Introducing Stephen Hodge

I've seen a few posts asking about Stephen Hodge, and his 6th round status leaves most writers justified with a one-two line snipit about him. As a cowboy fan and TCU alumni, I can't help to think we found a diamond in the rough with this pick. As such, I will oblige myself to do a quick write up on him for the BTB fans.

Star-divide

Hodge is a QB turned DB out of Tatum, TX. In HS he posted two consecutive seasons with 1,500+ rushing and 1,500+ passing, and 40 TDs. Then he met Gary Patterson and became a defensive, man-eating machine at SS.

Once at TCU he started all 12 games as a true freshman in 2005. In 2006 he became a bigger part in the game plan, mainly as a reserve safety and special teams ace. He recorded 5 special teams tackles TWICE in 2006, and 25 of his 30 tackles were solo stops. Then he broke out in 2007 with a 2nd-Team All MWC selection. He led the nation in sacks by a DB with 8, and 12 of his 57 tackles were for losses. He was also 2nd on the team in pass deflections.

Last year he was a SportingNews preseason all american, and finished 1st-Team All MWC. Dave Campbell's Texas Football named him the best safety in Texas. He placed 3rd on one of the top defenses in the nation with 81 tackles. He also recorded 10 TFLs, 2 forced fumbles, and averaged 24 yards on 4 kick returns. He led the team with 23 special teams tackles, 6 of them coming in one game against San Diego State. He was Defensive MVP in the Poinsetta Bowl victory against Boise State, recording 11 tackles, a sack, and the game-winning interception.

He is 6'0", and played around 215-225 at TCU, but he was at 235 for the combine, and might even bulk up to 245 if the boys are serious about converting him to LB. He runs a 4.5 forty, so he is somewhere between mediocre speed for a safety or speedy gonzalez at LB. He is very controlled, finds the ball, and hits hard

This guy is smart, motivated, level headed, and a beast of a tackler with polamalu-like instincts at finding the ball. In 4 years of watching him play, I dont remember him giving up too much down field, and was at least servicable in pass coverage.

He isnt going to deliver interceptions, but he will be a great asset to special teams. And on the defensive side of the ball, he could end up being what Roy Williams could never live up to. I see him as a hybrid of Keith Davis/Roy Williams/Brian Dawkins.

Expect this kid to make the team. Dont expect him to immediately contribute on D. Do expect him to make some bone crushing stops on special teams. Don't expect him to solve our coverage problems at safety. Do expect to see him get involved with sub packages and play in inside the box safety or pass coverage LB. Do expect this guy to be around the league for a long time.

Thanks

Good write up. I’ve been checking too and this confirms everything I read. The never ending motor was mentioned often as well. Looking forward to seeing this young man.
Thanks again good information.

I wonder

Do you think he will compete for the nickel (3rd down) linebacker position or be a SS back up as well as ST contributor?

I could see him filling all of the above roles. I think he definitely plays every down on special teams. We look to have some decent depth at LB, and we drafted 3. We all know we needed some safety help, but we only drafted two. So my guess is that wade and co. like him at safety, but want to experiment with him as an LB too.

When did you graduate from TCU?

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

Great post.

I like the look of this guy too. Seems to play with a lot of agression and energy. Should at worst be an ace special teamer and potentially more.

not to be a wise guy but
Once at TCU he started all 12 games as a true freshman in 2005. In 2006 he became a bigger part in the game plan, mainly as a reserve safety and special teams ace.

So he played more as a reserve?

Should have said "played in all 12 games"

He saw action in all 12 games of his freshman season. Then his sophomore campaign, he stared working his way into a bigger roll on defense (as a reserve safety), while cementing himself as a special teams standout.

He didnt become a full time starter, untill midway through his junior year.

this guy was clearly drafted to become a big time contibuter on special teams

his size does not really fit into a 3-4 scheme but special teams wise he could be a good one

Yeah,

Hodge’s 4.58 at 234 pounds was as good as the other rookie Safety Hamlin who was about 4.57 at 214. If there intention is to move Hodge to ILB as they’ve claimed he’s plenty fast for that spot.

by Luke. on Apr 29, 2009 7:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Hodge will certainly have to be a speciality player

Too small to play ILB every down, I see him competing with Williams for that nickel spot this year.

Can’t see Barbie making the team as a result, we really should trade him to a 4-3 team for a draft pick.

Wade's 3-4 has accommodated smaller inside backers before.

Donnie Edwards played inside with Wade 3 years at San Diego at 224 pounds and had over 140 tackles each year. But I agree that right now these guys are competing for the nickle backer spot. I do think though both Williams and Hodge can probably put on a bit more weight if they need to and I think the plan would be for one of them to take over for Brooking full-time in a year or two.

And yeah I had the same thought when I heard they wanted Hodge at ILB – Bye bye Bobby.

He even looks like keith Davis in this picture!

I’ve heard allot of what you just said over the past 3 days, Sounds like a K.D. clone but more athletic. Im excited to see how he develops.

Hopefully

He doesn’t attract lead like Keith did.

Here's something funny:

Manny Johnson and Hodge were high school QB rivals, with Manny bombing Hodge’s 2004 Tatum team for 7 TDs. Manny and the Gilmer Buckeyes went on to win the 3A state title that year, and Tatum won the title the next year, although Hodge had already gone on to TCU then.

Tom Grieve is my hero.

There was an article about him in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram

the other day. It mentioned that Wade has talked about him mainly playing ILB in our 3-4, something that he has never done. Despite his inexperience, it said that during one-on-one drills, where apparently the receiver has the advantage over the defender, he didn’t allow one completion. All the coaches were extremely impressed with his coverage skills in this shut-out, might still have the article somewhere around here and if anybody wants, I can get it out for exact quotes.
