Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged an Ode to T.O.

Yes I am one of  "those" T.O. sympathists. Why? Becasue I love football. I love seeing it played with passion, intensity, and skill.  Terrell Eldorado Owens embodied all of these attributes. He was also an a$$hole, but I don't need to like a player to want to cheer for him.

T.O. loves him some T.O. and Manny Ramirez is just being Manny, and let's not forget Rodman. This is my own personal opinion but what I think all 3 of these professional athletes have in common is all are/were horrible teammates and that late in their careers they were brought in to do one thing, bring their respectives teams a championship based on their abilities to play the game

I think Jerry Jones is weak and succumbed to media pressure by cutting T.O. And me saying that is no joke because I have defended Jerry many times before. I think Garret is a hypocrite and blaming T.O. for his piss poor coaching as an O.C.. Garret took the job knowing T.O. was on the roster. If it was a him or me situation then why did he take the job? T.O. was a jerk, whiny, cry baby in SF and Philly so why did the Boy's sign him? Because he is a great player. His numbers speak for themselves.

Were said numbers in decline, yes, but thinking Williams, Crayton, or Miles are going to put up better numbers this season is a reach in my opinion.  His age may dictate that he was due to further decline but has there ever been a receiver in such great physical condition as Owens? I think James Lofton played to the ripe of old age of 37 and Owens looks to be in much better shape. And anyways T.O. was already paid so what does it hurt to find out?

And before anyone goes off on a rant, no I do not think by cutting T.O. the Cowboys are gonna go all Detroit Lions on us and be the worst team in the NFL,  and yes I know there are other great players like Witten, Barber, and Jones, but I do think that they lessened their chances at a Super Bowl run. This team is less talented without T.O. that is what I am saying.

Don't fault T.O. for being himself especially when everybody already knew who he was from the get go. He was cut for all the wrong reasons.

Thanks for reading.

God, if I could punch anyone on Earth right in their friggin head...

Manny Ramirez would be in my Top 3. I love how the morons at ESPN crucify T.O. for his “being a cancer,” but Manny is only a good hitter, is a terrible teammate, and they just giggle and say “That’s just Manny being Manny.” Sorry just hearing his name just put me into a ranting mood…

Not So Much

I’m sorry my friends, but we disagree here.

T.O.’s talent was NEVER in question.

The question was whether he elevated the play of those around him or not. I think we all know the answer to that, regardless of how you feel about his double-digit TD’s.

I am of the opinion that you will see a new and improved Tony Romo, a more formidable ground game and a much more cohesive locker room in 2009 than ever before. Those things should make fans happy.

Regardless, bemoaning what is done isn’t productive. We’re going into battle with the players we have, not the ones we don’t.

"The question was whether he elevated the play of those around him or not." ????

He was not brought into elevate anybody else’s play and how does a WR elevate the play of others?

If his talent was never in question and he scored double digit TD’s and 1,000 receiving yards what more do you want?

Regardless, bemoaning what is done isn’t productive.

Then what’s the point of having a blog if you are just going to agree with everything?

Side effects

When you bring in a talented player, your primary goal is to get great play from them. But in almost every case you are also expecting the ancillory benefit of them elevating the play of others around them. In fact, sometimes that IS the goal of bringing in a player. How does a WR in particular elevate the play of others? By drawing double coverage, thus taking coverage away from another teammate, allowing them an easier time of making plays. You think TJ Housh didnt benefit from having Chad Johnson being double covered nearly every play? Do you remeber the miserable failure Alvin Harper was when he went to Tampa (I think) and didnt have Michael Irvin drawing double coverage every play? Another way a WR can elevate the play of his teammates is by working hard in practice, in the film room, during the off season. By mentoring younger players. By setting an example. TO, by all accounts, did ALL of these things. And many of the other receivers followed his example. The problem was that part of the example he set was not being a team first player. And that was starting to filter down to the other players that looked up to him. One of my favorite TO lines was, “I love me some me!” And while it was funny as hell, we are starting to have players who all love them some them. Will the offense suffer without TO out there? Time will ultimately tell but I wouldnt argue at all that that will very likely be the case. Especially at first.
You said, “If his talent was never in question and he scored double digit TD’s and 1,000 receiving yards what more do you want?” Well I’ll tell you what I want. I want that and I want it from someone who doesnt turn around a gripe that he didnt have 1100 yards receiving and 20+ TDs. I want someone who produces like Fitz, Andre Johnson, Marvin Harrison (4 years ago) and then thanks his teammates afterwards for blocking and running and catching and allowing him to get what he got. Not someone who gets the ball thrown to him 18 times in one game and complains that it wasnt 19 times. That’s what I want.
One more observation. Aside from the overly talked about “benefits” of getting rid of TO, I think this will not only give other players a chance to step up and show what, if anything, they can do, it will also let us know exactly what kind of coach we have in JG. Is he the boy genius we all hope he is, or is he “just another coach”. JG has a wonderful chance to prove his critics wrong by adapting and customizing this offense to play to the strengths of the players he has without the need to feed giant egos. I’d like to know that before we hand the reins to him in another year or two.

