The Valley Ranch Review: For now, the Cowboys are Loaded at RB

The Cowboys definitely look to be loaded at running back for '09. That doesn't mean a part of their talented trio will be trade bait come this draft weekend, does it?

The Star-Telegram's  Clarence Hill suggests that it may be prudent for Dallas to make a deal for a draft pick.

There is certainly nothing wrong with listening if you can parlay a former fourth-round pick (Tashard Choice) into possibly a third- or even a second-rounder.

The guys at DC.com on that idea.

Nick Eatman:

As for Choice, he just might be the most complete running back of the trio. He's strong and powerful inside, but has the speed to rip off some long runs. Just how many carries he gets this season will be an interesting situation for the coaching staff.

Josh Ellis:

I say no. I realize Choice came relatively cheap as a fourth-rounder last year, and he's behind Marion Barber and Felix Jones on the depth chart, but I really do think he could end up being the best player of the three. He might be the only guy the Cowboys have capable of being an every-down back, and in fact that's what he was at the end of last season, and toe injuries knocked Jones and Barber out of the lineup.

On Wednesday, the Cowboys will be scouting Rice tight end, James Casey. The private workout will be held in Houston. Casey is considered a hybrid player who can be utilized as a QB in a Wildcat offense.

FoxSports puts Dallas on the clock and asks Todd Archer about the Cowboys' needs going into the draft.

Here are some draft-day memories of five current Cowboys.

Mike Jenkins has switched his jersey from #31 to #21.

On Monday, Tony Romo launched yet another come-from-behind victory by winning the Will County Amateur Golf Championship in Crete, Illinois. And then, to celebrate his birthday on Tuesday, #9 won the Adams Golf Pro Scratch Championship tournament run by the N. Texas PGA.

Hat Tip to Wmillion for his post.

There are nine finalists for this year's Madden cover. Demarcus Ware is one of them. Although it would be awesome to have a Cowboy recognized, I'd rather pass. Brandon Jacobs is one of the other finalists...he, he.

Reminder - The BTB fundraiser is still going on and we'll be giving away the Triplets Lithograph to someone who has donated. It's a random drawing so get your name in the hat soon, by early next week, we'll be doing the drawing. BTB appreciates your support!

Don't get me wrong

Teams need mercenaries like Prime. And I agree that if he b/c a quarter as good as Prime, I would be happy.

Ok, lemme get this straight… we have 3 solid running backs but last year two of them missed significant time with injury. So Hill’s bright idea is to trade one. Better yet, he wants to trade the one that stayed healthy? So if two backs go down in ‘09, we’ll have some practice squad doucher lining up in the back-field? Ummm… no thanks. That’s about as smart as having Brad Johnson as your backup QB!

Trading Tashard Choice for a draft pick?

I consider Tashard a diamond in the rough of 4th rounders. You’ve caught a glimpse of what he can do…not to mention he is a classy guy, which is always great in the locker room. Would you really accept a 3rd rounder for him? No way! I know we are stacked at RB but I wouldn’t take anything short of a proven young veteran who plays in an area of need.

Would you trade Tashard (4th rounder) for a Bobby Carpenter (1st)?

by JoeWho on Apr 23, 2009 12:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

why on earth

would you trade a quality player like choice to move up in the draft when you have 11 picks to trade with?

by Barbie Carpenter on Apr 23, 2009 12:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed

I wouldn’t trade a proven commodity for a potential unknown. I would only trade Tashard for a current NFL player at position of need.

Agreed

You don’t turn proven and known quantities for unknown ones. At least those with likely no more upside than that you’ve already got.

by Ridgelake on Apr 23, 2009 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yup

Only way I’d do it is if I could nab someone’s 2010 1st rounder to get a real safety (Taylor Mays) since I don’t see any of this years becoming great. That said, I doubt anyone would give up a 1st for a guy who played very well against tough defenses, but only for a hand full of games.

by sublimezg on Apr 23, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

cause they're low picks

I had a talk with a source about a month ago and he mentioned this. If you want to make a big move, what are your assets?

He thought the team had some depth at corner and running back. But that was before Henry was flipped for Kitna.

He didn’t think, and I don’t think, that Choice is going to be dealt. It was purely hypothetical. But Dallas has shown they can draft backs. Barber and Choice both came out of the 4th. If you can get a 2nd or early 3rd for him, it deserves some consideration.

I’m intrigued by this fresh rumor that Philly is shopping Shaun Andrews. In ’06 that guy was probably the best guard in football. He destroyed Bradie James in the X-mas day game, when the Eagles ran for 200 yards.

He’s had trouble with depression, so he’s either damaged goods or the rumor is bunk. But man, he’s only 26. If he could be rehabbed, there’s Larry Allen Jr. right there.

I put the odds of his being available and being close to his old self, at less than 10%. But it’s fun to imagine.

by Rafael Vela on Apr 23, 2009 12:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

As many have noted

Barber, because of his running style, is probably not long for this league. This is one of the reason we need Choice. Choice needs carries to take some of the wear and tear off of Barber. Plus, when Barber finally wears himself out or his cap number makes keeping him prohibitive, that’s when Choice can step in full time. I don’t think I am in the minority at all here. In fact, is there anyone, besides Raf (I think that’s what your suggesting) who would take a 2nd or a 3rd for him?

