Playing Philly Twice...
Playing Philadelphia the second time every year makes my stomach churn. Maybe it's living so close to the city, and maybe it's because all my co-workers quote Howard Eskin the way bible-bangers quote Pat Robertson. Either way, I wanted to take a look at the job Jim Johnson's unit does against us the second time around.
It always seems to be that no matter how fantastic our first game is (2008) or what kind of streak we're on (2007), they manage to stall our offense.
1st Down Total Yd Turnovers Point Diff
1999 +3 +37 -2 -3
2000 +6 +126 0 -1
2001 0 -29 -1 -15
2002 -9 -158 -1 -10
2003 -2 -67 +1 -13
2004 0 -80 -1 -14
2005 -15 -112 0 -12
2006 -7 -119 -2 -17
2007 -13 -194 +2 -24
2008 -5 -82 +3 -35
I know one of Garrett's big question marks is the ability to change things up - let's hope he manages to get us past Philly the first AND second time this year. Certainly would have made a difference last season.

I've always realized that
we kick their ass the first game but we lose the 2nd game. It seems as if they don’t try at all for game 1 + they bring their best come game 2. Also not helping us out is the fact that we usually play them in December, the time when we play horrible, they play good. But the Eagles are the most inconsistent team in the league.

we kick their ass the first game
No so sure about that. Philly has won the first game in 6 of the last 10 seasons vs. Dallas.

Actually as of recent
3 out of the last 4 seasons (in the first game), Dallas beat Philly. What I’m saying is Philly tends to do bad in the 1st game against Dallas to the point that Dallas usually wins but Philly does much better in the 2nd game. At the same time Dallas screws it all up especially in a game as simple as this…. win and your in [the playoffs].

our offense has ripped you guys in the first meeting year after yer

Well, They Did in 2007
Wouldn’t agree about the other three years. After you subtract out the points scored by our special teams and defense, and those given up by the offense, the offense was good, but hardly overwhelming:
2005 the offense scored 33, gave up a touchdown for a net of 26 points.
2006 the team scored 24, but the defense scored a touchdown. Net of 17 points.
2007 the offense did rip them up, and netted 38.
2008 the team scored 41, but one touchdown was on a kickoff return, and the Romo fumbled away a touchdown in his own end zone. This game gets held up very often about how great Garrett did against Jim Johnson, but the offensive net was only 27.
I don’t think 26, 17 and 27 points are good enough to say they ripped the other team.

In the National Football League, against a division rival, I would say that we ripped ’em pretty good based on those numbers.

I don't get your math
Ok, Felix had a KO return for a TD, but otherwise the Cowboys scored four offensive TDs (3 Romo passes and a Barber TD plunge) plus 2 FGs. So they scored 34 points against Jim Johnson’s defense, which by any measure is a tremendous accomplishment. If anything, there have been many recent games where Philadelphia has scored points off defensive TDs or very short field due to Cowboy turnovers (i.e., the 2008 MNF game).

Net Points
Subtract out the touchdowns given up by the offense. We agree the offense posted 34 points, but Romo’s fumble cost us seven points, so it was a net of 27.

Well if we didnt start that drive so close to our own endzone
it wouldnt have resulted in a TD. Thats not entirely on the offense

They Started at the Five
No offense should give up points with that starting field position. The worst that should happen is a punt from your own end zone.

Seriously?
2005 we destroyed them, that game was pretty much over at halftime.
2006 we did only score 24, but we also had that late pass interference that put them at their goal line to win. While we didn’t put points on the board, considering our offense was doing very poorly at that time, i think you have to say overall, considering we were up against the eagles D, we did VERY well. 24 points + chance to win after a HUGE offensive play with under a minute left = a good performance.
2007 we ripped them.
2008 we ripped them. Offensive net is a ridiculous way of looking at it. for 95% of the plays, we torched the eagles D. and likewise, that drive we started in our own end zone, the net result of points out of that starting position on average is probably negative, so its not exactly reasonable to just subtract 7.

