Cowboys set some pre-draft visits
The ever-resourceful Todd Archer writes that the Cowboys have lined up some pre-draft visits with local prospects coming in on the 10th, and the national guys beginning on the 15th. Three quarterbacks and three safeties top the list. Go read Todd's article for more info on the guys, but here are the names to chew on:
QB: Stephen McGee, Chase Daniel, Tom Brandstater
DB: Mike Hamlin, Louis Delmas, Darcel McBath, Jarius Byrd, Bradley Fletcher
LB: Lawrence Sidbury, Jason Williams
TE: Anthony Hill, James Casey
WR: Patrick Turner

I wish I'd seen a little beef at NT on that list. Tank Johnson has left and is talking to the Bengals, so Jay Ratliff needs a little help on the interior. Maybe our new DE, Igor Olshansky, can motivate one of our own to jump up his game. Wade Phillips discussed Olshansky's relationship with potential backup nose tackle, Junior Siavii, who was picked just behind Drago in the 2004 draft (Round 2, pick 36):
"They have a close relationship," Phillips said. "They work hard together. Both were high draft choices coming out of Oregon and they push each other and compete with each other with everything they did in college. Igor talked about, I'm going to get with Junior and we're going to do this and we're going to do that and Junior says, Well, I can out do him. So I think it'll be a fun thing for us to have them."
Coach Phillips on Olshansky:
"He's still a young player, one of the strongest if not the strongest guys in the league. And he plays hard. He learned to play hard. Hopefully I helped him with some of that when he was young. But he plays very hard and he's a big man that can move."

Ya know...
… I have a really good feeling about Olshansky, and the former Phillips players that were brought in. I think WP will light a fire under ’em, and utilize ’em in the best possible scenarios that nobody else has been able to, except for him.
Hooah.
And super cheaper--saving them almost 3 mil next year.
In fact, the entire $$$ breakdown is favorable for the Boys.

If the Cowboys don't address DL fairly early
in the draft, then you have to think they really like Siavii.
In Romo we Trust
Either that or
the DL’s in the draft are worthless. Either way, I can’t wait to see how this plays out. The closer it gets the more I feel like a kid on Christmas morning.
When did I become a Cowboy fan? When my mom told me I was.
draft is definitely NFL fans equilivant to Christmas morning
By far and away my favorite day of the year.
In Romo we Trust
Siavii is 30 years old if he hasn't made a roster by now
I’m very cynical about his ability to contribute
has he ever stuck around on a team?

The DLine class really looks thin this year.
When you talk about Raji being a top 15 player, and maybe only Tyson Jackson or Peria Jerry going in the first, that is a thin group. Let’s wait till next year and let Tim Anderson fight it out with the big Samoan.
If neither of those guys pan out, there is always Grady Jackson or Jimmy Kennedy—super old and super disappointing, respectively.

I'd really like that Richmond player Lawrence Sidbury
I’m not spending the time to look at film, etc, but his measurables make him look like 9/10ths as awesome as Demarcus Ware
by AustonianAggie on Apr 3, 2009 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions
I for one stand by my hyperbole
D Ware coming out as 250lbs, 4.5 and 2 inches taller – it’s arbitrary but going with speed to weight ratio:
4.5/250 = 0.01800
Anthony Spencer 4.7/260 = 0.01807
Sidbury is 4.6/266 = 0.01729
I don’t know if anyone uses these ratios anymore, I’ve read that Landry used some system like this to rate players in a spread sheet. These numbers suggest Sidbury has the goods to be an absolute impact player… obviously there’s more to scouting than these stats

LB requires a little bit more
Last year the Jets drafted Vernon Gholston and absolute pphysical freak, problem is he plays like Carp
Wasn't that line invented to describe Carpenter??
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.
the larger the number the worse right?
Bobby Carpenter 4.67/256 = 0.01824

Dont count on Siavil....I'm sure NT will be addressed in the draft at some point.
They might also be planning on using Spears more at NT.
I hope Spears gets some more looks there.
That would allow them to open up their draft boards to DEs.

