Prediction: Cowboys Go 11-5 in 2009
Am I wearing rose-colored glasses? Maybe, but I'm predicting the Cowboys go 11-5 next year and Romo exorcises a big monkey off his back by earning a playoff win. Here's the rationale for my prediction for this season and why I'm sticking by it.
First, a brief reminder of the seven losses in 2008.
- The loss to Super Bowl contender Arizona came on botched special teams plays. Arizona opened the game with a TD return on the kickoff, and the winning score was a blocked punt that took our punter out of action for the year.
- The Redskins won by two points in Texas Stadium.
- The Rams beat us up with help from Brad Johnson's three interceptions.
- The loss to the Giants in New York was aided by three INTs from Johnson and Brooks Bollinger.
- The Steelers came from behind with help from Romo's three interceptions and one fumble.
- The Ravens got two INTs, and two long TD runs in the last minutes of the fourth quarter, to clinch a victory.
- The Eagles gave us a beat down after five Cowboy turnovers.
A brief look at our team then and now, and the reason for an 11-5 prediction, after the jump.
Running Backs - Last season Felix Jones was under utilized by Jason Garrett and then lost to the hamstring/toe injury. Marion Barber also had a toe injury that affected his level of play. This year we have Felix and Barber back, and we now know that we have yet another weapon in Tashard Choice. I think now that Garrett has a better idea of what he has, he will utilize his weapons more effectively.
Offensive Line - Flozell Adams was playing with a bad wing and Kyle Kosier missed most of the season. The offensive line play last year was, well - offensive. Both players have healed up and with Montrae Holland and Robert Brewster, our new draft pick, we should be adequate at pass blocking and improved at run blocking.
Romo - I'm a fan of Tony Romo but we all know that he puts the ball in jeopardy too many times. He sometimes makes bad decisions and he sometimes takes chances. I'm OK with taking a chance, that's what makes Romo a favorite - let's just cut down on the bad decisions. He's a bright guy and knows what he needs to work on, I'm confident that he will improve in that regard.
Receivers - A big question mark here. We have one of the league's best tight ends in Jason Witten and another tight end who shows flashes of brilliance in Martellus Bennett. Can our current crop of wide receivers produce the numbers we saw last year? That remains to be seen.
Defensive Backs - We made a huge upgrade last year with Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick. Now they have a year's experience under their belt. We added some quality backups and upgraded at the safety position with Gerald Sensabaugh and possibly Michael Hamlin. I believe the value of plugging this safety hole will have a dramatic positive impact on our defense.
Linebackers - While I feel like we got a bit of an upgrade with Keith Brooking, I'll call this a wash. We lost Kevin Burnett and Zach Thomas and picked up Brooking and Jason Williams.
Defensive Line - I'll call this a wash as well. We traded Chris Canty for Igor Olshansky and some will say we lost a backup NT in Tank Johnson but I'm still saying it's even.
Special Teams - Huge upgrade from last year. We have a new coach, our booming punter is back, we still have Nick Folk for FGs. David Buehler can launch kicks out of the end zone and we have some energetic rookies that will help us take advantage of our better field position gained from the kicking game.
A brief justification for my 11 - 5 prediction for 2009
The Cowboys are in one of the toughest divisions in football and despite key injuries and glaring weaknesses in the team last season, the Cowboys managed to split the season with the division rivals.
Our defense will be markedly improved from the added experience gained by Jenkins and Scandrick, and adding Sensabaugh and Mike Hamlin at safety. DeMarcus Ware will be free to do what he does best. Wade Phillips' additional involvement with the defense from training camp on will benefit every player on the defense.
Special teams will be better this year, and as a result of field position improvements, the team should be better. Improved special teams will take pressure off both our offensive and defensive units, putting them in a better position to dominate their phase of the game.
The offense will be designed to prevent Romo's turnovers. He has three horses to hand the ball off to and he has a primary receiver who should win most, if not all, jump balls at the sideline or end zone corner. Romo himself will be working to improve his decisions. No more three turnover games.
I'm basing my 11 - 5 assumption on the idea that we will be good enough as a team on talent to equal our 2008 win total, and feeling confident that the Cowboys have improved the glaring weaknesses that cost them seven victories last year. I think improving enough to pick up two out of the seven games is a conservative estimate.
That's my prediction and I'm sticking with it.

