Memorial Day Cowboys
Just a quick reminder of the more prominent members of the Dallas Cowboys who served in the military, although I guess the title "Memorial Day Cowboys" might be a bit of a misnomer, since this day is meant to honor those veterans who died in service of our country. So far as I know, no Dallas Cowboys have ever been killed in action, thank goodness. Still, we of course still salute their service.
DD Lewis: The solid OLB missed the entire 1969 season (his second year) in order to fulfill his miltary obligation.
Roger Staubach: The Hall of Fame quarterback served a five-year hitch in the Navy, including a one year tour of duty in Vietnam.
Chad Hennings: The Air Force Academy graduate flew 45 missions in an A-10 Thunderbolt/Warthog in northern Iraq, then came back and had a pretty good career as a defensive tackle.
And last but certainly not least is
Tom Landry: The legendary coach served as a B-17 Flying Fortress co-pilot in World War II. He flew 30 bombing missions over Nazi-occupied Europe as a 20-year old and had to crash land in Belgium after their plane ran out of gas. Landry signed up for service after his brother was killed over the North Atlantic.
Looking at this list, and thinking about the millions of American soldiers who have served and died since our country's birth, I feel humbled and grateful and not a little ashamed that I cannot measure up to these heroes in many ways. So...God bless them all and their families.

From a recently Retired Air Force Veteran...
For those who paid the ultimate sacrifice I do hold dear to my heart. I hold you in the highest honor. Thank you for my freedom and protection!
For those who were injured in combat, you will always be held high esteem and pray for the strength to live a life full high hope and pride. Thank you for my freedom and protection!
For all that have served and still serving, you have my full support and wish you Godspeed and the perseverance to fight hard and keep the faith. Thank you for my freedom and protection!
"Out of need springs desire, and out of desire springs the energy and the will to win."
Thanks for putting that ever so more eloquently than I could ever dream.
BTW, it sure looks like we USAF carry a majority here relative to the other services.
As a former 11B in the 101st
I always remember those all gave some, and some gave all…
Deo Vindice Veritas,
Gotta admire Coach Landry even more..
Has anyone here ever gotten in to a B-17? Man, you simply cannot judge the size of that plane or the amount of room to operate in there. It’s so cramped..and then to think of the hours and hours of flight, the altitude, temperature, the Luftwaffe trying to blow you away, the flak..I’m simply in awe of that man and anyone who serves in the armed forces. My heartfelt thanks to all those who sacrifice and especially to those who sacrificed all, so I can sit here and comment on my favorite teams’ blog in relative security.