lol at McGee and Daniel
Neither are no where near pro QBs
McGee will be drafted higher than you think
a lot of teams, a lot of good teams, like New England, like the guy.
Daniel seems too wild to me, but I would not complain if Dallas picked
McGee in the middle rounds.
I'd rather have McGee then Daniels
McGee was held back by his offensive scheme.
McDaniels hit that wall, AND he’s a jackass.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
+1
Daniels is going to have a hard time adjusting to the NFL from Mizzou where he was in shotgun formation with a deeper drop (almost looked like a punter). He’s too short, and he’s no Doug Flutie.
McGee seems to be moving up mock draft boards in the last few weeks.
Feb. 27 -- Veteran free agency signing period begins. Trading period begins.
April 25-26 -- NFL Draft
We might
want to look at McGee with pick 117. He might take a while to develope , but he would imo . NE will probably get him in the 3rd round.
or look at brandstater with 156
hes got everything you want in a qb and would be able to groom like romo was.

McGee never had a chance in college because of his coach
before Fran tried ape-ing the Florida offense, McGee had seasons where he threw 12 tds and 1 int – serious ball control, he had a live arm as a youngin, but A&M wanted to run an offense like NEB of the 90s

Yep I agree....
And as you all I know, I have a deep hatred for the Aggies.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
Raji tested positive...
for Marijuana durning the combine. I wonder how that will affect his positioning in the first round? Big drop?
They never said
what it was. I jumped to the same conclusion, but if it turns out to be Robitusin, I will be embarassed and owe a big apology to Nick L.
When did I become a Cowboy fan? When my mom told me I was.
I doubt it
Warren Sapp, mister. He was rated as highly as Raji in ‘95, tested positive
for weed, and dropped to 12. I’m sure Tampa Bay sent out Christmas cards
for years to all the teams that passed him over.
Raf...I didn't mean to imply...
out of the first round. But even though Sapp panned out, he lost major coin in the beginning of his career. I just wondered if that would affect Raji the same way.
I would think teams are more cautious about things like that
They said he tested positive in feb at the combine, and in his senior year at BC, so I still think that its pretty significant. Also, I think teams are more reluctant to invest big time guaranteed money into these players with question marks, espcially since Goodell has taken over and his tendency to have a heavy hand. I really think Raji might drop to mid first or early 20s. However, Galloway was saying yesterday that there were 3 prominent names that the boys had that they would not draft, which also included Percy Harvin, who also failed his combine drug test. However, Raji would be a monster that we need at NT.
Jerry mentioned last year when talking about Tank Johnson and Pacman Jones
that neither one of them had drug issues. I think the team no longer tolerates players
with drug issues.
They got burned by Leon Lett — badly. I also think Kareem Larrimore and another high
CB
right
I’ve repressed all thoughts on Quincy for some reason.
...
another high CB draftee failed tests and busted out.
Drafting is high risk enough as it is, without adding that to the mixture.
Why
doesn’t Mark Stepnoski do a seminar on how to avoid testing positive for herb?
Maybe these guys deserve to drop, not because they take a toke, but because they are too dim to know how to pass these tests.
Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.
That's part of it Oskie.
I don’t really care what they do at their house. They could have a 100 hookers on speed dial, and 5 dealers living in the basement. The problem happens when they get caught at it. If you are willing to put your career in jeapordy to take a toke then I say if you get popped once you are gone. These guys are paid millions of dollars to play a game that any one of us would give our first born to play . I avoid drugs like the plague to keep a job that doesn’t even pay 1/1000 of what these guys get. Why in the world would I want to have the team that I love have one on the roster let alone draft one?
When did I become a Cowboy fan? When my mom told me I was.
All the more reason JJT is a knucklehead
He recently penned an article in which he gave JJ 2 weeks before he moved on matt jones. there was of course the “arkansas” connection.
This after JJ has made it very clear he will risk moves on players which a checkered past as long as the player has unquestionable talent and NO DRUGS.
The more i see articles like the that, the more i wonder if guys like JJT ever actually listen to what JJ says or if they are simply sitting in the room and texting or something while he is talking
"Arkansas" connection...
I’ve never gotten that.
Hasn’t Jerry only had two players EVER from Arkansas on his team?
Hamlin and Felix right?
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
Clint Stoerner
But he was an undrafted FA. Felix is the ONLY arkansas player drafted in the jones era, yet every year at least one pundit points out the “arkansas connection” with jerry jones and a prospective draftee or FA signing.
3 players...
in 20 years isn’t really that much of a connection haha.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
No way her gets past the Bronco's at 18
He would be perfect for their new 3-4 NT
no drop at all....the scouts new of the postitive test at the Combine
he will still be a top 10 pick….

