A blind mans perspective on some players
First, I had to title this post as a view from a "blind man" because my opinions are based solely on what I have read; and as we all know you can believe none of what you read/hear and only half of what you see, and I have not been to San Antonio; and since what we hear/read comes from writers who are not professional scouts; and what he hear from coaches and owners are usually generic half truths my questions and opinion are based entirely on uneducated speculation; Also, I maybe a tad early since the 1st pre-season game is on Thursday and I could possibly get a look for myself if it is nationally televised; However, any thoughts about players gathered from this game would also be scude because of the limited camera shots and quality of the competion any given player is competing aginst. I posted this only because Roster spots are at a all time premium this year. Ok, enough for the disclaimer, except to say as always, if butchery of the English language truly offends you than I suggest you stick to reading publications written by those who get payed to do it.
Steven McGee: I know some of you dudes and dudetts minds are in a tizzy and your fingers are itching to hit the key board to tear this idea to shreds, but please just hear me out. First of all, I thought I read somewhere were the 3rd/emergency QB does not count against the roster, but then again I am probably mistaken and it was probably the game-day roster. If it's the former disregard this player; If its the later then I'm on the right track. Anyway, I know we all still have head-aches over the loss of Matt Moore to Carolina; however, I'm not sure that you can even put McGee in the same sentence with Moore based on what I have been reading, not saying he won't eventually develop into something. But as mentioned earlier The roster spots a few, and why waste one on this guy above someone who might accually contribute or have more potential to contribute at another position? Personally, I think he makes it through to the PS and if he doesn't, well then he doesn't ( I think Jerry is enamored with prospects from Texas). That being said, You rearly ever truly know what you had, till it's gone.
Mike Mickens: I put this guy slightly ahead of Mcgee in accual performance on the practice field and I am indecisive based on the press about his potential. First, he comes from a small school, thus the competion the has seen is limited. He, in my limited medical opinion, has not had suffient time to heal from his knee surgery ( everyone knows it takes at least a year to get back to 100%, despite being able to preform on it earlier), He gets burned every practice by multiple players from Williams to Jefferson. I do not know if this is because of his knee, his inexperience, or the fact that he just really isn't any good. Now, the recent injuries to Cbs may mandate us putting him on the 53, but I think if he has to be on the field we are up shits crick anyway. Again, I think he makes it through to the practice squad.
These are my biggest and probably most controversial player thoughts; However, I do think that holding onto the LB Stewart, just for the fact he can LS is just silly. I have not read were he has been impressive playing LB.
I don't know the extent of Micheal Hawkins's injury, but I hope he makes it back so we can get another look at him.
I'm a big Ohio State fan, but I'm really intrigued about Stephen Hodge.
Does anyone else, in vision Brandon Williams as MLB in the future, possibly at Brady's spot? Nothing against Brady, just looking for the physicality at the spot, and If he puts on more muscle I think he could do it.

I think the 3rd/Emergency QB just doesn't count against gameday roster
While I have also heard that McGee doesn’t look great so far, I see there being no chance of him making it through to the PS. Give the guy a year or two to develop and we may be able to use him as our #2 or possibly flip him for future draft picks.
As for Mickens, I agree he doesn’t seem to have fully recovered, though all the coaches say his knee is not a problem. I think he may be able to make it through waiver and end up on the PS, but I also just saw a post on the DMN blog that he was playing well today in camp. If that carries over into the preseason games, we may not be able to sneak him through to the PS, especially since he was considered a draft steal. Why not put him on the PUP and see if more conditioning and recovery can possibly do him some good.
As for Stewart, I think if he can perform adequately as a special teams contributor and be as good, or nearly as good, as some of the other backup LB’s, why not keep him around. If he develops into an adquate LS, then even better.

3 QB's
I thought this was a forgone conclusion. Dallas will carry 3 QB’s on the 53 man roster. The only way to develop a young QB now is to protect him (avoid exposing him to the waiver wire). I’m not saying he has shown diddly poo yet, but the mere fact that he was drafted at the top of round 4 pretty much mandates he makes the roster.
Training Camp '09 = Mega Thunder Dome....80 men enter, 53 men leave.
there is no way the Cowboys will cut McGee
absolutely no way they cut a qb they invested a high 4th rd pick on, he’s a project and they knew that when they drafted him.
In Romo we Trust
by your logic then we should ahve
let Romo go. because he sucked his first couple of years. then like an ugly worm he developed into a beautiful butterfly he is today (I guess with a couple of warts :-).
Moore will never amount to anything more than a back up QB in this league. he is like jason garrett. he is smart. can read defenses. make some plays. won’t lose you the game. but he doesn’t have the physical attributes to ever be a top notch starting QB in this league.
on the other hand, mcgee has the arm stregth, the physical attributes and has shown accuracy when he throws. the part for him is the mental aspect and speed of the game. so before you throw him out the door because he has a little problem in his FIRST ever training camp in the NFL, give him time to develop much like we did with Romo. his long term potential and ceiling is much higher than Moore will ever be, so that’s not a good comparison.
now, you maybe right on Mickens but for the wrong reasons. he came from a small school that was ranked in the top 20 and played in the big east (and won it). its not the size of the school but the competition. otherwise woudl connecticut basketball ever be considered one of the best, because they sure aren’t that big of a school. I think he is not fully healed as you suggest and may need another year to get his bounce back. he is just a bit too slow right now so he is reading analyzing and reacting, which in the NFL puts you two steps behind and that’s all the NFL players need (actually they only need one step). he is one that may make it to PS and not be picked up. but so far he has not been impressive. for a player that had second round grade.
No, By my logic Romo would have done as he did-deveop on the PS
I knew that arguement was coming. LOL the possible option given the shortage of roster spots.
and just like Moore
somebody would have picked him up. like denver who also placed a call to Romo but he came here because of one coach payton. didn’t moore get picked up by carolina?
I knew your response was coming too. its about how much you value a player and think of his potential. if you think he is nothing more than a back up at best, then risking PS is OK, you just lost a back up. but if you think he is starting material, then probably other teams have done the same type of scouting and they might pick him up.
Romo on PS….would have never been a cowboy.
