Drafting Solid Backups
I know that this post is pre-draft, but let’s work with our current roster. I took most of the names of the starters and replacements from this website:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/dal/depthchart
ASSUMING that these are our starters for Game 1 2009:
QB – Romo
RB – Barber
FB – Anderson
WR1 – Williams
LT – Adams
LG – Kosier
C – Gurode
RG – Davis
RT – Colombo
TE - Witten
WR2 – Austin (instead of Crayton)
LDE – Spears
NT – Ratliff
RDE – Olshansky
LOLB – Ellis
LILB – James
RILB – Brooking
ROLB – Ware
LCB – Newman
SS – Sensabaugh
FS – Hamlin
RCB - Jenkins
And ASSUMING that these are their primary backups:
QB - Kitna
RB – Choice (instead of Jones)
FB - Crosslin
WR1 – Hurd (instead of Austin)
LT - Free
LG - Proctor
C – Gibbons/Spanos (not listed on the above website)
RG - Holland
RT - McQuistan
TE - Bennett
WR2 – Crayton (instead of Stanback)
LDE - Dixon
NT - Siavii
RDE - Hatcher
LOLB - Spencer
LILB - Stewart
RILB - Carpenter
ROLB - Rogers
LCB - Ball
SS - Watkins
FS - Brown
RCB – Scandrick
Some positions are fairly covered with a backup:
QB - Kitna
RB – Choice
TE – Bennett
WR2 – Crayton
RDE – Hatcher
LOLB – Spencer
RCB - Scandrick
Other positions would be DISASTROUS with an injury to the starter:
Who would we have the most difficulty replacing in the event of a season ending injury to the starter?
Does the answer to that question dictate our draft picks this month?
What’s your opinion?

firstly...
There is no way Hurd is above Crayton on the depth chart. But otherwise I agree, we definitely need some better backups, especially the o-line. We all saw what happened after Koiser went down.

I agree on Crayton above Hurd
I’m sure some guys would be considered the backup at more than one position.
For example: Spencer would probably backup either Ellis or Ware
I'm watching the AZ game from last year while I work from home today and Crayton really looks good.
Sometimes, I forget how valuable he has been to this offense.
Romo’s getting knocked down nearly every play though.

Crayton is very underrated
He doesn’t nearly get the credit he deserves from Cowboys fans, probably due to his lack of blazing speed and his gaffs that had a tremendous impact on the Giants playoff loss.
In Romo we Trust
Though his speed isn't "blazing", he still has some moves.
He was quick enough to zigzag and sprint for a 55 yard TD in the 2nd qtr. Also had a nice fingertip catch earlier.

I think an injury to Flo or Columbo would be the worst thing to happen to us.
I don’t like the idea of an injury to Romo but we’re screwed if Flo gets hurt. I DO NOT want to see Bigg out there at LT. That’s the surest way for our team to go down the drain next year.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.
Do you trust Free?
Would Free cover for Adams? Or do you think Bigg goes to LT and we replace him at RG with Holland?
No, I don't trust Free.
I think they’d move Bigg to LT and I don’t know if Holland would go to RG or if they’d leave him at LG and move Proctor to RG.
I liked Free coming out of college. He has good feet and has the ability to mirror his guy. Better IMO than Flo. I thought all he needed was a year in an NFL strength and conditioning program. Now I’m not sure if he can play football or not. I haven’t seen much of anything and nothing’s coming out of the team about him either. I hope we see a ton of him in pre-season.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.
I would rather trust Free than move Bigg.
Screw it, throw him in there. He’ll prove himself eventually before getting our QB killed. Maybe favor an extra blocker like Hannah over there and run at that side often to slow down that quick DE?

