually no problem with the sort of despicable treatment that WR’s obviously routinely get?

The better news is he wont be in the NFC East....

Giants already came out and said they are not interested…..Philly…..yeah right and….

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Redskins have issued an adamant "no thanks" regarding the possibility of signing Owens.

(We’ve separately heard that agent Drew Rosenhaus had already placed a call to the team about T.O.)

Mort raises a good point about the Redskins’ position — they weren’t interested three years ago, when Owens was three years younger.

TORY HOLT

wants out of St. Louis. It’s likely he’ll get cut before march 17th as he’s due a 1.7 million dollar roster bonus. Holt is 32 years old, would be a positive influence and a leader on a team. Plus he can fill the #1 receiver spot, and let roy williams be where he belongs at the #2 spot.

by Aaron Novinger on Mar 5, 2009 10:48 AM CST up reply actions

I dont

think these moves are trying to make the team younger …. I think it’s getting rid of bad locker room guys or guys who have lost a step. Holt comes from Martz’s system, which uses the same terminology as Garrett’s. I’m not a huge Crayton guy, but I do like Austin. I think if Holt gets released, if Jerry really wans to win next year, and the Boys sign him to a 2 year deal, it’s a good deal. Plus, you add another good locker room guy.

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

by Dub_TC on Mar 5, 2009 11:38 AM CST up reply actions

True

But then why does Torry want out of St. Louis? Isn’t that affecting the locker room there?

Miami and Atlanta and Baltimore and Arizona all proved this past year that sucky teams can make a quick turnaround, especially with a new and improved coaching staff.

I’d rather develop team chemistry with impressionable young players rather than guys who are disgruntled with their past organizations.

Take the T.O. out of Thong and you have hng

OK, nevermind that nonsense-

Some time back, Raf put up a post about T.O.s numbers and how they indicated a decline in production (save for one bounce year) and that at 36, he is close to falling off a cliff soon. If you think in terms of the balance between what this years production might have been vs long term team value maybe it was time to make the break. We’ll see what happens this year. I like T.O. and his passion, I wish him the best.

As far as the Thong, he was a liability. Every OC in the league knew that he was a weak link and attacked it relentlessly. I think he’s a good guy, but his one dimensional play has been exposed. We are better off without having Roy in the D backfield.

Get your popcorn ready...

As the Cowboys go 5-11, Marion Barber gets hurt half way thru the season because we got to run him 40 times a game, because our WR can’t get off the Line of scrimmage. Witten will have 120 catches with 7 TD’s…. but you know what the new headline with be… Roy Williams wants out of Dallas because Witten an Romo are drawing up plays behind his back.

Heck you guys are gonna need someone else to blame for why the Cowboys will suck @#$# next season why not blame the poor man’s version of T.O?

But I perfer to look at the bright side… At least the T.O. haters will be happy though and thats all that matters… Can you say 1st overall pick for 2010… I can’t Wait!! GO COWBOYS!!!

T.O. was declining.

This team will rise and fall on exectution. The only major loss was Canty, IMO, and Dallas was never

It’s on the draft now. They need an OL and strength up the middle on D.

The perception

there was no chemistry problems is one of stubborness. I agree with your list BTW. But something had to be done about this team not being a “team”. There has not been a single NFL team that has been able to devise a blueprint for handling T.O. which includes us. It’s unfortunate but has been proven three times

by cow_fanatic on Mar 5, 2009 11:07 AM CST up reply actions

I hear you...

but so far… the only negative source of what T.O was doing in the locker room was an unnammed source. All the named sources, Crayton, Newman, Ware, Hurd, James, Davis, Johnson (tank). RW II. Everyone who was man enough to get on record defended all the T.O did as a teammate and a player.

The year before last every one was chuckling about him crying over Romo… now he’s this cancer? (again) What changed? what happened?

Was it him not getting the ball? or was it the offense as a whole just not executing… The OL not blocking, Romo not hitting open WR’s. Garrett not adjusting at halftime to take advantage of what the defense was showing.

