Week 3 of OTAs is a Wrap!
The Cowboys finished up their organized team activities for the week, today. Hopefully, next week won't have as many absences. Here is today's list courtesy of the DMNblog:
K Nick Folk, WR Travis Wilson, WR Sam Hurd, WR Miles Austin, S Courtney Brown, CB Mike Mickens, FB Deon Anderson, CB Terence Newman, TE Rodney Hannah, LB Justin Rogers, LB Stephen Hodge, LB Bradie James, LB Victor Butler,G Kyle Kosier, OT Michael Turkovich, WR Isaiah Stanback, DT Tim Anderson, and DE Jason Hatcher
(Bradie James is on his honeymoon! Congrats.)
Josh Ellis and Tim McMahon's observations included some intriguing stuff. Who would've thought the day the media had access to practice that the Cowboys would run the WildCat Razorback?
- The "Razorback"-- as Ellis said Wade Phillips called it--featured Patrick Crayton at QB, with Felix Jones in motion and Tony Romo as a split end. Sweet!
- Both Ellis and McMahon said Felix practiced as a punt returner; both also said he looked rather inexperienced doing so.
- SS Gerald Sensabaugh, again, looked to be impressive in coverage drills.
- Ellis noted that the return of WR Mike Jefferson was not only highlighted by his "rocked-up" upper torso, but also that he saw time with the 1st-team offense in multiple WR sets. Jefferson wore #81.
- Rookie TE John Phillips looks more comfortable in the H-back position, than 2nd-year pro Martellus Bennett.
- LBs coach Reggie Herring praised rookie ILB Jason Williams for his coverage skills.
- CB Terence Newman sat out with a minor quad injury.
- Both McMahon and Ellis wrote that although Romo looked inconsistent early, he heated up. McMahon said that Romo and Witten finally "clicked" later on after the QB missed his wide-open TE several times early.
- Rookie QB Stephen McGee got some more action than previously seen in other media-friendly practices. McGee impressed with his ability to avoid the rush and his accuracy on short passes (under 15 yards).
- Bobby Carpenter split time with Jason Williams in sub packages while Bradie James was out.

I'm not worried but I am annoyed
with how on every OTA report that start off by saying Romo wasn’t at his best… Pick it up ROMO!!

obviously they do
If Wade is holding out players with very minor injuries. Face it, OTAs are really for rookies and new FAs to learn our system and learn new installments in the offense and defense.
It’s really not that important to the vets which is why they are non mandatory workouts.

I'm not sayin bench him...
I’m just saying so far he hasn’t had a great day and mostly its his accuracy that has been the issue

Every year some fans get overly excited by some guy who’s “looking good” at OTA’s or early in camp.
“Mt. Stanley” or whatever nickname that guy had, some safeties and LB’s.

BPS and Realist, I'm usually immersed in the optimist's camp, but here I agree...
1. You’ll hear glowing reports on players based on one or two plays. As in any sport, it’s not the occasional great play that gets you on the team, instead it’s the good / better plays – made consistently. These glowing reports often reflect a player having a good day … they need a good 12 weeks to make the team.
2. Terry, I disagree on the “don’t worry about Romo, it’s only OTAs” theory. I like to use the Michael Jordan example. He came to play – 100% – every day… so much so that teammates would get frustrated at his intensity in practice! I want / expect that level of dedication from my QB — there’s no time of the year for playing poorly. I usually defend Romo (and think the JesSimp thing is more media than reality) … but only because I hear he’s working hard…
3. Many of the no-shows don’t bother me – even Newman’s … but Austin and Hurd? These are the two biggest question marks going into the year. The guys we hope can steal some of Crayton’s time. They should be trying to have their A-game BEFORE TC starts. I hope Jefferson pushes this receiving corps, but not sure I want a journeyman taking a spot – it would speak more to what is missing.
Stanback, Hurd and Austin need to get back on the field ASAP and have a fire up their butts. It’s now or never; they’re getting handed a golden opportunity to succeed on the big stage – GET IT DONE!
Now back to my regularly scheduled optimism…

Good Points
I can go either way when it’s this early.
It’s hard to get worried in June, and hard to get excited if some rookie’s lighting it up too.
As training camp goes on, though, it starts to mean more.
I agree about those receivers being on the field, but I guess they don’t want a small njury to get worse……..

