That Marty B

Play where he stiff armed the defender to the ground was sweet…

Felix just looks soooo smooth out there running, and he’s just flying while he does it

Stanback

by Joey2zs on Aug 13, 2009 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure it is...

but not all teams have the same mentality…some want to win…some have younger players (Russell) and need to open up the playbook more…some are testing schemes and therefore use them more.
I’ll bet that if you did the analysis the pre-season records have no bearing on the regular season and in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the bad teams have better winning percentages in the preseason…without the top talent on the 1st team their 2nd and 3rds are stronger.

First preseason game or not...

We have looked like crap from the starters on down. Our first team defense was shredded by Jamarcus Russell? You’ve got to be kidding me. We went three and out on the opening drive and nearly self destructed on our only score so far. I’d say we have a lot to worry about. We needed to set a tone from the first snap of the year and didn’t do it. Again…

by Mr. Patrick on Aug 13, 2009 11:05 PM CDT reply actions

not to discount the hold on Kosier

but other than that, the second drive from the starters with a thing of beauty. 6 players got touches, and didn’t even have a 3rd down. exactly what we want to see.

and the D gave up a questionable PI call and then made a nice goal line stand to hold them to a FG.

a lot to criticize overall but the first squads actually didn’t look as bad as you make out.

would you rather have him or brad johnson? no qb has ever, EVER, run for more yards and TDs. and he sucks somehow?

by Joey2zs on Aug 13, 2009 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

A big reason was the Atlanta receivers

they sucked, Roddy White matter of fact was actually one of them. There receivers might have been worse than the Eagle receivers

by Musiccitynorm on Aug 13, 2009 11:42 PM CDT reply actions

5 positives so far

- first team offense – after their initial slow start, the whole first team offense looked great on the second drive, 6 players got touches, no 3rd downs, should be a good glimpse of what we can expect to see a lot more of

- sam hurd, got picked wasn’t really his fault, got blocking penalty to bring back a run, but otherwise he stole the second quarter and passed Miles on the depth chart

- OScan, Sensi and Ball, not perfect but all making some good plays in coverage and hits

- Punting unit – McBriar still a little rough on some kicks but booming others, 47.2 average, very nice to have him back, and decent coverage overall

- Doug Free – about the only thing we heard about him was the false start, which is actually good, he has done a decent job of protecting the QB

So some good, a lot of bad for the backups

Romo and the first unit put together a beautiful drive for a TD, the o-line looked good, and a variety of offensive players touched the ball on that drive. Just what Wade and Jason wanted. The defense had some issues, but was passable.

Then, the backups came in. I told ya’ll that Brown and Mickens were getting lit up like X-mas trees at camp. Well, they carried that over to the game. Raf warned about the backup NT’s, and that came home to roost. Our backups on defense were horrible. Butler disappointed, none of the d-line did anything. I will give Alan Ball a little bit of props for some hard hits. Kitna had issues with the snap and the timing of the offense, Procter with a crappy snap in the redzone, McQ was…well, you guys know what I think of McQ. I liked the work of Lattimore, too bad the backfield is so crowded. McGee settled down towards the end and did some good things.

Well, I would have liked to see the 2nd and 3rd units show better, but at least the 1st units looked OK and we had no big injuries that I know of. First preseason game, you never know how they’ll play. The backups need to pick it up next week.

Positives for the evening...

First team offense looked good once they got a decent starting field position.

O-line looked solid, good holes for the RB’s, and Romo had time.

Buehler looks like a good kicker/ST player.

Hurd looks ready to grab the 3rd WR spot.

Mcbriar looks like he’ll be his old self, and punt coverage looks better.

Rat’s picking up right where he left off last year.

offense spread the ball around well.

Hope to see some improvement in the back ups next week though.

Well it was a loss, but hey.

One this is just an exhibition game, and 2. you bring up good points, a loss can be a good thing if there is something learned from it. We’ll get them on Thanksgiving, I know i’ll get my turkey leg.

+1

No one was injured, at least no one appeared to be .

Not the best

thing that could have happened, but they were picking on Mickens and Brown… Especially Mickens. If they needed a first down they would just throw to whomever he was covering. Saddening to see the back ups do so bad on the running game, but maybe there was a few bright spots amongst the glaring bad spots.

First team looked awesome. I didn’t see the very beginning of the game, but I am excited for this year. I like what I’m seeing from the offense. I see us having a good season regardless of how terrible the play was after a bit.

Quick impressions

Good enough-

Barber
Choice
Backup OT’s
Ogletree (on KR, he was really good)

Good-

Starting O-line
Romo
Witten
Roy
Starting defensive front 7
Buehler
Carp

Real Good-

Felix (wow)
Bennett
Scandrick
McBriar (minus the 1st punt)
Sam Hurd (he was torching the Raiders secondary)

Not so good (or down right bad)-

Procter (even for him, not good)
Alan Ball (couple nice hits, but he was picked on)
Courtney Brown (same as Ball without the hits)
The backup LB’s (Butler, J Williams need a lot of work, but they looked good on ST)
The backup NT’s
Willie Reid
Mickens (worst CB on the field, don’t worry about being able to sign him to the PS)

Misc.-

Lattimore should be on the PS for sure, he looked decent out there

Jason Williams is fast and can tackle well, should be a force if he learns his position.

Carp was by far the best non starting LB, would be nice if he can carry it over to the regular season.

vick

who gives rat’s ass about vick. he has been out of football for 2 yrs. and why do we have to gameplan for him at all? what position is he gping to play? some sort of running back i would have to guess. we’ve seen how hard it is for qbs to play receiver. he can’t throw so how hard will it be to face him. he’s over 30 now and will definitely need to shake rust off. look at pacman. took him while to get going. worried about vick? please.
