Dallas Cowboys 2009 Draft (Day 2): Open Thread IV

[UPDATE]: With the 172nd pick, the Cowboys select: David Buehler, K, USC

NFL Draft Countdown on David Buehler

[UPDATE]: With the 166th pick, the Cowboys select: Michael Hamlin, S, Clemson

NFL Draft Countdown on Michael Hamlin

Michael_hamlin_medium

New thread in the fifth round. The last trade was, I believe, the Cowboys giving up #156 and #210 to get to #143 and pick DeAngelo Smith.

I think we have five left: 166,172, 197, 208 and 227. If that's wrong let me know and I'll correct.

Cowboys haul so far:

#69: Jason Williams, ILB, Western Illinois

#75: Robert Brewster, T/G, Ball State

#101: Stephen McGee, QB, Texas A&M

#110: Victor Butler, OLB, Oregon State

#120: Brandon Williams, OLB, Texas Tech

#143: DeAngelo Smith, CB, Cincinnati

of course you do

because this is one of the worst draft classes ever.

of course you would hate it, duh!

I use to love to hit, I use to take it serious. I only got one at bat a year, maybe...but, I took it serious. I hit 1.000 one year, if i had another at bat, I'd hit 2.000...

amazing the insight you guys have...

How you’re so certain they’re all busts before the pads goes on is amazing!

Definitely

They can’t be worse than what we have.
I think we’ll have to trade up to get a good LT next year.

I’ve been down this no name draft spectacle with Jerry running Dallas’ draft before in 95-97 and again in 99-03.

Why do you think this one is different?

Terrence Newman 5'11", Orlando Scandrick 5'10"

I think his height will be just fine. If anything, he’ll be in for passing situations, like 3rd and long.

Brandon Williams from Matt Mosley Blog

Texas Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill told DallasNews.com’s Tim MacMahon that the Cowboys got quite a player in outside linebacker Bradon Williams.

“Brandon has been nothing but a model student and player for us at Texas Tech,” McNeill said. “I’m on the road recruiting right now looking for guys with the attributes he has on and off the field. What the Cowboys get is a great locker-room guy who is very team-oriented. He’s a guy they’ll love being around, because he’s got a little prankster in him. We’d love to have Brandon back, but we wish him well.”

If we believe the draft boards...

we haven’t done well in the draft. Our picks were (mild) reaches and we got no “value” picks who are falling in the draft board. We didn’t get Unger, nor a top safety, nor one of the several 3rd-4th round receivers and we just missed on Gilbert (SJ State). I agree with the earlier comments that other teams were a beat ahead of us.

And we picked up no picks in next years draft. On that front, the Patriots were two or three beats ahead of everyone else. They acquired TWO 2nd rnd picks in the 2010 draft by trading out of the 3rd round.

by Eagles suck on Apr 26, 2009 2:08 PM CDT reply actions

What would it have taken to move up a few spots and take him? A fifth or so?

Patriots

My only explanation as to how the heck they do this every year is that they have a cheat sheet of EVERY TEAM’S boards and so they know which team would want to trade up. The crap they pull is absolutely ridiculous.

by foyesboys on Apr 26, 2009 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Were they a beat ahead or just in the right place at the right time.

I would have liked to have traded up but maybe there were no dance partners. We had a good idea of who they liked early and they all seemed to go right before us.

Hamlin sounds like he's a hitter and has the size for SS

I guess he’ll be a RW1 replacement. hopefully he won’t be the burn target for opposing teams.

Michael Hamlin scouting report

http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/s/Michael-Hamlin.php

Michael Hamlin
Height: 6-2 | Weight: 214 | 40-Time: 4.58

Strengths:
Great size and bulk…Has long arms…Nice instincts…Reads and reacts quickly…Tough and physical…Reliable tackler…Does a terrific job against the run…Good hands and ball skills…Can do some damage in the open field…Active and aggressive…Smart with a fantastic football IQ…Has a ton of experience…A team captain and leader…Productive.

Weaknesses:
Average athleticism…Does not have great speed…Hips aren’t fluid…Is not overly explosive and lacks a burst…Range is limited…Will struggle to match up in man coverage situations…Does not change directions all that well…Has trouble shedding blocks…Some durability concerns.

Notes:
Was a four-year starter for the Tigers…Named 2nd Team All-ACC in 2007 and 1st Team in 2008…Brothers, Markee and Marquais, play football at South Carolina St…Missed three games with a broken foot in 2006…Required surgery to repair a stress factor in his foot in February of 2007…Profiles as a strong safety…Definitely has the ability to be a starter so long as his coverage responsibilities are minimized to a degree…An excellent college player with top-notch intangibles but his lack of speed will likely hinder him at the next level.

Leadership

Most of what I’m seeing on Hamlin says he’s a vocal leader. I know he won’t be able to fire up the D as a rookie, but maybe he can get special teams to play like they care.

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

by TK19 on Apr 26, 2009 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Definitely in Trouble

He’s been like the invisible man so far. Time to see who else can play.

by kindablue on Apr 26, 2009 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

or may go back to corner?

I think there’s going to be some serious competition at the depth spots across the secondary. I want to best players around and versatility helps. Brown and DeAngelo Smith will probably be competing with each other as well. How about Alan Ball? Is he gone if these rookies can play?

Obviously I would prefer to have the spots locked up with pro-bowlers, but I like how we have some real options here. Ken Hamlin can play either safety spot and if the other guy is more of a FS (which seems likely) we can do that, if we get a good SS, we can move Hamlin. You’ve got a lot of football players competing for a bunch of spots, rather than a few corners fighting for the corner spots, free safeties for the FS spots, etc. Hopefully this will mean good things. Campo should be able to get the best players on the field because of how versatile a lot of these guys are.

Teams do seem to find a way to win with young, late round picks starting at safety. Maybe we can, too?

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
