No interest in Matt Jones
In the same event that JJ spoke about pacman he also talked about another FA named jones.
Apparently JJ has no interest in Matt Jones but was reconsidering pacman. I think a commentor on this subject had the right idea, he wanted some pub, he was feeling good on the opening of his new stadium and just let the idea hang out there. I would personally be disappointed if pacman came back because I do not know how he can reassure anyone in that lockerroom that he will be someone they can depend on.

Hopefully..
But there were alot of people on here for some reason that wanted Matt Jones……He is a scrub and hasn’t lived up to anything…..Another project gone bad…We have one in the making (Stanbach) we don’t need another….

You're seriously comparing Matt Jones to Stanback?
For the record, I don’t want Matt Jones.. but he actually was off to a pretty damn good season before getting suspended.
He was on pace last year for almost 90 catches and around 1000 yards.
That’s really not that bad.
Oh I forgot, taking players of one position and trying to make them another is just a stupid project. Man I wish that Darren Woodson never played for us, what a waste of time.
it was weird, I... I mean you probably didn't hear about it because I went under the name of Mike Honcho. But I just wanted you to know that. If you can hear me, if it got into your brain somehow. That I spread my buttcheeks as Mike Honcho.

Ok, my bad.....Matt Jones is alot better WR than Stanbach is or will ever be....
I guess in Matt Jones case he has stayed healthy and has showed he can play the position. He will never be as good where he is drafted. For that reason he is a busted project.
Woodson moving from LB to safety is no where near as hard as QB to WR…..not even a good comparison.

THAT is true.
Drafting a QB in the first round and him being just a good WR is what I’d call a bust but thats not the issue.

"good comparison"?
It’s still a position change, a PROJECT.
You didn’t specify which projects were worthwhile.
Maybe Bobby Carpenter can move to safety, I mean going to Ohio State generally gives you superhuman abilities…

Don't need a corner, but we could probably use another WR
No to Adam, maybe to Matt, Jerry? Just consider it, jeez. We’re one injury to RW away from having Crayton and Austin as starters. I love me some Miles Austin and hope he gets the nod to start opposite Roy, but the dude is injury prone, and Crayton’s solid, but he’s not scaring any defense. Roy’s even a risky proposition, considering his terrible showing in ’08.
…if only Stanback actually showed he could be a player in the NFL, I’d be a lot less frightened. But that’s clearly not going to happen. Guy can’t even manage to get on the field.

but I agree with this post. I wouldnt mind seeing Matt Jones here.

I agree with this as well
Bring in Matt Jones! We could use a WR. We brought in that Sensabaugh guy and he has had a few run-ins with the law. We obviously aren’t trying to clean up that bad. Besides, you don’t need a bunch of boy scouts to have a successful football team. They just need to be good teammates.

im on board...
count me in… IF
1. he’s cheap
2. he backs up roy
3. he doesn’t take snaps away from austin
4. he’s primarily grabbed up to get groomed by our great receivers coaches for a year or two

The Cowboys' locker room is a like a brand new garage
…it is sparkling clean after clipping T.O., Tank, Roy, Ellis and Pacrat.
Matt Jones is like an old car with an oil leak.
Let’s let him park somewhere else.

matt jones can help some team.
i can’t understand why someone doesn’t pick up matt jones. talk about a player to run the wildcat, not to mention an emergency qb. 0akland would be another possibility

I can't believe you guys.....
He would be at best the #4 WR on this team…He is not beating out RW, Austin or Crayton….

Not that I am wild about the idea...
but if Matt Jones was a Cowboy you’d rank Austin ahead of him based on what? Potential?
To be honest guys, I am nervous about our receiving corps. Once you get past RW and Crayton you are dangerously thin in terms of experience. After those two all we have are role players who have had a hard time staying on the field. Stanback appears too fragile for the NFL, Hurd is an ankle sprain waiting to happen and while Austin doesn’t really have a history of injuries he did get dinged up on special teams last year.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Miles Austin and would LOVE to see him break out this year. I am pulling for the kid big time. But what happens if RW or Crayton should get banged up and have to sit out a few games???
Whether it’s Matt Jones or some one else I think we need another veteran receiver on the team and we need him now so that he can learn the offense during training camp. Brining someone in at the end of camp puts him too far behind the learning curve and limits his ability to contribute right away.
All I am saying is that everybody hates to shell out for insurance but there is a reason you pay that bill.

You got issues if your putting Matt Jones ahead of Austin.....
Stop living the pipe dream because he is not coming here…..

i would put matt jones ahead of austin as well...
but if he came here, i wouldn’t let him compete for the spot, id make him back up roy for ayear and keep himself clean… then if he proves he can do that, and learn under our wr’s coaches, he could be very valuable to us next year, especially if austin lives up to potential and roy returns to good form
by CowboysFan4Life on Jun 11, 2009 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Issues?
I don’t want Jones because he’s a dumbass.. but I don’t think it’s due to lack of talent.
I love Austin’s potential but I don’t think that anyone would be crazy to put him infront of Jones.
it was weird, I... I mean you probably didn't hear about it because I went under the name of Mike Honcho. But I just wanted you to know that. If you can hear me, if it got into your brain somehow. That I spread my buttcheeks as Mike Honcho.