But...
If they draft an interior guy high—like Duke, then I can see them more willing to move Bigg. Lame.

by Aaron Novinger on Apr 1, 2009 11:01 AM CDT up reply actions
Agree with that
I don’t think they will move Bigg out to LT because a) he sucks there, and b) he’s a Pro Bowl RG
I can’t say I trust Free at the moment, but maybe he’s improved enough to be a viable backup to Flo.
Just have to wait until TC and find out.
Feb. 27 -- Veteran free agency signing period begins. Trading period begins.
April 25-26 -- NFL Draft
If we grab Duke..
we just might be willing to move him. He would be better for Right tackle tho and we just signed Columbo to a deal so all he would be able to move is to LT
by nicholas.rodriguez on Apr 1, 2009 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm more scared about Columbo going down, rather than Flo.
Columbo matches so well with Bigg over there on that right side that they really give our offense (along w/Barber) a nasty toughness.
Of course, I can only hope Free would be able to step up for Flo to cover Romo’s backside, because I wouldn’t want Bigg to have to move to LT, creating another hole at RG.

I’d kinda rather Bigg stay at RG and only replace 1 position if Flo goes down – but do I trust Free? Not really!
Free will have alot of eyes on him during TC and Preseason. I can't wait to analyze and scrutinize him!

That's the problem with moving Bigg.
Bigg is a bad LT. If you move him to LT then that creates a weakness at two spots, LT and RG.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.
Just my opinion
Maybe right, maybe wrong – Felix seems more like the 3rd down back, flaring out for swing passes, getting 1 on 1 with OLBs, whereas Choice is more of a GRUNT, workhorse type of runner to be used on 1st and 2nd down, busting through the line of scrimmage and mixing it up with the BIG BOYS up front.
I agree.
Felix will get his touches no matter where on the depth chart or field he is. Choice is probably the most steady back on this squad; whereas Barber offers a whole different dynamic on his own.
Any of these guys can be starters though. That’s awesome.

Cowboys really lack quality depth
which is the biggest reason why they tanked last year. If we can draft some quality backups, we should be okay if we get hit by the injury bug again.
IMO, Felix’s injury hurt us the most because we didn’t have a back to replace his speed in the lineup. As talented as MB3 and Choice are, defenses don’t fear them taking any ball to the house.
Our offense is completely different without the Cat on the field.
In Romo we Trust
T'would be a scary scenario if any of the three went down for an extended amount of time.
I don’t see them bringing anybody else in, do you? Sure, I’ll take a PS guy or a more dynamic FB, but I don’t see them seriously going after a RB unless catastrophe strikes.
George Teague, Brock Marion, the Roy Williams-of-old: Where are you?
by Aaron Novinger on Apr 1, 2009 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions
the problem is you can't carry 4 backs on the roster
and Choice is essentially MB3’s backup, not Felix’s. Maybe we can sign a guy like Larod Stephens-Howling who backed up Lesean McCoy at Pitt after the draft as a FA and stash him on the practice squad. He’s a 4.4 burner who benched 18 reps at 225 at his pro day and for a 180 lbs back, thats pretty impressive. Very similar to Darren Sproles of the Chargers.
In Romo we Trust
That sounds like a plan to me.
No more Alonzo Coleman.

Cornerback.
I am not at all comfortable with that position. There are so many what-ifs.
What if Newman can’t get through a whole year? The games he misses are as much a concern as the games in which he comes back too early.
What if Jenkins and/or Scandrick have a sophomore slump? Both these guys are now integral to the defense.
What if Ball simply can’t “ball”? I heard Mickey talking about how bulked up his is, but we won’t know until preseason how adequate of a cover CB he is.
I really think they need 2 corners in this draft—at least.
George Teague, Brock Marion, the Roy Williams-of-old: Where are you?
Change mine to the DBs in general.
Brown (FS) and Watkins (SS) as the primary backups, there? Ugh. Is it April 25th yet?

