Orlando Scandrick at free safety for the Cowboys
OK, it's true. The Dallas Cowboys have definitively talked to Orlando Scandrick about playing some free safety this season. The word is that in certain packages Scandrick will play free safety and that Ken Hamlin will be moving over to the strong safety position.
I have this information from a source that is close to the Cowboys and I believe that it is absolutely accurate. It's not sure yet whether it will be a full-time move or only in some of the new packages on defense the Cowboys are installing. But believe it, they have already discussed this with Scandrick and they are planning to do it.

Hmmm
That’s interesting. This is the first I’ve heard of it, but he definitly has the coverage and tackling ability.

AFB, not only that...
But he’s used to playing inside because of his position as the slot corner on the Nickel. I could really see this type of allignment if we plan to play man defense with only one “true” safety on the field. We can call the set whatever you want, but if we have 3 DL, 4 LB, 3 CB, and 1 S, that is not a “base” nor is it a Nickel, but it does get our best players on the field at the same time.

Would this be packages with less corners
I mean not a nickel or dime but a like a beefed up 5-2? make sense?
Because if scandrick was moved to FS who would be 3rd corner noone dependable?

I think what might be going on...
Is he would play safety on the first two down, and move back to corner in nickel and dime packages.
Still you need to get a guy to groom for corner or safety then.

to be perfectly honest I liked what I saw from Alan Ball last year

That might be where ball comes in, when scandrick is at FS then if they roll 3-wide on a
1st or 2nd down play it will lead to ball seeing some time out there. This is going to be one of the most interesting TC in years, on both sides of the ball.

He is still a corner......
Much like Henry was last year. They just have a few packages that he will slide to safety.
My biggest question is who is going to play the slot? I guess T.New will move back inside on obvious passing downs but then who takes the outside with Jenkins? I suppose this means there not done in free agency. Sure would have liked to seen Shawn Springs.

Exactly what I was thinking
Scandrick was already looked at as a bit under sized at corner, and now they’re moving him to safety. Scandrick does play much bigger then his size but, we really need him for depth at corner. I was hoping him and Jenkins would push each other for the number 2 corner on the team.

I’m split down the middle with this whole thing.
It’s like some people have acted like TO being gone will just destroy all offense.
And it COULD, but if thats the case then Dallas was never that close to winning a superbowl anyways.
There isn’t anyone in the league that could convince me that Dallas still doesn’t have a very talented team.
There are still a ton of weapons, and my HOPE is that the production is spread out more.
Possibly a wideout is drafted, who knows?
I mean Dallas has a better team then when they went 9-7 and missed the playoffs with Drew Bledsoe.

Grizz do you think Scandrick would be a good FS?
by quincyyyyy on Mar 5, 2009 2:30 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I actually do
He is incredibly fast so he could cover a lot of ground in center field. He also played the slot and was able to deal with WR’s over the middle and actually did a decent job when asked to blitz (although it was infrequent) and was a decent tackler. What I’m worried about, like everybody, is how thin we are going to be at corner. That has to be rectified for this to work.
by Dave Halprin on Mar 5, 2009 2:33 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well the way I see it if something does happen to Jenkins or Newman then
Scandrick would be the third corner, so while he is technically not the third corner anymore he is. At least that is what I think would be the best course of action in such a situation. Moreover, when Ball was in the game I thought he did rather well. So while I do think we need another corner, I’m not overly concerned. At least that is my humble opinion.

Alright - smoke settling - Dallas has 11 picks in the draft, and not a 1st rounder
of those 11, I see a focus on meat and special teams. NT, DEs, OL we’ll take if Dallas has a well rated player falling in to their laps. I expect at least 1 TE to battle Rodney Hannah. 1 FB to battle Anderson.
After that, speedy positions will be a constant priority-

Technically speaking...
We are down 3 members of the defensive backfield – Pac, A. Henry, Thong. Admittedly, if you added them all up, factoring in suspensions and injuries, it may be more like 1.25 members.
I like Hamlin his first year, he seemed like a hitter and a leader, last year? Not so much.
Scandrick is a guided muscle. I saw that kid lay some wood on guys last year that rang his own bell as well as theirs, but they knew who he was. I like him a lot.
I think we are starting to see more and more of Wade’s defensive creativity coming through. The draft will be key. This is going to be interesting to watch.

Woody brought a lot to the position. Sure he was an LB, but I trust his assessment of how viable Scandrick will be.

