Will he or won't he? There seems to be some confusion about where Texas Tech UDFA Graham Harrell will sign. Reports said with the Cowboys, but it appears it might actually be the Browns.

First, the Graham Harrell rumors about his signing with the Cowboys were confusing. They were rumors, after all. Harrell's first rookie minicamp will be as a Brown.

Here's the 8 undrafted free agents the Cowboys have agreed to terms with so far. Expect this list to be continued as more players are confirmed.

We knew about these guys:

WR Julian Hawkins, Boise State

WR Kevin Ogletree, Virginia (He was ranked the #7 undrafted prospect by draftcountdown.com)

G Greg Isdaner, West Virginia (Russ Lande at The Sporting News ranked Isdaner the #18 prospect still available for Day 2 of the draft.)

Dallas has dipped into The Fighting Irish's player pool.

Notre Dame FB Asaph Schwapp will report to Dallas.

The Dallas Cowboys have come to terms with Notre Dame fullback Asaph Schwapp, TheRanchReport.com has learned.

Schwapp, considered the strongest player on the Fighting Irish team, only had 44 career rushers for 98 yards but is considered a devastating blocker at the point of attack.

OL Mike Turkovich, Notre Dame

According to DC.com, "Turkovich (6-5, 305) was a two-year starter with experience at guard and tackle."

Here's two more:

OG Travis Bright, BYU

From dmn's blog:

Bright (6-5, 316) also has medical issues, having had a rod inserted to stabilize his broken leg two years ago. He's a mauler who can bench press 540 pounds.

TE Jamar Hunt, UTEP

From dmn's blog:

Hunt (6-7, 260) caught 31 passes for 367 yards and two TDs as a senior. He turned 26 years old in December.

QB Rudy Carpenter, Arizona St.

From DC.com's Josh Ellis:

Carpenter threw for 81 touchdowns and 10,491 yards in college. He had long been thought of as a draftable prospect, but had arguably his worst season as a senior, passing for just 16 touchdowns to go with 2,493 yards. Carpenter is 6-3, 225, the same size as the Cowboys' fourth-round pick, Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee. The Cowboys typically carry four quarterbacks through training camp in order to keep everyone's arm fresh.

I really like the way this camp is setting up. i believe we are finally following the Patriots model get a bunch of hard nosed versitile players who can contribute at multiple positions.

Ball and brown better keep renting. I’d like to see a complete churning of the bottom of this roster. Who knows maybe we could trade ellis and barbie for peppers. just a thought.

Barber is here to stay but Ellis

may be gone if one of the LD/DE we just drafted can show that he has the tools to get the QB consistently in camp.

Ogletree has got some speed so lets see if he can be our pr

I dont know if he did it in college I usually am stuck watching Big 12 games so did anybody see this guy did he return punts at all?

by rioplayer7 on Apr 27, 2009 2:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Im stuck watching WAC games so i dont know much either

But on http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings?&print_rows=9999 Hes ranked the 117 overall prospect and Is rated the 117 best player in the draft and runs a 4.36 at the combine. So hes got potential. I cant really find to much on him but from everything ive seen he looks to of been a 3-4 round talant that just slipped. Which kindof makes me wonder why we picked manuel instead of him?

I thank God everyday i wasnt born a Eagles fan!!!!!!

Rudy Carpenter has been one of my favorite College QBs.

A prime candidate for the practice squad. I love his upside.

Rudy Carpenter

That’s funny, he’s probably one of my most hated non Big 12 player of all time.

I remember Texas’s defense beating the living hell out of him in the Holiday Bowl.

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

He had a terrible offensive line and for a drop back passer that's not good

Good not great arm, good accuracy. Has those “intangibles” people love: Gritty, leader, hustle.

Indeed, he does sound like a beast.

Here’s a nice piece on him from last year appropriately titled “Asaph Schwapp: Muscle Man”.

I love that last name

Schwapp – verb, meaning to block a player with such force as to cause said player’s knees to buckle.

Guess da King learned the #2 QB lesson by acquiring Jon Kitna… and learned the “Matt Moore lesson,” by drafting Stephen McGee and signing Rudy Carpenter.

I love the fact that they’re making an attempt to shore up weaknesses and add some depth.

Terrible job with the UDFAs

Ogletree is the only one who excites me. And there were plenty of talented guys who could compete on this roster:

OO Gerald Codogan
S Otis Wiley
ILB Darry Beckwith
S Derek Pegues (still unsigned)
CB Bruce Johnson
WR Quan Cosby
OG Roger Allen
OG Andy Kemp
OT Alex Boone
OT Joel Bell
NT Chris Baker
DE Mitch King
OT Jason Watkins
LB Frantz Joseph
LB Jonathan Casillas
LB Dannell Ellerbe
S CJ Spillman
DE/LB Philip Hunt (still unsigned)
DE Rulon Davis

All this talent and all we get was Ogletree. Maybe Asscap Schwepps or whatever his name is will be a player, but I’m guessing not.

