Is Ware Worth It?
Is Ware Worth It?
DeMarcus Ware will soon be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL, which leads to the question “Is Ware worth it?” Is DeMarcus Ware deserving of the millions of dollars he will be getting from Jerry Jones? The obvious answer is a BIG YES. However, that doesn’t mean that the average fan can’t play devil’s advocate. Let’s just look at Ware’s qualifications, and if justified, make Ware the highest paid defensive player in history.
A couple of weeks ago Albert Haynesworth set the new standard for defensive players and big contracts. As of now, he’s the highest paid defensive player in history. Should Jerry pay Ware the same amount or more? If you were an owner, would you pay Haynesworth that kind of money? I believe it was 41 or 42 million guaranteed. Haynesworth has been playing at a very high level for two years now; he’s been the most dominant tackle in football, commanding double teams, wreaking havoc in the backfield, and intimidating quarterbacks, offensive lineman, and running backs. Can you make the same case for Ware? YES! Ware commands double teams, harasses quarterbacks and running backs alike, and his speed is intimidating. Ware also covers tight ends and running backs, has a non stop motor, and plays every down. Unlike Haynesworth who has only been playing at this level for two years now, Ware has been playing at this level since 2005. Remember in 2006, when Haynesworth was manhandled by Gurode and Kosier which led to the stomping incident? I don’t think Ware has ever been manhandled like that, he has too much speed. What more can you ask for? If Haynesworth got paid, pay Ware too. Is Ware the best defensive player in football? Not yet, but he’s on the cusp and is still improving. You saw that last year in midseason when he picked up a couple of pass rushing moves. Next year, with this progression, he will be the best defensive player in football, so pay him now.
Injuries are part of the game, but Ware has been injury free since he came into the league. Part of it is luck, part of it is preparation, and part of it is hard work. Ware plays hard every down and that’s one of the ways to avoid injury. Coaches and players always say that people get hurt when they take plays off. Ware never does. If only that work ethic rubbed off on all his teammates.
People like me will never let the Ware, Merriman comparison die. They will be linked together forever because they were drafted consecutively. Some of you will be annoyed that I brought it up again, but you have to admit it’s fun though. Ware is better than Merriman. The comparison might not be fair at this point because Merriman did not play except for a few games last year, but if he did play his sack totals would have totaled or surpassed Ware’s, which would have made the argument much closer. Even if he did play Ware is better. At the end of their careers Merriman might have the better sack totals, but he is not the better player. Merriman is a sack machine, Ware is too, but he can do all of the things I mentioned above. Do you recall when he covered Frank Gore step for step and deflected the ball? Merriman can’t do that.
I believe Ware is worth it. Jerry, make Ware the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. If Haynesworth received $100 million give Ware $101. Ware is just as disruptive as Haynesworth who is generally considered the best defensive player in the NFL. He’s better than his counterpart, Merriman. And like I stated before, he will be the best defensive player in the NFL next year. Jerry, save some money and pay him now. Ware will get paid. The question is “how much?” How much should Ware receive?

If Ware demands the head of a virgin goat, and the liver of a three-toed sloth
Somebody better go get it for him.

Three Toed Sloth?
You mean Jose Canseco, right?

Yeah...
The amazing thing about Ware is he’s a great pass rusher and he’s not bad at ANYTHING.
There are a ton of pass rushers that suck in some other areas but Ware is good at everything and then GREAT at rushing the passer.
He’s a freak of nature.
Dallas makes me act like Christian Bale......
And that's really what separates him from all the other OLB
People like Merriman are superior pass rushers, but not much else.
This guy can do it all.
And on top of that, he’s seems to be 10000000x the person he is a football talent. And that’s saying a lot.
+1
I wear a black armband because on March 5th we cut TO and our 2009 season died.

Last time I almost cried is reading the story about him adopting his daughter and seeing the picture of him w/ her. I have a daughter myself which is most likely why it was such a touching story

I bet
That even though he could get paid way more than Haynesworth he takes less…I’ll put money on it. Only 50 cents of course…but still I’m sure he will take less

Yeah, kudos to the scouting report on this one
I still remember that draft. I’d read up on all of the top OLB’s in the draft that year and hadn’t really paid much attention to Ware. I don’t remember him even getting much play till the combine as far as I can recall. Then out of nowhere he became a top 15 draft pick. This guy played at a small school too so you know the Cowboy’s scouts worked extra hard evaluating this guy to see if he could translate to the NFL. What a great find.