Look at all those 5-11 seasons. The biggest common theme I see on the field: lack of a cornerstone QB.
For as long as Romo is around and healthy, we won’t be going 5-11 three years in a row again. I’m not saying the guy’s proven he is a one-man ticket to the Super Bowl, but a franchise QB keeps you from being consistently mediocre.

the team has a ton of holes and no depth
We need a LT, LG of the future. We have nothing proven at FS and one ILB spot. We have 3 CBs we know can play and are betting Ball and rookies can fill the rest of the spots. If Ware goes down, where will the pass rush come from. We have no true NT. We need DE depth, TE depth, C depth, and more i care not to think about. In short there are lots of needs to adress.
I am not saying that we are a sure fire looser but there are alot of ways this team can stink it up. Scandrick, Ball, and Jenkis may not be the DBs we think they are. This draft could stink. Ware could get hurt. Tony may not improve and may never find a champions mentality. Flozell could keeps having bad years like he did last year, and the OL could keep playing terribly like it did this year.
And you can not say because we have Tony we are immune. Carson Palmer is one of the best in the leauge and the Bengals stink.
I hate to be a doubter and a hater but the possibility is there. We just have to hit on a few rookies, and we are fine, but mainly what i am trying to get across is that this draft and free agency period are very important. If we get nothing but stinkers this offseason we are a very thin team.

Im torn between excitement and fear.
If you have a guy who really excells at something why do you want to immediately find him a new position. Scandrick was a beast in the slot.
Well Im going to try and break this down logically and see if it can make semse to me. I imagine this package will be on 3rd and long to begin with and see if it will help and then expand from their. In this package I guess Newman goes back to the slot ,Jenkins on 1 side and Ball on the other side. Hamlin at strong I feel has more to do with his ability to cover the TE than his run stuffing skills. Throw in the 46 or one of Wades fancy blitzes and maybe we have something.
This wont work if Hamlin cant man up with the TE or Newman doesnt have the quickness for the slot or Ball cant cover. If Ball can cover short to medium routes with Scandrick over the top for deep help. Whew! I think it can be done and the potential is there but damm its sure has my sphincter tightening.

on your first sentence squidlo. Scandrick played really, really well in the slot last year, thought he was making tremendous strides as a DB at the NFL level.
Now we’re moving him??? I gotta say, I just don’t like it—mainly because it means we’re now relying on Jenkins, and he just doesn’t have the desire for the game.
If you can’t show the desire as a rookie, you just don’t have it. Just imagine what he’ll be like when he’s handed a starting gig…

On Scandrick at FS...
Wade’s proven he knows what he’s doing on defense, so I trust he has a plan here.
But I’ve got two concerns:
1) Scandrick has proven he has the ability to be a top level slot CB. Those are very difficult to find, and I’m reluctant to use him elsewhere if we don’t have a stud replacement for him in the wings. And CB depth is a bit of a concern now, as others have mentioned.
2) Scandrick is 5’10", 190 pounds. That’s small for a safety. Hamlin is 6’1" and 209. Ed Reed is 5’11", 200 pounds. Now, I know Scandrick’s not playing SS, so he’s not going to be a run-game enforcer in the same way that Pat Watkins and RW1 were when they frequently injured themselves last year, but safeties are in the middle of the field, and they take more of a pounding than CBs do on the edge. Can Scandrick hold up as a FS? The answer may be yes, but I’m just a little worried since he’s proven himself to be such a valuable piece of our secondary.
These are great questions to be asking about a second year 5th round pick, by the way— “can he help us more as a very good CB or as an emerging talented FS?” But we want to be using this great resource we’ve uncovered in the correct way.
Larry Allen benched 700 pounds. That is Leonard Davis times two.
by Tim Wilson on Mar 5, 2009 3:56 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I look at it more like
“Can Scandrick hold up as a FS in limited situations, depending on down and distance, for a limited amount of times throughout a game”. I just don’t think he’ll be doing it all game. Just certain packages. If that’s the case then I’m on board with it.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.

Over the last several years, when teams have gone 3-wide in 1st and 2nd downs, Dallas has often left their front-7 on the field, but taken the SS off the field and replaced him with a 3rd CB.
I think Parcells did it first with Newman, Henry, and Aaron Glenn. We did it some last year as well. It basically allows us to match up CBs to WRs and still keep the front 7 in place for run defense.
I would be surprised if we DIDNT use this d-backfield combo at times, knowing how we’ve deployed over the last several years.
Now if this is a full time move, including when teams line up with only 2WRs, THEN we’ll have something to talk about.

Yeah...
…that’s my question Ridge. If it’s mainly a specialty package, then that’s not a huge deal for me, but I’m most curious right now about who our base package starting safeties are. If Scandrick is playing in that role, then that’s a big change.
Larry Allen benched 700 pounds. That is Leonard Davis times two.

Iggles trade WR Greg Lewis to Pats for 5th round pick
Here the link… http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/03/05/trade.ap/index.html
Maybe they’re clearing a spot to bring back T.O. ;)

A new 4 round mock
2. Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma
3. Rashad Johnson, FS, Alabama
4. Derrick Williams, WR, Penn State
4. Scott McKillop, ILB, Pittsburgh
by tyler2 on Mar 5, 2009 4:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't want Loadholt in round 2
I see him as a guard at the next level, and I don’t think he’s good enough to merit passing over more pressing needs (DBs, DL, even WR)

5'10" 187
I’m not sure what the prototypical size for a FS is but I would want mine bigger than Scandrick
by cow_fanatic on Mar 5, 2009 5:14 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Jim Leonhard (5-8/186/Wisconsin
I think Scandrick has the size to succeed and he will probadly add about 5lbs this will be his first year in a NFL Weight program.
by willc23 on Mar 5, 2009 8:25 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
And correct me if I'm wrong
but Leonhard plays SS. Surely, he’s not as tall as Scandrick, which further proves that Orlando would make a fine FS.

