Someone straighten me out, because I'm confused.

If Mike Mayock is right and this draft is one of the worst in recent years, and if Jerruh is right and they could line up and play right now, and if they really ony have a couple of spots open for competition, then WHY IN THE HECK do we trade DOWN for more picks to use on players who probably wont make the team?  Let me see, if the draft is weak we trade down to get more of the players at the BOTTOM of a WEAK draft?  I understand the concept of slotting players, and I understand players having a grade for a certain round, and I cedrtainly understand not wanting to pay a player more than he should get based on his grades, but this makes little or no sense based on the talent already on the roster.  I'm sure they will use some of the ELEVEN picks they have on day 2 to move around, etc, but they could have used some of those picks to go up and get a player how may have a chance at at least PLAYING.  Eveyone has said that this draft is neither DEEP or TALENTED, let's get MORE of those types in camp!  What a freakin' joke.

I'm just frustrated that they sat on their arse's  and essentially PUNTED!!!

It’s 1996-2001 all over again. They called it “drafting for depth” back then. Basically we trade down (passing on good available players) in order to draft back-ups who will make no impact on our team in the short term or the long term. The sad thing is there are a few players that could help us still available (Rashad Johnson being foremost among them) but we will reach with our third tomorrow to take a guy like James Casey.

Do you really want me to list players that are still available that can still make an impact that the cowboys have actually looked at and invited to Valley Ranch?

I don't get it either.

We were 9-7 last year and lost talent on both sides of the ball. That doesn’t exactly scream “we don’t need anyone from Day 1.”

This is good Guys

This means they think Sensi is gonna be the real thing or there sold on a Saftey from next year. We only have one pick today caz if you forgot we picked a WR with our first round pick there are alot of solid “football guys” left for the plucking and hopefully jerry trys and package some of those picks to move up to grab a couple players really high on there board.

I thank God everyday i wasnt born a Eagles fan!!!!!!

They also thought

Pat Watkins was the real thing at one point. And Tony Dixon. And Bullets.

Ya and Ryan Leaf and Mike Williams and ........ect

If you want to name Bust lets do it…. Sensi was a starter on another team Was Patrick Watkins??? Nope…… so think about comparisons before you state them

I thank God everyday i wasnt born a Eagles fan!!!!!!

by regaberto on Apr 26, 2009 12:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They also let Abram Elam, an actual decent safety go

Sensi was a starter – big deal. People weren’t lining up to sign him. He may be Jacksonville’s Pat Watkins.

The comparision remains valid. You stated, and I will translate, “they think Sensi is going to be the real thing”. They thought the same of the players I mentioned, and were dreadfully wrong, and the team and fans paid a dear price. Sorry if I have trouble believing that Jerry has it all figured out on the safety position now.

Don’t forget he Santa Claused Hamlin after one decent season as well.

3rd and 4th Round Have Good Players...

I have to say I was dissapointed we didn’t pick today, but there is always tomorrow. 3rd and 4th rounds have been good to Cowboys the last few years. Remember Barber, Witten, Choice….to name a few. Just hope they have some more good luck.

by Boyz4Life on Apr 25, 2009 10:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Don't be so down

I’ve really looked into the 3rd and 4th rounds. We still have quite a few guys that can make an impact. Just to name a few, Rashad Johnson, Dorell Scott, Brandon Tate, Ramses Barden, Jasper Brinkley, and Lardarius Webb amonst many others. Don’t forget, there is only one team with 12 picks in this draft still and that is us. The closest i think that any team comes to us in pick numbers is the pats with 9 now. We now command Sunday and have plenty of leverage to get what we want. And the reason Jerry is so good at wheeling and dealing is because he is a GM that was actually a business man previously in the Oil industry, therefore he knows how to sell and persuade. I got no worries. Can’t wait to give my own standing ovation to welcome the newest cowboys tomorrow.

how much have the giants or eagles really improved

giants added another young wr to their young wr mix. They added Canty and bernard, which just helps a position of strength. They’ve done nothing legitimate to fix their wr problem. Boley is a good player, but not a gamechanger.

the eagles lost thomas and signed peters – im not sure theres an improvement in pass protection there. Peters has been abused by quicker players the last 2 years. They lost dawkins and considing and have done next to nothing to fix that problem, they have a gaping hole. O and sheldon brown wants out. They didn’t add a legitimate weapon at wr, and their biggest problem – mcnabbs still their qb. I cna’t imagine another year is going ot help him out. O and westbrooks over 30.

