Random thoughts after rewatching Titans game.
I watch the game and read the post game thread. I saw some of the things people talked about but didnt see others. I rewatched the game with these things in mind and just randomly wrote down things that popped into my head. I saw Jenkins struggle a little with the 10 yard cushion and pass off his guy too early on the TD but I thought he played better than others thought. If Romo continues to play like this I might have to change my handle to Terry II.
I think the way our team has focused on our percieved weaknesses has given the impression we will be ball control team. We really need the ability to do both. With Romo, I think the big play ability is always there. I like the way we have gone about our business this TC . Someone ask what was better to score fast or slow. It depends on the situation. Sometimes your D needs a break or run out the clock and sometimes you need to makeup points in a hurry. The 90s Cowboys could do both. It looks like this years version can do both as well.
Relax on Austin. We just arent playing his game right now. Its by design as is(Im hoping) the 10 yard cushion by the CBs. It does you no good to play to your strengths in preseason. We were warned by Raf that the Titans matched up against our precieved weaknesses. To cash in on an opportunity to work on these "weaknesses" was to good to pass up and it will pay major dividends during the season. Without further dribble here goes......
Romos passes were a little high on the first few passes but dialed it in quickly. His accuracy looks closer to the 07 model than the 08. This is great because its one of the best attributes. Rewatch that pass to Witten on the sideline and you will appreciate it more with each reveiw.
Gosselin is an interesting guy. Didnt know much about him but I like what I see. Gets positive yards
Man, does Flo look fit. (for a 350lb man) He really looks to be in good shape. I dont remember him looking this slim last year.
The line looks good against a very solid Dline.
Witten seem to be in mid season form already.
Igor is even bigger than I thought. He sure looks good at the point of attack. Your not moving that dude when he anchors. I think he may be an upgrade and not a push.
Why are our corners playing 8-10 yards off of the WR. This is not Jenkins strength and something we were told we would see less of this year. I want the bump and run not zone man.
Brooking looks like an upgrade.
Barber looks quicker.
Felix reminds me of Westbrook. Boy was I ever wrong about him.
Watkins is a walking special teams penalty waiting to happen. I dont like to dump on young guys but this guy knows better than to run down the sidelines out of bounds. He is stupid. He needs to go if we plan on being a smarter team.
I finally gave up on Carp and now he starts looking like he belongs. Nice open field tackle on Young. He seems to be very active and in good position. Im actually impressed.
Free seem to be struggling a little more than last week..
McQ is seems to be playing better than last week.
I havent noticed Proctor at all. I dont know whether this is good or bad.
Ogletree looks promising though its a little early. He needs a few reps against better personel. I wouldnt count on him for anything this year but I could see having an impact in the future.
Is it diffulcult to field punts in the new stadium. Seems to be a lot of drops.
Might of spoke to soon on McQ. A big guy getting a running start on him on pass plays is giving him trouble. He is getting the job done but ..
I cant get a feel on McGee yet. I want him to do well but its too early for me to tell.
We wont go far if we dont get smarter about our penalties.
Im really starting to like Octavien. He is becoming my pet cat.
Wade seems different on the sideline but I cant put my finger on it.
Wade and Garrett both called a good game.

You mean the Jon and Kate Guy or Julius Crosslin? Neither are making the team this year.

Great post!
I share some of the same thoughts,
I noticed Flo looking slim too.
Igor is a big man in the chest but his hips are HUGE!, I think I credit Brookings play to him some. Notice how Brookings plays off Igors hip? It’s a thing of beauty.
Out of curiosity would you have anything to add to my post on Carpenter’s play by play? did you see it the same or a little different?
Free was dominating last week but I noticed that guy “Hall” whom he was blocking this week also played on the first team and gave Flo some problems. Hall was strictly in pass rush mode it looked like.
I saw Wade get into McGees ass on the side line. Did you see it? McGee had done something and he was angry.
I reread your Free post and agree 100% on the way the Ends were playing.
I didnt want to be called a homer and was going out of my way to be objective but I felt those ends getting a running start was a tough assignment. I f you set your anchor they had enough speed built up to run by you. If you didnt anchor down they had the force to drive you straight back. It was a tough assignment but they did a good job considering.
As always I really appreciate you taking the time to break down these guys. im biased, but it seems very fair. I dont watch these guys as close because I choose to read your break down and focus on other things. Im going to read Carps play now.