Probably the reason they haven't pursued any FA safeties this offseason...
Looks like Newman, Jenkins on the outside.. Ball in the slot. Hamlin at SS, Scrandrick at FS. I’m loving that lineup.
by Boyzfan94 on Mar 7, 2009 10:09 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
This is a passing package. I wouldnt worry about Hamlin in the box.
We will be getting a SS in the draft. We have no choice unless we sign one in FA. With this package he should be able to get his feet wet on 1st and short yardage plays. Slowly bring him around in the longer pass packages.

How come we always try to make something out of nothing
receiver out of Stanback
safety out of “the departed” Henry LOL
and now part time safety out of Scandrick
Can we just get a safety to play safety and receiver to play WR
the only good memory I have of converted player was W.Danzler’s punt return in that SF game that we still managed to loose.
by dcfanz on Mar 5, 2009 5:25 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Because an athletes an athlete
and if they’re convertible, why not?
Scandrick has proven he is fast and can cover well which is exactly what a FS needs to do. It’s just an experiment. If it works out great, if not, we still have a good corner.
by sublimezg on Mar 5, 2009 5:30 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
There is more to it, how is Stanback panning out?
yes he is fast, but so is Usain Bolt. Scandrick experiment might work, but the point is that every position has the necessities of specific skill sets and players need to have instincts associated with the position. And those are acquired by a)talent and b) lots of practice.
by dcfanz on Mar 5, 2009 5:48 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know??
How is he panning out? Hard to tell with the injuries and him being lost among receivers who have been here longer in front of him. How’s RAT panning out? There are those who have done quite well with position changes you know??

Or the rest of the idiots (starting with Garret) not liking the fact they were called out by T.O.???…..I still believe the problem is the Oline and the secondary and most of all……accountability.
All know is Im pissed and I blame stupid Garret for all of this. He’s predictable, he doesn call anything innovative…..he stinks.
by ManTab on Mar 5, 2009 5:56 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I doubt Garrett's gonna go into '09 with the same approach to the season.
He’ll be more flexible and have different gameplans depeding on the opponent. The T.O. will definitely affect some aspect of the passing game, but we gotta go into the season believing Felix and Miles and maybe even Hurd or Stanback will be healthy enough to contribute.
I’m cool with the committee approach, plus there is much more room for competition now at prime spots needed for development: WR, RB, and with the release of Roy, DB.

Now I’ve never met Jerry Jones.
I don’t KNOW Jerry Jones personally.
But I know that he pretty much does whatever he really wants to do.
Owens as his pet, it was his boy, it was probably the biggest free agent signing he ever made.
And you REALLY think that it was all on Garrett?
All of it?
And Owens?
He’s a convenient scapegoat, but I think you’d have to turn a blind eye to think that he had no problems at all.

I blame Garret...
Because he runs the offense and calls the plays. That was soooooo bad last year that the team finally gave up as we clearly saw against Philly. Romo was being killed because the protection schemes sucked. Everyone in the league in cluding our own players said we were predictable. Yes, I blame the Oline, the secondary and Garret….not the guy with over 1000 yards and 10 TD every season for the past three years. Owens is a problem when the team looses, we all know that, but the solution was to win by fixing the other issues, not by releasing one of the most productive players on your team.
by ManTab on Mar 5, 2009 6:34 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Garret should man up to his responsibilities.
when teams started jamming TO at the LOS he went to other players and never ever tried to create mismatches to free up TO

Ellis is pretty much hinting he wants to go, but will not say it directly
I present you with exhibit A:
http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/03/greg-ellis-i-think-it-takes-more-than-on.html
Greg you must want out if you are going to take that stance, is being the starter really that important?
To me Greg has personified a player that is insecure, he cannot talk to the media (he suffers from foot in mouthitis); and is someone who could relate to TO because he feels that only when he is getting his playing time that he feels he deserves that the team will benefit. So long Greg thanks for the production and I wish you luck elsewhere.

Is this a PLAN B?
I guess they already know that our 2nd round picks are usually a bust so they figure they better find a player on the roster to play it.
So is Ball now our 3rd corner? Didn’t they stick him at FS for a while too?

For all those who are pissed off and are putting the blame on JG
History repeats itself. The proof is in the pudding. I could go on and on with those on this subject.
T.O. is a drama queen, plain and simple. He is a great WR but he disrupts teams EVERYWHERE he goes. If you don’t think it’s his fault, well, your just as filled with drama and unreasoning as he is.

So, can we get more value at 51 by drafting a CB or Safety?

CB, there aren't any Saftey's in this years draft. Especially at #51.
My guess is that they’ll use the #51 on a ILB, then draft a NT. CB next and a possible WR. OT and OG will be in there too. Best possible pick after round 3.
