No Love for Cowboys in December
Overall its an easy schedule, but they could not have made December any more challenging with the team set the rules mandate

December schedule could've been a lot worse.
The two toughest games are at home against Philly and the Chargers. The Saints game is in a dome so that keeps us away from nasty December weather and im not afraid of the Skins.

I agree for the most part but
I am not sure if last year’s December schedule looked that tough this time last year. Remember Baltimore was coming off a 5-11 season, Philly was coming off an 8-8 season. And the Cowboys were coming off a 13-3 season. Bottom line: in this rapidly changing, parity-filled league, it may be too early to determine the strength or weakness of the December schedule. I think a better barometer is the number or road games. This year its 3 of 4; last year 2 of 4. Hard to say which is tougher at this point….

good point
but we didn’t know that barber, felix, McBriar, Kosier would miss most of our december games. And Romo and witten weren’t exactly healthy either. We went into battle against the leagues best Ds with a really banged up offense.
The situation is reversed this year. I think we are definitely more complete teams than either of the clubs we’re facing, but if we suffer a few injuries on the defensive side of the ball, we’re gonna struggle to hold down SD and NO.

Anothe Foldo for Romo
With this schedule, Tex can safely assume that Romo will stagger to another 1-3 December, at best. @ NY, vs. SD, @ NO, @ Washington. Deja Vu all over again.

vs PHI
don’t forget that game, record in January is bad also

it may be bad
but hes played a heck of a lot better in january than december
by foyesboys on Apr 14, 2009 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's only off 2 games though that were both lost.
not bad but not good either. Then again, it wasn’t his fault Parcells was too conservative against the Seabirds and idiots like Crayton and Fasano drop touchdown passes in the Giants game. The funny thing is all ESPN talks about is Romo throwing the int at the end or the botched hold and all that.
People forget that special teams and Jacque Reeves screwed bad at critical times against New York. The offense sucked against the Seabirds for most of the game and the defense collapsed late. If Terry Glenn (wow, haven’t talk about him in ages) didn’t fumble or MBIII didn’t get stuffed on that 3rd and 1 near the goal line, then Romo screwing up the hold never would’ve happened.
by Burt88 on Apr 14, 2009 10:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
agreed
we’ve choked on so many levels throughout both games, and the majority of them have nothing to do with Romo.
I actually thought he was pretty good against the giants. He made plays that would’ve been great plays – the perfect pass to fasano and the great job getting away form pressure to make that throw to crayton on the crossing route. Those are the kind of plays we made in the regular season that broke the giants back, but our receivers didn’t get the job done.
by foyesboys on Apr 15, 2009 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
But this past season
Romo was partially guilty and obviously so was everyone else. Romo didn’t have to force it deep against the Ravens and other stuff. The defense gives up at the end of the game. Romo does worse in December but the team doesn’t help him out at all. That offensive line against the Giants was why he was getting squashed
by Burt88 on Apr 15, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i know
i’m talking playoffs, i can’t defend him in some of those december games this year, though I will say that he physically did not look right ot me. His accuracy was just not there after coming back from the hand injury. From the washington game on, he just didn’t have the timing on the slant routes that he usually has, and that in particular really hurt him.
by foyesboys on Apr 15, 2009 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs

I think it could be a fast start again for the Cowboys.
Looking at the our first three road games i think we could easily win all three of them.
@ Tampa, @ Broncos, and @ K.C. We could run that table. The toughest part of the first 5 games are the two home games. Gotta figure we win at least one of those. But who really knows.

by BishopWest on Apr 14, 2009 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
no they don't
you’re confusing their superbowl run with how they normally play. In 2005 I believe, they won the division, didn’t play great in the last 2 or 3 games, and got hammered by carolina in the playoffs. In 2006, they started 6-2, then in part due to a rash of injuries finished 8-8. In 2007, they were hot in the middle of the year, but really did not play great down the strech – they had godawful losses to minnesota and washington and nearly lost to the bills. That team was not playign playoff caliber football in december, but it didn’t matter cause they won all the games they should’ve won in our easy 07 schedule. They did play well in the playoffs though. And last year, thye started off real hot but weren’t the same team in dcember (like our 2007 season).
The Eagles are the only team thats trended upwards in december the last few years – played great in december last year and under garcia, and they won their last 2 in 07.
by foyesboys on Apr 15, 2009 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
you're right

by BishopWest on Apr 15, 2009 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
its understandable
after they won the SB, the giants are essentially given a free ride by the media for all their other late season collapses. Thats just the way it works though. Same with Peyton Manning.

