BTB Exclusive: Jay Ratliff Interview (6/18/2009)

I had the pleasure of interviewing Jay Ratliff earlier today. The audio is below.

Jay gave a great interview, answering all the questions with candor and information. He talks about the backup NT battle, even mentioning Marcus Spears as a possible candidate, noting that in mini-camp they put him in there every once in a while. He also thinks Junior Siavii has made a lot of progress and could make his move.

The Rat also gave us some juice on his conversion to NT in the Bill Parcells' era. Listen to him describe Parcells throwing him into the fire as a NT one game, without a lot of training at the position.

Ratliff also touched on topics like his size as a NT, how much double-teaming he sees in a game (hint: it's a lot), and the additions of Keith Brooking and Igor Olshansky.

Also, Rat gives huge props to OLB Brandon Williams, who he says is a guy you need to watch out for. You'll love what Jay says about the kid.

Thanks to Jay for taking the time to do the interview. He's one of BTB's favorite players, now we love him even more.

Interview below.

BTB Rules

At a time when Cowboy fans are starved for information related to their team, we appreciate the efforts of all the folks that contribute to this blog.

Rat IMO is one of the most underrated players in the league

The dude has a motor that is non stop, definitely one of my favorite Cowboys.

Completely

I was shocked to see his placement, or lack thereof, on the top DT and most important player lists.

Good Q&A, Grizz

Thanks for your superb work, Dave.

Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.

Good to hear Oskie

I tried to ask questions that I thought people would want to hear. Raf, who was unable to make the interview becasue of a prior appointment, sent me a couple of the questions I asked.

Yo Dave...

has anyone ever told you that your voice sounds a lot like Mel Kiper’s? Nice interview of the Rat. I don’t care what the Chinese calendar says, this will be the year of the Rat!

Loved the comments about Brandon Williams...

I’ve been waiting for any little piece of news to seperate our two pass rushers Williams and Butler, and that is some encouraging news that he’s caught the eye of Ware and Ratliff already and his stats show he can get after the QB.

One thing I’m excited about is how this defense is going to attack more, it’s going to be exciting to see it all in play.

Nice work as always Grizz

I think Phillips was the one who wanted to draft Williams. Wade definitely has an eye for pass rushers.

Great Interview of a Great Player

Thanks to Grizz and Jay Ratliff for the interview. He’s one of my favorite players, I still marvel how he overcame being a seventh-round pick to become one of the best defensive linemen in the league.

Much appreciated.

Ratliff

is my FAVORITE defensive player. I give him the nod over Demarcus because of his awesome sack move and enthusiasm.

really cool

I appreciate this interview. Great work!

Grizz you should have asked him if he had to work on his Leonard Davis impression

that would have an awesome question to ask, maybe next time.

Spears up the gut?

Though many others have suggested this, including myself, I don’t think Spears will back up Rat unless Junior doesn’t pan out. They just want to keep their options open.

I like the idea of the first thing he mentioned was that the player harmony is back. I think it’s underrated in today’s game. Players need to concentrate on the game, and they can’t focus as well when they have to worry about politics.

The Rat likes the rooks. Good news. Does Wade know his defenders or what? Wouldn’t it be something if the Pokes had a top 3 defense this year?

Thanks Grizz. You Raf, Carl, Aaron, & Dave have a great thing going here. Props.

Great interview!

I’m new to this site, do y’all often get interviews like that with players?

by krl97a on Jun 18, 2009 10:41 PM CDT reply actions

I'd like to them more often...

but it takes a little work to set them up and this one didn’t generate a lot of commentary. I thought there would be more discussion of what Jay had to say.

Should I keep working to do these? I only want to do them if they are generating commentary.

by Dave Halprin on Jun 19, 2009 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions

hell yes you should keep doing them!

Interviews from BTB will easily be the best around because you, along with the rest of BTB, form questions daily with all the discussions we have. You can take those and relay them in the interviews. I think BTB interviews should most definitely continue.

Grizz the questions were good, but this site is a new forum, consider this a 1st step

and a learning experience.

Please keep doing them.

I don’t think there are few comments due to lack of interest, just more that there’s not much to add. Great interview that covered the bases, thanks. Thanks to Jay for taking the time for us, too.

by Baked Potato Soup on Jun 19, 2009 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

Controversy breeds commentary. In this case the questions were good and Ratliff’s answers were straightforward and informative so there really isn’t much to argue about.

Definately would love more interviews

I was surprised there wasn’t more comments but this stuff is what sets BTB apart, I try and tell as many people as I can about this site because it’s hand down the best Cowboys site period. The questions were great, and Rat gave great insight on the situation with Parcells, and instead of just saying “all the guys look good” he went against the grain and gave Brandon Williams some love.

I wouldn’t mind more of these and it’ll only generate more interest as more come along…Scandrick, Sensabaugh, Newman, and Choice are some other guys I wouldn’t mind hearing from, but I appreciate this hard work you guys do over here and this site is only getting better.

Now we're talkin!

Great job Grizz, not only by getting Ratt to participate, but for asking the questions we’ve all been pondering but never got direct answers to. Hope we can get more like this in the future.

Much obliged!

Man, this is awesome

Grizz, if you want my $.02, keep doing these interviews. I got more out of this interview than any player interview I’ve seen on DCHN (The Dallas Cowboys Hater Network).

How Bout Them Cowboys!

by sprprsnmn on Jun 19, 2009 8:32 PM CDT reply actions

Sick a$$ interview, Dudes!

Rat is my fav on defense. I like what he said about guys being versatile. There seems to be so much concern about who is gonna back him up, but I think the Boys are cool with what they’ve got. We can’t go into every season being three-deep at every position.

Prediction: I think Siavii will show his strength this preseason and we can sneak that Seawright guy on the PS. If necessary, Spears or Bowens can swing inside, which could help get Hatcher some playtime at End.

Remember, Wade’s D won’t be too heavy on the standard 34 alignment—like BP’s was. He likes players with versatility, which means they will be running more 4 and 5 man fronts depending on the game situation. If any defense can survive and be productive w/o some mammoth tackle, it’s this one. Obviously, the staff feels the same way because they didn’t address the position at all in the draft.
