Dallas is on the Clock at #51...You PICK

Ok, Jerry invites you into the "War Room" on draft day.  He looks a little worried; some of the players he was hoping for are off the board.  Tom Ciskowski reviews the remaining top players with you.  Jason Garrett is putting pressure on you for offensive help, but Wade Phillips reminds you that the defense has been suspect.

Then without any further discussion, Jerry Jones, looks you in the eye and says, "You make the call!"

Sean Smith

he could play both safety and CB, give him lots of old Henry’s old jobs. This guy can play special teams, and allows us to pick either a safety or CB in the latter rounds. whichever drops.

Imagine Smith in the second and Derek Pegues in the 5th or Smith in the second and Bradley Fletcher in the 5th.

Why would you not have FS-Louis Delmas as an option ??

not like I would have picked him….but I’m just pre-empting the barage of outcries your about to receive from his avid followers….

Conner Barwin is the most attractive player of the list, with the most upside of all the prospects….that’s my pick..

It would be very difficult to bypass Percy Harvin though….despite his “issues”, he’s the most dynamic player on this list, and will make an exciting Punt Returner and slot WR…..

by My_2_Cents on Apr 24, 2009 3:46 AM CDT reply actions

2 cents

I would LOVE to have Delmas at 51, but I didn’t list him because…..

To develop the list of 10+ players above, I….
1) Looked at about a dozen popular mock drafts, and Delmas was gone by #51 (he probably won’t be available)
2) I listed players that I saw available on those popular mocks beginning at #51 through about #61
3) I eliminated players that I thought we probably wouldn’t draft (QB, RB, TE, etc)
4) I hesitated to list Percy Harvin, ‘cause I’m pretty sure he’ll go in round 1, but some mocks still had him at #51
5) Some players that I thought would go in round 3 or 4, were listed in some mocks around pick #51 to #61, so I listed them.

I didn’t just pick and choose a bunch of names; rather, I listed players I thought we might me interested in and that I could find on some legitimate mocks still available at #51.

every mock I saw in 2004

had Steven Jackson going well before pick 24 so you never know.

You know...I'm starting to come around to the idea of them drafting chung.

I don’t know why I’ve been so hesitant to picture him with a star on his helmet; I guess I just didn’t notice him as much as Byrd or Nick Reed. It’s funny when you watch certain college teams and think one guy (Reed) will be a first-day lock because of their dominance on the field, but then other guys (Chung) get rated higher because they look to be better prospects on the pro level.

Maybe this is the year the Cowboys finally get good w/grabbing some Pac10 players.

i've heard...

that several teams(i believe incl. the cowboys) have taken sean smith off the board for “fit” issues regarding his personality.

in this situation percy harvin has the highest grade and is in a need position. pretty easy pick.

No Brainier!

If Harvin is there you take him…but there is no way the most dynamic player in the draft gets out of the 1st round.
With that being said I am beginning to warm up to the Moore pick, however I am still not certain about his coverage skills_ call any safety we may pick a strong safety if you want, but in today’s NFL he must be dependable in both the run and the pass. Sean Smith seems like he could be an exceptional value pick, but it seems like he may not be the head banger we need, at least not right away, but he does have speed and with the right coaching and attitude he could develop into a player that could fill many rolls.
Robinson I think would be solid and possibly start at least part time right away.
Robiski I think could be solid and raise the level of our back up WR core at least to start-think Santonio Holmes.
The Utah Guard if Robinson isn’t there?…seems like the area they said he may go..cant remember if this is the guy that did 38 reps if it is then, solid pick.
Loadholt…from what I have read this guy is getting the benefit of the demand in the NFL for OTs- everything I have read leads me to believe there is no real chance he could develop into a NFL left tackle- therefore you have to way him against what we have- is he that much of an upgrade to use your 1st pick?

by bad knees on Apr 24, 2009 7:58 AM CDT reply actions

I went with the Duke.

Pitt makes players in the trenches priorities and they are very successful. If you can control the ball, clock and line of scrimmage you can always be in the game late.
I have nightmares about our safety play but the value say you can get basically the same guy in the 3rd. Harvin is instant offense but so is Felix. A big NT would be great but with our present NT its just not as big as OL. I want to grind up the east. I want the team we beat on Sunday to lose the following Sunday cause they are still to beat up from the week before. I want to eat lighting and crap thunder.
Investing in your Lines isnt always the best pick but its never the wrong pick.(unless the guys sucks but that always the wrong pick)

Once again--we are eye-to-eye, Terry.

I hear more buzz about Harvin now that he’s dropped. WTF? We might as well bring in Plax or Matt Jones.

Robiskie is where it’s at. That dude can contribute immediately and be a solid WR for a while.
If Sean Smith is there, I’d have to think for a second—but, I’d still go with Robiskie (the smart pick).

BTW—that Andy Levitre guy is pretty good if he happens to slip into the 3rd.

