Rookie OLB Brandon Williams will miss the season with a torn ACL.
Williams was injured while trying to make a tackle on a punt return in Dallas' 30-10 victory over Tennessee on Friday night. Victor Butler will replace Williams as the primary backup on the strong side.
Steve Octavien also is likely to move up in the rotation.
Also, third-string quarterback Stephen McGee sprained a knee while throwing a late touchdown pass and may miss about a week. Inside linebacker Justin Rogers aggravated a knee problem and may miss a week as well.Hat tip to TennKen for the FanShot.

Sorry fellas...
Nobody (even a division rival) wants injuries. Was he one of your 4th rounders or was he the Cowboys’ first pick (in the 3rd round)? I think you guy drafted 2 Williams’?
Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(
Bad Break...
Our Line Backer depth concerns me…
That Hurts
And it thins us out at OLB. It also sets Brandon back some, because he needed the repetitions to start settling into a new position. Darn. I’m pretty high on Brandon. He was only 20 years old when we drafted him, and he’s got some serious upside.
Let’s hope Octavien keeps playing like he did last night. It would be great for him play himself on to the roster.
That sucks
injury bug was bound to hit sooner or later, never like to hear anyone tearing an ACL.
Sugar ... water .... and, of course, purple.
I too was pretty high on Brandon and Butler as being our backup OLBs. I thought they both showed a lot of upside and could do a good job down the road as starters. Hopefully Brandon can recover from this fully, and come back next year to contribute like I think he can.
As for the OLB position as of now, I think Butler still looks solid as a situational pass rusher behind Ware and Spencer. And if there is a silver-lining, it is that Steve Octavien has stepped up his play and probably can be a serviceable #4 OLB for us in the wake of this loss.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
Too bad
A set back for B Williams, but now they can stick him on IR and keep Octavien and Stewart if they decide to keep 10 LB’s.
Training Camp '09 = Mega Thunder Dome....80 men enter, 53 men leave.
Neither one has any star potential
At this point last summer we already knew Scandrick was a great player despite his draft position. If our draft picks haven’t made their presence felt by now (other than TC reports that they are doing “ok”), then we probably can’t expect much from them.
What had Romo done at this point in his career?
Bradie James? Jay Ratliff?
If you’re willing to give up on someone after their first camp or think you know someone’s a great player (everyone raved about Pat McQuistan early on and people were saying that he must have switched places with his brother, Paul-who was drafted a lot higher-4th round?).
After their first training camp, we do know a little more about a prospects future than we did on draft day, but come on…
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
before romo's rookie year?
he was playing at a pro bowl level? are you being facetious?
I wasnt expecting a lot from him or Jason Williams this season anyway,
It hurts our depth some, probably special teams more than anything.
That's a joke.
Because no player has ever developed after their first year. Give me a break dude.

not true
Michael irvin went on to have a great career after tearing his ACL his rookie year.
In Romo we Trust
Yeah
If the surgery is done well, and the rehab regimine is adhered to seriously, he should be fine. In 14 months from now, it will be like it never happened.
He’s a LB, too, so it’s even less of a worry. But that being said, point guards and DBs blow out their ACLs and come back later at full speed.
Sure, 15 years ago, a blown ACL means you lose agility and top end speed, but less so now.
Was Tim Hardaway ever the same?
What if he gets an infection? What if the graft doesn’t fuse?

what if
he got hit by an asteroid?
If Timmy Hardaway is the only example you can use, then your argument isn’t strong.
mcnabb?

Yeah McNabb is slower and it took him a while to return to form

Jamal Lewis.
Blew his knee out as a sophomore and it didn’t seem to finish him. Plus considering how much more powerfully built Lewis is than your average-sized back, you’d think it would slow him down more than your average nimbler back.
Impossible.

Not true
ACL tears are very common in athletes. With proper rehad and dedication, most return with 9-12 months none the worse for wear.
You lose a step... you are 99.9% assured of osteoarthritis
Cowboys fan since 1978.. I was 3 years old
not sure about the osteoarthritis
but there are plenty who have recovered fully without losing anything but 9-12 months.
if its a doctor
I hope williams doesn’t go to you.
Here you go
Due to the near-100% risk of osteoarthritis in the ACL-injured
population, with or without surgical reconstruction, prevention
is currently the only effective intervention for these
life-altering injuries. The greatly increased risk of knee
osteoarthritis suggests the need to develop more specific
injury prevention protocols targeted to high-risk mechanisms.
In addition, determining the timing of these interventions for
the greatest effectiveness is salient.
Cowboys fan since 1978.. I was 3 years old
I have to agree with Mullin....
I know a few people with these injuries and they are not the same, ever…
It takes up to a year after surgery
For the graft to heal…
Cowboys fan since 1978.. I was 3 years old
well,
no one is saying that.
But to my layperson’s eyes, from what I read, and my experience with my own ACL surgery, I can see how a 22 yr old can recover and not suffer any loss. Otherwise, athletes with blown knees would be thrown on the scrap heap. A full lost step means that dude is no faster than you or your friends.
Anecdotally, if every repaired ACL = a lost step, then every player in the NFL is about as fast as guys I know who are in shape.
Not arguing...
Just I think I know what I am talking about
Cowboys fan since 1978.. I was 3 years old
Its just experience versus mainly perception is all..
and I was just trying to lighten it up a little.
He is one of the rare exceptions..
But also, what was his speed and cutting like before his injury?
Cowboys fan since 1978.. I was 3 years old
that's what I'm talking about
all players are different, you don’t who will be the same or not. There are always exceptions to the rule.
Irvin obviously didn’t lose a step, he went on to have a hof career for crying out loud.