I think 11-5 is actually a conservative prediction...
For all the reasons you listed here, I see the Cowboys living up to last season’s hype – and establishing themselves as the premier team in the NFC. Maybe just maybe the Eagles hang with us, but I think the Giants offense slips more than their Defense gains.
I like our schedule a TON, and think we can go 4-2 in the division. I would not be surprised to see this team back in the 12-13 win range.

Let's Hope
But our coaching still scares me, except for special teams and tight ends.
Let’s hope Sensabaugh can plug that hole, and he won’t have any further off-field trouble. One would think we could plug that gaping hole over the deep middle, finally, after five years.
Let’s hope our aging and thin offensive line will be healthier this year than last—otherwise we’ve got problems.
Let’s hope Ratliff doesn’t wear down, and Ware stays healthy, and the young guys can pump up our special teams.
Let’s hope shipping off our best offensive player because of alleged personality problems doesn’t drag down the point production, and the question marks we have about Roy and Miles come up positive.
And let’s hope Romo can control the impulsive turnovers—although I’ve got my doubts.
I’m still wary of this team, mainly because of the coaching. I’m going with 8-8.
Sensabaugh
He’s a good safety. He did great over here in J-Ville last season… really him, and Rashean Mathis were the only bright spots on our defense. The Cowboys are lucky to have, the Jags and their fans would have loved to be able to retain him.

Haha. Good Question
The common belief is because of his recent run ins with the law, although really they were no big deal. But our GM Gene Smith is really trying to clean up this teams reputation… in other words we’re trying to lose the moniker Cincinnati South.
But the truth is, we should have kept the guy. He has good ball skills, he’s great in zone, adequate/good in man, and is physical in run support. Good strong safety all around. Probably won’t be in the Pro Bowl next season, but Sensabaugh does offer a reliable player, who can at times be a play maker.

Sounds like Sensabaugh could finally be the cure to our SS woes. This is one weakness that, if fixed, could potentially put the defense on a higher level.

11-5 is a good prediction
I agree with much of the write-up, except I think the Rams game and Eagles games were total team failures. If the offensive line plays to it’s potentia and we avoid the injury bug, this could be a great season. Wade calling the shots with competent SS play and the potential of this offense could lead to a super bowl run.