People think Haynesworth is better than Ware?
If so, I officially hate people. All of them. Ware is easily the best defensive player in the league, and possibly the best player in football, period. I really hope he crushes the 22.5 sack record this season. Considering he’s done nothing but improve his production each year, I’d say it’s almost a given he’s going to do it.
Epic Fail since 1985
That is something that doesn't get much play.
The guy improves EVERY year. Doesn’t take a step back ever. He’s already got more than half the sacks Charles Haley had in his whole career in 1/3 the time. He’s really special.

Nice work beautifultyrant
When I saw the title of the fanpost on the right I thought,“Can someone actually be posting this question?” So naturally I had to read it because I thought you had lost your mind.
I didn't read it for awhile cuz of that
I thought the guy went off his rocker only to find a very good post

Most definitely
Ware’s walking around money after the new contract.

Ware’s home vault after the new contract.

I'm waiting for someone to post a pic of the pile of money the Joker torched
in the Dark Knight. lol I love that new vault.
Ware is the Best Player in The NFL
Yeah I said it. I think hes not only the best lb or DE in the game but the best player in the NFL. Now I’m not saying Id rather have him over a Brady Or Peyton Manning but I am saying he’s better than those players at what he does. There isn’t a single aspect of Ware’s job description he could do better. Rush the passer= o yeah, play the run= like its nobodys biz, drop in coverage= probably too good because they have him doing it more than I ‘d like. Lastly he’s got a great attitude and work ethic. I don’t know that I’ve seen anyone consistantly drive tackles backwards like D Ware. Even when he’s not getting sacks he almost always has his way with the o lineman. If you watch some of the other top pass rushers like Joey Porter I see him get eaten up all the time. He doesnt create the push that Ware does nearly as much. Bottum Line. Pay the Man

Ah, AD
He is easily one of the best players in football. I certainly would say he’s in contention to be considered the best player in football, but I still have to go with Ware. AD still needs to get 2000 yards in a season before I can redact the Ware statement. 20 sacks is absolutely absurd. Only been done 6 times, I hear. Tack on the fact that he plays the run just as well, and actually drops back in pass coverage from time to time, and that number gets even MORE absurd. Guy’s a freak.

ware is a blast to watch....
hes always involved 1 way or another, my fav. is when they run away from him and he brings the rb down for a loss….hes a stud..
I don't need a compass to know which way the wind shines....
I'll be completely honest...
I didn’t read a single word on the post. I just saw “Is Ware Worth It?” and came here to post a definitive YES!!! No matter what point you brought up, yes, we NEED D-Ware on our defense and more importantly, we need to NOT face him at any point in a season…

he will be worth every penny. one can’t predict injuries but he is right now one of the top 3 if not the best pass rusher in the NFL. where as harrison had the benefit of the rest of his defense that allowed him to be the terror, Ware is the focal point of our defense. plus they run a much more sophisticated defense than we do, which puts ware in a lot of double team situations where opposition knows he is coming and from where and they still can’t stop him
plus he hasn’t peaked. he is got another three years before he peaks.
Yeah... and a bear wipes his ass with a rabbitt...
Look, the title has alliteration, it got people to read the article, and the arguments were decent. There are other fans besides Cowboys fans that think they have the best defensive player in the league, but the article justified that Ware is. So there.

We were talking about that today
at work. With the guaranteed money D Ware is going to get, approx. 40 million, I think we could have:
signed:
Houshmanzadeh
Bart Scott
Jim Leonhard
Igor
resigned:
Burnett
dropped:
Canty
You’re also going to trade D-Ware this offseason so including all the signings, you’re probably going to pick up 2 #1s and another 2nd or 3rd(It cost us a 1st and 3rd for Roy)
The nerds in the audience would have to tell me if all this matches in terms of guaranteed money and picks. I tried and then got tired head pretty quick
cow_fan..
I’m not a math buff so I won’t even attempt to figure it out.
What people seem to forget is that Ware was not the dominant force at the beginning of the season like he was at the end. I remember whan Rafael wrote a post about when the “light went on” for Ware; he developed a couple of pass rush moves, remember when he abused Walter Jones? It was then he became dominant. If Ware plays next year like he did at the end of the 2008 season, we’ll witness something we never have. So, with all due respect, none of the signings you proposed matter. Just pay Ware.

I don't disagree
But the discusion should be how many positions do you weaken in order to sign the elite, top 2 defensive player in the league. It’s interesting and I’m glad I’m not making the call
