The Valley Ranch Review: Mini-camp Report

The Dallas Cowboys returned to work for a three-day mini-camp on Monday.

Notes from the morning practice session at DC.com.

We made a couple of minor personnel moves.

To add some receiving depth, the team signed Willie Reid, a former third-round pick of the Steelers in 2006 who spent time on the Eagles’ practice squad last year. Punter Matt Fodge also was signed as a tryout and presumably to take some pressure off incumbent Mat McBriar’s leg.

Also noted was some good news, Rich Behm attended the morning session.

Felix Jones will be held out of the afternoon session with a leg contusion. Miles Austin and Sam Hurd are not practicing because of injuries. Igor Olshansky and Kyle Kosier are also sitting out the sessions.

The DMN blog says Nick Folk did some running and Mat McBriar was booming the ball.

Kicker Nick Folk took a significant step in his rehab from hip surgery by doing some light running around the track during this morning's practice. Punter Mat McBriar, who missed most of last season after breaking his foot in the OT loss to Arizona, has returned to Pro Bowl form. McBriar was booming the ball at the beginning of the morning practice.

More morning practice notes from the DMN blog.

DeMarcus Ware says that Wade Phillips is taking command of the defense.

At least that's what the team's top defender suggested when asked about Phillips "officially" taking over as defensive coordinator this season.

"We've got the main guy calling the plays now ... He's the dictator, telling everybody exactly what to do and how to do it," linebacker DeMarcus Ware said.

Greg Ellis is signing with the Raiders.

Some Good News There

It’s great to hear that McBriar is playing well. I have to admit that I’ve been pretty worried about our Punter’s broken foot returning to full form, especially after reports from last week that his foot was getting sore when he practiced on consecutive days. Hopefully everything works out in time for the season, and it’s good to see another camp-body at the position in the meantime.

Ware talking up Wade’s job as the D-Coordinator is promising as well. The D had some great games after Wade took over for Stewart and this D definitely has the talent to be among the league’s elite units with strong, consistent coaching. Looks like there should be an improvement on that side of the ball!

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

Reid

I live in Philadelphia and follow their roster pretty closely (and am VERY afraid of their beefed up O-Line, by the way), but think that Reid might be a good pickup for us.

He was never going to be much more than a punt return prospect for the Eagles. They have like 6 pretty good #3 receivers on that team, and didn’t want to cut a better receiver for the PR position when they have DeSean Jackson to do that.

To be clear, I DID NOT get a chance to see Reid return any punts, but the Eagles’ strength at the position at least gives credence to some of my optimism. In the same way that our 4th RB (Keon Lattimore) might make an impact on a few teams around this league, Reid could be the punt returner we’re looking for.

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

Letting Wikipedia chime in

He also did a good job of returning punts at Florida State, earning player of the game honors in the Orange Bowl for his 180 PUNT return yards, including an 87 yard punt return for a TD. I think they lost the game, but our latest pickup held his own, also adding 55 receiving yards.

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

I thought the same thing when I saw the signing yesterday

This pickup could turn out to be one of those “under-the-radar” deals that could help us out on special teams in ’09.

Here’s hoping ST Coach Joe can fully utilize Reid’s talents. He’s a speed-demon gamebreaker on returns.

Reid is a flat out punt return beast.

He is also the type of receiver we dont have. I hope he can make the squad.

Does it really matter?

I mean, it simply looks like there is a bunch of potential talent I say the more the merrier and may the best playmaker win.

Judging by what you guys are saying, it's nice to see them targeting a certain type of receiver

and one that we need.

We don’t exactly have that shifty/speedy guy who can give defenses a different type of look. Like the guy from camp last year many were rooting for, the Wes Welker type.

Punt returning alone might help him stick, especially if Hurd is hurt again.

You're talking about Danny Amendola

Who, by the way, is with the Eagles. Wish we still had him.

Glad to hear Ware calling Wade the Dictator. There must be some meaning to that. I’m having trouble picturing it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

Sounds like the defense is hitting on all cylinders while the offense continues to sputter. I know, I know, you don’t need to say it. I know it’s only mini-camp. I’ll just keep saying that. It’s only mini-camp, it’s only mini-camp, it’s only mini-camp, it’s only mini-camp, it’s only mini-camp, it’s only mini-camp.

Why?

Why wish we still had Amendola?

