Contract??? Who cares?

By this I mean it shouldn't matter what someone is getting paid, they should all have to earn their playing time. Money should always be just a bonus, not a prerequisite for playing time. We have too many players that because they got their money they think they will play no matter what. Well I think Jerry would rather win w/ a big money guy on the bench than to lose w/ one out there.

Star-divide

All this is for is becuase I feel the best way for our team to grow together and to improve together is to have everyone have a little uncertainty about their role. You think Roy Williams will work himself harder if he thinks he won't be able to play. You think Flo will take a play off if he thinks he is expendable. These guys want money and to get money you have to play well, and more importantly they have to play. I would be excited if in mini camps and training camp if every player feels like they have a shot to start. I want to see Romo battle Kitna for the starting QB spot, and for anyone that thinks Romo can't handle it, he can and has proved it. He battled his way into becoming the starter so it shouldn't phase him. With all of our WRs battling for 2 spots then everyone will want extra time making sure Romo and their timing is perfect. With our TEs Witten will win but MartyB will have more motivation to bring out the potential that he has. Our Oline will block better, Our Dline will play harder, Our LBs will train harder and learn more, Our secondary will be more focused.

And if a rookie thinks he has a shot to supplant a veteran they will bust their butts twice as hard just to have a chance and in the long run we will become a better, more focused team. If we have more focus we will drop dumb penalties, and it will help us get to where we all want to be.

What you guys think.

Honestly I think this is a rather unreasistic belief

I agree that in theory everyone might work harder if their job was on the line, but that isnt and will never be the case. It isnt all about contracts, Romo is getting paid more than Kitna because he is a better qb, and there is no way you can realistically have a camp competition between the two. The same goes for Roy Williams, he is our best WR, and is ensured a staarting spot barring injury, not because of his contract, but because of his superior skill level.

This sort of motivation may work for the guys who are only a possibility to make the team, or to make the gameday roster, but it would be illogical to try and motivate the stars of the team in a similar way.

I really just meant to say an open competition...

I am one of the Romo backers and thinks that he will get us a few more trophies. About Roy, the thing is he hasn’t shown the guys in the locker room what he can do yet, he’s only played against a few twice and so they don’t have a full understanding of what he can do. If he wins it fairly then the other guys around will be more willing to listen if he decides to stay true to his word and try to be a leader this year. The main point of the post is that with some uncertainty guys will work harder during practice and workouts…I never want to hear from anyone else that another teams practices harder than mine, ya know.

yeah I get what your saying

and I agree, it would be nice for the COwboys to be the team that trains the hardest in the league

Kitna couldn't beat out Romo

if he played his best and Romo played his worst, simply an unrealistic idea. There are only about 10 qbs on the planet that could realistically challenge Romo and they all happen to be starting qbs for other NFL teams.

I don't know

First Round of Playoffs, 8 seconds left on the clock, 4th down and goal on the 5 yard line..you want Romo throwing to Roy Williams or Kitna. I tell you this Kitna gets him the damn ball. Romo has got a reallly good shot at fumbling the snap or blowing it.

Maybe Kitna can push Romo…

I understand what you are saying…Romo is a superior QB..but Kitna pushing a little helps in so many areas…competition, leadership, teaching ball control. Before you throw out any Kitna stats…tell me the team and talent around him….

Kitna can't push Romo

and everyone knows that, Kitna simply isn’t good enough. Great backup, can do the job for 3 or 4 games, but he’s not one of the best qbs in the game today.

BTW, I’d always want the ball in Romo’s hand at the end of the game no matter what. You talk as though Kitna hasn’t fumbled or threw INTs in his career.

Kitna's not pushing anybody. He's probably a year or two away from having a rag-arm himself.

The stats do matter when Kitna’s averaged 29 turnovers over his last two seasons in Detroit. If it’s an open battle Romo must have lost some fingers on his throwing hand in a freak accident.

I don't want Kitna on the field at all.

If he is, that’s an advantage for the opposing defenses. This isn’t Tennessee.

George Teague, Brock Marion--we need you!

Kitna could probably get us through a 3 or 4 game stretch that BJ couldn’t, however, if he has play a significant portion of the season, we’re done, put a fork in us.

If you're the Lions, okay...

If you’re a team with playoff aspirations, not so much.
