What was Canty's deal?

Was it twice as much? This looks like a steal doesn’t it?

by StillHateTheGiants on Mar 6, 2009 6:14 PM CST reply actions

I think thats a pretty good deal.....

Considering he had about the exact same production as Canty and he cost the Giants $17 million guaranteed. GM Jerry is doing a good job so far this off season.

But my favorite part of this move is the fact that he will be ready to play right away. No learning curve needed. Just like Brooking, he is one of Wade’s guys.

by TARHEEL PAUL on Mar 6, 2009 6:14 PM CST reply actions

And Stewart

amazing to me there are so many of Wade’s former players available in FA right now.

it makes some good sense to get guys who know his system so there’s a short learning curve, and who he knows so he has confidence in them and knows they respect him…

by scottmaui on Mar 6, 2009 7:46 PM CST up reply actions

It also shows that Wade may not be as much of a patsy as everyone thinks. These are HIS guys. Not Jerry's

Not much of a difference at all stats wise......

Igor………….179 Tackles and 11 sacks
Canty……….148 Tackles and 10 sacks

These are career stats of course

Canty is 6’7" 304
Igor is 6’6" 309

Igor does have an extra year on him but it still comes out pretty damn close.

by TARHEEL PAUL on Mar 6, 2009 6:29 PM CST reply actions

Well...

I love the deal but just to fair to Canty..those stats you listed Igor has an extra year of play on him.

YES

imo Igor is better than Canty

Igor...

Isnt’ a pass rusher, but he does his job game in and game out.

He wont’ have alot of sacks, but hopefully he’s dominate against the run and does his job.

Unless you are Marcus Spears

Then people here criticize him for doing what everyone here is saying Igor will do.

Still, great signing though. Just fans are nutty sometimes.

by mhuff13 on Mar 6, 2009 7:17 PM CST up reply actions

I completely agree with you.

Marcus Spears has done exactly what he is supposed to do. Some people just don’t understand that a 3-4 DE is not supposed to be a sack machine. Spears is coming off of his best season yet.

by TARHEEL PAUL on Mar 6, 2009 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

It seemed that

when I watched the Chargers, Igor made a lot of plays that mattered.

by beautifultyrant on Mar 6, 2009 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

Not exactly...

Spears is supposed to get penetration and shove his man into the backfield to disrupt plays. He holds his ground well, but he rarely disrupts opposing backfields like Castillo does. Also, as a 1-gap DE, he should be shooting gaps and getting penetration on passing downs.

Thank you

I can’t even say how many times I’ve written that same thing.

by Dave Halprin on Mar 6, 2009 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

I've always thought that too

Canty suffered from that perception, but people really harp on Spears.

by Blammo on Mar 6, 2009 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, hopefully he won't freelance like Canty and just play his assignment. That seems like what he does best.

Every time I see/hear his name

I think Marty Feldman. Four years of, “Abby someone, normal I think” running through my head. Yay for me! I think it’s a great acquisition though, we need it—I need it. Hopefully this will erase my immediate association to "eye"gor.

Oh... Oh, that's giving me a clue. Yeah, ye-yeah, I've got a raging clue right now.

I GUARANTEE

Igor will not be spun around and manhandled the way Canty was last season.

Canty can have his stats. I’d prefer to have an impact player. Igor… we’ll see.

by falconPUNCH on Mar 6, 2009 6:52 PM CST reply actions

Major statement

Ratliff will still be the starting NT in 2009.

by Chandus on Mar 6, 2009 6:58 PM CST reply actions

also

kind of neglects the need to adress DE or DT early in the draft, my guess i Safety in rd 2, o-line in rd 3, ilb in rd 4.

by ziggy19 on Mar 6, 2009 7:47 PM CST up reply actions

I meant early but

last yr we had Tank to rotate in and he`s gone so maybe we should look early…hey Raf can any of these guys play dt in our defense.

