DWare's thoughts on Ellis / Spencer
As a huge Ellis supporter, I found this comment really interesting. Maybe I'm not interpreting it correctly. But it sounds like a subtle slam on Spencer / Carpenter. I hope it is but maybe it's just my own slant on things.
Ware was asked about Ellis, who once again appears may be one his way out of town with another round of linebackers being drafted.
"When I first came in he was a mentor to me and all the rookies. I’ve learned a lot from Greg," Ware said. "He’s a guy people leaned on. He’s also a guy that shows and leads by example. And then they brought - I’m not going to call any names - they brought a lot of guys in to take his position and you see how hard he works and nobody has been able to beat him out yet. He’s out there working hard and playing hard. I think he fits in our defense. I hope he’s here to stay."

Ellis has had a good run
But you gotta cut ties sometime and get whatcha can for the players. I hope we trade them and let Spencer become the Everydown LB or even let a rookie come in a be the situational pass rusher.
I think he was trying too hard not to insult anyone
But you can tell he respects Ellis quite a bit.
Training Camp '09 = Mega Thunder Dome....80 men enter, 53 men leave.
agreed
I think its more of a compliment to ellis than a criticism of the other guys.

I read in some magazine that D.Ware focused on learning from the vets when coming into the league.
And he stresses that on new players. I’m sure Ellis was and still is a major influence on him.
Unless Spencer or one of these other guys come around, I have no problem seeing Ellis play until he retires as a Cowboy. He’s still a solid player, much like Tony Tolbert was.

Yeah I read somewhere last off season
that Ellis was teaching Ware how to use other tools than his speed to beat OTs. Guess it worked pretty well.

Yeah, I think it was handwork or something.

I've always thought Ellis was extremely underrated
His production over the years have really gone unappreciated by most Cowboys fans who only seem concerned on whether he’s bitching in the offseason or not.
I don’t care about his whining or bitching, I only care if he produces on the field and since ‘98, he’s done just that.
I hope he stays a Cowboy until he retires, I love the guy.

Watching Ellis in Camp over the years...
you could see he was the one guy out there who had the widest array of moves and counters. He also seemed to enjoy showing the younger guys like Ware and Burnett how to get proper hand placement.
While I absolutely think he has added value to Ware and others, I think the team needs to get younger, faster and (in my mind, most importantly) meaner on defense.
I don’t know what the deal is with Spencer, but if he can take on a starter’s role, I’d like to see Ellis go somewhere and finish his career as a 4-3 end, which is truly his natural position.
"Well, we didn't block real good but we made up for it by not tackling."
- John McKay, the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
for that to happen
Butler and B Williams need to show they’re the real deal in camp, no way Wade goes into the regular season with just 2 proven pass rushers.
I think their inexperience is the reason Ellis needs to play out his contract here. I don’t think Ellis would be any more effective in a 4-3 defense at this stage of his career.

Spencer has not shown he’s ready for prime time. We need to hang on to Ellis for at least another year so that we can evaluate the rookies.
Garrett needs to get a clue!
Then you can't complain about him bitching over his contract. It will go on all year long...

I don't think I can take another year of his complaining...
Maybe we can find a taker before we unload him next off season, if he is around that long.

Ellis
is worth more to the team than we could get for him on the market. He is a part of the pass rush mix and contributes as a teacher to the young guys. Let him play. I think he has figured out that he needs to tone down the whining.
Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.
I agree
I think he’s still a good situational pass rusher.
He bitches alot, (I think I can say that), but he isn’t disruptive.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
If he's going to stay
They need to get him to shut up. It’s a terrible example for a team with so many young players.
