A Shot at the 53 - Post Draft

The draft has come and gone and we have 12+ new players to factor into our roster.  I wanted to take a stab at what the 53 man roster might look like.

Star-divide

QB 3 - Romo, Kitna, McGee

RB 3 - Barber, Felix, Choice

FB 1 - Anderson

WR 5 - Williams, Crayton, Austin, Hurd, Stanback

TE 3 - Witten, Bennett, Roster fight between Hannah/Phillips

OL - 9  Flo, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, Columbo, Proctor, Brewster, 2 spot roster fight between Holland, McQuistan, and Free

Total Offense - 24

DL 6 - Rat, Igor, Spears, Hatcher, Bowen, Siavii

OLB 4- Ware, Spencer, Brandon Williams, Victor Butler.

ILB 4 - James, Brookings, Jason WIlliams, Hodge

CB  4- Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, Ball

S 4 - Ken Hamlin, Sensabaugh, Michael Hamlin, DeAngelo Smith

ST - 4 Folk, Buehler, McBriar, Loudaceur.  You could almost move Hodge here from ILB.  He's here for ST.

There are 3 open roster spots.  It could be the 10th OL, 5th CB in Mickens, Carpenter, 5th safety in Watkins, or another special teams LB like Rogers/Octavian.

Actually, I think Carpenter makes it so we don't have all rookies at back up LB.

I'd like to see Ellis stay around fofr his passrush and teaching ability for the young guys.  But I have a feeling he's gone.

Manuel Johnson sure looks like a practice squad guy.

What say you, everyone?

Mickens will beat out Ball

I'm an Illini guy

and I think Mickens will beat out Ball. I had no idea why the Boys drafted him out of Illinios and I didn’t think he’d make the team at all. So I’m proud that he’s played a couple years with the Boys, but I think Mickens has much more upside.

at FB maybe this Scwapp guy can beat out Cricket. I like Cricket, but I also know it is possible to upgrade there.

on online I’d switch Holland and Proctor.

and I agree Mickens probably makes it.

+1

I’d love to see Schwapp in there competing for that FB spot… the guys a friggin’ monster. I like Mickens too, but I think he may need to beef up some. Seems like he almost bounces off ball carriers; vicious though.

Hooah.

Safety
Tim MacMahon, of The Dallas Morning News, reports the Dallas Cowboys plan to have CB DeAngelo Smith and CB Alan Ball prepare to play safety and cornerback. The team wants to create depth through position flexibility in the secondary.

great....that's the new FS procedure nowadays...said all along we should be drafting physical CB's to play this deep coverage Safety everyone was a adamant about selecting first in the draft

this one happens to return punts as well….

coverage skills:

Smith > Delmas

special teams impact :

Smith > Delmas

physicality to support run:

Smith = Delmas

not bad value…eh ?

by My_2_Cents on Apr 28, 2009 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

disagree..Delmas is a heat seeking misile

and has more physicality to support the run.

Proctor makes it...

not because he’s a better guard than Holland but because he’s our only backup center.

Well, sorta-kinda

the long snapper is on the roster, too = Ladouceur

by BishopWest on Apr 28, 2009 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I counted him the ST group, though I mis-spelled his name.

I don’t think he’d be an every day center except in extreme emergency.

by Ridgelake on Apr 28, 2009 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea

but i doubt we want to risk him getting hurt.

by foyesboys on Apr 28, 2009 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The other wildcard is

DE Marcus Dixon. The problem is that I don’t see who he beats out. And since we’re “losing” 2 roster spots with QB3 and K2, I have a hard time seeing them keeping a 7th DL, especially one who likely doesnt play special teams.

by Ridgelake on Apr 28, 2009 7:33 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Compared to last year, we're really not losing a spot to another QB

Remember last season we carried Johnson and Bollinger, so really were only losing 1 roster spot to Buehler.

+1 Ridge.....Dixon will be on practive squad again....after next season Spears & Bowen may not be back...

