The Valley Ranch Review: Cowboys, Miles Austin looking at multi-year deal

The Dallas Cowboys and Miles Austin are trying to work out a multi-year deal before, or even after, he signs his tender.
The wild card is Austin, who is in the process of negotiating a multiyear contract extension with the Cowboys. Austin could wait until the two sides come to an agreement on an extension or he could sign the tender and continue negotiating the extension.

The football world is saddened by the announced retirement of John Madden. Jerry Jones spoke about Madden's influence on the game.
"I don't know that I've ever met anyone who loves the NFL, or cares about the NFL, more than John Madden. As a friend, I know that John's respect and passion for the sport will be the two elements of his legacy that matter the most to him," Jones said. "His imprint and impact on our game were powerful and meaningful. His influence on the sport was felt by everyone-the guys in the equipment room, the players, the coaches, the owners, and most importantly, the fans. He's going out on top-as the best we have-and the best we have ever had."
Hat tip to Johnny Cage for the Fanshot.

Jerry Jones met with Houston OT Sebastian Vollmer on Wednesday night.
On Thursday, Ohio State wide receiver Brian Robiskie visited Valley Ranch. He just might be available when Dallas picks at 51.

Todd Archer sees a need for the Cowboys to bring in pass rushers during this year's draft.

Boldin to the Eagles? Braylon to the Giants? Vice Versa? Eli Manning seems to think that the Giants' management will pursue a trade for a #1 receiver.
"They know we have some good receivers here, some young guys who can play football for us, but that we might need a No. 1 receiver. So I think that's what they're going to look for right now and I'm sure something will happen either during the draft or before the draft or right near it to help us out."

procter is a good drummer, very solid, and ironic
their myspace is decent but these guys have to lay off the affliction shirts a little. the best decision they made was to get a slamming guitarist.

Why the F would they sign Austin to a multi year deal
when they don’t even know if he can stay on the field all year and/or produce at a high level?
Let’s see what he does this year and then talk extension.

+10000000000000000 Bilito !!! ............................................. WHEN will Jerry LEARN ???
You do not sign RFA to long term multi year deals BEFORE they ever even prove anything..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EVEN if Austin plays this season on a RFA tender offer, he would STILL be a RFA next season, having not played 6 seasons in the league, and with the CBA not being extended, it automatically keeps him as a Restricted Free Agent…….
Jerry did it with Crayton, with Barber, etc. etc……LET Austin PROVE he is worthy of a multi- million dollar contract, they have absolutely nothing to lose…This is STUPID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF he blows it up???…..lmao….Prove it……IF he blows up….good, then we’ll know he’s worth the money……UNTIL then, he’s just a street free agent with 18 receptions amassed over three years…..FOOLISH
by My_2_Cents on Apr 17, 2009 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually it's smart thinking......
Because if he blows up this season his price tag will be MUCH more this time next year… 5 to 7 mil more maybe…
I’m sure Jerry is looking to sign Austin to a 2-3 year deal for about 2.5 to 3.5 mil a year. I think Crayton is getting over 2 mil right now as a #3 WR.

Ya its smart
and i bet its incentive based so the better he does the more he will make that way if he is a bust he doesnt lose to much.
I thank God everyday i wasnt born a Eagles fan!!!!!!

somebody correct me here if I am wrong please
But I THINK that if he is a bust, and we release him next year, with next year being an uncapped year, we could eat all the wasted money then.
Right or wrong????
I love me some T.O....I ain't skeerd!!!!!

Yes. With the uncapped year all of it will be charged off at one time. Kind of like this year.
Until this year, you have been able to cut players and spread out the cap hit, but with this being the last year of the CBA, you cant do that.

Aikman over Mandarich... Great article
Off topic. Please forgive. With the draft approaching and the talk of boom and bust, this link is to a good article on Tony Mandarich. I completely forgot that he was taken second overall beyond Troy in 1989. The article recounts how many expert thought the Cowboys foolish for passing on him. If we would have screwed that up, it would have been right up there with drafting Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan.