It seemed like it always took us a 2 and a half QTR’s to figure out what was going almost every game…and most games and in 5 of those games it was too late.

In the next 12 weeks, TO had 213 yards against SF and and 600 against the remaining 11 teams (average of about 55 a game ). Not including the games Romo sat, TO had 213 yards against sf and 500 in the 8 remaining games….an average of about 62 a game.

by DalaiLuke on Mar 5, 2009 11:59 AM CST reply actions

Analogy

Stop bunching all three TO stops together to justify cutting TO now. Even if TO deserved to be cut in Philly and Frisco, this fails to establish that he’s done anything as a Cowboy. (Remember Keyshawn? Went from “Cancer” to model player). When TO got here, we knew about his previous stints and took him anyway. As such, our decision to keep him or cut him should not be influenced by his past actions. I’m from Philadelphia and think that the Eagles probably should have just paid him, but I’ll concede that his divorce with the Eagles was entirely his fault. However, Jerry didn’t think that past was relevant. Judge TO on his behavior as a Cowboy. If you still believe he should be cut, fine. That’s a different argument and I’m not sure which side I’m on yet. I like TO, but don’t know the details. If TO was cut because he was hurting the Cowboys, I like the move; but if he was cut because of the perception that he’s hurting the Cowboys (largely formed by the media and TO’s past) then I think it was a mistake.

Consider a guy who stole 2 cars early on in life. He’s now lawfully employed and knows that if he gets caught again, the judge won’t be happy. He doesn’t steal cars anymore and he’s great at his job. His boss is aware of his past, but trusted him enough to give him a job.

During the crime season, the police have enough work to do and can make a living, but during the no-crime season, the police worry that they’re not going to make any money (assume they get paid on "merit").

As a result, there are some overzealous police officers, who not only protect and serve, but try to entrap former criminals in crime. They throw car keys at him, open car doors and walk away and even bring him to dealerships at night and unlock the front doors.

Unfortunately for our man, a car is stolen (‘Boys miss the Playoffs) and he’s the prime suspect. The whole town thinks he’s guilty (On an ESPN poll, 49 states said Cowboys should cut TO, including Texas…how much do these voters know?) and is pressuring the prosecutor to bring charges (economic pressure…remember that Football really is just a business).

The law doesn’t allow us to convict someone on the basis of past behavior, nor does it allow us to convict a victim of entrapment, why should our calculus here be any different? If TO was a good player and teammate in Dallas (which is certainly in dispute) he should still be a Cowboy.

I guess I just don’t know if TO really stole the car…And I think that’s the sentiment a lot of us share. We feel like he got cut because everyone thinks he’s a cancer, not because he is one.

As yourself this: Is there anything TO could have done to really improve his image or is the world just too damn unforgiving?

PS-I was really planning on getting a lot of work done today…Jerry just made that impossible!

by NICK L on Mar 5, 2009 1:48 PM CST reply actions

I agree with much of this notion

However, you HAVE TO look at his behavior in Philly and SF. I think people within the organization were seeing his behavior develop into something that would’ve become SF-ish. They wanted to nip it in the bud before that flourished.

by AikmanNailedMySis on Mar 5, 2009 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

What a victim of society...

If you want to avoid all the other stuff, why don’t we just say this… he couldn’t beat press coverage and is a 36 year old that relies more on physical skills then route running.

by Seanrude on Mar 5, 2009 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

I kind of agree with all of you

I think that if the coaching staff really expected a bad situation with TO, he should be gone.

I think it could be a football decision, but only if the team REALLY like Miles Austin. Because it costs more to cut him than keep him and only Roy could arguably be a better player at this point (I think TO at 36 might still be the better player, but who really knows). So basically, the only reason I can see this being a football decision is if the team thinks TO is stopping Austin’s development or taking away from Roy or Witten’s production. I expect a rookie WR pretty early, but it’s obviously not going to be anyone of TO’s caliber.

It’s clear that To will not be a back up, so it’s certainly plausible.

My point is just that I hope he wasn’t cut the reason I laid out. I’m not saying that he was cut for that reason.
