A Conflict of Interest

I have been pondering the coaching situation and team identities recently, and I think our problem is our conflict between our defensive coordinator (Wade) and Offensive coordinator (Jason).  I feel as if our defense is meant to pressure the qb and create long passing situations.  On the other end our team needs to stray away from our passing attack.  I believe Wades defense needs to be complimented by a ball control hard nose running game in order to truly compliment our type of defense.  I saw too many shootouts last year, and I do not believe this compliments Wade's defensive strategy.  We need to be holding on to the ball and limit turnovers.  Jason looks for the big play too often, and hopefully he will look to settle down.  Jason is a very young and creative coordinator, but I do not believe he is right for our team.  We need to allow our defense to pin the opposing team in their side of the field and play field position, but turnovers are costly and ruin that aspect of the game.  Tony Romo is a great qb and I am very grateful to have him but he and Jason must learn to limit fumbles and interceptions.  Our defense is going to take us places and that is why Wade is still the coach.  I am tired of the WR talk it will be our run game and defense that takes us somewhere this year and those stupid shotgun run plays need to be taken out of our play book.  We do not need to trick the opposing team we need to rely on our defense to do their job and then just line up and run it down the opposing teams throats.  Something has to give and our identity needs to be declared this year.  The passing game has obviously not been working and it is time for us to compliment our strength in a very strong defense.  It is Wades turn to finally step up, and if he has to take over the offense as well.  It was a mistake to give Jason that much money and basically tell Wade to back off the head coach needs to have a say in the offense.  Run the ball already i do not care who our WRs are.

Good post

2009 is the year of the RB in Dallas.

Way too much talent at the position not to be running the ball atleast 60+ percent of the time.

Bash Dash & Tash have all proven themselves. I just hope we can somewhat keep Barber fresh for the 4th QTR. Split carries with Tashard & Felix in the 1st half & let Barber finish ’em off late in games just like he did on 07.

The only problem is Barber isnt getting paid ’"reserve" money.

Our offensive line needs to get their heads out of their collective asses.

Even though we have 3 really good RBs

our offense is still built around Romo and the passing mae, but we should become much more balanced as a result of having 3 good backs.

Also, our OL, even though they are huge, is really better suited to pass block than run block as Raf’s post pointed out.

I disagree our line is just as good at run blocking

I do not know who started this rumor but we averaged a very good 4.3 ypc last year, and if we had Felix that number would be way up there. We need to run the ball somewhere near 55 percent. The Gunslinger had his oppurtunity and he has failed so far.

not true

When we need to gets tough yards, our OL always comes up short. That 4.3 ypc is severely inflated due to the Cats big plays which was achieved by his blazing speed, not by the OLs massive holes.

Good points.

I’m glad to know that this team has the ability to compete in shootouts if need be.

Of course, the opposite could also be true. With the pressure Wade’s defense tends to create, last year we saw what happened when it broke (Ravens runs, Santonio’s catch on TNew, the 1st Iggles game). Big plays allowed by the D cause the O to have to go out and sling it a little more.

I agree with you that the running game and defense need to work more hand-in-hand by creating the tempo for the game, but until the D eliminates heart-breaking big plays and wins a majority of the 3rd-down battles, Romo and the gang will continue to QuickStrike.

To establish a dominant Run Game we need a dominate O-line!

Terry pointed out the fact that our O-line is big and better suited to pass block, however, they even fall short here a times; This is an old conversation and really not open for debate, because regardless of what reasoning or excuses you give for why it happens, the fact is there has been a sub-par play on the left side of the O-line for a few years now. Rotating guards, do to injury.and when healthy who ever was there lacked enough mass, muscle,or foot-speed to move people out or hold his space; old tackle who can’t move the way he once could and even at his best he would seem not to give his best effort every play; then last year he was left in to play one handed, because there was no viable back-up.

We can have 3 of the all time rushers in NFL history, plus any QB you want to pull out of your ass in the back field and WR from heaven and it would not, will not make any difference unless the O-line steps up at least 2 notches from past play. Yes, the occasional big play will be made, either by land or by air, but the consistent attack will still be just a wet dream. We maybe better at guard and have back ups if we stay healthy; but we are still old, and slow at left tackle even if Flo stays healthy.

I’m not knocking on Flo I think he still is in the upper 20 to 25% of NFL tackles; but he’s not even close to what he once was or even a shadow of what he could have been. Now, its to late to to make a real up-grade and to do so in the last draft would have probably cost us most of our picks and the 1st from next year. I’m sure the reason we are holding so many guards is because they will use Davis or Columbo to fill if Flo should go down; Our back-ups could fill right tackle or guard better than left tackle and either of those players would be better than the alternatives.

The answer? A top 5 pick, hopefully by trade and not by record or a major FA aquasition.
Just my view of the situation.
