Two Ways To Look At This Draft
1. (From the standpoint of a die-hard, blue Cool-aid drinking Cowboy fan). Jerry Jones must have gotten an organizational psychologist on the payroll before the draft, because he has served notice to all players that their job is up for grabs. Romo, Folk, Ellis, anyone and everyone who had bad seasons and contributed to the most disappointing season in team history is not assured of a job next year.
The "carpet-bomb" approach brought in players who all share a common theme: locker room, high character players - many of them were team captains in college. The new "dirty dozen" will band together during minicamp, push each other to be the best they can be, and make this team better.
2. (From the standpoint of a die-hard Cowboys fan who has seen what years of Jerry Jones incompetence has done to a once-great franchise). Hello 1996 draft all over again. None of these clowns will be in the NFL in 3 years.
So, what do you think?

on ST for sure and maybe nickel packages
He’s fairly raw and still a few years away from starting, but you have to love his tremendous athletic ability.

these players
seem to grade a lot higher in versatility and character than the sort of players we drafted in 1996. Brewster may epitomize that. I was not in love with that pick (I really liked Rashad Johnson there) but after reading his bio and quotes, I think he will work like hell to make this team and provide for his daughter. As always, I am very anxious for training camp to get here so we can see what these guys can do with pads on.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Can't you be somewhere in the middle?
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
I take issue with Point One
The only current players in danger of losing their jobs are not ones like you mentioned (Romo, Folk, or Ellis) – but rather marginal guys at the bottom of the roster.
Look at Raf’s recent post:
A lot of rookie have chances to stick
1. Jason WIliams for Burnett;
2. Brewster challenges McQuistan
3. McGee kicks Bollinger to the curb;
4. Butler takes Justin Rogers’ spot;
5. Williams gets Octavien’s/Polks/Carpenter’s old spot
6. Hamlin has Davis’ old spot;
7. Hodge displaces Battle
8. Smith challenges Watkins
9. Phillips takes Curtis’ old spot
The guys in trouble?
McQuistan
Bollinger
Rogers
Octavien
Polk
Carpenter
Battle
Watkins
Curtis
You can understand this logic without drinking any Kool-Aid.
You could replace any one
of those guys with UDFA’s and be better off, if you look hard enough..

I understand what you're saying...
but more then likely if you replace them with UFA’s, you’re replacing them with guys you have to settle on, who might not be any better.
I didn’t like this draft, but at least they got who they wanted to compete for certain roles.

3 things
I don’t know if you just made an error or just didn’t know but 3 of those guys are no longer on the roster. Bollinger was a free agent, Curtis signed with the cheifs (the main reason they needed a BLOCKING tight end) and i’m pretty sure polk was only signed to a 1 year deal anyway so he is also gone and was not resigned. Other than that, yeah, those guys are in trouble.
Tony Romo off in dat hole, Watch roll and watch him throw, Watch him lead dem cowboys to the super bowl, now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys!

I think that your examples are for role players that have left the team and for players that
have not shown enough to become better than marginal players.
Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!
why make this black and white?
drafts take three years to grade. Nobody really knows how this will turn out. I think the one thing we can say is, it BETTER improve our special teams imediately and drastically, for starters. I can see four guys making an impact on defense in this draft (down the line)in addition to special teams. If that happens and Roy plays well, this draft is a B or an A.

Thought I would be plain and simple about it.
"Well, we didn't block real good but we made up for it by not tackling."

One year is not a pattern, my statistical compadre...

But who is to say this year didn't continue where they left off in 08?
We know absolutely nothing at this point. Might as well at least see what this draft class is made of before we start screaming bloody murder.

But now that you mention it...
Bishop, could you do an analysis (I ask because you rock in this arena) of the draft choices made during the Tuna and Jimmy years versus the Jerry/Lacewell and Jerry/Cisky years?
Maybe look at pro bowlers, starters, still on team, not on team anymore, not in NFL anymore, etc.?
I think that would be illuminating.

in 2 years of jerry/cisky
if we already make the gross assumption of calling this a failure, its right on track for the tuna years, which was 2 really good drafts and 2 poor ones if i remember right. Also, Ireland was here for 2006, which turned out be a pretty average draft where folk and spencer are the only guys who really stand out. A bunch of other role players for us but they won’t be on the team 2 years from now. I’m not sure how you want to incorporate that.
BTW ghost, get real
Romo will start next year no matter what as McGee is extremely raw and won’t be ready for at least 2 or 3 years at minimum.

Option 2
None of these guys will push any of the starters for their jobs. We will be lucky if they become 2nd stringers.
We didn’t go BPA. We drafted players to be backups and special teamers. Terrible strategy.
I disagree
First of all, there weren’t any players in the rds 3 through 7 who would push the starters fro their jobs.
Second, they did go BPA off their board, just because their board doesn’t coincide with Kipers and McShays or any other so called draft expert doesn’t mean anything.
Finally, I think drafting for backups and ST in a weak draft is a very smart strategy.
