Backup center Duke Preston headed to Dallas

Looks like the Cowboys might have found their backup center. The team is expected to bring in veteran Duke Preston, an experienced backup center who spent the last four years in Buffalo, where he started 20 games, including 11 last year.

Who's getting the boot? Proctor?

This makes me breathe easier.... time to say goodbye Proctor!!!

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

The Cowboys have 4 open roster spots

So this doesnt necessarily mean anyone is going.

by Impatient on Aug 26, 2009 3:11 PM CDT reply actions

it does for the 53

if they actually sign Preston, then they aren’t keeping both Proctor and Holland. Since Holland is the backup G and Proctor was the one who could swing to C, I bet Proctor is gone.

by scottmaui on Aug 26, 2009 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Just because they are signing him doesn't mean they keep him.

He could be cut just as easily as someone else. Just depends on how he fits. However, if he is able to play multiple positions you could see the Cowboys keeping a few as 8 offensive linemen with one or two on the practic squad.

by northtexan95 on Aug 26, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, he has to beat out

either proctor or holland, what I’m saying is they aren’t keeping all 3.

released by packers

sounds good, just wonder why the packers released him. but this post at Acme Packing Co. talks about it…

After RG Josh Sitton beat out C Scott Wells for the starting job on Monday, Bob McGinn speculated that the Green Bay Packers might trade Wells because they have C Duke Preston available as a backup. On Tuesday, they released Preston, so I guess that means Wells isn’t going anywhere.

So it sounds like it was that there was anything wrong with Preston, just that they have a solid backup in Wells, who was fighting for a starting job, so they don’t need Preston now.

by scottmaui on Aug 26, 2009 3:33 PM CDT reply actions

and then there's this

from the analysis of the Packers-Bills game last week

Buffalo’s O-line wasn’t good last season and they jettisoned three starters, including current Packer C Duke Preston, from that group. They’re rebuilding their line, and it’s just not ready.

Getting cut from the Bills for being part of a not good line isn’t great, but that doesn’t mean he still couldn’t be an upgrade in the backup position over Proctor.

by scottmaui on Aug 26, 2009 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

If he can remember the snap count and put it in the QBs hands then it's an up grade.

He’s also bigger than Proctor, but probably not as mobile from what I read.

by bad knees on Aug 26, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

not good but not proctor

sounds like they blamed just about everybody in buffalo for that. but then again they dont get into specifics other than he was 1 of 3 let go and couldnt beat out 2nd string in GB.

but yeah. not snapping the ball and flinging it over the QBs head is hard to even consider as a center.

Preston signed

DMN

The Cowboys have agreed to a one-year deal with center Duke Preston on Wednesday.

Preston, 6-5, 320 pounds, was cut by Green Bay on Tuesday after signing with the Packers in March. He started 11 of 15 games for Buffalo in 2008. He is expected to arrive in town tonight and take a physical Thursday.

He will compete with Cory Procter to be the backup behind Andre Gurode. Procter served as the primary backup at center and guard in 2008. On Wednesday coach Wade Phillips all but ruled out backup guard Montrae Holland playing center after Holland struggled with snaps during training camp.

"I know he can play guard," Phillips said. "We’ll keep working on that. If we feel strong about it, we’ll put him in a game [at center]."

by scottmaui on Aug 26, 2009 5:04 PM CDT reply actions

well, let's see if he makes the roster

profootballfocus.com has him ranked 53rd out of 55 centers in their Center Summary. Don’t ask me how they calculate their rankings, I have no clue. But it does not bode well. Then again, how much worse than our current backups can he be?

profootballfocus.com

also has Alan Ball and Pacman Jones as better cornerbacks than Terrance Newman, so anything they say= fail.

I call BS on that site

They have Gurode at #29 and Al Johnson at #23.

I wouldn't take too much stock in that list

they have Gurode ranked 29th which is ridiculous.

Here's a good breakdown from Buffalo Rumblings

Written before his release there.

Duke Preston

Not too good, but probably an All-Pro compared to Procter.

Duke NukeEm

They obviously want more experience at the backup C/G position. This guy provides enough to compete against the likes of Proctor. I also read somewhere that he has experience at tackle? Talk about versatile.

not sure

based on that review, not sure if he’s much better than proctor. but the boys must see something in him, maybe think he can be coached up and prefer an experienced inferior lineman to an inexperienced inferior lineman lol.

I'm still pretty glad Dallas signed him.

I feel better about O-line depth.

Maybe they are trying to get better chemistry together between the backups on the interior.

Procter sure didn’t have much chemistry with the rest of the 2nd-team last week.

it seems like one thing preston is good at

is the mental part of the game, line calls & communication.

the chemistry for that takes time to develop, but at least having a guy with significant snaps as a starter who is strong in this area is a good start.

by scottmaui on Aug 26, 2009 6:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Hard to take anything away from that review

not without seeing a comparison to another reputable player under the same rating system.

by sublimezg on Aug 26, 2009 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions

just glanced over the Jason Peters review

And what I’ve come away with is, I’m not sure I like this guys grading system. Also, compared to Peters, this guy is terrible…. lol

by sublimezg on Aug 26, 2009 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I went back to read that

Jason Peters link

He does actually conclude what the general opinion is: Peters good to great at run blocking, and overrated at pass blocking. Interesting.

Agree his ratings system is unique. I should have linked to another known player’s review as comparison.

I am not a huge fan of that rating scale. To judge a play good, decent, bad, or killed is a method that is tough to judge for objectivity and from my perspective, only looks at a one on one matchup rather than the whole line’s perspective. This isn’t to say that the guy doesn’t know what he is talking about, but even using his own scale, when he grades a guy with decent run blocking or better on 93% of the plays and decent pass blocking or better on 63.9% of the plays, I don’t know how he comes to the conclusion that he is a complete scrub. Maybe its just me, but it sounds like he is a good run blocker. And as for his pass blocking, it doesn’t sound good, but its better than the turnstile that is Cory Proctor. Ultimately, even with that guy’s review I am glad we have at least brought in another potential backup center that isn’t named Cory.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Aug 26, 2009 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

He made a mistake on his pass grading.

In the comments, he amends his pass grade to to a higher grade because he made a mistake in his calculations. Once you take that new score into account, the guy grades out to a pretty decent backup, which is what he will be here, on that scale.