Dixon needs more time, if he sticks at all…….I only see 6 DL on the roster…

This training camp is going to be

one of the most competitive we’ve seen in awhile. Wade’s new “Get Tough” plan wasn’t for him to get tougher, it was for him to get tougher players. Every practice will be intense, our starters may be set; but every backup should be on alert. You better bring your “A” game to practice, because these rookies may not be super talented, but they come to play football every day. That’s why I like this draft, tough, smart football players always should have a spot on this team, and most of the guys we drafted fit that description.

If you don’t look at the names in our draft and instead look at what our scouts think they bring to the team; more toughness (both mental and physical), less mental mistakes, and turning Special Teams from a weakness to a strength, I think we all would be happy. Hopefully our scouts are right.

+1 TK...I agree...many non starting spots are up for grabs....that makes for one hell of a training camp...I might even have to go check it out..

don’t discount the several urfa brought into camp as well….some of those OL guys are pretty damn good……I only wish they had brought in some more, or better ones that were out there….

by My_2_Cents on Apr 28, 2009 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, come on there is no one in camp at this point who has ....

enough beef to back up both tackle spots like Mc Q, Unless free has added a lot of weight in muscle! That’s just the SAD fact!

by bad knees on Apr 28, 2009 8:24 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

10 Db

will be on the roster. since there is not any real good young backups on the OL, i see only keeping 9. either dixon makes his way on the roster or carp.

of course injuries always have a way of changing things don’t they.

by mo on Apr 28, 2009 8:49 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Mickens has better odds than Brown....

Mickens’ spot totally depends on the health of his knee. If he’s got the movement he had pre-injury, he’s darn near a lock. The guy reportedly was in discussions as a first rounder pre-injury.

Brown’s odds seem rather long. He was given a lot of opportunity this past year. He made very few, if any, plays. Not that you want your FS making many plays in general. But his totals were ridiculously low for someone actually on the field.

For someone as fast as he is

He was always coming into view AFTER the ballcarrier was taken down

My 53

QB 3 – Romo, Kitna, McGee — easy

RB 3 – Barber, Felix, Choice — easiest

FB 1 – Anderson — will get competition, but should survive b/c he’s well rounded

WR 5 – Williams, Crayton, Austin — definite. Hurd and Stanback are not set. Not sure the 7th rounder will press them, but a UFA might. I still like his potential, but one more ding and Stanback’s gone.

TE 3 – Witten, Bennett, roster fight between Hannah/Phillips

OL – 9 Flo, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, Columbo — set. Proctor gets the edge as backup center. Brewster next most likely as the new kid, who will take McQ’s swing role in 2010. McQuistan might be next most likely to survive b/c he can cover G/T on game days. Free survives if he’s still Flo’s best backup. To me, that means Holland is likely the odd guy out. But I think it’s fairly fluid here. If Holland really proved himself at guard, he could slide into Kosier’s starting spot, with Kosier being the super sub. Since he could play center, Proctor could be traded. Not likely, but possible.

Total Offense – 24

DL 6 – Rat, Igor, Spears — set. Hatcher, Bowen and Siavii likely. Dixon might supplant Bowen or Hatcher (who has generally underachieved). And I’ll bet we’re on the lookout for NTs.

OLB 5- Ware, Spencer, Ellis — set. Brandong Williams, Victor Butler duke it out with Justin Rogers for two slots. Ellis is already paid for this year, with his money coming off next season. No reason to cut him now. If the rooks show better pass rushing ability and can tackle or block on special teams, they’ll beat out Rogers.

ILB 5 – James, Brookings, Carpenter — set. Jason Williams and Hodge near locks. You can hate on Bobby C, but we aren’t going with two late-round rookies backing up Brookings, who’s in his 30s. Hodge is certain to make the team as a special teamer, and Jason Williams is also a lock as our first pick.

CB 5- Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, Ball, Mickens. Only issue here is Mickens’ health. D Smith will play some here too, just as Ball will play some safety.

S 4 – Ken Hamlin, Sensabaugh, Michael Hamlin, DeAngelo Smith. This competition will be stiff. Watkins, Tra Battle, Courtney Brown, and perhaps others will be fighting for jobs here, but I expect Dallas to go with cheaper guys that they have locked up longer. That’s why they kept Alan Ball over Ogletree last year.

Total Defense — 25

ST – 4 Folk, Buehler, McBriar, Loudaceur.
