The VRR: Wade Phillips Takes Over the Defense
BTB's own quincyyyyy asks the question Is Wade really a new man?, and gives us Bradie James' answer via the DMN blog.
"This is the most I've ever talked to Wade Phillips," [Bradie James] said. "For whatever reason, he sits in our meeting room and this is his defense. I've learned so much in the last couple of weeks, just dealing with him during minicamps and OTAs.
"I think I've gained a whole new appreciation for him and the scheme, because there's no middleman now. When you had a defensive coordinator, you had Brian Stewart, so you had to go through him and you don't know how Wade is feeling. You've just got to take him for his word. Now you don't have that. You go straight to the horse's mouth, and he makes the change right here on the field and it stays that way. There's no uncertainty."

Just to close out the DeMarcus Ware/Greg Ellis kerfuffle, JFE asked Ware directly about Ellis' wild claims.
"I didn’t do that," Ware said.

Drew Pearson on not being in the Ring of Honor:
"There's nothing you can do about it," Pearson said on ESPN 103.3. "My records speak to itself. I can't add to those numbers. I can't go out there and catch any more passes. It's there. If it's good enough, then I'll be up there. If it's not, then I won't, and apparently at this point, it's not."
Drew Pearson on his relationship with Jerry Jones:
"[Jerry] speaks to me," Pearson said, "but you know, with all due respect, he calls me Preston more than he calls me Drew."
Ha!

Former Packers head coach and current Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman on Stephen McGee
But he does see certain traits and mannerisms "athletically and movement-wise" in McGee that remind [Sherman] just a little of Steve Young, who won a Super Bowl with pinpoint throwing accuracy but also kept defenses honest with his scrambling ability.

Quick Hits:
More on the practice facility collpase.
Star of stage and screen and former Cowboy Tony Curtis looking for his chance in Kansas City.
Couple of Cowboys go camping; Stephen Hodge and Jason Hatcher helping out at a football camp.

That a way, Demarcus
Thanks for putting that to bed. Greg Ellis’ penchant for whining in front of a reporter has become ludicrous. Greg, has anything EVER been your fault? Just STFU and play.

Who would have thought that among Pacman Jones, Terrell Owens, and Tank Johnson, Greg Ellis would go down as the least classy exit this offseason?

Did anyone see Roy Willaim's interview posted on the DMN Blog...
Says he is not going to address the media at all…I wonder if this is going to be counter -productive

How could it
be counterproductive? Talking to reporters has zip to do with catching passes.

I dont get Drew Pearson not being in the ring of honor...
Something is not right there. For whatever reason, Jerry is not a fan of Drew and from the looks of it Drew is going to have to wait until his son is in control to have a chance…

Sad sad sad
Jerry is missing a PR coup by not putting Drew in this year-say during the Thanksgiving game?
maybe Drew said some things back when JJ took over, about the way it all went down w/ Landry, etc. Even so, that was 20 years ago and the man needs to be put in!

Drew peddles T-shirts
with Cowboys logos and, for some reason, Jerry got all crosswise about it.
Stupid, Jerry, very stupid. Drew Pearson is one o the pillars of the Dallas Cowboys. He belongs in the ROH.

HODGE AND HATCHER DON'T CARE ABOUT FOOTBALL
they should be doing extra squats or something!!!!!!!!!!!
On a serious note, does anyone know how these camps work? Are they done as a charity type thing or are players supplementing income this way?

They are usually free events for the kids who participate.
Jason Hatcher asked Hodge, or should I say, Hodge jumped at the chance to help out with the camp when Hatch was talking about it in the locker room.
I’ve never read anything that says the players get paid for doing the camps. They usually do them as a favor to a city or region in which they group up.

camps for money?
To go to jay novaceks camp 16 years ago it costed 500 dollars, someone gets that money. I think all depends on circumstance. I went when I was 10, and received camp brochures from tons of places after that for tons of different player camps.

Yeah, when I was a kid I remember all the camps cost money.
Now, it seems they all do them for free. I guess that depends on how many ‘star’ players are attending. But you would think the money goes to either the high school or the organization that throws the camp.

