Memo to Martellus Bennett's Agent:

You are paid to keep a lid on this sort of thing.

Star-divide

When I taught video production years ago, I used to explain to my students that their works were like Frankenstein monsters;  once they were aired, they took on lives of their own.  If they offended or embarrassed, you could not stand beside them and explain them.  You could not step in and correct anybody who did not get what you may have intended to say.  If you didn't plan carefully before you pushed the "publish"  or "play" buttons, any subsequent "misinterpretations" were your fault.

Martellus clearly does not understand this.  And if he doesn't soon, he will never get a fair endorsement deal, even if he becomes Antonio Gates II.

Call me.  I can help you.  I'm serious.

Hmm...

I understand and agree with YOUR point, Raf, but the writer of the article you linked is clearly crazy.

Should Martellus have been more cautious? Yep. But had he been a comedian or something, this wouldn’t be a huge deal at all. It seems fairly obvious that he was being tongue-in-cheek, and not taking himself seriously whatsoever.

by StillHateTheGiants on Jul 14, 2009 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

The whole idea that there's some subliminal "self hatred" Marty B has perpetrated

I’m pretty sure it was tongue-in-cheek, almost mocking racial stereotypes. Turns out, I was right, after hearing MartyB state his case.

The author was making something out of nothing. The whole thing WASN’T all that bad. Was it funny? Not particularly. Can it be a touchy subject? Yes, but only when made in all seriousness with hateful and racist intentions. This was done by a millionaire kid even younger than I am with a great deal of free time and a camera.

Comedians of all colors do this stuff all the time, with no consequences or high strung authors taking their words and actions too seriously. MartyB is no comedian, but apparently is held to a higher standard because he’s an athlete who plays professional sports. Yeah, it’s not his job to crack jokes and maybe make a point in the process, but it’s not bloody murder if he does…

I think people have totally missed the point of what Whitlock was saying

The whole topic is radio active and probably not something for a football site.

I personally enjoy it when we can laugh at and with each other about ourselves. That’s not how society is though.

That's one long article...

…on the Kansas City Star.

I don’t find this type of comedy offensive. And I do think its just that — comedy.

I would be frustrated with something like this if the author/creator were using stereotypes to truly degrade people who are different than he. But this is not what’s going on in Marty’s case.

Personally, I’m more concerned with censorship. And I do think the NFL has to be cautious about how it intends to control athletes’ personal sites, blogs, etc. To me, going too far towards censorship is no better than the supposed affronts in the speech/comedy/etc..

by Eagles suck on Jul 13, 2009 12:08 AM CDT reply actions

btw., I do think this type of self-promotion by MartyB creates a tough situation for the Cowboys

Organizations like the Cowboys want to control all press relations with anything Cowboys related. This type of event will create unpleasant articles, commentaries, questions, etc. And at some point someone in the organization (probably JJ) will be asked to react to it. When some up-start press person asks JJ if finds it funny or offensive, JJ will already have lost. This would not be a moment where “any press is good press” would apply.

by Eagles suck on Jul 13, 2009 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

right, I have not seen any evidence of censorship so far.

I’ve seen Chad 85 banned from Twittering during games, but so what. He’s working when he’s on the field. Your employer can fire you for Twittering on the company computer if it wants to. 85 should not be fraternizing during his work. And it’s stupid. You have a bad game and Twitter during it and the fans will want your head on a pike.

by Rafael Vela on Jul 13, 2009 12:25 AM CDT up reply actions

It might be censorship

in a certain sense, but Bennett is doing all of this as a Dallas Cowboy, relying soley on the celebrity of his status as a member of the team. He’s accountable not only to himself, but the team he represents. A lot of employees have been fired for a lot less across all forms of employment. ESPN showed Michael Irvin the door in part because of his comments that Romo played basketball “like a black man” or words to that effect. I saw no harm in the comment, but that didn’t matter.