Hood, Evander (DT), Missouri
Brace, Ron (DT), Boston College
Marks, *Sen’Derrick (DT), Auburn
Moala, Fili (DT), Southern Cal

by ziggy19 on Mar 7, 2009 7:04 AM CST up reply actions

He's

not as athletic as Canty, but he works harder and plays tough every play. He’s gonna make a difference. Hopefully, he can stay clean.

by beautifultyrant on Mar 6, 2009 7:10 PM CST reply actions

stay clean?

not sure I follow, does this guy have a history of getting in trouble or something else?

First to six!!!

by sduncan24 on Mar 6, 2009 7:15 PM CST up reply actions

he

got suspended for steroid use.

by beautifultyrant on Mar 6, 2009 7:26 PM CST up reply actions

I wonder if that is why he is a bargain

He’s at least Canty’s equal – possibly better since he played the Spears role for SD (Not the playmaking end). I wonder why he wasn’t part of the bidding war for 3-4 DE’s. Only thing I can think of is the ’roids thing.

by JimmyJohnson on Mar 6, 2009 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

Canty is getting the big money because he stays on the field on 3rd downs

Olshansky comes off.

That extra down puts a lot of money in your wallet.

by Rafael Vela on Mar 6, 2009 7:46 PM CST up reply actions

I had no idea.

That doesn’t change my opinion on him but i did not know that. Are you sure you are not confusing him with Luis Castillo? I’m just asking because i remember Castillo tested positive for steroids at the scouting combine. You maybe right though.

by TARHEEL PAUL on Mar 6, 2009 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

Yep, your right, i just googled it and you are correct sir.......

Seems like they have a steroid problem in San Diego. Merriman, Castillo, Igor

by TARHEEL PAUL on Mar 6, 2009 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

I'm looking around...

and I can find articles talking about Merriman and Castillo taking steriods but can’t find a single story linking Igor Olshansky to any steriod use or suspension.

by Luke. on Mar 7, 2009 12:11 AM CST up reply actions

I can't find anything. I think they're getting him mixed up with Castillo.

pick up. Very solid player. I wonder if we will try to make any more FA moves? What S are left? Dexter Jackson??

Now:

Defense:
We are all set with the starters.

Positives: I’m excited to see what Scandrick can do roaming center field delivering knockout shots and maybe some INT’s. I also like the idea that we can stay in our base defense and still matchup with Scandrick in the slot. We don’t have to get KD or RW off the field in passing downs anymore.

Negatives:
1. I’m a little less excited about Jenkins as a starting CB – Like Henry, he doesn’t have the speed to hang with top WR’s. Unlike Henry, I’m afraid he will be a liability in run support.
2. Not sure what kind of SS Hamlin will be. I thought KD was decent last year on 1 good leg. Hopefully we keep him for depth at the position.
3. Ether way, with the loss of at least 3 DB’s (I imagine Watkins is done), we have a serious depth issue.
4. We need to replace Tank with somebody who can give Ratliff a breather at NT.

by JimmyJohnson on Mar 6, 2009 8:05 PM CST reply actions

Jenkins has plenty of speed at CB, shouldn't worry about that

Big upgrade from Henry. Big,big,big

I attended the Cowboy/Cards game...

and Warner stayed away from Jenkins. He never threw his way. I like him in Henry’s place.

I think he ran a 4.38 at the combine last year. Anyone remember exactly?

Cutting TO was dumb but everything else is good move by Jerry.

But even cutting him there could be a benefit in this offense if used correctly. There better be a lot of running plays called now. If we go to a running game, then cutting TO could’ve actually been a good move

by Burt88 on Mar 7, 2009 9:50 AM CST reply actions

Contrast

It looks to me like the Giants are paying a significant premium for Canty’s perceived upside. In a cap world, I prefer this deal.

The only thing that makes me nervous is the Giants are pretty good at judging d-linemen.

(Romo) still gets excited when he buys a new t-shirt at Target for crying out loud

by I_miss_Switzer on Mar 7, 2009 1:10 PM CST reply actions

It just depends..

They are paying a lot of money to find out if he can play DT in their 4-3 scheme. He may turn out to be valued appropriately, but he could be the same or worse since he’s playing in a scheme he hasn’t played in since at least high school.

Even the Giants can’t be sure. I’m sure it will help playing next to the other Pro-Bowl players on their line though…