I would rather have this haul of Free Agents than what we actually got.

... can't help a comment here...

TCB, you do realize that 31 other teams didn’t think any of these guys were worth a 7th, right? Yet you continue to put your faith in the draftnik scuttlebutt?

That’s 31 other groups of PROFESSIONAL DRAFT TEAMS … all passed on EVERY SINGLE GUY ON YOUR LIST… despite the media screaming about how great they looked.

and yet you still would rather have your haul?

I think I’d rather pull for the guys in camp until they prove me wrong on the field.

by DalaiLuke on Apr 27, 2009 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It has little to do with...

pulling for the guys in camp. It is more about having an opinion that differs with Jerry Jones. I for one, am so upset over the draft that I haven’t even bothered to look at free agents, until now. But, IMHO, there are half a dozen people on this free agent list that we didn’t sign that I would have preferred over half of the draft choices.

That half dozen includes: Cadogan, Beckwith, Joseph, Ellerbe, Spillman, Baker, and possibly Cosby as well.

Prediction: of the 12 draft picks, no more than four will still be in the league after their rookie contracts expire.

Unlike a Cowboys' season, in life, there may not be a next year.

by Reno Cowboy on Apr 27, 2009 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fair comment

Some of these guys are projects. I guess my point is this. Since we have a pretty nice group of starters, I wish they would have taken more chances with project guys. Many guys on the list are Boom/Bust guys. It just seems that a team like Dallas that is in pretty good position would take a few more chances. Maybe they hit on two draftees that become great players. Seems like they took the safe route and took guys who have a good chance at being average. That would be a good strategy if you are Detroit and have 20+ holes to fill on your team.

by TCBinNYC on Apr 28, 2009 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Correct me, I may be wrong

but the only BOOM or BUST guy that I feel we drafted was Mike Mickens, CB CIN

Boom – he led the nation is INTs; one of the premier pass coverage defenders in college football, but fell to the 7th Round because…..

…..Bust – he is injured and had to be pulled out of the Senior Bowl, as he experienced swelling in the knee during practices in Mobile. He also was unable to work out at the Scouting Combine in February.

by BishopWest on Apr 28, 2009 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

did you mistype?

“plenty of talented guys who could compete on this roster”

You realize this squad went 13-3 two years ago and filled the Pro Bowl on both sides of the line. Those guys you listed were passed on by 32 teams in over 210 chances. I actually DON’T think any of them can compete seriously for starting time, and, i don’t know that they are plenty of talented guys. but you may be right.

by Joey2zs on Apr 27, 2009 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never said they were competing for "starting" time

But, yes, I do think some of these guys could have competed for a roster spot. For example, a NT like Chris Baker. All we have behind Ratliff is Junior Siavii who will turn 31 this season and hasnt played in an NFL game since 2005. Does that make you feel real comfortable? Chris Baker could at least compete for that roster spot. If he didnt make it, then at least we would know he’s got nothing. Joel Bell, Roger Allen, Alex Boone, and Gerald Codogan are all projects at O Line, but should be able to push McQuistan and Free. A little competition would do those guys good and the FAs are much cheaper should one make the team.

You can look at the records of 13-3 and 9-7 and say they have talent, and I agree. But the back end of the roster is razor thin. There are several guys that would not get much attention if waived. You can always improve the back-end. That’s what I hope they have done with the draft, I just wish they would have taken a shot with a few more guys.

I'd like to know...

…Why we pick up Steven McGee, a below average QB at A&M in the 4th round? There are at least 2 quarterbacks in the same conference that we could have gotten as FA’s and that includes Harrell. I hate wasting picks on people who sucked before. What makes us think they’re not going to suck against better players?

by Big50 on Apr 27, 2009 3:32 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He didn't suck...

that badly dude.

He was in a bad situation, running an option offense that rarely allowed him to pass.

Believe me, I am NOT a McGee homer. I hate Texas A&M too, but I thought when McGee did get to pass, he played well.

He was hurt dude.

And he started most of his career there. Mike Sherman came in and wanted to install his guy.

Afterwards they proceeded to go out and be the worst team in the Big 12 South.

He had a winning record at Texas A&M

Yes, many QB’s have had winning records. That does not make them good. Look at Tech’s last 4 QB’s. They all had winning records, none of them are worth a 4th round pick.

McGee is a class act...

and I’m not even an Aggie saying this. Even though Franchione put him in a bad offense he was always loyal to him and never said anything publicly about him.