Whether the team or the NFL cautions him, Raf is right – his agent needs to reel the young man in before damages his own marketability. This reminds me of Romo in Cabo… there was absolutely nothing wrong with him going away during that time. Everyone does that. Where Romo erred was not thinking about how it might look from the outside because of the media’s level of interest in him. Bennett isn’t Tony Romo, but there are a lot of opportunities he is foregoing for the sake of “a little fun”.

Yeah Raf he already has Whitlock after him, wait until Sharpton or someone else

with more visibility gets a hold of this and it becomes an issue for him. I do agree that he is only hurting himself right now; but do you think it poses a problem for the team if he struggles or shows signs of taking a step back? I think that it can, and will, but is this not a sign of the new generation, a generationt that is fully immersed in how much easy access any person has to get themselves on the spotlight, how large or small. I think that he means well but someone needs to talk to him and try to get him to try and keep what he posts to some level of structure or a guideline he can follow.

Jeez, the guy is just having some fun. Yes, marty b, if you are listening, just dont turn into the next mouthy guy we have to get rid of. But saying he accomplished next to nothing in the NFL with the rookie season he had last year behind the best TE in football is NOT next to nothing.

Jason Whitlock

Can’t defend the kid but Whitlock lives for these moments.

It’s his entire existence.

Jason is like the NAACP.

The biggest problem facing black people in our communities is black on black violence.

Yet you never see the NAACP on TV after a black man kills another black man.

But soon as race is involved. The Ambulance chasers are on the scene.

IF Bennett was talking about black women in a derogatory manner Whitlock would have never got involved.

Whitlock is a clown.

Anytime black people try to have any type of fun, here comes Whitlock to stamp it out.

If he still doesn’t understand that the N-word is used as a term of endearment between black people then it is his problem. As far as the other things, the “Black Olympics” and what not, why aren’t we allowed to make fun of ourselves?

Jason Whitlock does not and will never speak for me.

Agreed, Whitlock is a clown. Odd that when Dave Chappelle does it he gets a huge contract with Comedy Central, but if Martellus Bennett does it, WHOA, that’s offensive. Please.

by deadrody69 on Jul 13, 2009 7:25 AM CDT reply actions

I find it unfortunate whenever race becomes an issue when it shouldn't be...

I saw this video before Jason Whitlock started to raise hell, and I never even considered it to be offensive on the level he makes it out to be. Personally I thought it was funny, but I’m also a sucker for self-deprecating humor. I also enjoy the comedy of Dave Chappelle, Eddie Murphy, Kat Williams, Chris Rock, etc. But there are many who find them offensive.

I don’t think that Bennett set out to offend anyone, or make a statement…or what. He’s just trying to be funny. While I may not necessarily agree that this is exactly how I want him spending his time, I can’t complain that this is what he does for fun compared to what a good number of other high profile athletes are up to in their time off.

That being said, I do think that Bennett needs to tone it down a bit, especially if this is going to get the negative attention it is already. While Whitlock is WAY off base with his article, the fact is that this is going to get the attention it doesn’t deserve and put the kind of spotlight on the Cowboys that the team doesn’t need right now. While it all started in innocent fun, he needs to realize the ramifications of putting something like this on YouTube.

However...

I still wish it wasn’t that big a deal, and Bennett could do as he wishes. It was clean, no cursing or offensive language. It’s the offseason and it’s the dead period before training camp. He’s just having fun and it’s unfortunate that this is the kind of reaction that comes about because of it.

I agree completely

He doesn’t deserve to be raked over the coals, but think about what Romo hears for taking a vacation or having a famous girlfriend. It’s not-stop criticism. And as Troy said about Romo, no, it may not be fair, but it’s reality – you hurt your perception, and your image is what people talk about. Bennett should maybe thinking about guarding his public image a little better. Somewhere down the road whether it’s marketing or free agency, someone will be making decisions based partly on that. Think Ocho Cinco. Why handicap yourself?