In terms of who improved the most this offseason…Romo getting a connection with roy will be far more beneficial than anything those two teams did. If it happens.

easy, not at all

Eagles got Maclin (whoopadeedoo!!!!). Maclin still has to beat out Desean Jackson, Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis for any offensive playing time. Essentially it was a waste of a pick and was really stupid. They should have gotten their HB there for the change of pace and heir apparent to Donovan McNabb, not another receiver who won’t make an impact. The giants, heh, lost Plax and Toomer, and gained Hakeem Nicks. No improvement there, and still don’t have a receiving corps. Still worse off than they ended last season. The smartest and only smart move in the NFC east was for Brian Orakpo, but he is just replacing Jason Taylor, who was much better there, so still worse off than they ended off with. Even without a pick the first day, we’re still the most complete team in the NFL.

Correction

Smartest move in the NFC east was us trading down from #51 as there was no value there for the money or skill to take there.

Orakpo's going to be a monster

Jason Taylor did nothing for the Redskins. They’ve improved a great deal on defense, with Orakpo and Haynesworth…and their solid QB is now off chopping block. They’re a dangerous team, no doubt.

Maclin’s crazy good. He’ll definitely see a lot of playing time in this upcoming season. He’ll likely be a starter for years to come.

New York got rid of a prima donna receiver and another receiver as old as time. Steve Smith is a solid option at #2, and Nicks could very well become a legitimate #1 receiver. The Giants also got a lot better on defense during free agency. Chris Canty, for instance. They’re defense is what carries them. Factor in Osi’s return, they’ve immediately improved.

We did happen to get rid of T.O., but now we’re relying on a guy who caught 19 passes, and another guy who’s only caught 18 passes in 3 seasons(I like Roy, and love Austin as much as a heterosexual man who’s never met the dude can but c’mon…that’s scary on paper). We lost Canty, Thomas, Pacman, Tank Johnson(no sweat), etc. and we haven’t made a pick yet. We picked up a few guys that seem impressive(Sensabaugh, Olshansky, etc.) but in no way have we improved at the level the rest of the division has.

I only think Terrel will hurt us

We lost Canty But gained Igor…a very viable replacement. We lost Thomas.. Upgraded in my opinion. Pacman wasnt all that good and was slowing teh development of the rookies. tank… blew were better off. T.O…. thats were it gets scary If Roy steps up, were good. If he doesnt i think we have a subpar season. Im Hoping we have a couple hits in the draft like especially with ILB and Punt returner..

I thank God everyday i wasnt born a Eagles fan!!!!!!

I agree tha ti like what washington did this offseason.

Haynesworth and Orakpo makes their line formidable, which has been of their main weaknesses.

Maclin is very similar to jackson, and even though i’m scared of that combo, it makes them kinda one dimensional in that regard, no?

There is no way you can say new york had a good offseason at the wr position. They went form Plax, Toomer and Smith to Hixon or Nicks, Smith and Manningham. At this point, Austin is a heck of a lot more likely to make a difference for us than nicks is for the giants. Even in the long run.

I think we’ve had a fill in the holes and build team character type of offseason. Which is exactly what I think we need.

Again. If Romo and Roy get on the same page, it will make as big a difference as any signing/drafting in the nfc east.

by foyesboys on Apr 26, 2009 1:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not as pessimistic as the previous post would lead you to believe

It was primarily just for dramatic effect. I think Jerry can turn it around and get us some good players to contribute right away. I also like our additions through free agency. I even like the T.O. move, if for no other reason than to reduce the headache he brought with him. I just don’t think it’s wise to get out hopes up like we did last year, assuming we had the team to beat, and that the rest of the division couldn’t compare.

If Romo can finally prove he’s the real deal, Roy shows up and becomes the #1 receiver he should be, Austin does what I think he will, Witten and ‘Tellus do their thing, our RB trio is optimized, and the O-line does what it has the potential to do, and the defense improves ever so slightly, we’ve got a championship caliber team. The only problem with that is, none of that apart from maybe Witten and Bennett being awesome are a given.

Epic Fail since 1985

by the red scare on Apr 26, 2009 1:48 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

o i agree

we are NOT the team to beat as of now lol. But we have just as good a shot as new york or philly. In addition, Philly’s window probably closes in the next two years unless they can find a suitable replacement for mcnabb – they’re gonna look awfully silly with a bunch of fast, quick players in a pass happy offense if their qb can’t run the WCO.

