Cowboys Rookie Camp: Get to Know the Players
Today marks another step along the path to the start of the 2009 NFL season. Sure, we're still a long way away from seeing real NFL games, but the Dallas Cowboys will get their first look at all their draft picks in this weekend's mini-camp, starting today. The 12 rookie draft picks will be on hand, plus a group of undrafted free agents and some first-year veterans.
The mothership has an article about it here. Since we drafted so many guys and added UDFA's (plus some forgotten vets that will be participating), I thought I'd produce a guide to getting to know everybody. I've included some links to bios, video highlights, and good articles for the guys who will be hitting the field this weekend.
Check it out after the jump.

I dont know why I still get so excited about jersey numbers.
Jerry Jones could go in his sock, slap you wit a stack of hundreds, then catch you again on the backswing wit 3 Super Bowl rings. So who the hell are you makin' fun of?

Hamlins got to do something about that 36. I think thats the ugliest number there is.
Maybe he can have 25 when Pat Watkins gets cut.

This is from Mike Jenkins' blog about why he changed from 31 to 21.
I’m changing my jersey number from 31 to 21. It’s a long story, but at first Roy Williams had told me not to take 31, it was bad luck. Then I pulled my hamstring in practice. I also really admired Sean Taylor, so I’m switching to 21 this season.
Is he gonna change his blog’s url too?
Trust them...they know what they're doing.

Buehler? Buehler? Buehler?
During the draft, I was totally miffed that Jerry picked a kicker. I have to say after seeing the video and his stats, I am stoked. I cannot wait to see kicks sailing into the endzone. He is also going to be a huge reason why our D is #1 in points allowed this year.
This pick really reminds me of how the Boy’s drafted in the 70’s. Find a diamond in the rough who is multidimensional and creates mismatches against other teams.
Go Cowboys!

Does anyone know...........
What other positions could he play?
I doubt he could be a starting linebacker, but would it be all that out there that he could play a H-back type of position. What was his 40 time like? I think it would take him much longer to get up to speed to be a backup on defense, but it would be nice to see someone back there that can actually tackle if someone misses a tackle and starts to rip off a long return.
And he seems like the perfect type of guy to have on punt defense, as well as kickoff returns with the new rules.

Over here, at SC
Buehler was a back up FB, LB, and S; an athlete. He won the K position when SC’s last kicker died during a hiking/rock climbing trip.
He ran a 4.56 or a 4.59… yeah, i know.
And i believe he did 23-27 reps, at the combine.
… all off of the top of my hea, though.
by falconPUNCH on May 1, 2009 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I seriously doubt he'll ever be more than a kicker or emergency gap fill.
That guys death was probably the best thing that could have happened for Buehler’s NFL career, and I’m not being brash. The universe opens doors in strange ways sometimes, and I think Buehler’s situation is a pretty good example.

Speaking of versatility, and multi positional play.....Check out this Jason Williams video...
Alright, I realize this kid will have several duties, presumably premier special teams play, as well as possible nickle LB, as well as an occasional blow to Brooking in the base package…but wouldn’t you think there might be ways to get him even more involved early ?
well, upon arrival to Western Michigan, where he was recruited as a Running Back, the team obviously knew he was athletic enough, and talented enough to transition to other positions, and as he packed on the lbs, they had him switch over to Strong Safety, then eventually to a rover type LB, all while retaining his RB like speed……..but that’s not all, he also lined up at Full Back occasionally, to utilize his size, strength, and speed to block down and seal the defender……as you will see he does admirably at about the 46 second mark in this video…..
btw…..he also caused a fumble on the opening kick-off…..number #6….watch it here: 46 second mark, # 6 FB
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCD74Lz_aGI&feature=related
ok, well this is all hypothetical…but what if we were able to eliminate Cricket Anderson as our FB, a guy that comes in about what? 20 or so plays a game, if that ? and does do a decent job on special teams, but c’ mon…Dallas continues to bring in FB’s to compete and vie for Cricket’s job,, it’s not like he’s irreplacable…..fact is..I think the entire position should be eliminated, but I do understand there are times when FB is needed in power running schemes…but I imagine we run at least 75% of our place out of the single back formation…..
…..BUT…How bout getting the most out of Jason Williams as a two way player (talk about the PR that would bring)….but seriously, Williams is 6’1" 241lbs, plus ? (ideal size of a FB)…runs a 4.44-4.49 40 ? (heck, might even hand off the ball to him on occasion)..and is as strong as an ox, 25 reps, is accustom to engaging linemen, was a former RB, and obviously is one of the most athletic, strong willed, and tenacious guys around, playing with a chip on his shoulder………..You can free up the FB position, and retain that 3rd QB, and 2nd K, without sacrificiing a more prominant role player………it all makes sense to me…