Romo in December...
The Biggest Loser. Romo in January… an even bigger loser.
Unless the best QB never to win a playoff game finds a heart and some courage while partying with John Mayer’s leftovers this spring, the Cowboys are in for their tradition December collapse under the balooning Lorenzen Romo. If its not golf temperature the kid doesn’t even bother to show up, see week 16. Man it Tex pissed. Mr. Jessica Simpson is the antithesis of a gladiator and these December games against quality opponents on the road only exacerbate the problem, the dude is SOFT.

Gotta start at least 3-2,probably 4-1. Only gimme game from week 7 on is Oakland. Seattle will be healthy and GB is dangerous. Hardly any bad teams on the schedule this year.
ESPN thinks this december is really difficult, but i don’t see it. The Chargers and Saints are very similarly imperfect teams imo. Of course if our defense is beat up, those games may be very tough to win.
Jeez. Last 5 weeks, we play eli, rivers, brees, cambell and mcnabb. I know qbs don’t face each other, but Romos definitely going to be strongly judged based on how he plays those games.

Can’t tell that you’re a Cowboys fan.
Yes, it pisses me off that THE TEAM chokes in December, but it’s not accurate to place it all on one player — especially in pro football.
Maybe in basketball when it’s five on five, but not in a game like football where there’s 11 vs 11 on practically every given play.
You’re flat out wrong for posting that, sir.

Where are you coming from Lobsterman?
Where are you heading in from when you go to the Packers/Cowboys game? If flights directly into Green Bay are overpriced (they often are), you can fly into Milwaukee, rent a car and make the drive up to Green Bay in just over two hours. It is a nice drive. Also, hotels often book up real quick in Green Bay (there simply aren’t that many), so look to the city of Appleton – it is just about 30 miles away. I would book your hotel ASAP.
Great call on going to Lambeau. It is literally a pilgrimage for any NFL fan. The only NFL stadium I have been to that can compare is Heinz Field in Pittsburg.
The other good news is that you should be able to wear your Cowboy gear and not worry at all about jerkoff fans picking fights. The people you meet at the game will welcome you and love talking football and having a brat and a few beers with ‘the enemy’.
by Cowboy Louie on Apr 15, 2009 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
unlike Heinz Field
where jerkoff fans love to pick fights with the “enemy”. Cowboys fans usually just get harassed because there are so many of us, but if a Browns or Ravens fan actually comes to Heinz Field in full gear cheering their team, they will be physically attacked, no question about it.

we were overrated
look at our schedule. Most of the teams provided little offensive copetition. The division was at its low point – mcnabb was coming back from injury & the giants hadn’t hit their stride yet. We played the afc east and nfc north – two of the more inept offenses in football.
We had a solid 2 games against teams in the top 10 offensively i think (packers and pats) and got torched in both.
This team was SO much better the last 8 games. Its not there yet (we need safety help), but we were beginning to look like a championhip caliber D.

What's with the DEC SCHEDULE?
Since 1996 we have…
Loss to PHI 6 times in DEC
Loss to NYG 5 times in DEC
Loss to NO 5 times in DEC
This year in DEC/JAN we have 5 games and 3 of them are AWAY
Our AWAY record in DEC/JAN since 1996? We lose 72% of the time on the ROAD
That’s the problem!

Nor 97, 98, etc., etc.

If we judge by last year
Then there’s no way Miami wins the AFC East, Atlanta should’ve sucked (especially with the turmoil), no way does Arizona represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, and so on.
Last year’s (or any previous year) performance does not fortell nor portend anything about this year.

He does have a point with the Eagles.
The ‘06 game ended up deciding the division title and although the ’07 game didn’t end up meaning anything in the way of costing the Cowboys homefield, it could be seen as being a sort of precursor to late season collapses to come these last few Decembers where only one side of the ball showed up to play (although that game was more of a case of a pitiful “couldn’t do a damn thing right” performance by Romo than the offense as a whole failing.)
Let’s not even get into last year’s season-ending total disgrace.
The Giants stat is definitely misleading though if not worthless altogether. The only one of those whopping 5 December losses that came in the last 4 years was in ’05 with old mother Bledsoe at the helm. Actually, although the games occurred in late November, the Cowboys actually won key late season games in the deceased Giants Stadium in ’06 and ’07.
The record against New Orleans is also as easily dismissed because the two teams have only played once in the last four seasons. However, I do think the Saints will be a very formidable foe just because of their high-powered offense and the fact that as Romo’s mentor, Payton has the same kind of unique understanding of Romo that gives him an edge in gameplanning against Romo the way Gruden understood how to fluster Rich Gannon.
by MadMick on Apr 16, 2009 3:25 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
while i get your point
chances are good that we play division teams in december. Considering how bad we were throughout 99-04, its not overly shocking that we racked up losses to division foes.
The Eagles are the only team i feel “owns us” in december. Ok, maybe new orleans too, but most of the players on this team didn’t experience most of the losses to NO.