I've never seen the point of playing that what if game
Football is not basketball. One player doesn’t take over the sport like michael jordan. Players just don’t succeed on talent alone at the qb spot. Most 1st round qbs enter the league with plenty of talent, but its the coaching and organization around them that make them successful at the nfl level. There are exceptions to this – Peyton Manning would probably be successful anywhere. Ryan Leaf would probably be one of hte biggest busts of all time regardless of where he went. But guys like Brady, Romo, Eli, Cambell, Brees, and the many qb failures because their team started them too early…I think they’re upbringing had a lot to do with their current status in the league.
If some other team takes Aikman, I don’t think he necessarily becomes a great qb.

I think even if Austin doesn't do well he won't be cut...
The uncapped year is interesting because I think Jerry is going to wait longer than people think before resigning Ware. There is no rush and considering next year could be a uncapped year it may benefit Jerry waiting. Jerry may see where the negotiations go whether, good or bad then wait until mid season or so to give Ware an extension. Worst case scenario, Ware get’s franchised next year. I want Ware locked up like anyone else, but there is no rush. Jerry has to be smart….

If Jerry Jones waits for an uncapped year to sign Ware
Ware’s contract will be bigger than Alex Rodriguez’s. I believe Ware will have a new contract going in to this season

No Bueno
The Philadelphia Eagles have worked out an agreement in principle to acquire Buffalo Bills left tackle Jason Peters, according to multiple sources.
Andy Reid talks with Scott Hanson about the Eagles’ new additions and expectations for the coming season.
For Peters, the Bills will receive a first-round pick (the 28th selection in the round), a fourth-rounder in next weekend’s draft and an undisclosed pick in 2010, according to a source.

Does anyone know anything about Peters?
I don’t know whether to be happy that Philly is being forced to give up its 1st, a 4th, a conditional and having to potentially pay him big bucks, or bummed because they potentially addressed their left tackle position with a stud for years. Aside from being undrafted, anyone heard anything about this guy?
by Boundforbeach on Apr 17, 2009 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
but no matter how much of a stud he is
1. Mcnabb is getting old and very injury prone
2. Can Kolb get it done?
3. Westbrook’s tank is running low
4. Can booker get it done?
5. Still dont have that superstar WR.
last but not least
Ware will make him wish he stayed in Buffalo

they needed their defense to show up to stop the Cardinals
or maybe a last minute scoring drive — thats how Pittsburg won. Philly was real close to being in the Superbowl.

Rafael had this comment on a different thread on Peters
Jason Peters didn’t show up last year partly because of a contract dispute.
But he was excellent in ‘07, he’s young and if you put him on a winning team with a good
OL coach, chances are very good the old Peters comes back.
And the ’07 Peters would solidify the Eagles blind side for a long time.

Meh...
No one wants to face Ware twice a year… and their line doesn’t play that big since they have been one of the worst in short yardage runs… and they are pretty bad at the goalline as well. I don’t care about their size

My opinion is
They don’t gain much over Tra Thomas’ play, but he does solidify the line for years to come.
by foyesboys on Apr 17, 2009 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He was a stud in '07
and held out last year, then played like crap because of the contract
dispute.
The Eagles found their replacement for Tra Thomas. It’s going to be fun
watching this guy duel Ware, cause they’re gonna do it for a long time.

Peters is suddenly going to have to deal with the cowboys and giants dlines/lbers
which are much harsher than anything he saw in the afc east. I’m not convinced hes the real deal – he didn’t really have much competition in 07.
In 07, the onyl teams they played that had anything resembling a pass rush were dallas (Ware had 1.5 sacks, FF and deflection leading to newmans’ int), giants (umenyiora had a sack), ravens (suggs 1 sack) , and then the steelers lbs comibed for 4 sacks and a FF, so even though its tough to say who they got them on, peters probably let up at least one of them.
This year philly has Carolina, Dallas twice, New York twice, San diego (don’t know about merriman), atlanta and chicago. And NO’s rushers aren’t bad. I think peters is gonna be in for a much tougher year than in 07.