I share your thoughts Jim.
Your point on special teams may turn out to be huge in 2009. I would really like to see these guys flying all over the field and making plays on special teams. It could have a big impact on team morale.
Also the offense really needs Miles Austin or somebody to make some plays downfield so they can hammer away with the 3 headed monster. IMO Wade will throw a few more wrinkles at other teams with some of his new toys on defense. 11-5 sounds good.
Defense (and health) will determine
I like your reasoning because, well, I’m a fan and rose colored glasses are made for this time of year. Had a bad weather day yesterday and watched some old videos of the Boys. One of them was the ‘92 NFC championship between us and the Niners. Time had erased a lot of the game. My biggest memory was Harpers big catch in crunch time that all but decided the game. What I had forgotten was that they had beat us for most of the game, they may have had the better overall team. Our special teams did a poor job over all, our line had problems keeping Aikman clean and making holes for #22. (does all this sound familiar???) The big difference…turnovers! Special teams, as bad as they played, created turnovers, thus opportunities. The defense played alright (remember they had a very good west coast offense with Rice, Waters, Young, etc.) but turnovers were again the diference. The offense, again with the opportunities that the turnovers provided, were able to get in rhythym and wear down the line with the big O line, Emmitt got going, and Irvin, well was Irvin. Irvin reminded me why he was so good. He wasn’t fast, he wasn’t big (by today’s standards anyway), but his body control, will, and being where he was supposed to be, made him who he was.
I say all that to say that, hey, maybe with the tweaks we are talking about, turnovers could be the result. Am I saying we are as good as the ’92 team, no, just saying…
14-2
A. Defense causes more game changing plays.
1. Wade is involved more
2. Better safety play
3. Ware has more freedom becuase of 1 and 2.
B. Less mistakes by Romo
1. Defense takes pressure off by cause TO
2. ST gives better field position
3. Run more this year.
C. The Eagles Giants and Redskins all got worse.
1. Mcnabb and Westbrook are a year older and injury prone.
2. Giants Offense needs a Plax. If they dont find a replacement then bad Eli is back
3. Skins try to trade Campbell that cant be good for his morale or chemistry.
so C is a little biased but i firmly believe in points A and B thats why we will go 14-2
What the French?! Toast!
i don't know if i'd say that they all got worse...
while the redskins do have the qb trade drama, they did add albert haynesworth which is probably one of the best defensive tackles in the league and draft orakpo (unproven but athletic freak)
the eagles did give mcnabb more weapons via the draft but i feel the loss of brian dawkins will really change their defense… and not for the better
i think every team in our division got better except the Giants
The Giants are about the same because Canty is a good player but they need more WR help
The Redskins signed a few good players and The Eagles probably have the best offensive line in the division with the addition of the LT from Buffalo
I don't think we can say that about philly
Mcnabb, westbrook aged which could impact them more than anythign they did this offseason. Westbrook is on the wrong side of 30 by now i believe. Peters isn’t a significant upgrade over tra thomas. They lost their entire safety rotation, sheppard and sheldon brown wants out. Do Maclin, McCoy and Stacy Andrews make up for this? I don’t think so. By the time Maclin becomes a significant weapon, mcnabb will be long gone.
Dallas is the only team that didnt improve
from a talent and personnel standpoint. It remains to be seen if we can do more with less. New York, Philadelphia and Washington all got stronger.
but we improved from a chemistry standpoint
and that even be better. We proved last year its not how much talent you have that determines success.
In Romo we Trust
Maybe
We might have improved from a chemistry standpoint (remains to be seen) but that doesnt mean we will have more victories. Cohesiveness is important, but so is talent.
I heard something on NFL Network the other day on this same subject.....
Terrell Davis, Warren Sapp, Deon Sanders and Jamie Dukes were discussing talent and chemistry. They all pretty much agreed that winning cures everything. Chemistry is only an issue when a team is losing. Funny how they go hand in hand. You can have all the chemistry in the world but if you don’t have the talent you won’t get anywhere. People make way to much of an issue on chemistry.
but what caused us to lose last season?
It certainly wasn’t a lack of talent until the injuries started to pile up.
In Romo we Trust
but we have plenty of talent
as much as any team in our division IMO. Talent certainly isn’t the problem with the Cowboys.
In Romo we Trust
We have great talent at the top
but our depth and role players leave much to be desired. At times it seemed like a case of too many chiefs…