Maybe so, I hope he ends up being a stud for us…somehow, but I still don’t like the 4th round pick

by Big50 on Apr 27, 2009 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i didn't mean

to be an asshole, and everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but McGee was a horrible fit in Franchione’s offense and yet he tried to make the best of it and said all the right things while at A&M, even when the entire Aggie nation was trying to run his coach (who completely wasted his talents) out of town. It is unfair and incorrect to think of him as a backup at a mediocre program. No QB had more to prove entering the spring scouting cycle than McGee and by the end he was thought of as the fourth best QB in the draft in most circles. That probably says something about what he showed this spring.

My concerns about McGee have more to do with his durability than his physical abilities or character.

I disagree.....

Franchione did not use McGee properly at A&M as well as M. Bennett. Coming out of high school McGee and Jordan Shipley set all kinds of passing records nationally. He’s very raw but he can be groomed.

by texstar on Apr 27, 2009 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I seriously doubt McGee would make waivers to the scout team

if they tried to slip him on there. That could be Rudy Carpenter’s job. But I think they’ll end up carrying 3 QBs on the roster and grooming him to take over as backup once Kitna’s gone in couple years.

Yeah, and it may even help Romo to be a young mentor. Garrett and Wilson will be focused on mechanics more with this group than last year's.

Bollinger wasn’t brought in until after TC if I remember correctly, and the only other arm was Bartel. Romo was focused on “finishing” while Brad was Brad.

I think it will be good for Tony to have somebody under his wing, while he is continuing his progression as well. Overall, this is a great fit for McGee.

You know why I like our draft?

Wade Phillips said that DeAngelo Smith, our fifth round pick, is a “violent football player” and “really gets after ’em.” The same thing can be said about almost all our picks. Even McGee is considered a tough guy and just a good football player. Heck, even our kicker can outrun and outlift the USC LB’s taken. We got a lot tougher and some good football players from this draft. Maybe none of these guys start this year or next but at least every practice will be tough and competitive.

O ya, and our special teams should be MUCH improved.

Add the ND Fullback to the list… the guy has a legitimate chance to make the roster…

Which brings me to another point – I’m hoping and even expecting 6-8 of these guys to come out of training camp. Is that number unrealistic? I’ve heard 4 from people; hopefully that is conservative. One note here: The Cowboys Draft team probably didn’t spend much time thinking about the very top 1st-round guys. That allowed them MORE TIME to look at the depth in the later rounds. That time could only help.

3 69 Williams, J. OLB Western Illinois - He’s almost a lock to make the roster = THAT’S 1
3 75 Brewster, R. OT Ball State -
Looks like we’re bringing in several UDFAs – not surprising, they’re all “projects” – hopefully, Brewster AND one of the UDFAs make it! I’d settle for ONE here? = THAT’S 2
4 101 McGee, S. QB Texas A&M - He’ll be battling with the UDFAs for a spot = THAT’S 3
4 110 Butler, V. DE Oregon State -
Good chance either Butler or Williams – or BOTH make it = THAT’S 4
4 120 Williams, B. DE Texas Tech
5 143 Smith, D. CB Cincinnati — for argument’s sake, let’s say we find 2 new guys out of all the secondary prospects = THAT’S 6
5 166 Hamlin, M. FS Clemson
5 172 Buehler, D. K Southern California — I’m betting they keep him, if only to avoid the hand-wringing fans and press = THAT’S 7
6 197 Hodge, S. SS TCU -
6 208 Phillips, J. TE Virginia -
Interesting prospect, good blocker… easily could make it = 8???
7 227 Mickens, M. CB Cincinnati -
7 229 Johnson, M. WR Oklahoma -
I like our current 5 guys, but can’t wait to see this guy play

I would say a better over / under would be about 7

the question then is

who from last year’s 53-man roster are most likely out of here to make room for the new guys?

Possibilities:

Offfense
Anderson
Free
Hurd
McQuistan
Proctor
Stanback

Defense
Ball
Battle
Bowen
Brown
Carpenter
Dixon
Ellis
Rogers
Watkins

ST:
Paulescu

Nice assessment

Plenty of room for upgrades.

by hiafex on Apr 27, 2009 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Its not hard to find several who's time is probably limited

Ball, Battle, Brown, and Rogers will face some serious challenge from the draftees.

Remember what Stephen said in the presser yesterday. Drafting all of these guys gives us an excellent opportunity to, at the very least, replace current roster spots with comparable talent at a lower cost, thus reducing the salary cap impact.

I think Watkins, Ellis, and Carpenter could also be set free if we see the prospects even show a hint of the ability to provide comparable productivity.

What would you give as a GM for Watkins, Ellis or Carp?

Not saying nothing, just curious

I'm no good at making valuations like that

but they should be worth something for a team with the right needs

The Cowboys were probably higher on BOTH these guys BEFORE last year

Neither really had the wow factor this year

Bowen and Dixon should be in the DL rotation

And don’t forget Hatcher.

I like Dixon

He has only been on the team a year. Interesting personal background too.

