The "Greg Ellis era" is over in Dallas -- maybe we can return to playoff winning football now

Just wanted to point out that the Cowboys never won a playoff game during Greg Ellis's 12 years with the team.

Of course, there is no correlation between him being on the team and that run of futility.  But it is an easy way to mark the sorriest stretch of the Dallas Cowboys' great history.

(Note: we also didn't win a playoff game the year before Ellis arrived, but this doesn't change my observation.)

Ellis helped the team a great deal

Guy might not be sorely missed, but our lack of play off wins certainly wasn’t his fault.

Ellis was a great and classy player for the Cowboys

He’ll be remembered as one of the best players to have played in our storied franchise, maybe not top 50, but certainly one of the best.

There are many reasons we haven’t won a playoff game during his tenure as a Cowboys, but certainly Greg Ellis isn’t one of them.

Dunno

I think he leaves fans with a sour taste in their mouth from all of his bemoaning of his contract.

Ellis was drafted as a prototypical 4-3 DE out of North Carolina. The switch to a 3-4 in Dallas was not kind to him as he had to lose weight and learn to drop into coverage. Neither of these things were easy or natural for him. Yet, he made the switch without spouting off and was able to perform at a level that kept him on the field.

I put Ellis on par with guys like Tony Tolbert. We know the name, but he never really lived up to the hype around what we thought his performance should have been. Eleven seasons as a starting edge rusher and only one with double digit sacks. Kinda’ blah if you ask me.

He’s been a good soldier for the majority of his tenure in Dallas, but because his exit is preceded by a period of public discontent, I’m not sure Ellis will conjure up any sweet memories in 10 years.

+1...

I couldn’t have summed up my thoughts on him any better…

To me he’ll always be the guy they took instead of Randy Moss…

That sour taste will fade...

Greg Ellis was a solid football player, a mentor and team player. Granted, he did not do a very good job with the “business side” of football and developed a reputation as a “whiner”. Like the changing of the seasons, if it’s summer, Greg Ellis is complaining about his contract or future with the team.

But once the whistle blew on opening day Greg was a rock. Parcells saw a dominant OLB in Ellis and he was right. Had he not blown out his achilles who knows what he might have accomplished. I am sure his career sack totals would have been a lot more impressive.

I won’t miss the whining but I will miss the talented, dedicated football player that had the misfortune to be considered by many as “the player taken instead of Randy Moss”.

God speed Greg, I wish you only the best…

Garrett needs to get a clue!

Thank you

God, it feels like I’ve been talking to a wall, responding to the misconception that Ellis somehow contributed to anything wrong with our Boys over the last couple of years…

Ellis was all class. Never let his problems with the front office affect his play, and still helped out teammates who he felt may take his position before he was ready to relinquish it. That speaks volumes about a man’s character.

Now, I don’t disagree with the idea to move on without him. We drafted a couple of young guys to back up Ware and Spencer, and the 4 some odd million we’d be paying him for being a pass rush specialist would be a bit too hefty, but the man displayed a great deal of integrity for quite some time here and Dallas. I’m going to miss his constant and somewhat lovable bitching every off season from here on out…

hey have u heard about where ellis might be traded to? or will he be released? has it really been 12 years since the cowboys last won a playoff game?

Perhaps

It’s Flozell’s fault? JK. Can’t put this on one player. Can put it on the GM, but not one player.

curse of the whiney baby?

It’s not as snappy as the “curse of the bambino”, the “curse of the billy goat” or the lesser known “curse of Bobby Lane”, but getting rid of Ellis will be sure to put us over the top.

this is irrational...sorry

I don’t know how you begin to justify this logic

by rotovibe on May 28, 2009 3:39 PM CDT reply actions

Of course it is..but

That said, it’s not much different than the sports media foists up on us, especially NESPN.

I took the observation as more an interesting piece of trivia

Of course there is no way Ellis caused the decline, he’s been a stalwart. Doesn’t put up gaudy numbers, but gets the job done. Even though he b*thes in the media during the off-season, he shows up an gives 100% when it counts.

I think he’ll be remembered as a very good, but not great, player for Dallas.