We didn't get worse
Better LBs, better Safeties, better Special Teams, better O-Line.
And at QB, we have our’s hitting the point where guys become great or also-rans.
So we lost T.O.? Most believe that’s a good thing.
So yes, we got better.
Res firma mitescere nescit
Talent-wise, we got much worse
Fight – How do you figure we got better on the O-Line? The only addition is a long-shot project in Brewster. Flozell is a year older and has a new contract, which could make him complacent. At best its a wash. I don’t see that we are better at LB either.
Improvements:
Quarterback – We now have a competent back-up.
Halfback – Same cast of characters, but healthy.
Tight End – Another year of seasoning from Bennett.
Safety – Sensebaugh over Williams should be a nice upgrade.
Special Teams – The rookies should improve the unit, but keep in mind they are still rookies.
Declines:
Wide Receiver – The dropoff in talent here overshadows all the improvements listed above. Not only are we losing TO’s production, we are losing his threat as well. Many teams double teamed him, which opened up other holes. Now, most teams can double Witten and take him out of the picture, should they chose to do so. Or they could stack the box against our three-headed rushing attack.
Linebacker – We lost Zach Thomas and Kevin Burnett and picked up Keith Brooking and 17 mid-to-late round rookies. ZT is a better player than Brooking and has more to offer at this point in their respective careers. I don’t understand all this blind faith in Brooking at this point when most Atlanta fans have said he has lost a step and they were happy letting go of one of the most popular players in their recent history.
Cornerback – Scandrick and to a lesser extent Jenkins looked good for rookies last season. But going into last season with Newman, Henry, Pacman, Jenkins, and Scandrick was a much stronger group than this years when we have the two second year guys fighting for a starting spot and penciling in Mickens as the 4th corner. If we have an injury or two, we will feel the loss of Henry and Pac.
I strongly disagree
T.O. will be our only loss of talent and that will be made up with better chemistry (see GMen when they lost Shockey).
Brooking and Olshansky are just as good as Thomas and Canty, if not better.
Pacrat and Tank Johnson were severely overrated so their loss will be very minimal.
In Romo we Trust
Agree to disagree
Funny you mentioned Shockey and the Giants because I started writing an article yesterday I plan on posting today or tomorrow regarding this exact point. Let’s argue discuss in that thread more.
Keep in mind I am only talking talent here as I don’t believe we can predict the chemistry factor, especially before the season.
I’ll give you that Olshansky is roughly a wash to Canty (Canty has to be considered slightly better by most in the NFL or his contract wouldnt have been double what Olshansky got … but I would rather have Olshansky based on the contracts alone.) But I don’t understand what you are basing the Brooking comment on. I can provide numerous reports saying Brooking is not the player he was 2-3 years ago. I’m not implying ZT was either, but Brooking was never as good as Zach and is certainly not better now that they are both in decline.
Tank was a little overtated, although I think the truth is closer to him being overmatched as a 3-4 NT. Pac missed a year of football and couldnt find his form. In 2007 he was one of the best corners in the NFL. If he had the desire to get that back, he could be good again. That being said, I’ll agree that what we saw on the field last year was not the same level as Pac circa 2007.
People always say...
Shockey leaving spurred the Giants to winning. I live in NYC and I can tell you that had little to do with it. It’s something nice for ESPN to feed to fans.
What changed the Giants season around was taking the game out of Eli’s hands and putting it into the hands of their front four defensively. They had a team that committed few mistakes so they ran the ball, and allowed that front four to take over games. They just asked Eli to be efficient. But they also had the threat of Plaxico to keep teams honest. Remember, we used to have shootouts with the Giants. That more than anything turned their team around.
People need to stop looking so hard trying to determine a guy’s “character”. Any publicist worth his salt can teach a player how to be a “high character” guy and be lauded by ESPN. Just every time someone puts a microphone in your face say the following:
1. I don’t care about myself I only care about the team.
2. I don’t care about money, I only care about winning.
3. I feel so blessed I want to give back to my community
4. I don’t deserve any of the credit, it all goes to my teammates.
Now wether someone actually believes any of that, we’ll never know, we don’t know them personally. The only reason any of these guys are in my life is because I watch them on Sundays, and the only thing I really care about is how they do on that day.
lol i was trying to remember who it was. You are both right.