Romo has played in FOUR different Mon Night games
HERE ARE THE STATS
1) 2006 Oct 23, Monday Night – LOSS
Score: NYG (36) @ DAL (22)
Romo only played the 2nd half, however, he had twice as many passing attempts at Bledsoe, who played the first half, and only 1 less pass attempts than Eli Manning, who played the entire game. When Romo entered the game the NYG’s were up 12 to 7, (down by 5), but by the end of the game we loss by 14. In my earlier post, I credit this loss to Romo (you many differ if you wish).
Monday night record at this point: 0 wins, 1 loss
2) 2006 DEC 25, Monday Night – LOSS
Score: PHI (23) @ DAL (7)
Romo was the only QB to throw a pass for DAL in this game. He was 14 of 29, with 1 TD and 2 INTs. His QB rating for the game was a measley 45.5.
After this game, Romo’s Monday night win/loss stats would be: 0 wins, 2 losses.
3) 2007 OCT 8, Monday Night – WIN
Score: DAL (25) @ BUF (24)
Romo was the only QB to throw a pass for DAL in this game. He actually threw the ball 50 times and completed 29 of them. He had 2 TD passes, but 5 INTs, which put his rating at a paultry 49.9.
Romo’s Monday night win/loss stats at this point is 1 win, 2 losses.
4) 2008 SEP 15, Monday Night – WIN
Score: PHI (37) @ DAL (41)
Romo was the only QB to throw a pass for DAL in this game. He was 21 of 30, with 3 TDs and 1 INT. He game rating was an excellent 123.2.
This win on a Monday Night gives him a career Monday night record of 2 wins, 2 losses.
Even if you only give Romo half the credit for the first loss, his record would be 2 wins, 1.5 losses.
In his brief NFL history, his Monday Night record is worse than his Sunday Night, Saturday or Thursday records.
I agree that a lot of different factors go into stats, and some folks can turn and twist stats to make them prove whatever they want to prove. However, some stats are vital, and can certainly help us to learn from the mistakes of the past. Just because we loss a certain number of games on a certain of the week doesn’t mean that it will always be that in the future. I understand that. But some teams to play better in domes or worse on grass. Some play better at night, some worse by day. Some play better in heat, and worse in the cold. Most play better at home than they do on the road. Personally, I think it is worth it to look at all of those kinds of stats. Maybe you don’t agree. That’s OK.
by BishopWest on Apr 16, 2009 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Aaaah ok
Sorry about that, that loss to philly for some reason isn’t categorized as a monday night football game.
I think it was actually under the Sunday Night Football banner… strange.
One way or another I don’t think that the day of the week should be that concerning.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
by AirforceBat on Apr 16, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If there is a concern about the day of the week
I think it would have more to do with the change of routine.
Preparing for the game in less days or more days. For example, some teams play better after a bye, and some don’t. Some playoff teams play better if they don’t get a first round bye at all.
Some teams play better in the late (4 PM) games and some the early games.
I think that a GOOD COACHING STAFF we help the team to remain focused regardless of the change of routine.
Right after the 2009 Schedule came out this year, the coaches that were interviewed said that the first thing they look at, is to see how many 1 PM games they have, and how they will need to adjust their routine for the odd-time games, ie. Monday, Saturday, etc.
Some players seem to play better on primetime TV, and others just freak out and play their worse game ever.
I think certain stats, like Monday games or Saturday games, are factored into betting lines from Vegas. Those kind of schedule changes do matter.
by BishopWest on Apr 16, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I gotcha.
I just think that if overall days that weren’t Sundays he was aweful, that would be somewhat of a trend.
But 8-11 of the games that aren’t in you’re normal routine you win.. then that’s really nothing that irregular.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

Schedule can go one of many ways at this point
If Dallas improves where they need to, they could return to their 07 form. If they stay roughly the same, it’s going to be a long season.
But some of the teams most people are assuming to be pushovers won’t be, and the same goes for teams that were hot last year. Maybe Atlanta’s the next Cleveland, Maybe teams like Carolina, San Diego, New Orleans, etc. get worse, or don’t improve enough to compete? It’s a toss up.But on paper, December/January looks really rough.
I’m pretty sure the NFC East remains brutal. I think Philly lost more than they gained, so until proven otherwise, they’re not as good. Washington looks like they could go either way. NY looks pretty intimidating.
All in all, I don’t see us doing worse than last season.
