I was reading an NFC north blog about cutler vs. rodgers and found out that Romo was the top rated QB in the 4th quarter (you know, the one that clutch quarterbacks thrive in). Why do people always doubt him?

that's the millions dollar question

I’ve been asking that myself for a while. He rarely throws INTs in the 4th, the Pittsburgh 6 pick was an aberration.

In Romo we Trust

Romo

Unfortunately, the old saying that the QB gets too much blame & too much credit is just too true. Personally, I don’t look at it that way but a BUNCH of people in the media & a BUNCH of people on this blog do. We read writing after writing saying that “Romo can’t win in December” “Romo can’t win a play-off game” Etc. Well, the truth of the matter is that every single game played in December has about 45 people per team playing. It is accurate to write that the Dallas Cowboys have not played well in December, as a team, in the past several years but in my opinion it has not been Romo’s fault. During the Parcells era it was the defense that went south in December, regardless of who was playing quarterback.

One can argue that it was Romo’s bobbled hold that cost the team a play-off win in Seattle. Of course it can be argued that it was Romo the holder, not Romo the quarterback who bobbled the hold. But the way I remember that game, it was the defense & the conservative game management that had more to do with the loss. The Cowboys should have never been in the situation they were in when the hold was bobbled.

I know when everyone thinks about the dreadful play-off loss to the Giants, they think about the play of Patrick Crayton. Actually missing two passes that hit him in the hands (one of those being real crucial) and having a huge pass-route-brain-fart that most certainly would have been a touchdown. But wasn’t it the Cowboy’s UNspecial teams and the defense that let the Giants back in the game right before half and wasn’t it the defense that came out the second half & got manhandled?

In Terry’s million dollar question reply he wrote that the Pittsburgh 6 was an aberration, and we all know how big of Romo fan Terry is, but wasn’t it the best tight end in football who stumbled causing him to not be at the ball when the timing pass was thrown? Not only did Jason admit to that after the game, it was crystal clear on the replays.

This past December it was a combination of some poor defensive plays (see the Raven’s game), and a porous offensive line, that should be blamed for the Cowboy’s record. Although I will say that the butt kicking in Philly was a total team effort, including Romo and the coaching staff.

I think the world of the Dallas Cowboys and always will. I don’t want to be a Romo apologist, but to put the total blame for late season play on the quarterback is just simply not seeing reality. Whatever the team’s record ends up being in December ’09, it will be because of how 45 people play, mixed in with a little coaching. The record will show how well or how poor the Dallas Cowboys play, not necessarily how well or how poor Tony Romo plays. Of course the quarterback is the most influential player on the field, but without good play from those other 44, the quarterback can not Win football games.

I will agree that any NFL team with poor quarterback play very likely will not make the playoffs but a run of the mill BUS DRIVER (see Trent Dilfer) can take an excellent team to the superbowl. The recent Decembers record for the Dallas Cowboys has been the team’s record, not just Tony Romo’s record. If you don’t believe that, just ask Danny White.

Giants fan here

but sharing a baseball perspective. I’m a Mets fan, and the media is all over David Wright and Carlos Beltran for being chokers, despite every stat showing that they’ve both been excellent in close & late situations and in September each of the past 2 seasons, even as the team collapsed around them. Unfortunately, “Joe the fan” and the mainstream media has run with the “Wright and Beltran” are chokers, despite all the evidence to the contrary (and despite the fact that they’re probably 2 of the 10 best players in baseball). I think, in a lot of ways, the reaction to Romo is very similar. I’m on record as actually liking Romo – I wish he didn’t play for Dallas, but I enjoy watching him play – and think that, unfortunately, until he wins some playoff games he’s going to be regarded as a choker. Unfortunately for me and the Giants, I have little doubt that he’ll eventually break through in the postseason.

Same here

I think until Romo wins some playoff games he will be called a choker just like Peyton prior to his playoff & eventual Super Bowl win. And as have I said over and over again, it is the ENTIRE team that chokes in DEC and the playoffs. It is the QB, the WRs, the DEF, the ST, the OL, and on and on and on…..

EVERYONE needs to play better then they will get the credit they deserve and not before then!