Tar Heels = National Champs in Basketball ... #1 in Baseball ... Top 10 this year in Football?
If the O-line shows up we have a chance for a great season! If not...
or if the injury bug hits again then we’re looking at about a 12th round draft pick next year!
Sounds like a lot of the predictions people made last year!
I’d say 10-6 tops, 9-7 a possibility, and either way a battle to get in the playoffs, because the NFC is much tougher than a few years ago.
They could even go 11-5 and miss the playoffs.
Whatever we think, they’d better bring it every week, and for all 16 weeks.
I’d love to be more optimistic, but those last 2 games were most awful things I’ve ever seen from a Cowboys team. They’ll need to prove to me they’re winners and have guts, pride, heart, and poise under pressure.
They’ll need to prove it to themselves, too, because no matter what they say, that ending to a season is fresh in their minds.
Also, the excuses are embarrasing.
“We had injuries.
But we ALMOST won against Arizona and Pitts.!”
There are many teams that can play that excuse game.
I agree in principle that the Cowboys are about as talented as all of the playoff teams from last year. the difference between them is in the mind and hearrt. but I can’t just assume that’ll change until it happens.
I don't think injuries are an excuse...
But they do effect the game pretty harshly.
If you look at the 2007 Steelers with a beat up Troy Polamula, and compare them to the 2008 squad you see a totally different defense.
Most of the time, the team that wins/or makes the super bowl has been relatively lucky on the injury front.
Look at the difference in the 2006 Bears and the 2007 Bears, the defense went from relatively healthy to being banged up with injuries.
The talent level in the NFL is so close that one or two injuries can change a game.
In fact you can even say that with the Eagles that Brian Westbrook’s health is as a determination to their success as anything. All it takes is one or two key players to go down from being on the brink of the playoffs to sucking, or from being in the playoffs to being on the brink.
Not an excuse, that’s just realistic.
That’s why winning games when healthy is so crucial.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
NE loses Brady and goes 11-5.
The Giants were 12-4 while Pl. Buress played 10 games wth 35 catches. And with Osi Umenyiora out all year. Isn’t that like us losing TO and Ware?
Seattle beats the Boys in a playoff game with a loan officer at CB.
Injuries are a given and (some)other teams overcome them.
Also, we had our chance-except for Greg Ellis, our 13-3 season was almost injury free.
by Realist Larry on May 18, 2009 12:47 AM CDT up reply actions
I didn't say it was impossible.
But injuries do effect the team.
So New England went from being a 18-1 to 11-5, the Giants went from super bowl champs to first round bounce, and the Boys thing in Seattle… well that had as much to do with the CB play as it did with Bill Parcells not taking advantage of a banged up secondary.
I’m not arguing that it’s not an excuse, not to lose to philly the way Dallas did, or completly tank against a pathetic St. Louis team without Tony Romo, but injuries do matter. The NFL is too close in talent for it not too.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

This is a Dallas Cowboys blog
Most fans are going to take offense to a lot of negative comments about certain players and the team in general.
If you go on other blogs in the SB Nation, you’ll see fans from other teams get defensive about negative comments about their star players.
If you go to the Colts blog, you’re get attacked much more than you get attacked here if you say anything negative about the team, whether it comes from fans from other teams or Colts fans themselves.
Just the nature of being a fan.

Ahhhh, I see.
Well, you live in your
“We’re going undefeated every year!!” :)
Happy world, and I’ll live in the real world.
The last 3 years have seen this team collapse at the end of the season.
Yet we always hear about all their talent, right?
Therefore, there are only 2 conclusions: 1) The team is not as talented as many think.
Or, 2) the team lacks "heart’, or whatever term you want to use for that subjective thing.
I happen to think it’s a little of both.
Also,
What do you call what happened in the last 2 games last year? It’s the crucial games when the season is on the line that count when measuring a team’s heart.
Finally, I predicted 10-6, a better record than last year!
Although, why I bother to reason with you I’m not sure.

Agree Completely
Until they become clutch and have a will to win all the talent in the world won’t win this team and this city a superbowl. We need a leader who can take this team this distantce and not make excuses which unfortunately has become the trademark of this team and its fans recently.
10-6, but change is coming.
After the last game with the eagles I had a list of things in my mind the team should do in the offseason to turn this thing around . So far all those things have been done. The thing Realist Larry said about heart and mind hits the nail on the head with the 2 things this team lacked last year. The talent is in place, a gameplan is in action to bolster the defense and prevent the offensive turnovers. But come Sept it has to be executed. And then executed each and every week and then into the playoffs. No more Dec letdowns, No more come from behind defeats. If it happens this season it would be great, but unfortunately we won’t really know until Jan ’10.
You can have all the heart and mind in the world.....
If you turn the ball over left and right, it wont matter much.
If Dallas gets back to the plus side in TO ration, they can very likely hit the prediction given above.
But the turnovers come for those reasons.
The turnovers, being a league leader in penalties, giving up two 70-yard TD runs in one game against Baltimore-those problems are mental.
“Mental breakdowns”
Focus, especially when the pressure is on, separates teams when the talent is about equal.