What issues?
Looking at production over the past couple of years you’d rank Austin ahead of Jones? I couldn’t justify that looking at the numbers.
Now Austin may develop into a better receiver in the long run but he hasn’t “made his bones” yet. As I said, I really hope he does because I like this kid.
The bottom line to my post was not wishing Matt Jones was here but hoping we bring in another veteran receiver because we seem to be a little injury prone behind RW and Crayton.
Garrett needs to get a clue!

he would be great for depth purposes...
and has more potential than miles austin if he serves a year or two backing up roy williams…
its a win win… we take him cheap, let him learn behind roy williams and our wr’s coaches (that have developed a qb to wr in crayton, and have developed austin quite nicely) we don’t have to depend on him unless roy or miles goes down…

Willing to bet it ends up being Matt Jones if we go after another. You know Jerry can’t resist.

Do we actually expect a reality show contestant to make the 53 man roster?
I’m not being sarcastic at all, but I certainly don’t. I was under the impression seeing Manny Johnson and Ogletree(sp?) lined up in the starting offense scared some sense into the organization, as far as our receiving corps goes. I could be very wrong. This is Jerry Jones we’re talking about.

I just don't really want to see Matt Jones brought in here.
If we’re set to move Austin, Hurd, and Stanback up in the ranks then they need to play. Bringing Jones in could limit their development and he is no lock to maintain a knucklehead-free career. I’d think they’d be bringing in just another developmental guy to replace Travis Wilson instead of a veteran or semi-veteran WR.
Maybe I simply haven’t watched some football in a while, but I just finished Irvin’s last show and that Hawkins kid can cut on a dime and has enough moves to shake & bake those corners. Gets great separation too. I know the competition level is sub-pro, but he’s only 22.

I love me some Austin
and Hurd’s solid, and even Stanback sounds exciting on paper, but all of those guys have at least a bit of an injury history. It’s OTAs, and I’m sure they’d be fine to play if this were the regular season, but it is scary when Roy was hurt last year, Austin missed games, Hurd spent the entire season on IR, and Stanback was hurt for the majority of the season. If you think about it from that perspective, another solid, somewhat proven WR would allow a lot of people to sleep a little easier.
I’m not saying bring Matt Jones in and pencil him in as the #2 or #3 receiver. I think it’s clear that’s a battle between Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin, as it should be. Austin has earned the right to compete for that spot, no matter who they bring in. I’m just saying bring in a guy like Matt Jones to back up Roy or whoever. That way if we DO lose a WR, we’re not hurting, and aren’t putting some unproven rookie or reality TV star into the starting line up. He’d basically be an insurance policy, in case somebody goes down.
At this point, it’s a lot easier to rely on a veteran, even if he is rough around the edges, than say a 7th round draft pick, a contestant of a TV show(not trying to say whoever wins isn’t one hell of an athlete, but still…), or an undrafted free agent…even if said vet only had one good year at receiver, served a suspension, and could potentially be hooked on cocaine… ;)

Don't want to stir a hornet's nest
but if this is the year Dallas is desperate for a veteran WR, there are plenty of them out there. Matt Jones, Plax, maybe even Marvin, Reggie Williams, and Toomer. These names are just-in-cases, but it shows what’s already out there besides the guys who get cut in the preseason.

That is true, and you bring up a valid point, or at least made me ponder one...
…if Jerry is concerned with having someone come in and step on Austin and/or Hurd’s toes, he could opt to go the old ’un route. A guy like Harrison or Toomer. Plax, on the other hand, would come in to clearly be a #1 or #2.
But I still think Matt Jones is our guy, honestly. Guy’s got a great deal of upside. He’s young, has the measurables, and could contribute immediately as a gunman for the “Razorback”. That is of course, assuming he can somehow overcome a crippling addiction to cocaine…

3 injuries?
Eatman’s column (reps vs. rest – 6/10) says both Hurd and Austin need surgery — and they’ll be out longer than Stanback! Is that correct?
Personally, I’m VERY nervous about our receivers’ health. If I remember correctly, Austin hasn’t had an entire season with the Cowboys without missing some games (maybe he didn’t get hurt his rookie season because he didn’t play?) And we know what happened to both Austin and Hurd last season. And Stanback? Let’s please forget about him. The guy isn’t even healthy enough to learn to play receiver, much less so contribute on game day.
Between Williams, Crayton and the three patients, I think we’ll have 3.5 able bodied players on any given Sunday. That’s not enough.
Personally, i do hope we pick-up a receiver that’s really worthy of being on the 53 man squad. Someone willing to sign a $1.5-2.5m one year contract. Whomever this receiver is, he doesn’t have to be a starter NOR does he have to contribute on special teams (our special teams will be stacked this year.) Nope – he just has to keep his trap shut and play ball on Sunday when asked to do so.
I’m fine with that player being the 6th receiver or, if we don’t have a spot for him as the 6th – cut Stanback and make him the 5th.
And much to disapproval of many posters before me, I’m ok with that new receiver being Matt Jones. I recognize its a risk, but i can live with Jerry’s decision (if he goes after Matt).

Reading quickly I understood the sentence incorrectly in the article incorrectly. That said, I continue my skepticism about Hurd, Austin, Stanback’s ability to remain healthy and step-up into the prime-time.
