I agree with everything except
that I think we keep 6 WRs instead of 10 DBs with Brown being the odd man out.

I think Brown has been playing out of position the last two years
he is a CB and we were trying to play him at safety. Maybe his hips aren’t the greatest but is great size and incredible speed more than makes up for that, which makes him a valuable asset when covering those bigger receivers.
The other receivers are a dime a dozen. They don’t have any unique physical ability like Courtney Brown, moreover I don’t like going into the season with only 9 DBs.

I just have a feeling the Boys will keep 6 WRs
just a hunch on my part…but we’ll see.

Agreed
I don’t think it’s wise to go into the season with only five receivers when three of them lost significant time to injury last year.
Garrett needs to get a clue!

You act like one of these scrubs could do anything productive if we had to give them any playing time
If are receiver corps starts getting riddled with injuries, Jerry will sign a veteran or trade for one; not put Ogletree or Johnson on the field. Maybe they could amount to something down the road, but not this year.

what if one of those so called scrubs
turns out to be a great returner…just saying?

That's what we drafted Deangelo Smith for
And I don’t think Manny Johnson or Ogletree have done much returning at their respective colleges, but I could be wrong.
The only way either of them makes the roster is if they can beat out Stanback, either because he has regressed or his injury problems have become an issue.

neither one of them returned punts during their college careers...neither played special team- kicking teams, or return teams...longshots, both of them...
If anything, one of them will beat out Hurd., if they show enough in pre-season on ST. But you can forget either taking a KO return position…not happening…

That's an awful thin DL you have there....
also, your prediction that Holland will be good enough after 1 Training Camp to replace proctor at back up center is pretty optimistic, ( am I right or not about Proctor as the back up center?).
I see Williams or Butler heading practice squad way if you can believe any of the media BS. However, that will be sorted out in TC.
I also noticed none of the FA guards made the TC. There are a couple that have a great chance especially since we may need to groom a center and a couple of those guys were actually pretty decent prospects, if you can believe the Mock Draft write ups.
I also see another WR on the squad, were they get the spot I don’t know. I here they were trying a lot of people at LS. This is not a position to be toyed with, but it sure would benefit LP and the Cowboys if he would learn another position now wouldn’t it.
Anyway, all in all, your predictions are pretty good based on what we know right now.

actually I like our depth at DE

Could Holland do any worse than Procter?
I don’t think so. Moreover, guards can be converted to centers rather easily. I’m more inclined to think that Holland could play center than couldn’t.
For a fourth rounder to get kicked down to the PS they would have to suck, and by suck I mean Skyler Green suck. That would also leave us awfully thin at OLB, considering that Wade at times like three edge rushers on the field at the same time and if one of them gets injured we would only have two.
I had center Matt Spanos making the practice squad. Go back and look at my post.
They are trying a lot of people at LS probably as an emergency LS in case L.P. gets hurt.
Thanks.

Proctor isn't going anywhere
You need to add him to your roster.
He’s the only guy who can back up at center right now. I’m getting awful reports on Holland. The thought that he can back up Gurode, having never played C before, is rose colored conjecture at this point.
I’d lop McQuistan off this list and add Proctor.
by Rafael Vela on Jun 25, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hmmm well I will defer to you on that one
Hopefully one of the UDFA’s can beat him out in TC though.
by quincyyyyy on Jun 25, 2009 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If the reports are based on OTA's alone
then I’d hold off on the judgments. Blocking a guy with pads on is a far easier task than without. I only say this because I can’t stomach the thought that he’s worse than Proctor.

Proctor Makes The Team
Proctor is the most unfairly picked on player in recent history. The offensive line problems last year were significant and Proctor had his share of mistakes. Proctor might be a bit undersized for left guard and he had a couple of really bad games. On the other hand, Proctor was responsible for some great downfield blocks that triggered some of Tashard’s runs; Proctor is not that bad when he pulls and leads the blocking on the end arounds. I think Proctor makes the team and I bet he stays for a while turning into a servicable member of the o-line for years to come.

Dixon will make the squad
Junior will not.
I have a feeling that Spears will rotate in at NT.
Dixon is a better DE than Junior is a NT.

I thought the same
A lot depends on what the rotation will end up, and if the Boys pick up a camp cut NT. But if I had to pick straight up Dixon vs Siavii for the final DL spot, right now I think Dixon wins.

I actually think there is a chance that Dixon could beat out Hatcher
Hatch seemed to sort of plateau last season. He is going to have to show progress in TC to keep his job.

Dixson is marginal at his position; at least Junior has the physical size to occupy space in the middle.

11 of 12 rookies on the 53 man roster ...
… with only Manny Johnson relegated to the Practice Squad. If that were so, this would have been one heck of a draft, but how realistic are 11 rookies?
by One.Cool.Customer on Jun 25, 2009 2:21 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think very realistic
Most of these rookies will probably beat out the current backups at their positions. I think all of the LBs drafted are locks and I’d be really surprised if all of the DBs didn’t make the team as well.
Of course McGee is a lock as well and Buehler would have to really bomb (no pun intended) to get cut.