And did I mention the 44-6 whipping to close things out?
Because, the Eagles are not 30 points better than the Cowboys. There is no ‘execution’ explanation for that disaster.
Whether to blame the coaches, players, or both, I’m not sure, but something was definitely wrong Mentally in that game.
Their might have been a lack of heart too, but who knows? That’s harder to call.
by Realist Larry on May 18, 2009 12:51 AM CDT up reply actions
I'll go 12-4
The Giants lost their best receiver and their defensive guru. Spagnuola is a huge loss.
The Eagles are banking on rookies, and they didn’t get the rooks they wanted.
The Redskins weren’t that good to begin with.
Our offensive line is our big question mark. Our second biggest question mark is conditioning.
Wade will improve the defense, and I believe Garrett will be much better this year. He’s learning on the run.
I know Wade is the Heach Coach, but I can see this team sticking with Wade on defense and Garrett on offense, without placing emphasis on the HC job. “If” we can get into and win in the playoffs.
12-4. The rookies on this team make a difference by mid-season.
Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.
Joe ThEEsman
Not a big fan of playing "what if"
Especially excusing close losses. We could do the same thing with their wins in 2008. The Cowboys barely escaped with wins over the Eagles and Bucs, and had nailbiters as well against the Redskins and Bengals. A few close calls go the other way and they go 5-11.
Anyway, a stat that bothers me from last year is that the team failed to gain more than 100+ yards rushing in ten games, fwiw. Six of those games were losses. Injuries hurt, but I haven’t trusted this offensive line, even when healthy, in YEARS.
No doom, no gloom, no rose colored glasses.
They have made some moves in the right direction in the offseason (which isn’t over yet). On talent alone I’ll wager 11-5. Of course the point is moot if the season even starts to appear as it did last year. And by that I mean injuries. Dismiss them all you want and mention that every team plays with them. Well, not every team plays with injuries to key personnel (QB, Certain OL positions, RBs) during the season and comes out unscathed. If this team stays healthy, I think they can win 11 this year.
Without signifigant injuries to key players
11-5 or 10-6 and a playoff spot. All I can say is they better get it done this year.
The way I look at it is we have already missed opportunities to achieve the last 3 seasons. These playoff windows don’t last very long.
The 2006 season, should have had at least one playoff win at least to build on for the next season.
In 2007 the table was set and the Midgets came in and caught fire.
In 2008, yeah we had a chance to make the playoffs, but as banged up and dysfunctional as this team became, we would have been lucky to win a playoff game.
In 2009, this team has a better defense than the 2007 squad, and if the emphasis on offense is shifted to more 2 TE sets and pounding the ball with our RB’s, I think 10 wins is a conservative estimate.
Training Camp '09 = Mega Thunder Dome....80 men enter, 53 men leave.
agreed
the ship has to be righted this year. Our window probably has another 5 or so years. The one significant loss for this team in the near future is flo, if hes properly replaced we’ll see that full window if not its probably more like 2 years.
I agree on 10-11 wins. If we escape the injury bug (like in 2006-2007), spencer takes the next step and roy is the guy we hope he is, 12-13 wins is possible, but you’ve gotta expect SOME injuries.
I think this division is almost perfectly equal. The redskins had a good offseason. Their area of weakness (Dline) was undoubtedly addressed. Meanwhile, I think the Eagles improved their offense and lost significant defensive players. The Giants are relying on rookies to fill plax’s role – only time will tell. Those teams could be terrorized by dawkins/sheppard and burress leaving.
The Giants will be fine.
They’ve built their team the right way-focus on the guys up front, build strong OLines and Dlines-then fill in the skill guys.
Plaxico only caught 35 balls last year anyways.
Also, Philly will be fine-I don’t know why, they just always are these last few years! Reid must be some kind of genius. If they were going to drop, last year would have been the year. But they always finish strong.

My only question about the Midgets is
How will their defense perform without Spag? That was a big hit.
I think they won’t be much different on offense. They basically pound the ball to set up play-action. As you point out, Burress wasn’t a 80 catch WR last season and they still won the division. Smith, Hixon, and Nicks should be good enough.