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.

by dunkman on Jul 13, 2009 8:41 AM CDT up reply actions

No, it was a vacation

that’s it. Guys went all kinds of places on vacation during their bye weeks. You and I don’t know where because no one told us, but they weren’t hanging around in an empty locker room reading the playbook one more time. Brady went to NYC with his hot super model Baby Mama before his playoff game.

If Dallas had won, the rest of the planet would have never thought a moment about it. But since the team lost, it somehow became the reason. Or an indicator of “something deeper”. And that’s how flawed cause and effect arguments are born. “I get up every morning and the sun comes up. Thank God I get up or the world would be forever dark”.

It’s unrelated. Of course it turned out to be a public relations problem, but what does that mean except that it gave fodder to those who wanted to criticize? There’s enough real stuff to criticize players for beside where they vacation and who they date. That’s as irrelevant as boxers or briefs. IMO.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.

Samual L Jackson

Samual L. put it best in the movie “coach carter” when one of his players called him a “n***a”. he responded

“Nigga is a derogatory term used to insult your ancestors. If a white man uses it your ready to fight him. If you use it you teach him to use it, too. Your saying you dont mind. Well I mind! So knock it off!”

Look fellas I’m not looking to start a racial uproar, but i agree with Whitlock’s article…. In our very own constitution it states “ALL men are created EQUAL” meaning, if you have the right to say such garbage I should be able to as well.. regaurdless of skin tone.

I have been taught from a very young age that if you want someone to respect you, you must show them respect… To lead by example.. and if i didnt want someone to use a certain word, you definatly wouldnt see me calling myself, friends, family, whomever that very same word im preaching against..

What alot of people dont understand is there a very few people with pure hate in them that just treat everyone nasty… with most people, YOU teach THEM how they treat you… you show them what is allowed, what is tollerated, and what you will not accept… With this being said i highly doubt it will have changed the mind of some ignorant readers who will choose to continue using the word.. But i do respect a man of Whitlock’s position standing up for others ignorance.

Not sure if it really will hurt his marketability

If the guy fails to get it done on the field, that will hurt his advertising career. Similar outrageous statements by Charles Barkley have never hurt him. If anything, they helped him. Barkley has the best position of anybody in this country: He can say absolutely anything, no matter how outrageous, and people just laugh and say, “That’s just Charles.”

Granted, Sir Charles is hoops Hall of Famer, which grants him a pass, however unfair that may be, and Marty B is not close to any Hall at this point. Martellus seems like a fun guy, and he has an infectious personality, and I can see advertisers wanting him because of that. Is the Wall Street Journal going to want him as an endorser? Probably not. But I could see him doing an Ipod commercial, or maybe Nike will revive the “Fun Team” commercials they did with Kevin Garnett and Gary Payton back in the day. He, along with Chris Cooley, Clinton Portis, and Chad Johnson, would be perfect for those.

how the lack of marketability affects a secondary, role player? Those players don’t get endorsement deals any way.

And you should talk about childish responses…pot meet kettle.

Never say never

If Witten got injured and Bennett filled in exceptionally well, things could definitely get interesting.

I disagree

Witten is a future HOFer and the best TE in the biz, Bennett is a talented kid with still a lot to learn.

I am only painting a scenario

wherein Bennett ascends to superstar status as a Cowboy.

If Witten were a little older

I could maybe see that scenario possibly happening but with Witten being 26 and entering the prime of his career, I can’t see the Cowboys retaining Bennett over Witten when either contract comes up for renewal.

Never say never.......

A month ago, you were saying that they Cowboys would never get rid of Ellis and look what happened. All I’m saying is, this is football. You never know what lies ahead. I couldn’t believe when Jerry waived Aikman and E. Smith. Never thought it would happen but it did. Before you say anything, I know that they were at the end of their careers, but this is a business. Hey, I hope that Witten stays forever but who is to say that will happen?

by texstar on Jul 14, 2009 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I never said that

I said I’d be surprised if they did because of the lack of depth at the position, but I never said they would never get rid of him.