Nothing ever happened to that young DE from the Texans either…Okoye?

Didn’t get busted for pot though.
They just asked him a question if he had used it before and he said yes.
But your right, it won’t impact it that much.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
I have no problem with that.
If he comes out and says yeah, I smoked some, but I don’t now and tests clean. Then I can let the boys will be boys rule take effect. If you are not forthright about it and try to hide it and get busted, I have to wonder just how commited you are to staying off of it. In other words what are the chances I’m not going to have you available when I need you to play?
When did I become a Cowboy fan? When my mom told me I was.
Refresh my memory
What’s the story with Siavii? No career stats since 2005 with KC (NFL.com)? I really don’t know why anyone would even bring up his name in conversation as being a player we would think would help. He looks like a guy who had some potential coming out of college and busted. Am I missing something?
by StillHateTheGiants on Apr 3, 2009 9:29 AM CDT reply actions
He started playing football late; didn't get to Oregon until he was 25.
Olshansky’s signing really is going to help out his career. They really were chums as Ducks together.
Siavii befriends Ukrainian-born teammate Igor Olshansky, a defensive lineman and already a touted pro prospect. Olshansky is a weightlifting fanatic; Junior becomes serious for the first time about the weight room. He becomes serious about film study.

I doubt it
Wade isn’t going to say he’s a camp body, but that’s what he was last year.
He was fourth at NT on the camp depth chart, at least to my eyes.
Junior hasn’t made an NFL roster in two years. With the demand for d-linemen
you would think he could at least get a job as a backup nose tackle somewhere,
but he hasn’t.
And all of the sudden, he's number 2.
Maybe they feel that they can do something with these high draft pick busts. Being a former 2nd rounder and with Tim Anderson being a former 3rd, perhaps they aren’t too impressed with the potential of the guys in this year’s draft; and instead are trying to bleed the rock with guys who might just have some potential left.
That Anderson guy is huge (6’3" 325) and a pretty good collegiate wrestler, to boot. Those type of skills always help in the trenches.

He's #2
not because he should be, but more because Dallas doesn’t have true NT on it’s roster.
I agree with Grizz; not having a NT on that list is another instance of Winnie drinking his own bath water and failing to watch the tape of how Rat wore down in games late last year. He gives up so many pounds to the guards and centers that he is supposed to occupy that it’s an injury waiting to happen, and when it does, say bye bye to the season and to Winnie the Coach.
As for the list, I have a feeling McBath could be a Cowboy come May.

"Winnie" cracks me up
That’s neck and neck with “Thong” in my book. I wish I was creative enough to come up with nicknames like those. I think there should be a thread of just all-time great names.

Tom Brandstater
was Mel Kiper sleeper Senior QB. He struggled his senior season under his new OC. He had a good year his junior year, too bad his OC decided to bolt for Alabama. I wouldn’t mind Brandstater in the late rounds.

over at BGN they had a cowboy bashing thread and i couldnt resist. Bascially they were sick of cowboys always saying how many rings you have as their whole argument so they came up with a list of “comeback”. Raf, what do you think about Terrance Taylor at NT?
He should be available in the 3rd or 4th. Goes 6’0 319 and FFToolbox notes:
“Aside from being a top football recruit out of high school, Taylor was also a three time state power lifting champion in Michigan, and the undefeated heavyweight state wrestling champion as a senior. Taylor’s training as a wrestler has helped his football tremendously,”. For the full review go to http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?prospect_id=1646
If he’s been a wrestler, he should have a non-stop motor and have the mentality of a good NT who doesn’t mind doing the grunt work while others get to make the plays. Being a power lifter indicates strength but also the willingness to put in the hours to achieve that strength. Might also be a challenge to other linemen to lift more.
Being only 6’0 indicates he will not meet a lot of the ideal size requirements that teams use and should be available later in the draft.
I like him
but I like every wide-body that comes along. The Rat needs some beefy rotation buddies.