Save it for camp!
Every year they get nicked up,let the new guys learn, get some reps gain some confidence. It worked last year with the DBs, Save it for when they really
need ‘em in December. Just like a set of tires, miles are miles, but if you don’t beat the hell out of them you can get more miles and less wear.
Besides if you look at the list I’m pretty sure the coaches are just getting more 1on1
with certain players or personel groups or 1st year Cowboys. Bennett+Witten more reps.,Rookie LB+DBs more reps.,Psquad guys Crosslin+Dixon more reps. Romo+Williams more reps

Romo has looked like crap in every OTA Terry.....
They commented on DC.com that he looked like Quincy Carter the way the ball has come out if his hand….Even though it’s OTA’s you would expect him to be a little crisper after 3 OTA’s..

Ranch report said he looks fine
Up and down: It’s a minor detail to the casual observer, but part of the art of throwing deep passes on the sideline is the quarterback’s ability to "turn the ball over," so the nose of the ball follows the intended receiver and points down after reaching it’s peak, increasing the passer’s ability to drop the ball over his receiver’s outside shoulder where either the receiver can make the catch or nobody will. Starter Tony Romo was the best at "turning the ball over" consistently, regardless of whether the wind was at his back or in his face (which makes it much more difficult), followed by Jon Kitna and Stephen McGee, while Rudy Carpenter’s passes remained pointed upward the whole way. Not coincidentally, the first three were more accurate than Carpenter on drills that called for passes of 20 or more yards down the sideline.

No, not in my opinion
He started every game in the league 4 straight seasons before 07, then he missed a couple games with the foot injury (came back and made the Pro Bowl), and last season he had a hernia that wasn’t correctly treated initially, which caused him to miss more time than he would have if it was diagnosed and treated properly (surgery).

Is Sensabaugh that much better or are the receivers just not that great?
and could Romo’s early inaccuracy have something to do with it?

I don’t take the reports of how great these guys are looking in coverage in shorts any more seriously than I worry about reports of Romo not looking so hot. When I see them do it regularly in real games, I’ll sing their praises.
by Baked Potato Soup on Jun 4, 2009 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
none of these questions are answerable right now
It’s really hard to get a read on the team until the games really count.
Still I’m almost 100% sure we’ll get better coverage in the secondary this year, and even manage to mitigate the big play down field. This alone may be enough to unleash an aggressive pass-rush attack.
Some analysts write that Sensabaugh is a good player to have but not a starter. As best I can tell, he’s considered poor in run support. I’m hoping our front 7 will prevent that from being an issue

I'm not saying he's Ronnie Lott..
But to add some of my own realism to this mix, in a football game the offense has the advantage. They know the count, the receivers and QB know where the routes are to be run and passes are to be thrown. There are checkdowns and alternate routes if the D happens to be in position. The defender is going on pure athleticism and reaction.
Now, move this scenario into a 7 on 7 drill or OTAs and the offense gets even more advantage. No contact means the receivers are not jammed at the line, the QB is under zero pressure. Granted, the DBs don’t have to play the run, but the passing game is heavily weighted to the offense. A guy playing coverage under these circumstances is going on pure reaction, instincts and physical skill. If a guy shows he can cover under these circumstances, he’s showing some good skills that will translate to the game. I don’t think that should be totally discounted.
Finally, lest the ‘realists’ in the group accuse me of being a Sensabaugh stooge, I think he is probably an average safety. But to a man crawling through the desert, a simple cup of water is a blessed thing. We have had a pretty long dry spell at good safety play.
"He has a peculiar felicity of expression." John Adams
by Jim Vance on Jun 5, 2009 7:56 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree, if sensabaugh can come in and be a servicable safety on run and pass,
then he can get a better deal with another team, but I do think that the team has drafted and has other options (unlike when they had to sign hamlin) so they can turn to next year’s draft which will have a better crop of safeties available. So to me sensabaugh could fit the bill nicley for this year and if he wants too much to stay he can be let go.

by mahuebel on Jun 4, 2009 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No no no...it works like this...
Romo lines up out wide at WR on the right…
Snap to Crayton, hand off to Felix who runs left then throws it back to Crayton who passes out to Romo who runs a reverse hands it to Felix for a double reverse who throws it back to Crayton who throws it over to Romo then another double reverse with Felix and then triple with a hand off to Crayton who then…oops…Flo got called for holding….dang
Honestly I hope we don’t see any wildcat…so much was run last year I think defenses will be ready for it…I don’t think anyone will see much success with it this season.

Romo in the huddle, as AirforceBat said, adds an element of surprise to the package.

I like the idea of Romo in motion to take the snap… hope they do this once every couple of weeks. Romo split out – and pulling a Leak – would make me laugh.