I’m not saying he won’t ever be bad, but he really didn’t show that much in the preseason to warrant a roster spot.

it was weird, I... I mean you probably didn't hear about it because I went under the name of Mike Honcho. But I just wanted you to know that. If you can hear me, if it got into your brain somehow. That I spread my buttcheeks as Mike Honcho.

by AirforceBat on Jun 15, 2009 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Not much to talk about tonight, huh?

Amendola had his moments. The Cowboys saw something in him. His fate was only sealed because of the Roy signing. The Cowboys weren’t the only team interested either. The Eagles, and a couple of other teams tried to sign him after the draft. I thought the kid had something, he just needed a year in the weight room. I mean it’s not like I think we blew it or anything. I just think he’s at least as good as some of the kids we have in camp right now.

Eh maybe.

He’s a practice squad guy who everyone fell in love with because he was a local guy that played for Texas Tech.

I love the fact that he is in there teaching more.

Thats his forte and its our best shot at getting back to the SB. I think this D needs to lead us back to playoff wins.

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the goverment from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

With all due respect, I'd rather have Willie Reid than Danny Amendola

Ellis to the Raiders...

I don’t know much (any?) about the Raiders. And frankly I don’t care to. The AFC is boring. All that matters is that Ellis won’t be playing against us in the NFC East — and that we’ll see him only once this year.

Btw., I think that Ellis left the Cowboys in good terms, that Jerry was upfront and loyal to him and that he showed this by releasing Greg early in the offseason. I don’t think Ellis should have a personal vendetta against the Cowboys. Or at least, I don’t think he ought to have one.

Regarding Greg

The fact that Ellis decided to sign with the Raiders speaks volumes to where his motivations lie.

There are two reasons he’d sign with the Siver and Black: money or playing time. The reason missing from that list, winning.

I guess you can’t blame the guy for taking care of his money, but the Raiders, WOW!

by T. on Jun 15, 2009 7:32 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

I noted in the last post that I would like to play in Oakland, but it would mostly be for my own comfort. The weather is perfect, San Francisco and Napa are nearby, and the Raiders don’t mind if you’re not working that hard.
It’s the perfect place for someone with my ambition-and therefore a bad place for the kind of player I want on the Cowboys.

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

by NICK L on Jun 15, 2009 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I second that...

in the end Greg was just looking for money it appears…..Happy to see he is out of the conference..See ya!! We also won’t have to pay that 1.5 Mil owed to him since the raiders overpaid him as they usual do to FA’s.

by Boyzfan94 on Jun 15, 2009 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Whatever the numbers, one thing is for sure:

It won’t be enough for Greg as early as this year’s training camp, when he goes on his usual whining spree.

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

Austin hurt again?

This record seems to be severely broken. Hasn’t even been hit in a game yet, how much longer?

My thoughts exactly......

and for those that have already “annointed” him as the next great receiver, ya might wanna re-think it right?

by texstar on Jun 16, 2009 8:09 AM CDT up reply actions

it's only June

I wouldn’t push the “here we go again” panic button until TC.

I'm not panicing......

but apparently Wade agrees with me as well according to DC Fanatic.

by texstar on Jun 16, 2009 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Injuries in the off season arent the same as in season. This is the time to get fully healed. Nobody silences his critics in the off season.

We shouldnt annoit him but you shouldnt condem him either.

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the goverment from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

by squidlo97 on Jun 16, 2009 9:50 AM CDT reply actions

I'm by no means "condemning" him.........

(that’s a pretty harsh word btw) but some of you act like he’s going to just step right in where T.O. left off and not skip a beat. I truly hope that he does but I wouldn’t put all my eggs in that basket. He has a tendency to be injury prone which sends a red flag up for me.

by texstar on Jun 16, 2009 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions

nobody is saying that he's going to replace T.O.

we’re just saying he can replace him as a deep threat which he obviously can. All the WRs will have to step up to replace T.O.s production, which I think they can.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Jun 16, 2009 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not going to do it,

but if one goes back the last couple of seasons, I bet you find more articles/mentions of Austin being injured than you will about anything else he has done. I like the dude, but this isn’t about whether I like a player or not, it is about him being available to play and not riding the stationary bike on the sideline.

When did I become a Cowboy fan? When my mom told me I was.

by GunsUp on Jun 16, 2009 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Nobody but nobody thinks he will replace TO.

Annoiting is another over the top word. Im excited about a long shot FA getting a shot at the big time. I think his speed will give others some room. Im on record for around 50 catches and 6-8 TDs and a plus 15 ypc average. thats all we need from him. He has shown enough flashes to have hope.

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the goverment from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