Unlike a Cowboys' season, in life, there may not be a next year.

Definitely rooting for Dixon to make it

He suffered an injury before pre-season, so we didn’t get a good look at him, but the D-line coach was impressed by his ability in camp.

I haven't had much of a chance to pat attention to Free Agency, this years dra, or the URFA signings.

Thanks for all the posts everybody. They’ve helped me keep up. I don’t follow college football so most of you are way out ahead of me on this stuff. Even though I really don’t know much about any of this years pickups, I do like reading about them. Thanks again.

It's the Quarterback Stupid

Tex is just glad to see the Cowboys finally addressing the quarterback position. Many have tried to write off Romo’s blunders as youth, but a realistic evaluation reveals that the beleaguered quarterback is now on the downside of his career – at the same age Aikman had already won three Super Bowls.

Now, come November when football becomes a distraction to Romo’s pursuit of John Mayer’s leftovers, the Cowboys have options. The Simpsons era, which may go down as the most disappointing five years in the history of the franchise, now has a foreseeable end date. Tex raises a glass of Calvados to McGee and Carpenter… Here’s to the future!

+1

if my memory serves me, Romo played behind an injured line last year, his second full year. In his first, he set many Dallas Cowboy offensive records.

You’re entitled to your opinion, but my opinion is that you couldn’t be more wrong.

The Brian Stewart of Quarterbacks

There are no excuses for Romo quitting in Philadelphia last year. There are no excuses for Romo running off to Mexico the week prior to a playoff game, the year before. And, there are no excuses for Buckner pulling off one of the greatest chokes, see Seattle Slip, in the history of sports, the year prior to that. He is what he is… the best quarterback in the NFL never to win a playoff game.

What will the beleaguered QB do for an encore? Tex doesn’t want to find out. He’s the worst big game player since Danny White, and has the IQ of Jessica Simpson. His physique has ballooned since the check cashed, and football isn’t a priority to the Mai-Tai sipping playboy. Time for the franchise to move on. It took two years for Tex to expose Brian Stewart as the most unqualified coordinator in the NFL, and now the Cowboys are finally coming around on the quarterback position.

How do so many people not enjoy the Tex wit and wisdom

There’s nothing I’d like more than watching Tony Romo raise the Lombardi over his head but I also admit to getting a little excited when I see a new Tex post. He throws it all out there for us. You don’t have to agree but you sure as heck should appreciate.

actually Romo's IQ is 130

I think it’s obvious Tex has the IQ of Jessica, although I think that would be an insult to her actually, LOL!

My kind of OL

Any guy that has “mauler” in his description gets a second look from me. I can’t think of a better trait for an offensive lineman.

Where is our big fat DT?

I really don’t get this. Whenever I watch our defense, I feel like we’re wasting Jay Ratliff’s talents. He is not a true NT. I had NT ranked as our highest need going into the draft. Not only did we not draft one, we didn’t even bring one in as a free agent!

Am I crazy here? Wouldn’t it make our defense soooo much better if we had a 320+ lb space-eater to take up two blockers and allow Ratliff to rush the passer? It seems so glaring to me that this is what is preventing us from having a dominant defense.

by bewareofdware on Apr 28, 2009 9:52 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I wanted a NT, too

But I don’t feel that Ratliff’s talents are being “wasted” at all.

2005 – 4 tackles
2006 – 18 tackles
2007 – 30 tackles
2008 – 51 tackles

He is getting bettter and better every year. Plus, he brings the heat (7.5 sacks last year) from the middle, up in the QBs face.

If he was totally replaced with a big 320 lb NT, we would most likely loose pressure on the QB from the NT position.

by BishopWest on Apr 28, 2009 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ratliff has also expressed his desire to stay as a nose, and not play more than one role

but he would do whatever was required for the team.

Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!

by cowboy78 on Apr 28, 2009 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love Ratliff

I’m not saying that Ratliff is not a good NT. It just seems when I watch the defense play together that our line would be much stronger with a Shaun Rogers-type fat guy in the middle and Ratliff on an end. I think Ratliff could use his athleticism more and would create more problems for blocking schemes.

Right now, Ratliff sometimes draws double-teams and there is no one else on the line that can beat their blockers. The proverbial “fat NT” draws double teams just because of his size. Now Ratliff would be freed up to create more havoc.

by bewareofdware on Apr 28, 2009 11:53 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I see your point,

but Ratliff got 7.5 sacks up the middle in SPITE of drawing double-teams – no fat guy is going to be able to do that. I like the pressure UP THE MIDDLE that Ratliff brings.

We have Ware off the corner; we can bring LBs outside, even CBs, and Ss from the edge.

What I like most about Rat is the pressure straight up the middle even when facing dbl teams.

In agreement with you – I think the fat guy would give Rat some relief and be a big body on RUN PLAYS.