Just thinking out loud, don't know what I'd really do

But if a team picking high in the 2nd offered their pick for Choice, I’d think long and hard before deciding. The question, in that scenario, would be something like this: would I trade the top safety prospect for Choice? or an O-lineman with a 1st round grade for Choice? I think I might.

Barber for Boldin

why is it so crazy to trade one of the RBs for an established WR like Boldin or Edwards? You could still use a lower round pick to p/u a RB if you are confident in the Boys ability to find a decent RB in later rounds. The way the receiving group is looking right now I think they could use alittle help. No way is Crayton a #2, and Austin has not really proven zilch yet

by xyz on Apr 23, 2009 12:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't want Boldin

But if I am trading one of the backs, it would be Barber. But the cap hit probably wouldn’t allow this.

by dave33 on Apr 23, 2009 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

cause it blows up your cap

Barber’s deal, which is one year old, accelerates incredible dead money onto this year’s cap.
Boldin will then want what Roy Williams is making.

which makes keeping Demarcus Ware harder.

by Rafael Vela on Apr 23, 2009 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How crazy?

Take what TO was making and combine that with what you would be losing in salary of one of the running backs and you are there (if you draft another receiver then there will obviously be some salary cap to be included also, so some savings have to be taken into account). Also it sounds alittle crazy thinking the receiving corp that da boys now have is going to strike fear in anyone. Look I realize you can not stack knee deep at every position but for the offense to work you have to have a passing and a running game. It just does not sound that far fetched to make a trade of one of our RBs to Arizona, who by the way is in dire need of a RB. If Roy or witten tweaks a toe, it is not going to matter what you do at any of the other positions because the offense will not carry the team….in my humble opinion anyway.

by xyz on Apr 23, 2009 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Have you heard of the salary cap?

No team can invest $20 million a year for two WRs.

You site Arizona but didn’t mention they had to redo Fiz’s contract and that now they have to shop Quan because his money doesn’t fit.

by birdness on Apr 23, 2009 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

but TO's $9 M is already counting against this year's cap

and you want to add Roy’s salary AND the accelerated money from Barber’s deal AND the money Boldin wants?

by Rafael Vela on Apr 23, 2009 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is not fantasy

football, you can’t have stars at every single position, let the young guys develop and keep trying to find a good receiver through the draft. And no I wouldn’t trade TC for a draft pick (unless it is a first, which is highly unlikely to happen)

He shot 84 at Torrey Pines in that hits and giggles thing last year. Two of those would have had him DFL after 36. He can’t hang in a tour event, let alone sectional qualifying for the US Open.

just say no

count me with the don’t-trade-choice crowd, unless someone is offering the moon. no one is untouchable if the price is right, but i’d count that price as pretty high. certainly not for a 3rd or 2nd rounder, imo.

if you had to trade one of the 3, i think it should be barber, who has the highest profile and is the proven commodity. he might actually bring something in return, and his running style may compromise his long-term viability. of course, other teams know that too…

Would you???

trade next years second for Ocho?? or possssibly Crayton???

I know this is fantasy football, but with chads market value waaaay down right now, and us not having too many HUGE holes, I would do a deal much like KC-ATL (2nd NEXT year for tony G) or throw Crayton out there (considering they would actually take him)..

I’m just not a very big fan of PC’s.. I cheer him on as long as he wears the star but he has T.O.s mouth without his numbers, and that just doesnt fly with me.

I would definatly throw next years second for Chad.. we would definatly have a pretty fearsome group of wideouts in 85, 19, 11, and throw in 82, 80, and 28.. But i agree with some of the above posts, at the moment, you look at the roster of wideouts and they dont scare ANYONE… we need a little push, and im sure 85 could give it.. but like raf said, its fun to imagine eh??

MBIII and Tash

I think that if Barber were traded after June the 1st then the cap hit (from his signing bonus only) would be $6.86m against the 2010 cap.

If he were traded a year later the cap hit would be $5.14m.

These figures don’t take into account the $4m in guarantees that make up part of his contract (and I can’t find the breakdowns for these), and I’m not sure if trading is the same as cutting a guy.

Perhaps he will get a heavy dose this year, and be shipped out before the start of next season.?

IMO Choice is in silver and blue for many years to come – he’s good, young and cheap!

Stephen Jones gets it done yet again

This is exactly what they should do, make Austin play for pay this year instead of just locking him up for what he might become.

This also lends more cred to them taking a WR in the top part of the draft. I just hope they can find a gem in the 4th round or later.

No way - I choose not to deal Choice

Dumbest thing I’ve heard – I wouldn’t do it – even for a first rounder.

Choice showed a lot last year against some really tough run defences – he could be a star – at worst a very solid backup. And he is a great locker room / leadership guy.

You don’t throw this away to chase “potential”. I chose to keep “performance”

Choice solidifies the RB position. Felix will be busy doing all kinds of other crazy stuff on the field, and Barber will be bangin’ away as usual. It’s likely Tashard will be depended upon again this year.