Thanks for your well written and thought out post and I understand your argument but...

Me, you and Jerry knew before hand that T.O. was, is, and always will be a prima donna.
He has never been nor ever will be Fitz, Andre Johnson or Marvin Harrison, and expecting anybody to be something they are not is ridiculous.

Why sign him in the first place or even extend his contract if you are not willing to deal with the baggage that comes with him? T.O. never hid who he was.

He was brought in based on his talent and talent alone and now he is made to be the scapegoat.

Really?

He was brought in based on talent alone? He wasn’t expected to act like a good teammate?

How do you know that to be true?

When has he ever acted like a good teammate?

NEVER. Expecting a man in his mid 30’s to change who he is is ridiculous. I’m not saying it is impossible but don’t expect it. Accept people for who they are. If they change for the better then bravo, added bonus.

Manny Ramirez will never be a good teammate. Allen Iverson will never be a good teammate. Rasheed Wallace will never shut his yap. All of these athletes are great at what they do but have piss poor personalities. Don’t expect that to change. Yet teams still continue to sign them because of how they perform.

Let T.O. talk all he wants. Sticks and stones my man. It’s that simple.

If He Was Only Brought Here to Elevate the Play of Those Around Him...

He did his job…
(1) He was a team player despite what the media might say, pay attention to his teammates…not the media.
True there may have been a few players that didn’t agree with his tactics (most importantly Romo grew tired of them thus
affecting his play), but for the most part they will all say he was a great teammate.
(2) How much double coverage can you draw and give the other recievers one on one, but yet they still can’t catch the ball.
The media always talked about how many dropped passes he had, I’m sure if you did a pass for pass evaluation, Patrick
Creyton had more drops than T.O. and his drops were when he was W I D E open. Austin and Stanback can’t stay healthy,
and Hurd is still developing in his third year.
(3) Not only should his double teams have opened other WRs, but running lanes should have been a little easier with the added
attention T.O. received. T.O. can’t elevate the OLs play. If he yelled and got on their A$$ for not blocking, the media would see
it as him complaining and being disgruntled…

T.O. was in a no win situation with the media unless he played all world AND won a Super Bowl…actually he was in the same
situation with a lot of the fans also.

He was the most productive and consistent WR we have had since Irvin…
The only thing to really say now is …WHO’S NEXT UP TO BE THAT BIG WR THREAT WE NEED?

T.O. I will miss you if no one else will.

Not sure what sideline tirade(s) you WEREN’T watching, but okay…

I’m sure he was the ultimate teammate.

I’m sure he’s unemployed for the third time for no reason whatsoever.

I’m sure he brought none of the media scrutiny upon himself.

I’m sure he’s a victim and every team in the league will be begging to get him onto their roster.

Seriously?

Have you ever played a team sport in your life?

If so, you wouldn’t be asking how a teammate is supposed to contribute beyond his production.

My friend, that is the beauty of team sports. Look at the last two Super Bowl champs. No one would call them the most talented teams, but together, they were much greater than the sum of their parts when it counted most.

Football, Basketball, and Rugby

And you still failed to tell me how a WR can improve the play of others beyond his production. Please enlighten me since you know so much more than me but avoid answering the question.

Are you nuts? The Giants and the Steeler’s aren’t talented?

Teams sports are great but you don’t need to be holding hands and singing kumbaya to win championships.

5Blings...Yes...Seriously

I played a couple of team sports and some relyed heavily on the more talented to lift the team…such as baseball and basketball…but in football it is truelly a team sport where the entire team has to play as one to win consistently.
T.O. can only do what a WR is suppossed to do…
1-He can’t throw himself the ball (although I’m sure he would if hecould) you have to rely on your QB to do that
2-He can’t hike the ball
3-He is not a RB unless its a reverse
4-He can’t block on running plays unless the OL first do their job
-Then the QB has to get the ball to the RB
-Then the RB has to make it to and through a hole or around the end to get to the level where T.O. can
block for him as he has done on several occassions-if you don’t think he has…go back and watch more
      game tape.
5-He can’t run the routes and catch the balls thrown to the other WRs and the TE
6-He doesn’t play defense unless he is knocking down a pass about to be intercepted or running down a
DB who made an interception (which he has done also) and
7-He is not the coach to make up the game plan and make adjustments through out the game.

So yes…football is the ultimate team game and everyone…EVERYONE…has to do their part.
And by the way, I played football…and played very well…I was a co-captain on several occassions because
we elected our team captains from weak to weak depending on hard work in practice and play from the
previous game.

The question is what kind of sports did you play… maybe golf, tennis, oh wait no it was table tennis where you
are the team.

Come on AFB you know that argument holds no weight

The Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game in over a decade so nobody on the current roster has won a ton of playoff games.