Now That You Mention It
Irvin did seem in my foggy memory to not be as quick. He became very strong, able to outmuscle corners and shed tackles, but he was lightning quick his rookie year.
You could well be right.
Don’t take any of this personally…football fans love to argue whether they know are talking about or not.

your right, nver the same 9-12 months is optamistic
at 9 to 12 monthss from what I have seen from players they can play, but it seems like it isn’t until the next year that they are anywhere close to 100%; thats why I think Mickins will be better next year.
wasnt that the case with Mcnabb and Palmer??
took nearly two years for them to come back completely. Both appear not to be as fast…
It takes up to a year UNLESS
your name is Willis McGahee!
That dud was sprinting like 3-4 months after the surgery… Medical miracle?
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
dude* not "dud"
I’m not bashing the guy who had an 80 yard run against us last year
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
Running straight ahead
And cutting and twisting are two totally different things

I am also a certified athletic trainer (13 years)
Mullin, I disagree with your prognosis. I think that most patients if they have successful surgery and rehab can come back just as fast as before the surgery. This is based on my experience (over 25 patients/athletes who had ACL reconstruction surgery). Now if the surgery does not go well or people push to hard too early in the rehab, then that’s a different story. Often they are a little stronger since they rehab so much.
What makes a big difference is if there is a meniscal tear to go along with the ACL tear. That’s when people are most likely to end up with osteoarthritis.
You're allowed to disagree..
I disagree with Dr’s all the time LOL
Cowboys fan since 1978.. I was 3 years old
i tend to fence with the patients attitude
I am by no means qualified in any means of the medical field; but i have and will always give the patient the benefit of the doubt if they are willing to give their best. I think the a patient’s overall positive mindset makes up for not so positive diagnosis.
by WestTxHornFan on Aug 23, 2009 2:08 AM CDT up reply actions
fact is you can go to as many Dr. as you want
1 will eventually give you the Diagnoses/Prognosis that you want.
it's not the one I want
it’s the one that’s fact as evidenced by many players who came back just as strong after ACL surgery.
BTW, I had the surgery as well and didn’t lose any speed as a result. Just saying.
In Romo we Trust
Torn ACL
Now a days they actually come back stronger; they add ligaments and clean up the bony spurs etc. The only question is if the player has the “want to” and the guts to work the rehab.
Could be worse.
Barbi can play outside in an emergency.

That's a shame
It looks like Octavien will now make the team unless they sign somebody after the season who was released during the final cuts.
In Romo we Trust
Yes, the waiver wire will be watched closely by all teams...
The cowboys will be no different.
Best of luck to him,
But this doesn’t really hurt the team. Much like the injury to Brewster, it’s actually better for the team, in my opinion, because they can keep him AND someone else, and he wasn’t going to be an impact player for the team anyway. I hope he spends the season training and studying, and he may actually come back as a better prospect than he was this year.

I was holding hope that he would have a good showing
Butler is a liability aginst the run, and or both of them were/ are going to get some playing time
An injury is never a good thing, but...
For some of these long term project guys, it might be better for the team in the long run. That’s 2 guys that were going to take a while to develop into valuable players that were going to either take up 2 spots on the 53 man roster or get exposed if they tried to move them to the practice squad. Based solely on this year, I don’t think it will be that hard to replace their production with another young player, and now the team can retain and evaluate 2 more projects. Wouldn’t it have been great if guys like Stanback that have contributed basically nothing to this team while they are learning the game had been on IR so the Cowboys could keep that QB a couple of years ago, or Walden last year?

Well it looks like Butler is Spencer's replacement at Back up olb / de
Octavian, I just can’t see him with his hand on the ground. Might keep eye on waiver wire here.
Imagine if Spence has troubles staying healthy again this season.
Ugh.

by TONYINCC on Aug 22, 2009 6:25 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
It sucks that he will miss the year, but an ACL is not so bad.
Plenty of guys make full recoveries from this.
I had it myself, and that was 11 years ago so I’m sure there have probably been some medical advances since then. You’re not the same the next year, but as far as his career, he’ll be back on track in no time.

Because I have. And in 18 months, I was back hitting all my old numbers. Brandon Williams will have a better surgeon and rehab team than I had, so he will be fine.

I didn't want to argue with anyone.
But I always heard that unless there are further complications that your ACL is generally stronger after. Is that true or just a rumor?

Thats an old wives's tale!
How do I know? I have an old wife and she told me.
I Think It Is True
The medical advances are amazing; my understanding is they can put a stronger piece in and drill holes to add additional ligaments or whatever; plus they can clean up the knee in all kinds of ways since they are in there; happening at the beginning of the year maximizes the rehab window before next year.
Yep.
I think him having an entire year to rehab it will help too. It isn’t like he’s getting this injury week 9.