+1 stop....that's the key....They are no longer in the Braylon Edwards/Anquan Boldin discussions.....UNLESS
they want to give up their OTHER 1st rounder/3rd rounder, and pay out 50+ million to a WR as well…
by My_2_Cents on Apr 17, 2009 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
A couple of thoughts ...
I hate the idea of taking Robiskie at #51. He’s not a bad player, but he’s not a playmaker either. We have much bigger needs at #51 than a #3 WR. The only way I would consider one there if if one 1st round rated WRs fell. (It happened last year …)
Miles Austin is not worth $2.5 – $3M per year. He’s already been offered a 1 yr deal for $1.5M. Let’s try and 3 yr – $6M deal.
Jason Peters was one of the best Left Tackles in the game in 2007. In 2008, he was closer to the worst. He allowed 11.5 sacks in 13 games. That’s awful. It depends which Jason Peters the Eagles are getting. If its the one from 2007, we should be worried. If its the one from 2008, DeMarcus Ware should be licking his chops.
by TCBinNYC on Apr 17, 2009 3:37 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
A serious question, not sarcasm
How can a left tackle who gives up 11.5 sacks in 13 games be labeled “the best LT in the game” (as I heard on NFL Radio earlier)??? Isn’t that like saying a QB who throws 30 picks in a season is the best?
I don’t know what a good comparison is, but that’s just plain awful.
by Johnny Cage on Apr 17, 2009 3:56 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think where that comes from ...
is in his run blocking. Peters is huge (6-5, 360 or so) and is a great run blocker. He does struggle in pass protection. And keep in mind Philly is a passing team. As I mentioned, he was also much more effective in 2007 than in 2008. He made the Pro Bowl last year on reputation alone (like Flozell has done at times.) He held out of camp last year and showed up out of shape, which probably led to his horrible season. I wouldnt be surprised to see him get a huge contract, have a great year, and then fall off again.
by TCBinNYC on Apr 17, 2009 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
look at his '07
when he probably was the best LT in the AFC. Last year he was moping. He’s got his money,
a good OL coach and is on a much better team than Buffalo.
I think it’s a very good move for Philly. They were not going to get a LT of his caliber with the 28th pick.
by Rafael Vela on Apr 17, 2009 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Philly has two number 1's too
HAD them anyway.
They still have 1, and they got their LT for the next decade, though it will cost them.
I still wouldn’t panic. They didnt blow the CS game (their 4th blown CS) for want of a LT. They still have their “issues.” They just got better though.
by THEjarhead on Apr 17, 2009 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree the move is smart
but disgregarding age, I wouldn’t think twice about taking flo (A guy whose proven he can shut down the very best pass rushers in the game) over peters. I think hes vastly overrated. Hes a young solid LT yes, and frankly that makes him worth a 1st and 4th imo, but hes had 1 quality year and in that year he didn’t fare great against the league’s better pass rushers

I have high hopes for Austin but Jerry needs to stop paying for potential. Austin could be awesome next season or he could flame out and we don’t need more guys like that signed to long term deals.

if its a 2-3 year incentive based contract
I don’t think it would hurt us too much.
What if Austin has a great year? we’d be looking at a situation where if there is a cap, we probably can’t resign him.
I can see both sides to this argument
by foyesboys on Apr 17, 2009 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
What IF's ??? usually leave you broke in the stock market...
incentive laden contracts ?? unheard of unless your a criminal…IF there’s a cap, and he does well – we tender him another RFA contract is all (there will be NO cap next year, etched in stone, and all of this years RFA REMAIN RFA’s next season)….slap a 1st round tender on him, or sign him long term…AFTER he PROVES himself…….IF he does well… sign him to the money he deserves for having a break out season….along with releasing Crayton & Hurd, and grooming some fresh, inexpensive reserves.. to make room for our new #2 in Austin to shine………
by My_2_Cents on Apr 17, 2009 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Locking him up to a multi year deal, no matter how it’s written, doesn’t make sense. If he truly blows up (which only has a small chance of happening with the offense moving to a 2 TE base with more even run/pass ratios) then worry about the multi year deal. I’m picturing him establishing himself as our #2 WR, but doubt we’ll see gaudy numbers. I don’t really understand the “multi year” angle reported. Too soon Jerry.
