Speaking at Tuesday's organized team activities session, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said of the club's veteran outside linebacker: "It's likely Greg will play somewhere else next year."
[snip]
Jones indicated that he's given Ellis and his agent permission to speak to other teams, but a trade is unlikely given the fact that Ellis is on the books for $4.15 million in 2009.
Jones said he met with Ellis this morning and the two sides decided to "leave it like it is," which means the Cowboys aren't in a rush to release him.

It is going to be interestning to see the timing of his release,
if JJ lets him go soon he is giving him a break, If he holds on to him its kind of a payback for the annual headaches
Really?
There’s nobody that wants to trade for him? I would think there’s some team that would want him, even at that price.
You're hoping
there’s a team who needs a pass rusher bad enough to trade for him as opposed to trying to bid for him with other teams
Browns....
They would be the team willing to trade for Ellis….Mangini is trying to rebuild the defense
WHY. . .
does the team make such a stupid move as to tell him to sit out or allow it to leak that they are interested in trading or cutting him? It totaly undermines their position. They should have just let him practice and privately tried to trade him.
…and why do this now? less than 1 month ago, they could have likely packaged him either before or during the draft for more (a player, picks, etc.).
Again, this, IMHO, is yet another example of Cowboys leadership mis-managemnet.
why (part 2)...
…assume that they haven’t been shopping Ellis during the entire off-season? And certainly since the draft?
To me, this seems like a decision that was reached sometime ago. Sure, even before the draft. My guess is that they’ve been doing the “secret” testing of waters and attempting to trade Ellis for a while, saw that nothing was going to happen and allowed the story to break now as it has.
I’ve got to believe that they felt good about the prospects they drafted for the pass rush / future LB position though I do fear they’re putting a lot of faith in players they’ve only seen moving around without pads.
I do agree with you that at $4m for one year, I would have expected at least one team to become interested in getting a player that’s below pro-bowl level, but who has shown consistent ability to pressure the passer. I would have thought a trade for even just a 7th rounder would have been possible. Specially considering that with a trade, a team could have Ellis for just one year without any bickering. Apparently, that’s not the case and Ellis will command (much) less than $4-5m guaranteed.
I'm surprised at the timing...
management had to know this was coming a few weeks ago. Why not work out a trade before the draft?
Unless they tried to and no one was interested

I thought they could've at least packaged him in with a pick to move around in April.
Predictions, anyone?
I’m going:
New England (of course)
Green Bay
Denver
and as a dark horse, Carolina.
Is it too early to ask what round I should aim for Felix in my fantasy football league?

I guess they really aren’t in a hurry to release Ellis seeing that they were in the mood for making transactions today.

Glad spencer will be the man now...
I am tired of ellis complaining like a child ..I appreciate what he brought to the boys over many years but its time to go greg …see ya…
I like that our management has grown some serious
cohones this off-season: release TO, Ellis, A. Henry, R.Willams (#38), pissing-off Burnett so he’d not sign here again… these are difficult (and questionable) moves to make. So I do appreciate the effort they’re making and the fact that they’re willing to open themselves up for serious criticism. I do think they’re generally trimming the right way.
However, they’re scaring the hell out of me. One botched play here and there can easily lead to a +2 or -2 victory swing. We’re now very thin of proven players at WR, outside LB, middle LB, CB, DB. Plus Watkins or Brown or both will be cut… yikes. I hope this year’s draft crop is one for the ages and that our unproven 1st and 2nd year players are ready because they’ll be playing and playing soon. They have better produce.
+1..Ellis is clearly on the decline and not worth the price tag he commands...
Spencer is a better OLB right now and will be a beast this season..watch..
