How to upgrade the WR position- Jones, Boldin, or....?
If the Dallas Cowboys take the plunge and do something about the WR position, What should it be? I have been mulling over and pondering an answer to this question all offseason so far. Would Matt Jones be a good move for the Cowboys? Would Boldin be better? if not these two recievers, then who? Let's not kid ourselves, because if a poll was taken from fans, most would probably say that the Cowboys should have gone after WR talent early in the draft. Not even Jarrett Dillard was a consideration in later rounds. I know the team and the media are taking the stance of "the Cowboys are going to make do with what they have", and that's all fine and dandy, but I just have a gut feeling that more should and probably will be done to adress the position.
Personally, I believe we need a deep threat reciever more than a posession type obviously, because our deep threat game should not be reliant on Miles Austin alone. We have good recievers to play a posession reciever role, but Austin being the only Burner of the bunch worries me.
Can Anquan Boldin be had reasonably? Would he be a good fit for the Cowboys considering what they already have? Would there be anymosity from current players if the Cowboys went after him? Would Matt Jones make more sense if he has kept his "nose" clean?
Or would it be prudent to wait and see what the cuts bring to the table. We may be surprised at what we can get after cuts are made after TC if we are conservative, so that is why I believe we should wait and see. Please give your opinion on this ongoing team Dilemma, inquiring fans want to know......

How many?
How many people really think we should have wasted a high draft pick on a WR? Really?…….Really? How often does that work out for teams?
I understand the desire to want to improve your team. Get top guys at every position.
How many playmakers is enough on the offensive side of the football? How many players do we need on the receiving end of our passing game?
Will somebody please put together some stats using last year’s numbers…
- passes
- receptions to be expected based on a reasonable reception rate
Now..let our current players gobble up those numbers. Will Witten and Roy Williams not gobble up a majority? Let a few of our RB’s out of the backfield..and we gobbled up more. Do we want Miles Austin and Crayton to play any? I bet so. How about Martelius Bennett? I want that guy to see some action!!!
My point is….last year with T.O…there simply were not enough balls to go around…which is proven by Roy Williams low production. We do not need to replace T.O.‘s production with a Matt Jones or some other team’s scraps…we just need to allow our current talent to step up.
If we are gonna bring any new talent in…how about on the O-Line? Maybe a Veteran CB..you know one of our starters is gonna get hurt this year. I’d love to see a fan-post on our O-Line and how we have got to get a replacement for Kosier…he was THE key factor in our line falling apart last year and the season going south….BUT NOOOOO…it’s so much funner to talk about the FREAKIN side show..T.O. and his exit (thank God!!!). Then we can argue the rest of the offseason about how T.O. leaving is going to make the passing game go to hell because Roy Williams couldn’t come in the middle of the year and dominate.
Let’s for a second..say I agreed we need another weapon in the passing game to go on top of our other 10…Anybody think the Cowboys having to RUN more next year (thank God times a thousand) would not be a bad thing with the stable of RB’s we have?
Next to my last point…you know Michael Irvin is gonna send us a WR from The Fourth Quarter. There you go. All the posts about us being in dire need of a WR can stop…the next hall of famer is on the way.
One Last Point
…name what Gregg Ellis and Boldin have in common?
Can anyone guess whose bio this is:
“After three mediocre-at-best seasons with the Jaguars, “the player” was arrested for felony possession of cocaine. He entered a pre-trial diversion program, served a three-game suspension, and put together a surprisingly strong 2008 campaign in Jacksonville. And then “the player” got himself thrown in jail for a week after testing positive for alcohol. It was the last straw for the Jaguars, and they cut the first-rounder who failed to deliver on an incredible amount of potential."
Do we really need players like that?
No more 24-hr body guards..no more circus media atmosphere, no more complaining about contract in the media…..JUST FOOTBALL!!

Good post tb, but.....
if Boldin or Jones are not answers to upgrading the WR corp, that still leaves a deep threat type WR dilemma. Say what happens is we do nothing, then Miles Austin gets hurt, I hope you see my point. Patrick Crayton is not a deep threat reciever. There is no WR we should get that takes a majority of passes in any event. But to ignore a glaring weakness in the offense is also foolish, and thus the reason for the post.
I agree that the passes can be distributed amongst what we already have. Heck, I am salivating over the potential use of Felix Jones in a “Preston Pearson” type role. But deep threat reciever with speed is Miles Austin alone, and that would make the pass offenses “TO Syndrome” of not being able to beat press coverage a big problem for other parts of the offense.

does it?
We’ve seen crayton get behind secondaries plenty of times, and roy isn’t slow. Austin is our only legit deep threat, but we’ve yet to see him play a whole year. You don’t need two legit deep threats on a team to score points. And as you said, teams are going to be afraid of felix getting behind them too.
Our problem last year imo had a lot to do with playcalling. Too much of a downfield, big play offense combined with a line that couldn’t handle it.

