Choose Choice... Commodity or Luxury
My friend came up to me today asking me if he thought the Cowboys could possibly use the play of Tashard Choice's December to dangle in front of the Cardinals and a second and some later picks for Anquan. My initial thoughts on the matter were wow Anquan and Roy Williams with Austin going deep not too shaby!
Yet I sat on the matter and realized that Choice, is a very valuable player on our team and I am very impressed with Choice's work ethic and skill set. Not to mention he is the only running back on our team that I think can carry a full workload. Felix and Marion have not shown they can play the entire game yet, so the importance of Choice is that he might be the only player on our team that eventually turns out to fill that top spot on the depth chart in the end.
Your starting running back, in my opinion, needs to be a work horse and find some rhythm. Felix and Marion both have their roles to play, but should not be starting. Barber is a Closer and Felix is more of a third down back or explosive sweep player. Barber is so physical he needs to run the defenses into the dirt when they are a tired, he is not as effective when the defense is rested. Choice needs to be our starter and is more valuable to our offense than a Wr in my opinion.
Choice could end up giving us 12-15 touches a game if not more this next year, and this will always be more than a wr even if it is Anquan. Choice is the Choice for starter in my opinion and nobody should be surprised if he ends up on top of the depth chart this upcoming year!!!!

No to Bolden
We need no more WR dramas or divas. Choice will do whatever is asked of him and hopefully become the starter at some point this season or next. I think he will be happy to just play.

will everyone get off the Boldin kick already!!
There is no way the Cowboys are going to pay 2 receivers 9 or 10 mil a piece, not going to happen, so just forget about Boldin, this isn’t fantasy football for crying out loud.

Choice won't start over Barber
just don’t see that happening. Choice is great, and Barber had so-so season at best, but I just can’t see it happening. Barber still has a lot to offer. He may come in as a change of pace if Barber can’t get it done, or simply to spell Barber, but I don’t see him cutting into Marion or Felix’s carries. Those guys are just too good to be limited in order to get the 3rd running back involved.
And absolutely no to Boldin. If we didn’t have Roy here, making roughly 9 million a year I’d be all for it, but that’s obviously not the case. I like what Roy has to offer, and Miles Austin deserves a shot at the #2 spot. Boldin in Dallas would automatically ruffle Roy and Austin’s feathers, and rightfully so.

Barber has not shown he can be the starter
Choice has already proved it against the best defenses in the league

Wow....
Really?
Because Barber didn’t have over 100 against the Giants a couple of years ago in a playoff game?
That’s horrible logic.

Well lets break it down for u then
He started 13 games whether or not he was injured I dont care because that tells us he is a better injured option than Choice.
He averaged 17.9 attempts in this time period so he is getting carries.
He totaled 872 yards this is 67 yards a game
And 3.74 yards a game
Choice on the other Hand went against the Best Defenses in the League and easily outotaled these numbers

It doesn't matter who starts really
I like the plan that has been bounced around on this blog.
Alternate MB3 and Choice splitting touches with Felix in the first half. Then go heavy with MB3 in the second half, still getting Felix touches.
Estimated:
1st Half touches= MB3 30%, Choice 30%, Felix 40%
2nd Half touches= MB3 50%, Choice10%, Felix 40%

Weve only seen felix a few games
Who says he deserves to get 40% of the touches???? If your basing it on that its dumb i think let them “all” battle for the starting spot and that will just push the other 2 to become better. I also think just because Marion is making 7 mil a year he shouldnt be handed the starting spot. Hes the closer and is better suited at closing a game out.

I guess that was directed at me
I don’t appreciate being labeled as dumb! Very childish on your part.!
I think Felix is a threat to break off large chunks of yardage any time he touches the ball. The more he gets chances, the more he forces defenses to game plan against him and opens up more opportunities for the other weapons.
There was a reason he was drafted in the 1st round. Check his college career and the fact that he was everything the Cowboys were hoping for before the injury. I think what helps the team is the most important factor, so you can cry about him averaging 40% of the touches all you want, but that was the plan going into last years draft. Split time between MB3 and Felix. Choice was a lucky pick and he can help keep MB3 fresh for the 2nd half, and hopefully injury free down the stretch run of the season.

Huh????
If your basing it on that its dumb
When did i say your dumb??? You said a few games doesnt prove anything but want to give felix 40% of the carries off of just a few games you saw of him last year. So maybe you are dumb if you wanna call me childish for something i didnt say.