NO on Chung!

its all committing crimes

which has been my point all along. It doesn’t matter if the actual behavior is okay with some fans because they’ve done it themselves, if you commit crimes as a player in the NFL, Goodell will come down on you hard, simple as that.

If Harvin is stupid enough to get busted for smoking pot before the combine, then he’s stupid enough to get in trouble as a pro where he’ll end up suspended and no good to the team.

I don’t care how talented a player is, I’ll pass every time.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Apr 24, 2009 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Speeding is commiting a crime doesnt mean it plays on his football skills

I agree with you it was stupid, and he probably is not a very intelligent guy always been in the spotlight banking football was his ticket, but the point is he can play. He has not commited any serious crime and so can not be compared to a pacman, matt j, or plax, he simply smoked and is stupid. Yet I dont think you have to be very smart to be a receiver. He has skills and could be an immediate impact player right away so yes u take a chance.

by rioplayer7 on Apr 24, 2009 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I might take issue with the phrase
I don’t think you have to be very smart to be a receiver

Generally, though not in every single case, but the GREAT MAJORITY of times, newly drafted WRs take about 3 years to develop in the NFL – because, of the smarts required to learn the complicated Offensive playbook, and to learn how to read NFL defenses, etc.

by BishopWest on Apr 24, 2009 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

there is a big difference between

a mere traffic citation and a misdemeanor or felony and in case you don’t know, the law says smoking pot is a misdemeanor and therefore a serious crime.

I trust Goodell will feel the same way.

by Terry on Apr 24, 2009 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

He would and so would 25% of the league minimum if it was strictly enforced

I am all with you that it was stupid e was not able to stay clean when you know a test is coming, but honestly it should not affect his draft stock if he was at a different position yes, but WR just isnt a position you need to think a lot about you just really need to react.

Top 10

Looking at old mock drafts dated December of last year. William Moore was rated as a top 15 pick (1st round ) on almost every draft. The guy played one bowl game since these drafts were " mocked ", what the heck could he have done to drop so far back ? Since Delmas wasn’t an option (who I think is a better player ) I would draft the unpopular Moore, or take Robiskie and shoot for Darcel Mcbath with one of the 4th round picks.

by leo88 on Apr 24, 2009 8:47 AM CDT reply actions

What Moore did...

was get consistently burned all year, letting WR’s get behind him. He looked confused, was out of position and was, at times, a liability.

Then what he did was have a weak performance in Indy.

I’m not a fan…

Brace

He immediately gets on the field as a two-down NT as a rookie and changes everything about our d-line.

No other player or position will have that kind of impact come game 1.

Not only our d-line but the defense all together. He’ll bolster our run defense and pass defense tremendously. Running lanes would be stuffed easily with our front 7 and the pass rush would flow a lot better due to more attention needed at the middle of their line. I agree with the term that says the game is won in the trenches! So if we win at the line of scrimage, where everything starts… then everything that follows will be in our favor!

It allows Ratliff to test his ability to penetrate in the Guard/Tackle gap, which is what Seymour does all day long in New England terrorizing opponents.

There are 3 players

that I would have a hard time choosing between if they were there at 51. They are Robiske, Delmas, and Smith. I think Robiske is the most polished WR in this draft and could come in and have a very good rookie season. Delmas could come in and by the end of the season be starting and he would fill a major hole. Smith could play corner or safety and be very good at both. I have to say though that I would take Robiske. I just think that this guy is going to be special.

by jack dein on Apr 24, 2009 11:08 AM CDT reply actions

Conner Barwin

I’d take a OLB to bookend with Ware and then trade Ellis for a 5th round pick.

Harvin will not be there at #51, he won’t be there at #41, there is no way he will fall that far. I’m sure he’s still going in the 1st to some team willing to take a risk on that kind of talent.

April 25-26 -- NFL Draft

by APerfectStar on Apr 24, 2009 2:11 PM CDT reply actions

everything I've read

…has Barwin as a weakside OLB like Ware, not enough size/strength to take on the strong side. I think Spencer is still going to be the guy over there, so Barwin would be a luxury as Ware’s backup and another 3rd down pass rusher. I like the guy, but I’d rather see help in the backfield or NT or OT.

by greatwhitenorth on Apr 24, 2009 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions

You have a good point

I like Brace (fingers crossed his back problems are a result of conditioning, or fixable), also huge fan of Robinson (I don’t like any OT’s that would be available at#51).

But I think Barwin is versatile enough to play either side, and Wade likes to move the front 7 around to disguise where the pressure is coming from, so I just think he’d be a great fit, and he’s got such a big upside, I would have to take him.

The top 3 vote getters

as of right now are:

27 Sean Smith, CB
23 Percy Harvin, WR
21 Robiskie, WR

Somehow, I really don’t think any of these 3 will actually be available at #51. And if they aren’t, then maybe a couple or 3 guys fall into our laps that are not on this list

Who do you think falls to #51?

Not a pipe dream, BUT REALLY, who you think that is an early round 2 pick that might slip thru the cracks and be there at #51 (that is not on the original list of this post?)