I'm sure their defense will be fine.
It’s not like they’re just gonna put some bum as the head at DC….I mean really I’m sure they knew he was gonna take a job somewhere as a Head Coach so they must’ve planned in some way.

I think its as much Jim Johnson as it is anything with the Eagles. That guy has got our number BIGTIME! Only because we’ve never been able to beat his blitzes. On the occasions we managed to barely handle the onslaught, we squeaked out victories against the Eagles.
And that was the thing with the Giants too. They had Johnson’s protoge’ in Spagnuola. I realize there’s lots of great DC’s out there, but those two guys understood the blitz packages that break down our blocking schemes.
Also with both those guys, playing the Cowboys was always big for them. They both brought their “A” game everytime they came. Everyone brings their “A” game against the Cowboys, but those two studied our blocking for years.
Question: When do we as a team, acknowledge that, and do something about it? I think Parcells was in the process of doing so when he left. That’s why he wanted to run the two-TE offense. For the extra blocker.
Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.

blitz package
Is it the coaching or does this current line not have the ability to make the proper adjustment and pick up the blitz?
I wouldn't say never.
In the first games of 2008 and 2007 the offense handled them pretty effectively.
In that first game in 08, Romo threw for 300 yards and was never sacked. In 2007 the first game were the same results.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
Point taken
The game is hard mentally and physically. Sometimes you get out coached and sometimes you get out played. The other guy gets paid too.
Parcells team didn’t always protect the QB or make adjustments either. IMO we have talent on the OL but they don’t make adjustments well. They are sloppy. Maybe it is the coaching. Maybe it is the mental part of the game giving the OL problems. Guess who lead the NFL in offensive penalty yards?
Good post Jim
I think we go 11-5 easily if healthy, I feel the defense and ST should be much better.
As long as Romo is under center, I’ll never be worried about the offense, we’ll score points.
In Romo we Trust
Jim... What about the rest of the NFC East??
As long as you are Kreskin for a day, what are your predictions for the Giants, Eagles and Redskins? We all play each other twice a year. Assuming we split the series with each of these teams (a big assumption), that’s 3 losses right there. And you are thinking we lose only 2 other games? Phew… I hope you are right, but you’re wearing some rose colored glasses to be sure… Where do you see the other beasts of the east finishing?
5-1
only losing at Philly

Bound...
Sorry, my psychic radar only extends to Valley Ranch.
But, I just have a feeling that Washington won’t be as strong this year as last. Haynesworth and Orakpo could make their defense really strong but I have a feeling their offense will not catch fire. Offense begins with the QB and I don’t have much confidence in Campbell. (apparently they don’t either).
I think the Giants might also have a tougher time this year. They have a great D, but again, I don’t have a lot of confidence in Eli.
Despite losing Dawkins, I think Philly may be the toughest team in the division. They came together late last year and McNabb has some weapons.
Since I’m blinded by my rose colored glasses, what’s your prediction for the ’Boys?
"He has a peculiar felicity of expression." John Adams
I would add to your wash point that last year it was not their def that was hurting them
it was the offense.

We're going to see a more creative defense from Wade.
Having players to execute your scheme is huge. I predict we will have more turnovers. Especially if we make teams start from their own 20 and not on thier 45 yrd line.
Half of our defensive problems is initial field position.
I’ll take either of those two 10-6/11-5.
Yep...
In all honesty I think that was what was missing from the defense last year.
The D wasn’t horrible, but didn’t create turnovers like you would think a team with the most sacks in the NFL would.
But you are so right on field position. I dont’ remember too many times, that teams would go 80 yards on Dallas, that would be an interesting stat to look up.

that would be interesting
the only big plays againsts us – for points – that I can remember were mostly on special teams play, aside from the occasional big pass play but that will happen to anyone.
The lack of turnovers
That was what was missing, which is uncharacteristic for a team that pressures the QB as much Dallas did. I have to think that was a fluke, helped perhaps by the injuries to the DB’s.
One thing I’m psyched about is the rookies and Sensi taking advantage of passes thrown under duress. Maybe Hamlin can play deeper if Sensi plays the run well. That should help also.