Very nice re-recap
Thanks for your thoughts and affirmation of Jenkins’ skill. Too many people are ready to jump on the guy for a mistake when he might be our best playmaker in the secondary by the end of the season.
Felix is just extraordinary. Here’s hoping that he stays healthy. I still remember BTB bloggers pouting that the Cowboys didn’t pick Mendenhall.
Watch Felix juke the third guy that tried to tackle him on that 40 yd checkdown before the end of the first half. He’s got some of Tomlinson’s shake-n-bake. And then watch his vision on the goalline carry — he stalled the LB in one move and then just accelerated past him through the hole.
Everything's looking up, Milhouse!

Mendenhall won't even end up being.....
….the best back out of that draft whose name ends in “ashard.”
Also...
Tashard most likely won’t ever get the chance to be the feature back in Dallas so the criteria to make a fair comparison won’t even be available for several years. But even if he turns out to be the real deal, there’s no reason for any of us to cry over spilled Mendenhall.
I agree regarding Austin
He’ll come up big when defenses start attacking us and get out of their cover 2 as he can beat most CBs in the league deep. We shouldn’t be worried about Austin’s impact this year for us.
BTW, I think Felix is a bigger, faster, stronger version of Dorsett, and that’s about as good of a compliment as any back can receive.
In Romo we Trust
Austin should be even more effective if we have the same success with short game.
Our ability to run and dink and dunk will surely pull in LBs and Ss closer to the line. It will also give Austin a chance to catch CBs leaning forward. I hope the timing is down because we could get up early and allow our pass rush to feast on an early buffet.

Austins ability to catch the short pass
will only help himself, if he is a one trick pony then he’s not nfl ready. Last year he showed us good things in the short game but not much this year. The coaches have said he’s open but Tony’s reads take him other places.
The one thing that I saw from him that I like was that skinny post he dropped, he looked like a bullet shot out of a gun! you bring a safety up and “bang” you will get shot by Austin.

I should add
The Philly killer was terry Glenn, his speed caused Philly all kinds of problems even with the all pro safeties. If your going to play pressure then you better get there as Bill used to say.

Austin is NFL ready
and there are a lot of one trick ponies in the league and thats okay if they’re really good at that one trick.
In Romo we Trust
I disagree and so did Bill
He said Austin could only do one thing and if he didn’t learn the other parts of being a receiver he wouldn’t stick. I think he’s done that, no worries here but the better he is at it the better a receiver he’s going to be.

one trick ponies
i doubt austin will have the success at the speed game that glenn or someone like berrian has had. i just hope he dont turn out to be a hester … all speed and no gloves

He has to do 2 things this year
stay healthy and catch the ball
stat line vs. tape
although austin hasn’t shown up on the stat line except for his one drop in the first game, do keep in mind that he had a short catch in the second game that was called back because of a penalty, and he was wide open for a big gain on a pass that kitna overthrew (because he ran into free’s helmet in the throw). plus there was the nice kick return that came back due to a (questionable) penalty. those are the things we can see on tape even if they don’t show up on the stat line. I think he’ll be fine.
Nice observations, squidlo,
I think Olshansky and Brookings are upgrades, too. I’ve been really happy with the way the front 7 (starters) have shut down the run in the preseason. Hope they keep it up.

Good observations Squidlo
I’ve had a really good feeling about the Brooking signing. A lot of people were writing him off, but I see an upgrade already.
Someone else (MCNorm I think) had mentioned that Carp was doing some new things to help him disengage from blockers. I wonder if Brooking has been working with him to improve that part of his game.
Drago is a mirror image of Spears, which is fine with me. I was a fan of Canty, partly because I was waiting for him to take the next step, but discounting that, we upgraded that spot too.
Felix’s run after a little delay or dump pass was a thing of beauty. I don’t care if it was against the TEN 1st stringers or 2nd, I don’t think it would have made any difference. He’s a big play threat in the open field.
Also the play where Romo made a little move to avoid the rush and then threw a beauty of a touch pass to Witten was great. Same as it ever was…
Training Camp '09 = Mega Thunder Dome....80 men enter, 53 men leave.
+1
I also read (but didnt watch for) that the coaches were very pleased with Romo moving to his left but pulling the ball to his chest. It seems running to the left in the past he carries the ball away from his body and many of his fumbles have resulted from this. It looks like he has worked on his flaws.
