The Valley Ranch Review: Draft Day Edition

This weekend has a holiday feel for Cowboys fans. Whether you are watching the draft alone at home, with some friends, or partying at the Arlington Convention Center, the #51 will be much anticipated. Will Dallas stick in that slot, or try to move up?

DMN's Todd Archer says that Jerry Jones may have a hard time staying put.

"We're going to put him in a straitjacket," executive vice president Stephen Jones joked.

For a second, Jerry Jones thought about the potential boredom of sitting on his hands for more than six hours Saturday.

"You're right," he said. "Put me in a straitjacket."

Here's something to chew on: FOX's Peter Schrager's complete seven-round mock draft.

51. Dallas - Patrick Chung, S, Oregon
69. Dallas - Pat White, QB, West Virginia
101. Dallas - Mike Wallace, WR, Ole Miss
117. Dallas - Alex Boone, OT, Ohio State
156. Dallas - Quan Cosby, WR, Texas
166. Dallas - Ryan Mouton, CB, Hawaii
172. Dallas - Augustus Parrish, OT, Kent State
197. Dallas - Andrew Gardner, OT, Georgia Tech
208. Dallas - Brandon Underwood, S, Cincinnati
210. Dallas - Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech
227. Dallas - Jamarko Simmons, WR, Western Michigan

Dallas needs to do a better job drafting offensive linemen.

DMN's draft series features Ohio State WR, Brian Robiskie.

Tony Romo and Baltimore's Joe Flacco were quarterbacks found from colleges not necessarily known for producing pro players, let alone starting QBs. Their successes may help open the doors for this year's crop of obscure gun-slingers.

I hate the late start time for the draft this year

Anyone else wish they would get going at 12:00? It would make me feel better about cracking open my first adult beverage early. No first round pick is kind of a drag too. Oh well—should be interesting.

Normally I would hate it at 4

But this year is good, I got some time to hit the beach before the draft starts. Anyway, I am a huge Brian Robiskie fan, I would love to see us draft him. I know we have needs at safety, but do you think any of the safety prospects we are looking at will outperform Sensabaugh?

by witten82 on Apr 25, 2009 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions

This year Sensie >>> then all the prospects

NFL moves at a different speed and any rookie will have to learn the ropes. Long term is a whole different story. The rookie will have a second round (or later) contract. Sensie plays great now, he could end up with a Hamlin contract.

To be honest who can really project what a rook will become, likewise how much growth does Sensie still have?

by birdness on Apr 25, 2009 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Here's a thought

Why are we so high on Sensi? As good as he can be, he could also be teh suck. We just don’t know for sure, and I’m surprised so many posters are taking it as a given that he’ll be just fine.

Everything's looking up, Milhouse!

by accidental innuendo on Apr 25, 2009 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree

I HOPE he’s very good, but I’m always very skeptical when there is a player that dallas signs that is somewhat cheap.

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

by AirforceBat on Apr 25, 2009 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

He was a NFL starter

Sensi finished his initial contract, the Jags didn’t want to give him market value, it not like they throw a ton of money around. He’s the ideal rental – an experienced player that must fight for his next contract. If he produces, he’ll get his money next year. If he doesn’t work out, he won’t break the bank.

by birdness on Apr 25, 2009 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah it makes no sense for the late start time..

I like Chung, but #51 is a little too high for him…The more and more I think about it Jerry is going to move up. Maybe not the first round, but the top of the 2nd maybe…

by Boyzfan94 on Apr 25, 2009 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Next years

Safety class is way better. But I couldn’t argue if we took one early today, we desperately need one. I don’t think Sensabaugh is the answer at SS. Hell, I’m not sure Hamlin is the answer either (at SS or FS).

That's too early for Chung

Unless Chung is Jerry’s guy, two or more safeties could be drafted before Chung. That means two or more players at other positions slide down. Is Chung better than Loadholt, Robinson, Wood, Robiske, Brace, …

I made a last mock

I’m predicting that Delmas, Sean Smith, Robiskie and most of the other 2nd Round graded players at positions of need won’t be there at 51, so I started looking for trade down partners and I found the Chargers, those guys have a big need for a 3-4 DE and I think that Jarron Gilbert is going to be there. That trade works for Dallas (they get a 3rd and 4th this year and a 3rd next year) and works for San Diego.

And the mock goes like this:

3 (69) – CB/FS/StarDB Sherrod Martin
3 (78) – ILB Jason Williams
4 (101) – T Robert Brewster
4 (113) – G/C T.J. Lang
4 (117) – NT Chris Baker
5 (156) – WR Brooks Foster
5 (166) – CB/FS Don Carey
5 (172) – CB Brice McCain
6 (197) – G Roger Allen
6 (208) – FB Brannan Southerland
7 (210) – TE Davon Drew
7 (227) – ILB Joshua Mauga

The horrible Fox mock made me want to post this…. Pat White? Alex Boone? Ugh. I also don’t agree with Chung, but I can see that happenning.

Final Mock

I think Louis Delmas, Max Unger, Brian Robiskie, William Moore, Lawrence Sidbury & possibly Ron Brace are ALL off the board when Dallas picks at 51. With that in mind, here is my final mock (all 11 picks). SEC top heavy. I also think the WR the Boys like is Massaquoi. Hoping for a solid draft!

PS:

don’t trade up for the A&M QB!

2. Mohamed Massaquoi, WR, Georgia
3. Rashad Johnson, FS, Alabama
4. Andy Levitre, OG, Oregon St.
4. Brandon Williams, DE/OLB, Texas Tech
5. Corvey Irvin, DT, Georgia
5. Quinn Johnson, FB, LSU
5. Antonio Appleby, ILB, Virginia
6. Brandon Hughes, CB, Oregon St.
6. Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech
7. Phillip Hunt, OLB, Houston
7. Cary Harris, CB, USC

Shallow first round doesn't mean it's a weak draft

There are plenty of potential players out there. Maybe not elite players but every year some team hits on a UFA that sticks on the roster long term. Some of these guys grow to become expensive free agents – how much money did the Jet’s pay for the Raven’s UFA LB?

by birdness on Apr 25, 2009 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Is it really shallow?

I’ve read somewhere that the Boy’s have identified 23 first round prospects, which is on par with most years

by AustonianAggie on Apr 25, 2009 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think it's shallow

Several hot junior prospects had so so senior years. Last year there was a little more hype with Dorsey, Dmac, and Howie Long Jr. This year, at least at the top it just looks like take the safest player. There could be 5 LTs in the first 15 picks.

If will be an interesting second round as note of the safeties or OG are worth a first.

What happens with the Pack and Broncs both changing to the 3-4, that could cause a couple 4-3 DEs to fall.

Likewise there are questions about the second tier WRs so is Britt too slow, will Robiske climb or fall. I actually think they will both be gone by #51.

There will be trades and it adds up to a ton of uncertainty – so get them picking already!

I can't decide if I should go to the local salsa festival

I’ll miss probably the full first round, but hey, all I care about is the Boys pick(s?)

Lot’s of hot girls and salsa’s from all over, hmmm. sigh