I have pondered the same things
but I have come away feeling that Matt Jones or any other troubled player is not what we need… I mean we are in the midst of cleaning house supposedly! I think as far as skilled positions on offense we have plenty to build on. If we are going to add another man I suggest looking to beef up the O-line with an experienced player. The O-line is what worries me if anything about this season. Any suggestions on that end?

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttttttt
Hey there others like Mike Feurry he killed us some in the past and their seem to be a Detroit migration goin on he used to be killer too.Good as a possible second or third just in case of injuries or if no one pans out.
Theirs Harrison i doubt if he will take less that is the reason y the colts release him.. Having him would seem like sloopy seconds any way if you know what i mean.I was hopen on Torry Holt but he bank up wit the Jags for a nice pay day.
Bring n Matt just might as well say bring in Pac too at least pac didnt violate his probation not league but State ORDER PROBATION and snort coke. That stuff will mess up an athlete no wonder he couldnt catch nothing over there.

HHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLDDDDD OOOOOOONNNNNNNN
Pac may have done his past deeds but when he was down here with the C BOYS he was on best behavior. Deion came out and said Pac was not at fault the guy started with him. That is y Jerry did nothing to him, plus it was a internal matter. The only reason y the comminsoner got into it bc it was alchol related.
That stuff at the end of the season about the OTL report jerry and the comminsonser already knew about that stuff. The media just found a way to dig up some old crap. Those guys just wantd to get paid.

Pac did nothing wrong in dallas
except violate his terms of probation by going out and drinking and then bringing attention to it by getting in a fight with his body guard. Oh yea, he got suspended for a majority of the season.

Pac didnt start the fight the bodyguard did ,Deio said so. If the cowboys would have suspended him the comminsioner would not have. Everything bought attention to the cowboys that year to Romo,Roy Williams even a fly fart.

I don't think Matt Jones would represent an upgrade over Austin
But I do think he’d be a great insurance policy.
I also don’t think any of our receivers measure up to Boldin, so that would clearly be an upgrade…but likely and unnecessary one. We have the receivers to win right now, assuming they stay healthy. I’ve been on the Matt Jones bandwagon just to bolster the receiving corps and add depth, which is something we’re in dire need of.
3 of the 5 guys we are currently relying on(Austin, Hurd, Stanback) have injury concerns, and could even be called injury prone. Roy even played hurt last season. That’s my only concern, and the only reason I say go after a guy like Matt Jones. Should he compete for a starting job? Sure, why not, but I’m completely satisfied with Austin starting opposite Roy. But should one of them go down, at least we know we have a viable option to come in and take their place. Crayton’s solid, but I don’t think I’m comfortable with a Roy/Crayton or a Miles/Crayton combo.
So, to wind my long winded and most likely redundant post down, yes, we should do something at WR, but nothing TOO drastic. Miles, Roy, and Crayton can get the job done. We just need an insurance policy, and with Hurd and Stanback’s injury history, it’s probably a good idea to look elsewhere for it…

+1
I think Jones should be brought on as an insurance policy because I’ve already got a bad feeling about Austin. He’s missed the last 2 weeks of OTA’s due to leg injuries. I would rather Jones be brought on now so he has time to learn the offense rather than wait until we lose a receiver during preseason. I think if his deal is structured right, it would provide some insurance in case he screws up again. And make it clear that his position on the depth chart is pretty low.

That's right DC, I should .....
re-name this post the “what if Miles Austin gets hurt again?” post, because alot of WR questions will come up if he gets hurt. He is the only reciever we have with speed that threatens a defense the way it needs to be threatened. Maybe acquiring Matt Jones would not be such a bad idea, considering his speed. It is what we lacked even last year.

your post doesn't make sense
because you make the argument we need another deep threat but then you advocate we should go after Boldin, who isn’t any faster than Crayton, RW or Hurd, and is much slower than Stanback.
I personally feel the Cowboys need to roll with the young guys and not bring in a vet to stunt their development.

Post makes sense, but...
alot of people always bring up Boldin as a potential Cowboy- even you have seen the media rumors from time to time. I don’t believe Boldin would be a good pick up, but definitely a glamour move. But the fact still remains what would our reciever corp look like if Austin was injured? Talking about Boldin in the post is just really adressing The popular move of Acquiring him, which I don’t believe we should do. Would you be happy with what we have minus Austin during the season? I wouldn’t be….