opps...meant Western Illinois...
Western Michigan
by My_2_Cents on May 1, 2009 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
ok...A retraction to previous statement.....apparently Western Illinois is on a tight budget and assign duplicate numbers to several players...
so my assertion that it was indeed LB- Jason Williams playing FB in the above video is incorrect, as the Leathernecks have a FB, not named Jason Williams who plays FB for them………
I still contend that Jason Williams would be more than adequate to play FB in the NFL, and I’d seriously consider it, if it meant freeing up an additional roster spot…
alrighty….

First thing I noticed when I saw those....
Jersey Numbers
58 (LB) J Williams / (LB) Mike Hegman………..solid and steady
59 (LB) B Williams / (LB) Dat Nguyen………tackling machine
18 (K) Buehler / (K) Chris Boniol…………………..kicker in mid 1990’s
36 (DB) M Hamlin / (DB) Vince Albritton……………unspectacular
79 (OL) Brewster / (DE) Harvey Martin……………….opposite side of the ball; sack master
55 (LB) Hodge / (LB) Lee Roy Jordan……………..one of the all time great cowboys
31 (DB) Smith / (DB) Roy Williams……………hard hitting db; covers like a thong
7 (QB) McGee / (QB) Steve Beuerlein…………..decent backup qb
89 (TE) Phillips / (TE) Billy Joe Depree…………..one of the all time great cowboys
57 (LB) Butler / (LB) Kevin Burnett……………….never quite lived up to his potential
87 (WR) Johnson / (TE) Jay Saldi………………….steady but unpectacular
33 (DB) Mickens / (RB) Tony Dorsett………………opposite side of the ball; one of the all time great cowboys

David Buehler's video has me excited
it’s just one kick after another going out the back of the endzone
by AustonianAggie on May 1, 2009 10:29 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
my beef with Buehler is this....
look – i think we got a really good guy in Folk…and if we need a KO specialist – i am fine with that too since clearly Folk cant put it in the endzone….but why did we need to DRAFT this guy?? unless they think there is a good possibility that he could beat out Folk for the kicking duties altogether…then i am totally onboard with that
but fundamentally – if we DRAFTED this guy with a 5th rd pick exclusively to KO…well then i dont get it…
seriously (and this is a question – not a statement)….couldn’t we have found a soccer player or some other undrafted FA that has a freakish leg to take the KO duties if that is all we need him for?? i dont know
by McLovin9 on May 1, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
or are we grooming this guy to be a KO specialist and to take over kicking duties when
Folk’s contract is up and some other team offers him stupid money??
anyone know how long we have Folk under contract?? his original deal was signed in 2007 so maybe this is the final year of his 3yr contract?
by McLovin9 on May 1, 2009 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
have you seen his video? half his KOs can't even be fielded
he can help Dallas average signifigantly better field position

if he keeps this up he will be worth the roster spot
by AustonianAggie on May 1, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
trade value
I think they will keep him, and I hope they do take 2 kickers to the game because he’s worth it for both is kicks and his coverage abilities, but Goose Gosselin makes an interesting point in this video (ht DC Fanatic) that when August rolls around, if the Cowboys wanted to trade him, he would be the #1 kicker on the market, and some team that desperately needs a kicker would have to give up a 4th rounder to get him, paying Dallas higher than where they got him for the privilege.
by scottmaui on May 1, 2009 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well 1 thing about our specialists
they are very specialized – Nick Folk has been great at FGs but pretty poor at KOs, and this guy is like 78% on FGs but great at KOs

What about the insurance of having a backup?
How many teams have lost their kickers for some time period due to injury and had to scramble to find some “out of work guy” to fill in? With Buehler already on the roster we are covered.

We had 12 picks
Chill McLove if he helps the team I could care less where he was picked. Really do you think were getting a HOFer in the 5th round of this thin draft. Plus he’ll be playing other ST packages also. So maybe we drafted a really good ST guy in the 5th not just a KO specialist.

who's to say we aren't at about the opponents 47 yard line, down by 2 points, and there's 1 second on the clock ?
do you think possibly we can run Bueller out there to attempt a 65 yard field goal, as opposed to throwing up a hail mary ??
the guy just might come in handy one day……….personally I was sick and tired of seeing the opponents starting out at their own 40 yard line every time…….Better kickoffs alone will knock about 30+ points off the total amount of points we gave up last season…