Are you responding to 2 people in one comment?
I never said any such thing about Felix.
You are the one who said giving Felix 40% of the touches was dumb.
Maybe we are having some miscommunication here.
If you aren’t calling me dumb, then I apologize for calling you childish.
But I am still confused about your original point.

lol....great reading material....huh ?
First off….IF Felix Jones doesn’t get near 40% of the playing time at HB…The Red Headed Carrot Stick is the DUMB ONE. and should be immediately replaced by any coach off the street that can run an offense, and realizes you use your “best” weapons as much as possible….Andy Reid is perceived an offensive genius or guru because of his extensive and creative use of “Brian Westbrook” ………
split the other 60% or so up with sloath-like Barber, and the rising star Choice…

I dont think its dumb
I just dont see why people say choice isnt any good and his games last year dont show what kind of back he will be. When we only saw felix play a few games also. Felix is the most versital back of them all and is a 1rst round pick so obviously hes got the most potential of all of them.

I agree about Choice...so much so that I would trade MBIII just to get Choice on the field more..
expect that to happen after this season…

I think Choice should start over barber
He should be the 3rd and 1 back and the 2nd half back and Felix can be used anywere and anytime so it makes sense to start choice.

I can see him cutting into barber's carries
but 12-15 is a little extreme. maybe 5-7.

I think we will be a lot more run oriented this year
I am just saying I think sometime this year we will see Choice take over the starting role
by rioplayer7 on Apr 20, 2009 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
thats not going to happen either
as Jerry is not paying MB3 7 mil a year for a closer role.

It should not matter how much you pay someone it should matter how they play
Choice is the better starting running back we saw that against the strongest teams in the league last year

As long as hes getting ten + td’s a year and getting those third and shorts and those goaline touchdowns

Choice will not start for the Cowboys
unless, 1) MB3 gets hurt or 2) MB3 is no longer on the team.
Believe me, I love Tashard as much as anyone, but reality is reality.

Choice
played 3 games and people think he’s Emmitt Smith. Get real. Barber and Jones will be one of the best running back tandems in the league this year, book it.

Wow, you guys really want to run Barber off.
The man got hurt. If he doesn’t get hurt he runs for 1100 yards and we’re not having this conversation. Choice comes in on fresh legs in Week 12 or 13, plays well down the stretch and now he’s Emmitt.
I’m glad Choice is here, but he is the third option. Barber is the best all around back, Felix is the most special. And Choice is just pretty good.

Even Before his Injury he was struggling
No one compared Choice to Emmitt, he is simply the best work horse back there is no debate about it he did it in college, and he showed us in his role against the best defenses in the league. Felix and Barber can not carry a full load. I am not writing them off but it already is apparent that Barber can not start.
by rioplayer7 on Apr 21, 2009 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
writing them off ??
Felix Jones is the best RB to reside in Dallas since Emmitt, and will one day be in the ring of honor…..just wait and see…we haven’t seen nothing yet..
I do agree that Choice should be a bigger part of the game plan though…….
by My_2_Cents on Apr 21, 2009 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am not writing them off i said just think that Choice is the best suited nfl running back
the other two seem to be more fitted for situational downs or quarters

btw...I would trade MBIII before I'd get rid of Choice...
MBIII and a 3rd for WR-Boldin ….I’m in…
by My_2_Cents on Apr 21, 2009 7:26 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Choice is only 3rd on the depth chart because of lack of seniority(or salary) and high draft pick status.
That’s my feeling anyways. The guy is definitely capable of being a consistent 1,000-yard back. His games against the Steelers and Ravens were no fluke. Having solid games against those defenses is night and day when compared to JuJo running all over a sorry 26th-rated Seahawks defense in his rookie season.
Now………
Is Barber a 1,000-yard back? How can anyone be certain? After all, he only needed 19 yards to get to 1,000 in the ’07 season finale and which direction did he go? Backwards away from 1,000.
Also, it’s equally important to start the game with your most steady hand running the ball as it is to be able to get the hot hand the ball at crucial points during the game. Obviously, Felix should get 12-15 touches period; eventually 15-20. You’re denying yourself big plays otherwise. Assuming you give Felix 8-10 rushes a game, that leaves roughly 18-22 carries left to split between Barber and Choice.
Mathematically, it’s going to be difficult (well, almost impossible) to give any one guy 15-20 carries without freezing one of the other two guys out; unless there are plenty of those ideal situations where the Cowboys actually have a sizeable lead in the 4th quarter.
What has already been said multiple times is true. Realistically, Choice is 3rd on the depth chart and will stay there for the time being. You know what else? Barber’s still a damn good back. However, if he’s sluggish out the gate or just isn’t proving to be an effective runner early in games, surely Choice will get his shot and if he’s as good as we think his role will expand significantly.
I don’t see the huge dilemma. Barber is a highly effective back no matter how ill-advised it might seem now to have overpaid him. If Choice seems to be a better option, surely Das Wunderkind won’t be foolish enough to under-utilize him or Felix again this season.
by MadMick on Apr 21, 2009 11:10 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Why is Choise definitely capable of being a 1000 yard back while Barber isnt?
Choice played well, but only for four games. His future is far from certain imo.