I would get rid of one of them (basically the same player anyways) to bring back Polk. I know he isn’t a safety but I like what he brings to ST and he can back up James if something happens to him

With Henry and Pacman gone you have only 3 proven corners (not sure Jenkins is “proven” yet but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt). Losing any one of those guys for any length of time would be bad news. We’ve got to add some depth and hopefully hit on another “Scandrick” type in the middle rounds.
Garrett needs to get a clue!
The only really bad play I saw Jenkins make was that in that stupid Giants game.
In every NFL Replay game I watch, he’s battin’ balls down all over the field and launching at ball carriers. He looks like he’ll be able to man one side of the field for many years for us.

I like his upside
The only game he really got worked was the St.Louis game. Other then that he looked very impressive for a rookie corner. From what I hear he’s in tip top shape right now so I think he’s up to the challenge.
Yup...
but how many very good corners can we have, I’m all for drafting one who could be a steal but we should only draft one high if there isn’t a player rated the same or higher at a different position of need….I wouldn’t mind getting Mickens in the third if he is the BPA

I never understood why
We moved Courtney Brown to FS, he has the size of a corner and blazing speed. We really could have used him at corner.
Brown looks pretty big--enough to play safety. He added bulk has made him lose that lean look you want in a CB.

If Ratliff goes out, mail in the rest of the season. Dallas has NOBODY that can occupy blockers in the middle and our ILB’s would be a serious liability if o-linemen were able to consistently get to the second level.

Well..
Again Wade is really high on Siavii and if didn’t try to squeeze something out of Tank last year than he would’ve been our backup. Wade was shocked that no one picked him up next year so right now I’m sure they think that it isn’t the end of the world if we don’t draft one since he is capable.

Me too on Siavii
I think we need another BIG NT to give Ratliff a breather on short yardage and goal line situations.
Ratliff is great and I could be wrong but I don’t think his size (302 lbs on nfl.com) and style is conducive to short yardage situations where he might have to occupy 2 blockers. If nothing else rotating him with another NT will at least keep Ratliff fresh throughout the game and possibly extend his career by reducing the amount of punishment his body takes.
Hopefully Siavii is ready to be that guy.

Feb. 27 -- Veteran free agency signing period begins. Trading period begins.
April 25-26 -- NFL Draft
We really need some depth help along the o-line. We could probably use another corner which is why I think we should draft someone like McBath or Sean Smith because they can play both corner and safety. Romo going down isn’t as big of a deal as it was last year. I think Kitna could win anywhere from 8-10 games. He’s a quality guy.
+1
I was unsure of picking up Kitna but now I like it. From all the stories he is a class act in the locker room and will help mentor a younger guy if we get one and will do anything he can to ensure Romo succeeds.
by nicholas.rodriguez on Apr 2, 2009 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions
My biggest concerns
on defense would be losing FS, SS or NT to a season ending injury
on offense it would probably be either T spot or Center.
Even if we draft 11 guys (which I don’t think we’ll do) and if we hit on 4 of them as Raf suggested in his post, that still doesn’t sound like enough SOLID backups to me.
But I guess many other NFL teams are in the same boat – no one can have 11 backups on O and D and not lose a beat.
Hopefully, when they extend the length of the regular season they will allot for another roster spot or two to compensate for the increase in injury possibilities.
It would be nice to have 46 active right now, anyways.

What about Sherman Williams?
No, not the paint guy, the RB. He’s not going to suit up again, either. I’m just saying don’t forget him. There is a much discussed notion that the collapse of the 90’s team was brought on by Jerry’s theory that he had starters, so all he needed were some solid backups. No team has that luxury.
It is a violent game. Get the best personnel you can. Otherwise, the status quo is your ceiling, and you’re ill-prepared for the inevitable attrition. I would love to have the embarrassment of riches the Pats have enjoyed: having to pick between Brady and Cassel, then trade the loser for 2 first rounders (market value).
This is a well thought out post, but I can’t agree with the notion that we draft for backups. I think it’s important to understand where every piece of the personnel puzzle fits, but you swing for the fences on every pick you make. If you want a RILB, make damn sure you get one that will beat out Brooking and Barbie.
It's not so much that you're just drafting backups.
It’s more the reality of the situation that no matter who you draft, more than likely they’re going to be a backup right off. You still draft the best players available. Guys who you think have upside or have the capability to start. They’ll start off in backup positions and start scrabbling for a starting job or be able to fill in for an injury. I think Jerry’s problem in that draft you’re talking about is that he REALLY went after only backups. Not guys with potential but guys who were truly never going to be better than backups. Looking at that year’s draft crop it’s hard to imagine a bigger group of scrubs. Although Bjornson had a decent career.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.