Im not buying into this philly stuff yet. Every year we hear that they’re gonna be back playing at an elite level and it doesn’t happen. Now its supposed to happen after losing their locker room leaders?

If players can stay healthy, we’ll be right there for the division in december and probably be better than 10-6 or better.

Also, you don’t need to be some perfect team to win the superbowl. The Giants, Cardinals, Eagles, Steelers, Titans and Ravens were playing the best at the end of the season last year and those teams were FAR from perfect. If Austin steps up as a deep threat, Romo finds the connection with Roy, Sensabaugh does an adequate job, and we avoid serious injury to romo and the lb/secondary, we’ll be in very good position.

Especially now that we took a good hard look at improving our special teams.

You are so wrong

We are still the most complete team in the NFL and each NFC east team except the cowboys has done nothing but get worse overall so far. Name one thing that any one of those teams has done to improve and I will prove you wrong, because every off-season move made by the Giants, Eagles and Redskins has just been to fill peoples shoes, nothing more, and in fact have done a horrible job filling said shoes of former players like Jason Taylor, Brian Dawkins, Lito Shephard, Plaxico Buress, Amani Toomer, and Tra Thomas.

Tony Romo off in dat hole, Watch roll and watch him throw, Watch him lead dem cowboys to the super bowl, now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys!

Most complete team in the NFL?

Id love to believe you but that just seems like Homerism. The Giants d-line should be even better this year with both Canty coming in and Osi returning from injury. The Redskins with Haynseworth and Orakpo should be pretty good in that area aswell. The cowboys o-line doesnt give me hope against either. The Eagles have finally made progress towards giving McNabb a decent offence to work with.

So far we have done nothing except lose our most explosive weapon and draft nobody on the first day of the draft. I would question whether we are even the most complete team in our division, the Giants were better than us last year, and have made more improvment. The Eagles and Redskins have caught up too.

That Cowboys Kool-Aid must be extremely potent

We’ve got a talented team with a lot of potential. Nowhere near the most complete roster in the NFL. Gaping hole at strong safety which we plugged with a one year contract to a player who is apparently injury prone. We replaced an aging ILB with the exact same thing. Tossed a starting corner for a back up QB(don’t hate the move, but still…). Lost Canty, who was very underrated to a division rival(replaced by a player who’s supposed to be awesome, but still…dude went to the Giants…c’mon. That really sucks) Ate 9 million dollars against the cap to cut a starting receiver(oh and apparently some guys in the locker room might hate our starting QB for it…great). We’re paper thin at OLB, ILB, Safety, O-line, etc. To top it all off, we stayed out of the first day of the draft entirely. We are clearly in great shape for the ‘09 season. Bad friggin’ ass.

Some teams actually had good offseasons. Dallas may be extremely talented, but they’re going to have to hit on a lot of draft picks tomorrow to make me believe we’ve improved to the same degree every other team in the division has.

agreed

I think we are on par with the giants, eagles and redskins, but I don’t think any one roster is clearly better than another.

But i disagree with you on the extent to which these teams improved. With the draft, its impossible to tell. And I don’t agree with the eagles and giants having improved through free agency. The Giants have nothing substantial at the position than ruined them alst year (wr) and philly hasn’t addressed their safety issue. And frankly, I don’t see McNabb playing well much longer….its questionable how well he played for most of last year, and i think that has little to do with his wrs when hes throwing the ball into the turf,

I knew it

After Delmas, Chung, Robiskie and Brace were all taken at the beginning of the second round I knew the cowboys would most likely trade down. There were no more players that were worth trading up for and no player they could have taken with the 51st pick that would have had a chance at beating out any of the starters for a spot on the field or gotten considerable playing time that would have been worth the money. 1st day picks get good field time, while second day picks are mostly special teams and depth, which is essentially ALL WE NEED. We now control that part and can pretty much have our way and get any player we want almost with 2 3rd rounders, 3 4th rounders, 3 5th rounders, 2 6th rounders and 2 7th rounders. Very smart move, and i’m stoked about it

I really don't like that thinking

Drafting for backups means that when your starters age or go elsewhere, you’re left with a team full of backups.

by sactown on Apr 26, 2009 12:06 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let me get this straight

We all love what Ciskowski did last year finding talent on day 2. But now we dont trust the decision to pass on one pick and get some good players in the 3rd and 4th round? And who says we’re only looking for backups? Do I need to list the starters on this team that we drafted on day 2? “In Cisk We Trust”