Ross Tucker of SI gets flamed by a Cowboys fan. Here's the Q & A. Kinda funny.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ross_tucker/05/01/mail/index.html
You have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to the Cowboys draft. The Cowboys did not have any immediate needs, so they drafted special team players, which was the weakest area of our team. Since you write now instead of play, you are entitled to your opinion, but since you don’t have any Super Bowl rings and the Cowboys franchise has five, I think they know more than you.
— Christopher Bryant, Reading, Pa.
“Ouch, and this is from a guy from my hometown. I don’t disagree that the Cowboys needed to upgrade their special teams, but it is not easy for rookies to come in right away and make a huge contribution in that area if they haven’t done it a lot in college, which most rookies have not.
More important, Christopher makes a solid point about Dallas not having any immediate needs. In fact, the Cowboys have really good depth at most positions. When you have two former first-rounders as backup linebackers, you have some serious depth that most teams don’t. But that only accentuates my contention that taking 12 guys is silly, considering no more than eight will even make the team unless Dallas decides to shed veterans. The Cowboys should have packaged some picks to move up and get four to six players in earlier rounds that they really liked.
And no, I don’t have any Super Bowl rings, but I do have more playoff wins under my belt (one) than Dallas does this decade. I know that stings, Christopher, but you made it personal, not me."
by Boundforbeach on May 1, 2009 12:01 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Actually no it doesn't sting
Playoff wins don’t mean anything to Cowboys fans, maybe to the rest of the pathetic league, but our expectations are higher based on the history of our franchise.

I say 12 draftees make the team
McGee, Stephen – both Brad and Brooks are gone and the team will treat him with kid gloves for now so he `s assured a roster spot, no way they try to sneak him on the practice squad.
Johnson, Manuel – is the only draftee I see having a hard time and will more than likely be on the practice squad.
Phillips, John – great blocker and will replace the departed Tony Curtis, I`d be surprised if he does n`t make the squad.
Brewster, Robert – ok, he has to beat out Pat MacQuistan or Ryan Gibbons… he faces a tougher challenge in my opinion from the udfa`s they acuired.
Butler, Victor and Williams, Brandon – I think Greg Ellis is as good as gone and these guys will be 3 and 4 on the depth chart.
Williams, Jason – you know their first selection will make it even if Barbie shows up.
Hodge, Stephen – special teams demon and the Boys lost Keith Davis so I like his chances.
Mickens, Mike, Hamlin, Michael and Smith, DeAngelo – Pacman is gone, Henry is gone, Watkins showed little, Brown and Battle can`t be upgraded? I think the road is paved for this trio.
Buehler, David – as long as he keeps his distance he will serve his purpose.

thats about how I see the roster
to close to call on the OLBs though – Greg Ellis
the 2nd string O line at the LG spot are going to have fierce competition
Pat, Courtney and Battle will have to bring their A game. Dallas year after year has been keeping young players, 8 2 years ago; all but Eric Walden made it last year; this year, I wouldn’t be suprised to see 12 rookies on the team. Dallas has been going youth for a while.

The pats could have had the exact draft we did and they would still get good reviews
mainly because they are a model franchise that has a proven system in place. Dallas does not have that kind of credit based on recent history (ala the last 10 years). If they come out this year and have a good year then the process will begin to where they can not be pegged with the stigma that JJ is crazy, and the team is going the way of the raiders (that is the worst case scenario as far as their reputation goes).

Last year when Dallas signed Zach Thomas they got ripped for signing an udersized old linebacker that is to small to play in the 3-4. But when Scot Pioli signs him to the chiefs, it was a great move that adds a linebacker with a huge motor, great veteran leadership, and one of the best pure tacklers of all time.

Pioli and Belicheck can have two subpar years before the pundits will start to question their thinking.
That is how much credit they have built up over the years.

I don't remember
anyone criticizing Dallas for anything last year. We were everyones Super Bowl favorites because of our offseason moves.

not at all
a lot of people didn’t think thomas would make any sort of difference for us because he wasn’t your typical 3-4 lb

Off subject...
but I just read on rotoworld that Washington plans on having Orakpos at LB on early downs and then putting him at end on pass rushing situations.
If that is the case, then Jason Witten or Marty B should go out for a catch against him every time.
I am a HUGE Orakpo fan, but he has no business being in any type of situation to where he needs to fall back in coverage until he gets used to the speed of the NFL.
Considering the Redskins use a 4-3, he should be at the end position for every snap.
Thats just crazy.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

I really like that they brought Dat back as an Assist. Coach
He always struck me as a player/coach on the field.
