The King's Heir Apparent

I’m usually not a big fan of Fort Worth Star Telegram’s Randy Galloway, but I did find his article on Stephen Jones rather interesting.

What Galloway delved into and expounded on provided more support about what I’ve read about Stephen on the surface. And the older he gets – and the more experience he acquires – the better he’s gonna get in making additional personnel moves in the near and distant future.

Look, we all know how steadfast da King can be when he wants something or is obsessed with something, but these days, I honestly believe that Stephen has become more of a major influence when it comes to the well-being of America’s Team.

Galloway apparently talked to several people to compare the elder and younger Jones:

"The joke is that Jerry was an outsider who wants to be a football guy," said another former Valley Ranch employee. "But Stephen IS a football guy. He grew up in the business of running the Cowboys. What he does within the organization, how many hats he wears, is incredible. He is the port in the storm for the front office. Just a real nice and smart young man who gets it. He really gets it."

Asking around last week, I wanted to hear how Stephen differs from Jerry, personality-wise, on a day-to-day basis at Valley Ranch. A few comments follow:

"Stephen knows Jerry really enjoys being the face of the team, and he’s happy for his father. Jerry has his ego, good and bad. But if Stephen has an ego, I’ve never seen it surface. He’s very well-grounded."

"Stephen realizes his dad’s weak points, but he also understands his dad’s strengths. And more than anything, he worships Jerry."

"Jerry can be hardheaded, to say the least. Stephen is much more open-minded."

"Jerry can handle confrontation, but he’s more of a negotiator. Now, Stephen, you don’t push him. I remember one day when Big Bill [Parcells] was on one of his hell-on-wheels tears. He was telling some staff members to stay out of the training room. When Stephen walked in, Bill told him, 'I don’t want you in the training room, either.’

"Stephen looked hard at him, and said, 'As long as we own this team, I’ll come in here any damn time I please.’ It was the end of that discussion."

Oh no he didn't?!?!  I got your Tuna right here!!!!!

Think Stephen hasn't come into his own?

I’ll venture to say that “The Son” has asserted himself after almost two decades of his apprenticeship. And I’ll add that our Beloved Boyz seem to be in good hands -- even after the King’s reign.

The future is about as bright as the shimmer on the Cowboys' star right now.

I read that article too...

and I loved it. I’m actually hoping this changover happens sooner rather than later. Let’s get the less crazy Jones in charge!

This won't happen until Jerry passes away

Until then Stephen will be Jerry’s right hand man and I agree this organization is in great shape once the team passes over to Stephen after Jerry takes his last breath.

we may already be seeing the transfer of power

I’m guessing Stephen probably played an integral role in TO’s release

Yeah, but that's the one release I'm still a little bit heartbroken over...

Jerry appears to have great respect

for Stephen. He has an ego. The pride he has in his son will allow him to shine in Stephen’s successes. Yes, the changes happening are not just with the team but with Jerry as well. I think a better day is coming for the cowboys.

Was it Stephen that supposedly had some sort of scandel....

with a Country Singer? I kinda forgot the details but didn’t she get pregnant with his child and he wouldn’t acknowledge it? It was about 10 years ago and everyone was talking about what a spoiled brat he was. I may be confusing him with the other brother. Anybody else remember this?

who cares if he is a spolied brat

all I care is how he eventually runs this team after Jerry is gone, whom he impregnates in his private life is none of our concern.

You misunderstood me....

I was asking the question if it was Stephen because a few years ago there were stories about one of the Jones being a goof head and irresponsible. I was wanting clarification that it was Stephen. I was just making a statement and asking a question so please don’t jump on me. I could care less about his personal life. Everything I say is not a debate or creating controversy so don’t take it like that. I’m just commenting

SB, I liked that article a lot

I read it last night and made a fanshot link to it (I know the fanshot gets no love)

I’m glad you made a fanpost out of it.

I think Stephen will be a great GM when the time comes.

then all I have to say is thank you Stephen! You da man!

Really good article

More to be optimistic about. I’m really liking the vast majority of the moves the team has been making recently. I almost completely lost hope after the Dan Reeves fiasco. It’s almost like they’re trying to make up for it and do things right this time. If Stephen really is the voice of reason at Valley Ranch, it’s obvious Jerry’s paying a lot more attention to what he has to say now.

As crazy as I think Jerry can be, I do think he’s classy enough to pass the torch. I don’t think we’ll have to wait long before he gives him the keys to the car, so to speak.

Epic Fail since 1985

that will never happen

and classiness has absolutely nothing to do with it. The Cowboys are Jerry’s toy and he’ll never ever give up that toy, even to his beloved first child.

You have to understand that Jerry has obsessed about owning and running an NFL team since he stopped playing football at Arkansas and he’ll never give that up. The Cowboys are his life. There might come a point in time when Jerry runs the Cowboys as like a partnership with Stephen but you can bet your life that Jerry will always make the final decision on all things Cowboys, just like he did with T.O.

I don't know about that

I get what you are saying and I agree that Jerry will always be in the spotlight but this offseason feels like Stephen is asserting himself more and Jerry is accepting more of his advice.

Jerry loves running a successful NFL team and I think he is man enough to admit that his son may be more of a real “football” guy with more knowledge of running a successful franchise than Jerry himself.

I agree as long as SJ maintains the balance where it looks like JJ is getting the pub then

SJ can maintain his level of influence without a need for the spotlight.

bottom line is Jerry will always have the last say

If he really didn’t want to get rid of T.O., he wouldn’t have released him, no matter how Stephen felt.

The guys on the NFL Network said that Jerry at the combine was asking as many GMs as he could their for advice regarding cutting T.O., so Stephen wasn’t the only anti-T.O. person giving him their opinion.

Don’t kid yourself, Jerry might start to listen to Stephen’s opinions more, but he’ll always have the final say.