Nice thoughts and it's always good to have competition.
But most players going into the 2nd day are going to be looked at as contributors, ST guys, or developmental guys.
And judging by the way the coaches held guys like Felix and Choice back last year, there doesn’t seem to be a huge press to get rookies extended playing time. Maybe last year’s crop will change that thinking.

Montrae Holland,
He played in place of Kosier last year till he himself also was hurt. I thought he was a better fit there over Kosier because of his size and I believe we had a better run game when he did play. He is a solid backup if that is what he’s subjected to but to me I’d let him compete for starting LG. It doesn’t make sense that the O-line goes (from left to right) 340 lbs LT, to 294 lbs LG (Kosier), then back up to 312 lbs. C, 366 lbs. RG, 315 lbs RT. I swear he gets man handled when I see him. Holland is 322 lbs… ( From Larry Allen to that, I never really understood…)
God 1st, Family Always & Dallas Cowboys 4 Life!!!!!
Kosier makes up for his lack of size with grizzly toughness.
I agree that Holland probably will compete with him at LG. Those guys might be asked to pull more with a healthy Felix running counters and stuff, though.

Wrong
I thought he was a better fit there over Kosier because of his size and I believe we had a better run game when he did play.
The running game had the best day of the season in Green Bay with Kosier at Guard and he made 3 or 4 key blocks, with a bad wheel…
He’s “small”, but he’s been our team most consistently good OLineman.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
Inside Linebacker
I’m not a huge Bradie James fan, but if he were to be lost for the season, we would be severely screwed at ILB. Brooking is old an I think he’s a question mark anyway. I heard from a lot of Falcons fans that he lost a step … or three the last few years. Who’s the back-up there? Barbie? Stewart? Do any of those choices make you feel good? Hopefully the draft will provide some depth there.
Bradie James in awesome!
He just keeps getting better every year and doesn’t look to want to slow down.

Bradie is the man. Last season he was irreplaceable. There was no one on the roster that could have filled in for him.

Crayton is smoking crack
If he thinks he’s above Miles Austin in the depth chart. JJ has repeatedly compared Austin as a reason he felt okay letting go of TO, and you don’t let go of a star receiver because a non-starter makes you feel better.

Agree
Austin should be the #2, but I do like Crayton’s attitude, it’s his spot until someone takes it from him.
If everything works out Roy will be the #1 go to guy, Austin will be the deep threat, and Crayton will be the slot WR, where I think he does a very good job of reading the zones and finding the open spots.
Now if he would just stop talking trash….
Feb. 27 -- Veteran free agency signing period begins. Trading period begins.
April 25-26 -- NFL Draft
Agreed, Crayton is much more effective
In the slot, than on the edge. I like the idea of Roy Williams and Austin streaking down the sidelines; Crayton crossing underneath, Witten splitting the deep seem, and Felix waiting for a gimme in the flat. What’s the defense to do?
The entire OL
is a disaster waiting to happen. I personally think that Adams is overrated, but realistically, he would have to win the award of Biggest Disaster Awaiting….
Unlike a Cowboys' season, in life, there may not be a next year.
It's NT or LT pretty easily
Flozell or Ratliff, if either suffers an injury our season is wrecked completely at this point…There isn’t a decent back up at either spot that can handle responsibilities.
Honestly if we had the cap space Jason Peters would be a consideration but it’s not likely.
I’m praying William Beatty falls to #40, that’s the perfect chance to move up because he’s a franchise LT and the talent drops off completely after him.