Again, putting untrue words in my mouth.

by Terry on Jul 15, 2009 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Then what is your point?

You continually say that Romo will never be replaced, Witten will never be replaced and so forth. I personally hope that you are correct but you always “appear” like you know these guys personally and that there is no way that they will ever be cut. My only point to you is don’t make all these guarantees about players when you don’t know any more than any of the rest of us unless you are Jerry Jones in disguise.

by texstar on Jul 15, 2009 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't have a point, just stating my opinion

like everyone else does here. If I state my opinion as a fact, that’s just my style, you should be used to it by now.

What if Witten lost both legs in an accident?

being 26 wouldn’t help him much.

I guess my real point is that the Cowboys may have trouble keeping B-dawg if Witten stays healthy because he seems like he’ll be a stud in this league.

and I agree with that

I just can’t see them signing Bennett over Witten.

This is offensive to people? Really? Perhaps it’s not the rain, but the thing rained on that’s the problem. Let me dial up a Wahmbulance!

Maybe some are

I think Raf’s point is not calling it offensive, just not smart. And it’s not smart if yiou recognize how much in the public eye you are and what this can do to your reputation down that line. Tell me that Chad Johnson has enhanced his value as a player and endorser through his antics.

I like Tellus and I don’t care about the video. I would just like to see him help himself rather than hurt himself.

I have no doubt that this is offensive to some

And it’s the ones that are offended that should do some inner searching, not outward blaming. Sure it probably wasn’t smart, but people get offended for just about anything, it’s a numbers game really. How many will this one offend? We live in a world of children masquerading as adults.

Joe Simpson is the creepiest man in America, and while Jessica certainly has some tangible assets that would be fun to play with, any woman over the age of 11 who plans a “Barbie and Ken” themed birthday party is just too dumb for words

The columnist has it so wrong

It’s stuff like this, using humor to demysticize the racial stereotypes, to turn them around and into a joke that helps end prejudice. You have to laugh at them. By not being afraid to mock the stereotypes, Bennett shows that they have no power over him.

It’s idiots like Whitlock and Sharpton who blow a fuse over this stuff (or PRETEND to,
to further some other end) that keeps the problem going.

Richard Pryor was 40 years ahead of this guy.

I also thought Whitlock’s example of what would happen if Witten made a video like this was totally illogical.
Bennett is black, poking fun at black stereotypes. Shouldn’t an equivalent example be Witten making fun of white stereotypes?

I read the article, but haven't watched the video.

Personally, I thought Whitlock’s article was just some well-written commentary—nothing too over the top. I did have a problem with this part, he he:

He’s accomplished next to nothing in his brief NFL career.

If others write on Marty B’s dinosaur tales or self-proclamations that he’s Aquaman, then for sure they will write about this. Just makes me wonder what the team’s players think about the vids.

Bennett is an idiot

and is one of those guys that, unfortunately, needs to get taken out behind the shed and taught a lesson. I got a call into Nate Newton. I’d pay big bucks to see Nate take him apart piece by piece…maybe then he would grow up. My Aggies warned me that this guy had talent but was a friggin’ clown.

BTW

How about we not use Nate Newton, it probably would be pretty hypocritical for a guy who went to jail for moving crap loads of pot, to talk to a guy about maturity.

You may be right

Nate thought the White House was responsible. He has an interesting moral compass.

“We’ve got a little place over here where we’re running some whores in and out, trying to be responsible, and we’re criticized for that, too.”

Also while I'm on it...

Even though Nate is a big boy, I’m not so sure he’s in that great of shape and it’s not like Martellus is some small dude.

Truth

“How you portray and refer to yourself will determine how you’re viewed by outsiders”

I think many of you missed the purpose of the article…Marty B is doing his “brothers” a great “dis”-service…it his actions and clowning around that perpetuate the stereo-types about African Americans…something many white people take seriously…but why take anything seriously?