And they have to account for him in case he runs over and goes back under center. Or, if they start not covering him, they throw a cross field lateral to him and he throws a bomb or whatever.
by Baked Potato Soup on Jun 4, 2009 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Plus, it's the element of surprise.
They don’t want the other team to know when it’s coming, so they have to have the normal players in the huddle. And as the article implies, it’s not random that they showed that formation when the press was there. They want other teams worrying about it being in their arsenal whether they ever use it or not.

Most CBs average 190lbs and QBs 225lbs. You dont pull a LB or safety on the QB out wide cause its a running play. QBs have good hands because they actually play alot of catch so the CB has to respect him by not crashing down on a run.

they should use McGee or even that new kicker we have instead of Romo. Hell, we have 3 stud running backs, just use all of them in the wildcat, if we are going to actually use it.
The difference between us using it this year, is that there will be no element of surprise. The Ravens showed everyone how to defend it, and they will not hesitate to knock the crap out of Romo if they are given the opportunity.

Well not really.....he can play..
They will carry 3 QB’s on game day…remember the 3rd QB rule…..
“Teams will be permitted an Active List of 45 players and an Inactive List of eight players for each regular-season and postseason game. Provided that a club has two quarterbacks on its 45-player Active List, a third quarterback from its Inactive List is permitted to dress for the game, but if he enters the game during the first three quarters, the other two quarterbacks are thereafter prohibited from playing.”
The third quarterback is the 46th player, so you don’t have to waste a 45th spot on a guy who will, in all likelihood, never play. It used to be if the third guy went in anytime, the other two couldn’t play, but they changed it a few years back.
Basically, the third guy is for an emergency. And keeping the other two guys from playing makes sure you keep his use to emergency situations.

I used to stop at the Barnes and Noble to read their “Sporting News” in the offseason to see what was going on!
Maybe people in Dallas w/ the local papers fretted.

I really hope garrett gets creative this year.
History says otherwise. If the best he can do is a copy cat of the wild cat. I guess I’ll take it, but I’d prefer something more unexpected or new. Just keep those defenses guessing.

The NFL is a copy-cat league
Until defenses prove they can stop it, teams will run it.
Felix also has years of experience running it, so why not include it in our packages. If Romo steps back in and takes the snap half the time, we’ve accomplished what you asked for – keep those defenses guessing.
Tar Heels = National Champs in Basketball ... #1 in Baseball ... Top 10 this year in Football?

Felix in a new formation sounds great
but I think the blueprint to stop it is already there so i doubt it will last long without some tweaks. Putting in a real passing threat could be a start. Maybe that’s why miami drafted pat white. I agree though if it works, use it, but do something different if it doesn’t work.

Wade
said one reason we are seeing the Razorback/Wildcat in OTAs is to familiarize the D on how to deal with it because we will probably be seeing some of it from other teams. Scout team stuff.
Still, I would like to see us do some original razzle-dazzle instead of copying the wildcat.
Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.

Dallas wouldn't be explicitly copying it
Miami has a better QB option for the Wildcat than Dallas has- Brown was very good at that roll, as was Darren McFadden. Dallas has a better option at the TB spot in the formation though – that role is perfect for Felix Jones; that’s the slot Ricky Williams had in Miami

Red Ball
should use our players’ strengths to devise a Razorback formation that is different from the Wildcat.

Copy-Cats
Please name something that hasn’t been renamed, rehashed, dusted off and reused. Football’s been around a lot longer than the NFL

Remember
during the scab season when the real players were out on strike and the teams were playing with guys off the street? I think it was Bill Walsh who lined his offense up in the single wing, and I believe it was Bill Parcells on the other side of the field. Tuna looked over at Walsh and raised his hands in a what-the-hell-is-this gesture, to which Walsh shrugged with a slightly embarrassed smile.
Old wine in new bottles.
Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.

I would like to spend a little more time on our base offense.
We got enough there going on to keep us busy for a while.
The fact that OTAs are for learning and the passing game is not sharp is not a problem. Its the same offense but the truth of the matter is the roles are different or expanding. As desperate as I am for information on my team I almost wish there was less this time of year. You think Roger had to deal with this. Hell no, he was selling real estate this time of year.
Its nice to know they are working together. Its nice to know they are disappointed in there play last year. After that every thing else is B.S. There are many questions that have to be answered and unfortunately wont be until late August. Even then I can see some phases of our team struggling for a couple of more weeks getting in sync.
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the goverment from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