It Sounds Like
You think any time our offense gives up points it shouldn’t matter. It absolutely matters, because it hurts on the scoreboard. And that’s the only thing that matters. If an offense scored 28, but gave up three defensive touchdowns that ultimately cost the team the game, would you say they “ripped” the opposing team? You can’t “rip” someone if you’re also hurting yourself.
You’re also concocting mythologies for the 2006 and 2008 games. The allegedly huge offensive play was actually a blown coverage by Michael Lewis that resulted in a long pass interference penalty. Penalties aren’t even plays, much less huge offensive plays. And in the end, the offense only score 17 points. By any sane definition, that not ripping anybody. You’ll have to prove to me we “ripped” the Eagles defense for 95% of the plays, or that the net result of starting at the five is “probably negative”. It’s just idle speculation on your part. The bottom line in 2008 was the offense put up 34 points, but handed seven back. The made a net contribution of 27. Anything else is just day dreaming.

(sigh)
…and this is how the the “you have no super bowl wins, oh yeah well you have no playoff wins in 13 years” argument begins.
In this case I would typically reply with something like “Don’t sell the Cowboys short. They’re consistent too. They’re one of only 6 teams (Chiefs, Browns, Bengals, Lions, Bills – some great company there) that haven’t won a a playoff game since 1996.” But I won’t go there, because it’s tired.

Well...
At least the Cowboys fans have memories of greatness that we can reminisce about. At least you guys got the Stanley Cup this year, right?
Oh my bad, that was the city in Pennsylvania that has talented teams…

Yeah, and Bernie Madoff has memories of being rich and successful. Congrats on having a great team a long time ago.

Table Confuses Me
What are the differentials measured against?
by kindablue on Jul 5, 2009 7:59 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Table...
Measures the difference btw our first game and second game against Philly each year.
by Iessthanmike on Jul 5, 2009 9:10 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Still Confused
We won the second game of 1999 20-10, and lost the first game by three points. The differential should be +13, but the table has -3. The point differential is also wrong in every other year I checked (2000, 2007 and 2008). We got blown out in the 2000 season opener by 27, but lost in overtime in the second matchup that year by three. That one should be +24. And so on down the line.

Just FYI...
Donovan McNabb is 11-6 as a starter against the Dallas Cowboys. His stats are:
541-301-3501-25-10 (83.1 rating)
66 rushes – 389 yards – 5 touchdowns
Pretty solid numbers (although slightly below his overall career rating). What I found interesting was that the Eagles won several games where McNabb was average or just flat-out sucked. Which to me proves that the Eagles have been a better team (esp. defensively) over the last decade.
I’ve posted many times on how the Eagles have been the true Cowboys nemesis for the last 40 years, not the Redskins or Giants. No matter how bad a team Philadelphia might have, they always seemed to either come up with a win or ruin the Cowboys offense statistically.
I hate playing them twice a year.

nemesis
well its because the redskins dont hang quite enough at least when it comes to faceoff.
the giants are beastly and we cant quite attack them after a super bowl win which I was glad to see spoiling the pats.
but mostly cuz we dont get many giants fans shovelling their unwanted opinions down our throats
and mostly cuz they REALLY do seem to spoil everything

That's a reasonable way to take it
and I bet any reasonable Cowboy fan feels the same way.
But it doesn’t mean that I don’t hate the Eagles or think lowly of their fans (no offense)

2008: Dallas 41-37 Philadelphia

don't forget 2005
which was Dallas 33-10 Philadelphia…arguably Bledsoe’s best game as Dallas QB.
But then there was Philadelphia 38-24 Dallas in 2006, arguably Bledsoe’s worst game as Dallas QB.

Look at Bledsoe trying to froce it in to Witten
I bet they drew up plays together and purposely ignored T.O.

Completely off topic, but that reminds me...
after having seen the absurd trailer for T.O.‘s new reality show, I’m EXTREMELY relieved he’s no longer with the Boys. Dodged a humiliating bullet there…still have to try to get 4th and Long off the air…

Philly has their moments
I still think they’re grossly overrated, much like our Boys last year. Nobody should actually be so confident in their team in July. For all we know, Westbrook could decline drastically in production, McNaab could start to suck like he did early last season, their “improved” O line could end up being a complete joke(sort of like our O line last year), their rookies could end up in IR after week 6 or so, Desean could regress, etc.
Happened to us last year…Bad things happen to good teams all the time. The NFC almost never goes as expected.

they've been inconsistent for years now
they’re as likely to go 8-8 as 12-4. and their two biggest offensive playmakers are old and very injury prone…
