The Valley Ranch Review: The Cowboys Need Depth at Cornerback

The Star Telegram breaks down the Cowboys' need at cornerback. Although second-year pros Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick will be counted on, the position will have to be addressed come training camp.
Terence Newman is the only proven player at the position. But the Cowboys like the potential of Jenkins and Scandrick. Scandrick, a fifth-round pick in 2008, had a better rookie season than Jenkins, who was a first-rounder. However, Jenkins will be given every opportunity to develop his first-round talent. Scandrick will see the field no matter what, either as a starter on the outside or as a nickel corner over the slot receiver. Ball is in his third year and still is an unknown commodity while little is expected of Hawkins, an Arena League holdover.
You can see what Orlando Scandrick had to say on a variety of subjects in this BTB article from last night.

Nick Eatman is going with a Duck in his mock draft. He has the Cowboys picking Oregon center, Max Unger, at #51. Check out the rest of Eatman's picks.

Another Oregon player the Cowboys may have interest in is safety Patrick Chung. Rich Gosselin discusses Chung's versatility, "having played both free and strong safety in his college career".

Florida Gator running back Percy Harvin looks to be off the Cowboys' draft board.

DMN's draft series analyzes linebackers. Recently, they covered LSU's Darry Beckwith.

John Madden is retiring
Chris Collinsworth to take his place – I like Collinsworth’s broadcasting

Just read that.
Boy, football will sure be different w/o him. I guess we could see this coming last year when he didn’t go on that one cross-country trip.

I'm really saddened by that news
Madden was the best, those SNF games won’t be the same without him.

Cornerback is not a huge need...
I see them drafting one, but not until day 2. Maybe the 4th or 5th rounds.

Max Unger looks like a good pick because he can compete at other spots on the Oline
but why is everybody always hot to replace 3 time probowler Andre Gurode? And Nick Eatman suggest moving him back to Guard, where he played his 1st 3 years in the NFL. He was lousy at guard! why does everyone forget that?

I agree, if he's there you have to take him

Nick Eatman should stick to reporting the facts because when he does opinion pieces
he is hopelessly clueless. We would be lucky to get Brinkley in the 4th, let alone the 6th! And center as our first pick!? When would he ever see the field playing behind Gurode?
His whole mock are players that will never make it to those picks. Awful.

Eatman also wanted us to trade most of our picks to get McFadden last year
the guy has no clue what he is talking about. Think how much worse our draft would have been.

yeah, OL with the 2nd pick is unlikely anyway..Center or otherwise...
We should stay away from drafting OL early period, because we have no luck.
by Boyzfan94 on Apr 16, 2009 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
Mack, Under and Wood are all studs and will be very good OL for a long time. If anyone of those guys are there, you have to take them. They all can play any OL position as well.

Yeah, really.
Brinkley in the 6th blew my mind. I also highly doubt Unger would even make it down to 51.

I thank God everyday i wasnt born a Eagles fan!!!!!!

How long will this go on?
Having to address the secondary, I mean. You would like to think that after locking up T-New long term, spending a 1st rounder on Jenkins last year, stealing Scandrick, extending Hamlin, and signing Sensabaugh we should be finally be close to addressing the secondary for at least a couple of years. Yes, we need to pick and groom a young stud safety, but after that, let’s hope we can all stop the hand-wringing over these positions for at least a year and focus on something else.

It's tough these days in a pass happy NFL
It’s becoming like the OL where you can never have too many and almost have to evaluate the positions every year now that you need to go 3 deep with quality CB’s.

Drafting a Center in the 2nd round
It would not be that bad a pick except we need bigger linemen. 299 lbs is a little light.. I dont think this kid would be any better than Proctor who seemed too get put on his behind every other play. We need maulers on the o-line, i feel we get pushed around too often up front.

are you kidding me??
Mack, Under and Wood are elite prospects, if any of them are there at 51, you have to take them. They are light years better than Proctor.

I'm pretty sure that the chances of Wood falling to 51 are pretty high
I like him a lot, I just don’t think it would be shocking to see him sitting there and the Cowboys not draft him.

John Mdden
John Madden is a legend on this side of the pond. He is the reason a lot of us are fans of the game. He also explained the game in a way that all could understand. I think he had soft spot for the Cowboys by the way he spoke in commentaries. I cannot believe however that they are giving the gig to Collingsworth! Big mistake.

+1
I don’t think Madden ever had a bad thing to say about a Cowboy and Collinsworth does suck.

I will miss big John.

Collinsworth??
The guy couldn’t cut it on Fox and NFL network. Now, they give him the primetime gig? Unbelievable!?!?!?!?

Collinsworth...
Isn’t that bad. I actually think he’s one of the smarter analysts out there. Just because he says things you don’t want to hear sometimes doesn’t make him a bad announcer.
Everybody LOVED him when on Sunday Night in America he said Jason Witten was the best tight end in football.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

As an analyst he's good
But his likability factor…not so much. He tends to grate on my nerves after a while. JMO
It’s just going to take some time to adjust to not hearing Madden partnered with Al Michaels.

I understand nobody is expecting much from him...
But do some research on Michael Hawkins, he’s a heck of a talent to have and could develop into something…He’s 6’2, runs a legit 4.2 40 yard dash, was the #1 rated DB in the state of Texas in 2002, made a freshman impact at OU like no other freshman DB has in quite some time, and made the Dallas Desperadoes without much effort.
It’s easy to over look these guys, but while were looking at safety depth Abram Elam is making plays with the Jets…I don’t want to rely on Hawkins for depth certainly, but I think we can have something in a year, his only problem has been bulking up and staying healthy.
Just keep your eye on him in pre-season, he’s got some of the best hips you’ll see for a DB.

Nobody picked up elam this year, he was given one of the lowest tenders by the jets and
if he was picked up it would not have required any compensation to the jets.
