Mosely: Steve Smith of Giants is almost better than Roy Williams

Josh from Winston Salem, N.C., thinks I'm too hard on Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams: Mr Mosley, why dont you believe in Roy Williams? He emerged as the No. 1 guy in Detroit by his third year, and in his fourth year, had 838 yards in 12 games, which is about an 1,120-yard season. I understand that Calvin Johnson is playing with bad quarterbacks like Roy did and putting up better numbers, but it doesnt mean Roy is not a 1000-yard reciever, it just means Calvin Johnson is better. Can you name me a wide receiver in the NFC East that is better then Roy Williams?

Mosley: Josh, call me Matt. When a player has been in the league five seasons and only has one 1,000-yard season, then I don't think you can call him a "1,000-yard receiver." I think Williams is an exciting player who can occassionally take over games. But I'd want my No. 1 receiver to consistently make an impact. His career in the NFL has been anything but consistent. And here's my list of Beast receivers who are better than Williams: DeSean Jackson of the Eagles, Santana Moss of the Redskins and I'd almost put Steve Smith of the Giants ahead of him -- based on last season's results. Smith makes clutch catches on a consistent basis. I've only seen Williams put up big numbers once -- and it was in Mike Martz's anti-run offense in Detroit.

Even though I don't agree with him, I can see how someone could say Jackson and Moss are better.  But Steve Smith almost better than Roy?  The guy is like a third receiver.  This has to be one of the stupidest things that Mosely has ever written.

Why so much hate for Roy?  I understand that Roy has underachieved some since he has been in the legue, but is all of this hate he is recieving necessary?  Give the guy a break.  There are a lot of mediots that are counting their chickens before they hatch.  I hope Roy makes them eat their words.

It's just because there's nothing to talk about at the moment

and its the offseason so anything is being said. Steve Smith is a very good reciever but put this guy out wide right and he’s barely do anything. Roy Williams is better than him and let’s atleast let the 09 season unfold before we make these assumptions. Sometimes Mosley can be an idiot.

Three Reasons

He’s a Cowboy, his numbers last year, and he hasn’t been consistent in a crummy offense (Detroit).

by bryangene on May 17, 2009 10:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

With that being said

I don’t see a reason why he shouldn’t be a 1,200 yd receiver this year.

And...

there is a stigma attached that he’s “replacing” T.O.

Is it too early to ask what round I should aim for Felix in my fantasy football league?

Jerry Jones got Mosley fired back in the day from a Dallas sports paper or radio station

I don’t remember the actual station. It’s in “Boys Will Be Boys,” I think. Mosley hates Jerry and the Boys and snipes at them whenever he can. He’s the worst of the crew over at ESPN. Better not to read him.

Because saying stupid things sells...

…. Especially if the stupid things have something to do with teh Cowboys and has a negative point of view.

Our team has a lot of haters that cheer those comments and fans look up to what he writes to see what else he’s going to say at another time.

You’re feeding the monster and then you act all surprized of it’s growth…

very true

They say stuff like that so we can get angry, then go read his next column to see what he says next. You’re 100% right.

i can understand moss and jackson

although roy does have multiple solid seasons on his record while jackson has 1. But steve Smith? The guy is a rich man’s patrick crayton. A reliable 2nd/3rd wr who does a great job moving the chains on 3rd down. And is not remotely at all comparable to what roy has done in his career.

I don't think he is a rich man's Crayton...

at best he IS Crayton, remember Crayton did have a 700+ yard season… has Smith.. NO

Crayton only had that 700-yard season.....

…..Because he had a near 200-yard monster game against a pitiful Rams secondary. Let’s not ever give him more credit than he actually deserves. His head’s already swelled enough. Crayton’s a good technician; nothing more. Most of the time he’ll be where he’s supposed to be at the very least. Occasionally, he’ll break a big play and occasionally he’ll drop a pass like a choking creep.

Smith’s still young so let’s not ask questions about his best season yet but I do basically agree. He’s good at being where he’s supposed to be and moving the chains. At least, he’s proven he’s more reliable than Crayton when the chips are down. Is he anything more than that? No, Moseley’s a rabble-rousing crackhead.

I agree.

I like Smith, but I think his ceiling is a #2 WR, and I really think he might belong more in the slot and apparantly so do the Giants.

Amani Toomer’s play had finally dropped last year and it never seemed like NY even tried sliding Smith into the #2 role.

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

Bwahahahaaha

Desean Jackson, Santana Moss, and Steve Smith of the Giants better than Roy? Laughable, thats all I can say.

Steve Smith?

I’m about as big of a Roy Williams detractor as there is, but to say Steve Smith is better is nonsense. If I’m a GM, I’ll take Jackson over him in a heartbeat, and depending on the makeup of my WR corps, I could go either way on Moss or Williams. But Steve Smith? Please… Mosley was starting to grow on me, but this one definitely sets him back a little.

DeSean Jackson?? Mosely has to be high

to believe that. RW is worlds better than Jackson, not even close.

The only argument you can make is for Santana Moss and thats it.

In Romo we Trust

Id rather have Jackson..... Over moss

Jackson Rookie year is better than all but one of moss’s previous 4 seasons… But i think Roy is the best WR there is in the NFC East….. We will see this year.

Mosley

is a known Cowboys hater. That just shows you how big of a hater he is. How many GMs in this league would rather have Steve Smith (NYG) over RW? I’m surprised he didn’t say Hixon is better than him too. Give me a break. It’s crap like this that makes me thinks they’ll give any jackass a column.

I don't care about Roy Williams' stats, I care about Cowboys victories

I certainly hope Romo doesn’t keep looking for Roy to get him into the offense or to pump up his stats this season to justify the switch from TO to Roy. That would be worse than the excessive attention given to TO in the last couple of years.

Romo has to think about handing the ball off more, or quickly hitting the guy who is open, rather than going to any particular guy. The more we spread the ball around, the better off we’ll be.

Truth Be Told

Roy has underwhelmed while in Detroit. The whole ESPN hates Dallas thing is whining. Nobody with any objectivity believes that. Just whining…

Roy, much like Romo, has a lot to prove in 2009. The likelihood of RW faltering (and Mosely being right) is much higher than that of him being a 1200 yard WR, simply because the best indicator of future performance is previous output.

However, I have a different perspective. I don’t think he has to be a 1200-yard guy for this offense to be better than in the past. I think this offense needs to become known for imposing its will on defenses and that starts with the o-line. If we can open up holes for SDT, then we’ll control the tempo and win those lower scoring but all-important games in December.

Unlike T.O., Roy is most likely to be a supporting cast memeber, not the star…and that is fine with me.