I'm not sure about having 5 ILB unless a couple of them are special teams studs
I’m also not sure about 11 of 12 rookies making the 53 man roster. If 11 second day draftees made the 53 man roster it would have to be a record.

one immediate flaw in that
you kept 9 OL and none of them can adequately back up groude. you might say Holland, but he has sucked as a center in OTAs. can’t even snap the ball. and he has never played the position. say what you want about proctor, but he is the only truly back up center we have on the team.
I also think Dixon will make it over Bowen.
I also think Beuhler will not make it, and we will see proctor.
Stanback will get injured and go on IR and we will see Ogltree.

he is the only one with some girth
and in phillips’ scheme he will be asked to eat up space in about 10 plays or so to give rat some rest. the others don’t have the athleticism or girth required to play NT.

Beuhler
I think there’s almost no way this guy doesn’t make the team. The only scenario I can come up with is if Folk has really improved his leg strength. Do you have any idea how much a legit kicker can improve a team? It’s all about field position, and I’d say he’ll be just as important as McBriar and Folk. It sucks that we have to carry 3 kickers, but they are each major weapons in their own right. If it comes down to a guy who may never see the field vs a guy who can get touch-backs semi-regularly, I’ll take the touch-backs every time.

Plus if he is athletic enough to play on punt return units, you don’t lose anything by carrying him on game day over a backup LB or S.

Here's some twists
Two of the UDFA O-Lineman will make the Practice Squad…most likely Isdaner and Turkovich, though Gibbons could make another run and remain there.
As for roster switches:
TE: Hannah for Phillips with Phillips to the PS
OL: It’s a 3-way battle for 2 spots. McQ vs Free vs Proctor. McQuistan’s the odd man out
DL: Dixon in, Siavii out. But I like your take, just don’t see Bowen getting cut. Maybe Dixon for 5th ILB.
LB: Matt Stewart is probably going to make the squad. If he can longsnap, LP may be gone.
DB: 2 of your guys are most likely gone. It’ll be Brown vs Ball for one, and the rookies fighting not to be the odd man out when the music stops. But whomever will land on the PS.
It's not personal, it's just business
by Fighter15 on Jun 25, 2009 4:39 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The only way we keep Stewart is if we have 5 ILB's and Carp gets cut
And maybe you can make a case for Brown being cut, but Ball has been a coach favorite since he has been drafted. I would be extremely surprised if he was cut. And I think Brown and Ball has gotten too much playing time to land on a practice squad.
by quincyyyyy on Jun 25, 2009 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I differ because
I think Phillips is in because hannah can’t block as well and is not polished and we already have two pass catching TEs. Phillips is a lot like curtis, except he maybe a better blocker and in our scheme the TE plays like an HB in the backfield sometimes and Hannah can’t do that yet. Hannah is destined for PS one more year.
I think we keep 10 OL. Holland doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy. the LG position is a position battle too watch this camp, specially with Kosier’s health issues.
I think Savaii is in, mainly because of girth. Dixon doesn’t have rat’s athleticism or savaii’s girth. Jr. will be asked to play about 10 plays a game to give rat some rest. dixon is proably better suited to play DE anyway.
the LS is a camp battle and it requires consistancy. Does stewart offer anything more than LS duties? if not, then why not keep the one you have. Stewart maybe a LB in name, but how many plays do we expect him to make or even see the field? he could be pushed to PS, in case of injuries then you callhim up.
I think brown is going to be the odd man out. ball has shown better preparation and he has played the FS adequetley. so I don’t think its a battle between ball and brown, but between brown and mike hamlin.
by CowboysFanatic on Jun 26, 2009 9:22 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Everyone is discounting Spears
He has plenty of depth behind him (Dixon, Hatcher, Bowen) thus allowing him an opportunity for more time by playing backup NT to rest Ratliff.
He will now have 2 offseasons of practice because the coaches have been working him there.
Spears could add another pound or two quite easily. He’s also a willing player that, especially last year, flashed some serious talent. Dixon is also getting some time inside.
The last point that I’ll be making ad nauseum is that this defense only plays the base 3-4 about 50% of the time anyway giving plenty of opportunities for rest for Rat.
BTW, he’d rather be on the field and plays only to a Pro Bowl level…hmmm…yeah, I guess I’d get him out of there…

Good list
I do wonder if Dixon can beat out Hatcher, coaches seem really high on him
Stanback- if healthy he is on the team, big IF though
Phillips- really like him being on there, for our 3rd TE he needs to be a good blocker and Hannah seems more of a receiver
I don’t think we keep both Ball and Brown (maybe to allow Dixon and Hatcher to be on the team) both are going to be the same CB/S with Deangelo Smith.
I do think Carp makes it as well.
Unfortunately I think Proctor is on our team again but if Holland is crapping it up he might be gone
Good post.. can’t wait till next year’s highly anticipated mock drafts.. but can’t wait for the season more

Why I think most of the rookies will make the 53
Maybe Im dreaming here, but I think JJ may be willing to show a little patience this year and keep the rookies who show more upside/potential than the backups we have or could get from the waiver wire. Even if it were to cost us a theoretical game or two this year. As long as the team plays solid, not necessarily spectacular, but solid in all three phases, I think Wade and Red keep their jobs too. And here is why. We host SB 45.
I think JJ would be satisified with a less successful season this year (hopefully make a small of a playoff run) if he and the coaches think it will help have the overall team more ready nad more seasoned for the 2010 season. I think JJ would love NOTHING more than to be the first team to ever play (and win) a SB in its own house.
Just a hunch.

I would reserve any judgements about the OL and DL until TC. As for the other battles, I think the roster you wrote up is pretty close to what it will be.