Agree With Most
this is not the time to trade.
Let’s see what we have.Ifit’s notbroken don’t try to fix it.
Scour the wavier wire for an upgrade.
There will be some journeyman WRs cut that could solve our delima for a year.
Whatever is done Jones and Bouldin are not the answer for our Boys.

whhhoooaa
there relly aint much out there but there prob others. But to have a legit 1or 2 grade reciever might have to trade. I do not think its too late it getting close though. Another Roy Williams type trade might cripple this team. I feel what we gave up we should have got Boldwin or Andre Johson. Im just curious to see who they will bring in.

I keep thinking about one guy coming back possibly thats Todd Lowber. He had no football IQ last year but he did shine at time. I just think about if they would have kept him around on the practice squad and started to groom him this year. He did get clown last year but the guy was basically thrown out there in TC late in the offseason. He is exactly what the C boys need right now another deep ball threat ,a competitor , and a gifted athlete. He really just never was given an equal chance.

Another reason we should go after Matt Jones
is our Razorback formation…c’mon. If he ISN’T the trigger man in that formation, flanked by Felix, it’s damn near blasphemy. He could serve a purpose as a back up to Roy and Miles, and still contribute right away. All parties satisfied…

Good point. Hadn't thought about that.
I think we’d lead the league in college QBs turned WR if M.Jones was brought in. Sooo on the fence with this one still.

I would rather just wait till next years draft. There are some good senior WR’s coming out that we could get towards the end of the first round maybe even the second round. Maybe the best WR next year is LaFell. He could have been a late first round pick this year and should go in the mid first round in 2010. I would rather just see Austin take the next step and Williams become productive again and not have to worry about it. Next years draft is loaded at some positions we could be interested in.

Our current crop of WRs is fine
if they could manage to stay healthy…that just happens to be asking a lot of this bunch. I think that’s the primary concern. Not talent, just depth.

We need to use our first next year on a Tackle.
Unfortunately its rare to find a left tackle outside the first round. Flozell is about to turn 50, or so it seems, so we need to use our top pick on his replacement. I would love to be able to use this pick on a D Lineman or WR or Safety or anything really. But I dont see how we can get away from selecting a Tackle and feel we are making the right decision for the future of the team.

Do absolutely, positively NOTHING
Having a lack of talented skill players is not this team’s issue!
This team has to play better in the trenches on both sides of the ball (especially in December). Let’s make THAT the focus of any player acquisition conversations and not the glamour positions.
Reactionaries, who are pissing their pants because 81 is gone and think we won’t score a touchdown through the air without him, need to let this all play out.

As usual, I agree with you Blings, but.....
the reason for this post (my post) has to do with creating the mismatch at the other reciever spot and having another deep threat OTHER than miles Austin. If Austin gets hurt (and he is the key as to why this thread is legitimate) then I believe two things will happen:
1. You end up saying to yourself as a Cowboy fan why we have no recievers that can get open deep because they are not speedburners. The occasional bomb and big play still has to be a part of this teams reportoire, and to only have one reciever with skill and speed to get open like that isn’t good.
2. We end up finding out that Patrick Crayton doesn’t scare anyone as a no. 2 reciever. He does not strike me as anything more than a good posession reciever anyway in the slot, and his production as a 3rd reciever in the slot doesn’t warrant his mouth. He should be humble and just shut up and play. Now I could be wrong about Patrick, and I am rooting for him to be able to come through in the clutch, but I have my doubts.

Not every team can have a Brady and Moss
…and interestingly enough, having a Brady and Moss doesn’t guarantee you anything, as we saw two Super Bowls’ ago.
Everyone wants a mismatch at every position, but I think we all got spoiled by the Cowboys of the 90’s who had loads more talent than anyone they played.
Instead, the new salary-capped, draft-centric NFL doesn’t allow for that. With Roy Williams, Witten, Bennett, Austin, Crayton and others (to say nothing of what could be the best trio of RB’s in the NFL), we have enough skill players to match up well with ANYONE’S defense. What we have not displayed, however, is the discipline and intelligence to consistently scheme and execute in a way that takes utmost advantage of our weapons.
That’s not a mismatch issue, it’s a coaching and player leadership issue.
No WR in the world is going to solve that.

Austin fits the bill
I would rely heavily on Mr. Austin to step up this season, he is coming into form. He possesses the height, speed and good YAC skills. He does not have much pro time, and was not given a tremendous amount of receiver game time, but I think we will start to see a more physical possession receiver type game out of him. Especially since he’s been toughened up by the “return game” time he has had in the past. As a deep threat, he will be a good decoy because of his size and speed, and I’m still thinking about that great catch vs. Green Bay last season.