When Plax was inactive last year
Hixon became Eli’s “go to” target and actually had better numbers than Plax.
The reason the Giants stumbled late in the year was due to the injury to B.Jacobs.
The MAIN reason the Giants released Plax is that they are fine without him. Plax only averaged 3.5 catches per game for about 45 yards. He no longer draws double-teams and is not the MAJOR THREAT he used to be.
LB Kevin Burnett to the North County Times
“What other choice did I have but to leave? They brought in another linebacker and then they tried to sign me, which to me was a slap in the face. On top of that, they wanted me to sign the same kind of deal, and I wasn’t willing to do that.”
“They pigeonholed me into a certain role. There’s no doubt about that,” Burnett said. “It was frustrating, which is why I’m looking forward to this fresh start.”
Umm, kevin. That role you were pigeon-holed into was something you excelled at. It was a way for you to finally get on the field (something YOU have struggled with). Lots of dallas fans stuck up for you, you showed up with a ton of speed and finally found a role, excelling as the nickle LB. I imagine most fans held no ill will at you leaving. You wanted to try a shot at starting somewhere else and you’re from cali, so you signed with SD, even though they clearly dont see you as a long term starting LB.
And then you have to go and run your mouth. You sound just like julius jones, another cowboy that many stuck up for.
Do you think maybe there is a reason dallas wouldnt give you starter money, or even pencil you in as a starter AND do you think there is a reason that sandy eggo wouldnt pay you starter money either?
Hell, dallas would have matched what sandy eggo gave you. Good luck man. Now Im wondering if the real reason dallas let you walk is your attitude.
Maybe you should have said something like this, “you know, i was a 2nd round pick and it took me a while to get on the field. i really appreciate dallas sticking with me and finding a role for me in their very good defense. It was clear they didnt view me as a starter, and I believe I can be in this league. So i decided to start anew in San Diego. I love California and am glad to be here.”
The only athelete who seems to have handeled any adverse situation with grace this offseason is Jason Campbell. i hope we ring his bell twice next year, but I really respect how he took the high road with the skins this week (even though he is probably seething inside).
LOL, hadn't seen his comments
He’s a good nickel LB and that’s it. You just can’t trust him in anything else. And it’s obvious that the rest of the League shares the same opinion.
I’m waiting to hear the same kind of comments from Roy “Thong” Williams… When he’s signed… By someone… In the U.S…. Canada wouldn’t do any good, that’s a passing League… That would be another LOL…
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
And I also agree on Campbell
His comments about the situation are the kind that should be taken as an example by most of the knuckle heads of which the League is filled.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
Campbell has surprised me
If he played for a different team I would be rooting for him. I have more respect for him than Kevin Burnett right now.
He is a one dimensional LB, who is injury prone....That was the reason they couldn't committ to him...
He had his role and did it well. He is not a 3 down LB.
WR Brian Robiskie coming for a visit....
OSU in the house!!………..Robiskie was on Sirus Radio today and said he has a visit with Dallas. Who said we won’t draft a WR in the early rounds….
I did
Still don’t think they will. Not in the 2nd or 3rd. JMO
But Dallas does need to be prepared on draft day for whatever happens. If they think a certain WR is the best value on the board, they better be sure about him.
Could also be a smokescreen though.
Feb. 27 -- Veteran free agency signing period begins. Trading period begins.
April 25-26 -- NFL Draft
I really think they are taking a WR this draft...
I dont think they are sold on Hurd, Stanback can’t stay healthy and Crayton is an older WR who may have one year left on the team.
not true at all
They wouldn’t have cut T.O. if they didn’t have a lot of confidence in their young WRs as well as Crayton.
If they happen to select a WR if won’t be for those reasons.
In Romo we Trust
Just because they have confidence doesn't mean they wont draft a WR...get a grip Terry...
Since when does Jerry do anything that makes total sense. We will draft a WR in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round and I will be here on draft day saying I told you so.
I don't think...
we’ll draft one in the second. That would be the equivalant of drafting back to back receivers.
Now in the third… possibly.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
I never said they won't draft a WR
I said if they do it won’t be because they don’t have confidence in their young receivers. It will be because a WR will be the best player on their board during that pick.