By the eway, that's a rather distubing quote from BJames.
Even w/ a DC, I think most people assumed Phillips had his hand on the D more than James indicates. It sounds like he’s saying WP was really hands-off, until the transition.
Why was he hired then? I would think JJ assumed he’d be more involved in the D than that too. That was his main qualification, after all, running the 3-4. If he was hand-off and letting Stewart really run things, no wonder there were problems.
by Realist Larry on Jul 11, 2009 4:23 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't think it's that unusual.
I think the head coach typically coaches the the other coaches, so to speak, while the coordinators and position coaches handle the day to day coaching of the players. If there’s a problem with the D, Wade would go to the DC or OC to figure out a solution, not bypass them and go to the players. Likewise, if the players had questions, they would go to their position coach or DC, not go straight to the head coach about the DC’s schemes. Now, however, Wade is the Head Coach and DC, and he is hands on with the players. I think it’s telling that the D seems so different to James now that Wade is running it, because that further shows that Stewart was struggling at the Xs and Os and connecting with the players.

I agree-normally
But in this case, where Wade was brought in specifically to ‘run’ the 3-4, and with Stewart having so little experience, I’d have thought differently.
I guess Phillips thought he could handle it. Just like he thought Brad J could be a backup QB.

I think he was hired to make the defense better
usually coaches can do that through their coordinators, but apparently Stewart wasn’t quite ready to take the reins.

It is disturbing...
I recall wade saying in his introduction presser that he was going to run the defense; that one of his mistakes in Denver was not being more involved with the defense; and that he didn’t want to make the same mistake again. What happened? Somewhere along the way, Wade must have begun to think he was hired for his Head Coaching skills…

Somehow I have a feelling
that if Jerry Jones had his druthers, Terrell Owens would make the Ring of Honor ahead of Drew Pearson. I’m not kidding.
Sad. Pearson deserves as much as any player to be in the ROH. It doesn’t make sense! I agree with a previous poster who guessed that Pearson must have said something that offended Jones 20 years ago.

A Question for those who say "Good Riddance" to Ellis
Were you happy to see Emmit (who had admittedly lost a step) go, and excited about Troy Hambrick? Did you gloat over the classlessness of Emmit’s “Diamond among the trash” remark? Were you glad to see Larry Allen go (with 1 1/2 more probowl years left)?
Then why are you so happy to see a top 10 pass rusher leave? Why are you so convinced that an unproven guy who had every opportunity to play the last 2 years will be such an improvement? Because the coaches are high on him? I think they were pretty high on Hambrick as well.
by JimmyJohnson on Jul 12, 2009 4:15 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Parcells cutting emmit is not the same as ellis
Ellis has been banging this drum for a while, Spencer took away snaps from Ellis during last season, so this is not ne ground for the kid. I think Wade knows how to find defensive talent; remember that Troy Hambrick went in as a rookie free agent, Spencer is a 1st round pick more to the point a player with 1-2 round draft value. The comparrison is not an apples to apples scenario. Emmitt was within his rights to make his comments, he was one of the three main faces of the franchise and never complained like ellis did to the msm. But dallas was in salary cap hell, and the team did not have any real talent; that means that there was some truth to Emmitt’s statement.
The core arguement over the concern of veteran players leaving and having rookies or younger players come in to replace them. The cowboys organization has not had a clear history of practicing a policy that other teams like the pats do; replace the player before they lose any value with talent developed players instead of FA aquisitions. Dallas does not have the credibility for fans or msm to give them theb benefit of the doubt that they know what they are doing.
Look at the trade for AH to get Kitna, a deal that was an even trade for an aging CB who could no longer play any press coverage. Burnett was going to leave because he was never going to get a starting role with the team. Ellis was an aging vet making too much to be a situational pass rusher who did not play special teams; I think that paying him 4-5 million because you do not have a capable back-up that could fill-in for 2-4 games is what lead to his release. Dallas was trying to trade him before and during the draft, it wasn’t until after the draft that news came out that he was on the trading block; no dance partners were found due to his contract. One last point on the vet vs. new player outlook, every fan including myself questioned the move to draft another kicker, it wasn’t until about 1-2 weeks after the draft that it was public that Folk was going to need surgery, with that in mind it made sense to get a good kicker who was athletic who could fill in if Folk had a setback in his recovery.
I just feel that dallas is trying to move in a different direction and that what we have seen this offseason is to avoid holding on to players when they have untapped talent that they could turn to.

Smith and Allen
had to do more with money than anything.
And Parcells wasn’t high on Hambrick AT ALL. I remember him making a comment when asked about Hambrick of him being fat.

I’m glad to see that defensive guys are happy that Phillips is taking over the D. That’s really telling. If the guys are excited than you know something’s going well.