The optimist in me loves this 11-5 prediction…
The pragmatist in me, sadly, just doesn’t think it will happen that way. The Cowboys got off to an outstanding 12-1 start to usher in the Phillips/Garrett era but they’ve since slid back into mediocrity. In the 20 games they’ve played (including the playoffs) since that start they’ve gone 10-10. Three out of the past four seasons the team has finished 9-7 and I know that injuries played there part in last season’s mediocre finish but the pattern of inconsistency is hard to ignore. Every team in the league has injuries of one type of another throughout the course of a season but it’s the better coached teams that seem to survive those.
The difference in talent level from one team to another is very marginal and when key injuries occur it falls on the coaching staff to devise a game-plan that better utilizes the remaining players and I unfortunately have very little faith in the current coaching staff’s ability to do so.
I am however a fan of the recent converting of Phillips into an HC/DC hybrid. I think his greatest attributes are in the designing of and calling of the defensive plays and not in playing the role of a loosely involved manager. I’m hopeful that this cunning change plus the addition of Decamillis as the ST Coach will give the Cowboys a much stronger coaching staff in 2009.
I was not very impressed with the Cowboys’ offensive playbook last year. One can only hope that Garrett has a few wrinkles to throw into it this year to help make that side of the ball much less predictable. Most scary is that over the past two seasons the Cowboys point production has dropped from a near 24 points per game average to just a meager 13 in the months of December and January. This tells me that as the season wears on opposing D-Coordinators are figuring Garret out and that he is not counter adjusting. Perhaps these past two seasons have been great learning experiences for him and we’ll see a more innovative Garrett in 2009.
0 = The number of Super Bowls the Eagles have won.
football is a game of adjustments
In 2007, Garrett had the upper against the league’s defenses and in 2008 the leagues defenses made the necessary adjustments to take away T.O. and without the Cat’s speed, they regained the upper hand.
In 2009, I’m confident that Garrett will make the necessary adjustments to counter what the defenses throughout the league did to slow down our offense and it will once again become explosive.
In Romo we Trust
four straight winning seasons isnt really inconsitent
plenty of teams in the league would love that sustained success

Hard to argue with 12-1 ... then 10-10 ... that is about as inconsistent as you get
I am all about optimistic projections for this year. I am in the “injuries killed us” camp. And I think we are due to break out on many fronts – QB, RB, young WRs, revamped Secondary, Special Teams …
Throw in a weak schedule, and this team has 12-4 written all over it.
BUT, there is no denying the questions regarding heart and coaching. I’m a believer in giving guys time to correct their mistakes, and I like the Wade as DC idea … but there is no doubt this is THE make-or-break for both Wade and Garrett.

Garrret had the formula for success. Then he just stopped using it. I hope that my cowboys prove me wrong, but until they show me something, i can’t give them higher than 10-6. i hope i’m wrong. i would love to see my team finally win a playoff game. Now that my rockets lost to the damn dirty lakers, i have only football season to look forward to. GO BIG BLUE!
Go Big Blue?
that is the gints battle cry, I think you mean go silver and blue.

11-5
That’s my prediction, too. In 2007, just about everything went the Cowboys way and they ended up 13-3. In 2008, just about everything went wrong for the Cowboys and they finished 9-7.
Split the difference and you end up with 11 wins. I know there have been some big changes, some for the better, some for the worse, but that seems like a reasonable place to start predicting from.

It's going to be ugly.
I see them as a 6 or 7 win team.
Jerry’s history when left to his own devices says the team completely falls apart this year.
1997
3 years after Jimmy was gone the team went 6-10.
This draft looks a lot like the 97 draft.
Who’s willing to bet this is not Wade’s last year like it was Switzer’s.

this is ridiculous
you want to compare a young and improving team to 1997?
ridiculous
just my opinion
Tar Heels = National Champs in Basketball ... #1 in Baseball ... Top 10 this year in Football?
Far too pessimistic
The Cowboys just had a year where almost everything went wrong….and they finished with 9 wins. I’m not convinced all of those problems won’t return, but to predict that things will be worse this time around?
December’s collapse left a bad taste in my mouth, too, but that’s just too pessimistic.
