Flozell to LG?

I seriously think we should try Flozell at LG.  His days of staying in front of pass rushers is long gone.  I know that would leave a hole at LT, but we have Free, Martin and Brewster we can try out there.  We need someone who is able to slide in front of pass rushers.

Look how much better Bigg does playing inside.  He has less room to get beat and can use his strength.  Seriously, imagine the Hotel, Gurode and Bigg in the middle.  We could pound it all day.

Any thoughts about this?  I know LT is a vital position in protecting Romo, but it hasn't mattered recently because people have been abusing the LG so much.

Kosier???

Anyone think Kosier may be able to handle it? He should be quick enough to do it because of his size (294lbs to Flozells 340lbs)…

uh

I know LT is a vital position in protecting Romo, but it hasn’t mattered recently because people have been abusing the LG so much

so you wanna weaken the LT position to strengthen LG???
No thanks

Neither of those 3 are LT's...

The fact is we are handcuffed with Flozell right now. Maybe next offseason LT is addressed in FA or the draft.

on second thought Martin might be the answer

6 ft 8 inches 340 lbs runs the 40 in 4.9 and benched 225 41 times.

also Martin was a team captain

and once rescued 35 children from a burning orphanage.

Are you guys

thinking of James Martin? Isnt he off the team?

by fretman on May 4, 2009 7:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

James Marten yeah he`s been gone for about a yr i suppose

dang my imagination was running wild there with some guy named Martin.

But...

that should be the type of guy we draft next year. Period!

Idea is not bad.

Timing and replacement is an issue. Adams was nicked up a lot last year. Between that and trying to assist Proctor he didn’t play up to his normal. Another year at LT should show how soon a change needs to be made. LG might be a possibility. I sure hope that our new Lt is either on the roster now or drafted next year. A move to guard might cut down his penalties too.

I'm with oldboysfan

1. You move Flozell to guard and you create a much bigger need than you had before. Left guard might be the most crucial part of the line.

2. I find it funny that so many people are just ready to give up on Flozell after one season that he was hurt and he was having to overcompensate for Cory Proctor.

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

Not a terrible idea but...

Doug Free would have to step up his game tremendously. As far as overcompensating for Proctor, was I the only one who saw Dwight Freeney destroy Flozell at the Pro Bowl? Seriously, he was having a hard time just getting out of his stance.

Yeah

I don’t really care about how someone performs in a probowl.

Certainly an offensive line that just kind of gets thrown together.

not a good idea.

Anyone who has coached or played OLine can look at tape on Flo and realize that he is not OG material.
He is not quick enough to pull on run downs.
His reach is ideal for stunning rushers at the POA and using his leverage to position himself around the pocket.
His attributes are best suited for a LT spot.
In fact he is a large scale prototype for that position.
He is just getting old and injured.

Understandable

I see what everyone is saying about creating a bigger void at LT. What about switching Colombo and Flozell? Colombo seems to be solid and putting Flozell next to Bigg would be amazing. I just don’t want to watch another year of Flozell getting destroyed on the edge.

It seems like Flozell plays as well as the guy next to him. When he had Larry Allen next to him, he was dominating. The worse the LG gets, the worse he gets. It needs to be opposite. He needs to realize the LG is crap and step up his play without trying to overcompensate.

I think at the very least, we need to get someone behind him to push him. He hasn’t had to actually compete for his job in years so I think he’s gotten a little comfortable.

If it were only that simple.

Unfortunatly just because you can play RT doesn’t mean that you can be good at LT.

And I also disagree with you on the “plays as well as the guy next to him.”

In 2007 he was a dominate left tackle in the NFL and he was playing next to Kyle Kosier.

They have been knocking him since forever...

That probably has to do with Parcells shipping Larry Allen and putting Kosier in his place… Memories… They’re different players, but Kosier has been our most consistently good OLineman in these past few years…

Oh I wasn't meaning that as a bash.

Kosier is solid, but I just didn’t agree with the Flozell is only as good as the guy next to him phrase.

very true...it is not that simple.

It’s like asking someone to bat with their opposite hand. It really is. Hard to fathom but it is. It has a lot to do with their leading hand when positioning themselves against a pass rusher. There is a discipline involved with hand position, feet placement, and extension that greatly comes into play. And it involves hand dominance and overall instict on how you position your body. OL coaches try their whole career to train guys on these disciplines. They are not just pushing each other around.

Some guys can adjust to an opposite position but it is rare. There is some truth to the fact that the guard can help, but that is a limited case from play to play.

If Doug Free was forced to play LT,

I guarantee you Romo would call in sick.

At first I LOLed at this comment ... then I got really sad.

We MUST get better at finding, evaluating, and training OL prospects. Hopefully Brewster is a step down that path.

Just saw on DC.com

on free agency moves thus far that Berger is now with the Dolphins, anybody know if we made any attempt to keep him? Hadn’t heard anything about this until now.

have u noticed how many Lts go off the board early in the draft

it is a very important position and you do not just stick somebody in there flozell is fine with his blocking just he seems to be deaf with offsides calls
