Isaiah Stanback to have knee surgery
From the DMN blog:
Wide receiver Isaiah Stanback will undergo surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee.
Stanback suffered the injury in Tuesday's workout at Standridge Stadium but attempted to practice Wednesday without much success.
He is expected to be ready for training camp that starts on July 28.
Stanback has been troubled by injury since the Cowboys took him in the fourth round in 2007. He has had shoulder surgeries in each of the last two off-seasons after suffering a foot injury as a senior at Washington.
Stanback is competing for one of the final wide receiver spots and his absence will put him behind entering camp.

What a complete and utter waist of potential
Is there anyway we can just cut this guy already? Complete waste of a draft pick.

yeah, just like Jerry did with Jimmy Smith
I’m sure the same was said of him back in 1993 as well.

Jimmy Smith got released by Philly AFTER Dallas let him go
Appendicitis turned into something else, plus I believe I remember there being some work ethic issues early on also. Obviously he eventually turned it around.

THAT is a reach.
Stanback is no JSmith in the making.

I never said he was
My point is you don’t give up on a player with so much potential this quick.

4 years isn't quick
And he never had the type of potential that Matt Jones had. He’s an athlete but doesn’t have special, set-the-world-on-fire athleticism.

And, what potential?

Zach22,
No need to cut him at this point, the report says he will be ready for training camp.
He is already on the bubble i would guess, so he is likely going to be gone by the end of training camp unless he really shows up.
by THEjarhead on May 21, 2009 2:43 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Terry
You cant keep a player on a roster based on the fear that he MIGHT become a great player somewhere elese. Dallas’ roster spots are even more limited this year with so many draft picks, 3 QBs, and 2 kickers.
by THEjarhead on May 21, 2009 2:49 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That was my problem with him at first too Terry.
The fact is he is having surgery to repair things that are likely to get more wear and tear. Jimmy Smith suffered from appendicitis. Once that is taken out it will not bother you again. Can we say the same thing about Stanback? I want the kid to succeed too, but I’m starting to see a trend here.
When did I become a Cowboy fan? When my mom told me I was.

Agree.....
it’s sad, but this is not looking good for the kid. Big difference between appendicitis and knees etc.
by texstar on May 21, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I was a big Stanback supporter but it's time to cut him loose if one of the other receivers
does well in training camp. Maybe he’ll never have another injury after this and be an all pro. But it is not a risk that is worth taking because the chances are too low.
by quincyyyyy on May 21, 2009 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe now people will agree
Stanbach is as fragile as a China Doll and a bust. I thought maybe he would last one more season before they cut him, but now maybe not…..what a waste of a 4th round pick. These projects never work out. Maybe Jerry will get the hint this time. What a waste….just cut him already and let the other WR’s battle for the 5th spot….

I won't agree just yet

Stanbeck is starting to sound a lot like.......
was his name Sherrod back in the early 80’s under Landry? He first hurt his knee then he blew it out again running on the beach in Cal. Everytime he would try to get on the field he would do some catastrophic thing to his knee. Does anyone else remember him? So much potential but couldn’t stay healthy
by texstar on May 22, 2009 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mike Sherrard
He was a WR drafted by the Cowboys in first rd of the 1986 draft out of UCLA. I thought he was going to be a star until he tore up his knee in 1987 in camp and was never the same.
He tried a comeback with the GMen and was decent, but not nearly what he could have been.

this is getting ridiculous
A great athlete who can’t get off the trainers table is 100% useless. I’ve been a Stanback supporter but it’s becoming clear that there’s really nothing there to support. It’s unfortunate, but reserving a roster spot for him now would almost seem foolish. 3 years and 3+ injuries can not and will not work for a project player trying to make a major transition. Times up big guy.

Give him one last training camp
and if he can’t make it all the way through 100% healthy, adios amigo.
by Billito on May 21, 2009 3:37 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
yea, I'm in this camp... had high hopes, but even a pulled muscle and he's out
Stanback didn’t sign up for a dozen injuries, but unless that trend ends here, he’s obviously gone. I had all the hope and expectations in the world for the guy – he’s a tremendous athlete with sensational speed. But this is really bad news, and makes him that much more expendable.

critical camp
this training camp is going to be so critical for him because he is most likely going to be on a very tenuous bubble. Ogletree is a kid to really keep an eye on.
by Macarthur22000 on May 21, 2009 3:41 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I really want to see Ogletree...
some had him as a 3rd-4th round prospect. And on lunch break on dc.com they said Travis Wilson did well. And if the 4th and long winner is a WR we got him to watch as well.

a chance to perform and stay healthy during TC, but if he cannot get healthy enough to at least go out and compete…hey he’s a developmental player, bring in the next one.

I hope the kid comes into TC and sets the woods on fire. This is pretty much cleanup surgery to get the knee at 100 percent, but he can’t keep ending up on sick call. If he so much as gets a rash after this, he is a goner.

doesn't look good for the guy...
he has the worst breaks.
Not even close to JSmith’s situation. That was an executive decision…Stanback just can’t stay injury free. I felt the same way about Burnett, he won’t stay healthy for a significant amount of time.
I think giving him his last chance is appropriate but it just got harder for him to stick around.

But I’d rather have a guy who gets suspended but can actually deliver on the field than a guy who never plays because he is always either hurt or learning the position.

Irvin's winner
will be better than Stanback. 6 Weeks of training with Michael Irvin and he’ll run better routes. At a minimum, he will prove more durable if he makes it through Irvin’s training.
by JimmyJohnson on May 21, 2009 6:26 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
So if
Stanback gets cut, he should be on Irvin’s show next season?

by OskieOskie on May 21, 2009 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe he'll finally learn to play WR on Irvin's show
Every year, we hear how talented he is… but it takes soooo long to learn the position of receiver. Crayton was playing almost immediately. How long will it take him to learn the position? I said it then and I reiterate now, he was a wasted draft pick.
by JimmyJohnson on May 21, 2009 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Told ya'll
That last article on WR’s was just what I was talking up. My main concern is the health of our WR’s. Last year every one of them was hurt at one time or another. Hurd, out, Austin was out more than a few games, Stanback played a game or two, Roy was hobbled coming in.
We need another WR. Is Holt still available?
by torchindefenses on May 21, 2009 6:49 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Holt is with the Jags, but
our receivers got hurt playing on ST, hopefully this year we have enough rookies to fill their spots on ST and thus keep them healthy
by dcfanz on May 21, 2009 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My problem with the WR position
We have 4 Keyshawn wannabe’s – Roy, Hurd, Stanback, Austin (4.5 40 is not a superstar speedster) who have potential but don’t run routes like Key. We have Crayton – an adquate #3. But we don’t have any speedster or Smurf type of receiver to play the slot / flanker role on the offense.
by JimmyJohnson on May 21, 2009 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hear you, maybe the seventh round pick this year will grow into that
I don’t see any other option as of right now. Anyone with a knowledge of available free agents?

I hope Stanback has a
stellar training camp..and then they trade him. I like the kid, I think he’s a smart guy with a good heart. Unfortunately, I also think he’s just an injury waiting to happen.