13-3 make the playoffs no complaints with T.O.
9-7 miss the playoffs with an entire team that collapsed in December, let’s get rid of T.O.

Game Recognize Game

by pretty ricky on Mar 6, 2009 1:16 PM CST up reply actions

It doesn't?

How many playoff games did Owens win not in Dallas?

I’m not hating, I’m just saying…you really don’t think there isn’t any reasons to get rid of him?

I’m not denying that his production will be hard to replicate, but not impossible.

I don’t work in football, I’m not an expert, just a fan.

But when you see 31 other teams that are showing very little interest in a hall of fame receiver, that raises a red flag.

Whether its personality issues or just the fact that he’s going to be a 36 year old receiver who doesn’t run great routes, there has to be a reason.

I’ve said it a million times, I wasn’t with or against the get rid of T.O. campaign.

But “ode’s to terrel owens”? Give me a freaking break.

It’s always somebody elses fault apparently. One player gets canned from three teams, but its the QB’s, OC’s, WR Coaches, Head Coaches, or whomevers fault.

Owens as bad as the media portrays him? Nope

But he isn’t the golden god you have set him up to be either.

Dallas makes me act like Christian Bale......

by AirforceBat on Mar 6, 2009 1:29 PM CST up reply actions

Did you read the first paragraph in this post?

I never claimed he was a golden god. In fact I come right out and call him an a$$hole. The “ode” was just a title. Got you to read this post didn’t?

Ultimately I am not trying to get you or anyone else to agree with me I just want you to see my point as to why I think Jerry was foolish in cutting T.O. and taking a dead money cap hit on a WR that still has talent.

So let me try and elaborate…

There are plenty of reasons to get rid of T.O. but those same reasons existed before he was a Cowboy. Since he was canned from 2 other teams for being a locker room issue and Jerry had a problem with that then why sign him in the first place? T.O. has never hid who he was.If age was the issue why did Jerry extend his contract 3 years?

It’s like trying to keep a wolf as a pet. If the wolf that you took care of as a pet turns on you is it the wolf’s fault? No because he is a wolf. You took in that wolf knowing that wolves are wild and can turn on you. It’s your fault for thinking a wolf would make a good pet not the wolf. T.O. was a malcontent before he came to Dallas. Everybody knew that. So when he acts out as he has always done is it his fault for being himself?

I work with loud mouth jerks that I rely on everyday. And as long as they perform and get the job done you know what I do? Accept them for who they are and not let them affect me. I do what I have to do to complete the task at hand even if it involves putting up with a jerk. Because guess what? Jerks are everywhere and they gotta work to.

I never blamed another player for T.O. ‘s release. But if Jerry wasn’t willing to take on the media scrutiny that comes with signing a player like T.O. he should have never signed him or better yet extended his contract and then cut him a year later. If Garret was never willing to take on the responsibility of coaching a player like T.O. he should have never taken the O.C. position.

AFB I too am no expert, just a fan like you, been reading you posts and comments since BSR. Hope you can kinda see my point now?

Oh come on.

You’re comparing a wolf to Owens?

You don’t choose to be a wild animal.

You choose to do situps in your front lawn.

I understand what you’re saying, and maybe this is Jerry saying I mad a mistake.. but come on, you’re reaching.

Oh and without all the stuff in the locker room… how about the fact that not only he is a pain in the ass but he is a pain in the ass that can’t get off of press coverage and is turning 36.

by AirforceBat on Mar 6, 2009 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

No one

has ever said tha T.O. is a choir boy or a Saint portrayed as otherwise by the media, but we all
know that it doesn’t take much for the media to blow anything he says or does out of proportion.
I’m not saying that his production can’t be replicated by someone else or even a group of WRs,
but his presence changes the way a team schemes for your offense.

True he has not won a playoff game since he was in San Fran, so now it is his fault all of a sudden
that Romo can’t hold on to a FG snap of a ball that looked like it was new out of the pack and wiped
down with vaseline. I guess it is also his fault that Creyton dropped two key passes against the Giants
in the playoffs, Creyton stopped on a play when he was wide open in the end zone had he not given up,
and the OL all of a sudden forgot how to block.

ONE MAN CANNOT DO EVERYTHING IN A TEAM SPORT.

I wish the other 51 players on the Cowboys squad had his drive and passion to win. There is not a WR
in the NFL, that believes he is the best, who doesn’t want the ball thrown to him.
At least he earned the star that was on his helmet…I can’t say the same for some of the other players
on the team who thought the star made them better than they actually were or showed to be.

by cwby4lf on Mar 6, 2009 3:27 PM CST reply actions

Booooo hooooo

Really you talk about his drive and passion to win, but isn’t he the same guy who called out his coaching staff after WINNING in Washington.

TO loves to win, but he wants to have stats and win.

I’m not saying it’s his fault that they didn’t win those playoff games, but he sure as hell hasn’t put Dallas over the top.
